Oh, I would absolutely love more reviews of similar products, particularly those that can be used both in and out of campaigns. I know that this game comes with, I believe, 12 scenarios that match specific moments in the campaign. Does anyone know yet if there are instructions for creating new scenarios? That would certainly increase my interest in acquiring this game.
@@taccntb4345 I was still young when that released, but it has always been a bit clunky. Sometimes, it could even be immersion breaking, and using it required a great deal of prep from the DM. That's why I created my own system. From what I have seen so far, this seems more streamlined, and more versatile. If it is also customizable, with a system for designing scenarios, it has the potential to be a better option. If not, I probably won't spend money for it.
I was able to buy this game new for 10 bucks and I was coming to UA-cam to try and see if there was a play through and your review really some things up and gave a great perspective. My 12 year old son really seems to be into dungeons & dragons, but rarely do we have the time to sit down and actually play together so I feel like this is a good way to step his toes in and teach him how to play certain elements
Our Dragonlance campaign group just played our first battle in the board game and it was sooo much fun! We still role played our characters and there were key moments of the board game that were very cinematic moments for our rpg game. I’m sure it’s not for everyone but, wow, did we have fun playing it during our session night.
I am seeing a lot of comments about the cost. Shop around. You can find this for a good price on many online stores. I picked up a Deluxe Preorder for $123 AUD which converts to $85 USD. This was from my usual online store who I order my 40K and stuff through, so you do not even have to look too hard. For those in Australia - The Combat Company $123.95 + $10 postage or FREE post over $150. Gap Games $159.95 +$10 postage. Both are reliable and solid after-sales service. @@jamesalexhowlett you definitely need to read the first trilogy, which is amazing. Then after that the legends trilogy which isn't as good but still good. Everything else is ok.
A number of the original Dragonlance modules were the same. You could play as individual PCs or, in addition, play through a series of wargame scenarios using the old D&D Battlesystem with some of the PCs in command. Seems like they are trying to recreate that with this game. I wonder if they intend to release some supplements for this to cover big Dragonlance battles like the High Clerist Tower or the underwater battle in Istar. Perhaps even the big, final battle at Neraka.

I love a good board game. Based on what is presented here, Warriors of the Krynn strikes me as a D&D themed novelty item trying to be a board game rather than being a well-made dedicated board game. If anyone wants to try a really well-made D&D-style board game, try Gloomhaven if you haven't already played it. It's huge, it's challenging, it's complex, yes it's it's expensive and takes a long time to play, but it's also a unique and wild experience. The big thing about this one: it's meant to integrate into your game. Although I've only seen LoW being played, I've played some of the dungeon crawlers of theirs, which are frankly pointless.
@@HowtobeaGreatGM Yeah, if I want a dungeon crawler, I'll play Descent or Gloomhaven, maybe some HeroQuest, probably not a DnD dungeon crawler board game

I personally love the idea of using different systems to simulate different large aspects like "Large Field or Siege Battles" or "Large to singular ship Battles" myself, or at least the idea of building ontop of a foundation game like dnd could be with more and more games ontop of it. The idea of the "Mega Game" is becoming a thing for me.

So I wonder if it would revive Dungeon Command? Part of me imagine a unit set for Harper but including Drows (mostly themed on Eilistraee since Harper are their Allies and provide “tank” unit via Darksong Paladins). Even if it’s skirmish level.
Just picked this up from Ollie’s on sale.. I love DnD but don’t often get to assemble a party.. but my niece and her boyfriend and my nephew are interested in learning, and I’ve never DMed before so I’m hoping this is a good introduction into DnD for them! (Especially my nephew as he’s only 10). Will continue watching the video but glad I found your channel!
I think that is a hugely valid question. I was speaking to a 'collector' of D&D stuff and they're going to get it, although did smart at the price. Personally, I wouldn't get it, as I'm not a collector, and am too much of a rules-creator as a DM. I'd value the boardgame at maybe $50 - $60, the book at $40-50, and the DMs screen at $20. Does that hold up? Well yes because you get the D&D Beyond inclusion which is another $30+. Having said that, unless you really plan on running a lot of Dragonlance is it worth it?
If you look around the various online shops, I am sure you will get it cheaper than $150 (I assume USD). I got a Deluxe preorder including the Warriors of Krynn, Shadow of the Dragon Queen and DM screen for $123 AUD which is about $85 USD. Just do some shopping around and you will get a good deal.
So funny to see this randomly right now. With all the BS Hasbro has been up to recently. Just last week or so Krynn has been bought up for the Ollie's discount stores. (Which means I need to go get one....or two depending on the price.) I really just want the minis
I bought this at Ollie's a few weeks ago. It cost $9.99. Be really careful pulling the minis out of the box. Mine were stuck in quite tightly, and I was afraid they'd break. Fortunately they did not. The pieces and tokens are nicely done, but the game seems overly complex to me. I'm going to hopefully play it tomorrow night with my friends. I hope we can get through it okay. My Ollie's also had some game tokens for $3.00 each I picked up. "Campaign Cases" for terrain and creatures. They might come in useful if you play with pen and paper.
This is great news. My experience when it comes to board games is first impression goes a very very long ways. Learning all the little rules one might miss the first time comes later.
Thank Goodness! I was really worried after straight up being told by multiple UA-camrs to NOT BUY SpellJammer. I'll wait for the boardgame night at the local store to see this played before I buy this. I'm not a big dragon lance fant. I even read the books when they came out but they didn't strike me as so special.
War Machine rules, Rules Cyclopedia (also a boxed set). Great mass combat rules, but not well-remembered. OD&D had Swords&Spells, which was the son of Chainmail. Also a very good game.
Are we going to see another DnD board game compatible with the other 6 adventurr board games? I searched a lot on google but I haven't found anything..
Will wait and see, but so far it didn't get me excited (and this has nothing to do with your review, Guy, just o be clear on that). Dragonlance is very near and dear to my heart (I'm considering running it in some other system) and so far this doesn't really seem like the Dragonlance I know.
OK. It's the end of 2023. It's been a year since this boardgame was released. Did you play the boardgame more than twice? I never found anyone playing this game. Not even on UA-cam. Even in actual plays, I never found one where they cut to the boardgame instead of bypassing it and moving forward in the plotline.
SHop around. You can find it at a reasonable price fairly easily. My usual online store has it for $123 AUD ($85 USD) which for book and game I consider more than reasonable.
Thanks for the review, but not looking into the character porting system was... unwise. Would have liked to see more of the game than just stock shots of its contents. Good delivery however :)
I mean the only difference between a board game and a role playing game are the distance between dice rolls. You can turn any board game into an RPG just by . You know. Roleplaying in it.
Yes and no. I only roleplay boardgames when I play, I can't help it. But there is still a very different mindset - you are much more constrained in what you can and cannot do in a boardgame right? You can't wander off the board for example.
@@HowtobeaGreatGM right and there's always what you can and can't do in RPGs as well. Anything outside of that is basically playing pretend. One could simply lay out the mass combat subsystem as a board game and strictly interact with it as such. But I feel as a dm you could make sure to encourage the players to keep the tone of imagination and colouring in the empty spaces the game doesn't talk about. Id liken it to taking the attack action. As a player I could just say I attack and roll a d20. Much like in a board game. But we add flavor and spice with narration and suddenly the mechanics come to life. I'm not sure how hard it is with this game but I know I can do that with most games. Even checkers if you give me enough time ;) Anywho. That's about my whole point :)
Sounds like a decent game. What holds me back is the quality and look of the components. I think so much more could have been done. I don't like the little rectangular army blocks, the cardboard is flimsy, the miniatures very poorly painted (washed) and the whole game looks cheap, when compared to other boardgames in the same price range. Disappointing, could have been great...
Love rollplay and boardgame, but dont see the space for this. When it comes to boardgame gloomhaven does it better (beside the price) and when roleplaying our battles are carried out with better figures and real terrain made by 3D printing and/or XPS foam.
Are you saying that they can't make a good thing every once in a while? Especially when they have access to the minds of the Hasbro boardgames department?
I was worried there might be... but as it was all done in the name of improving the game I can happily say I've become good friends with those I met :) In fact they encouraged me to maintain my voice and views as without critical feedback there can be no improvement.
I watched a review and walkthrough of the rules for this game and the book. It isnt needed and tbh it looks like it would break immersion quickly. It isnt neccessary to the game at all and to be honest it doesnt look like it's worth the extra 100 bucks you'll spend for the deluxe edition. I'll pass and just grab the book.
Extra $100? I got my Deluxe preorder for $123 Australian, which is $85 USD. So I do not know where you are getting $100 extra when I did not even pay $100 for book and board game and bonus DM screen.
I buy board games for the minis :( so not enough for me to buy it. I love board games but my husband doesn't :( So unless they stuff a bunch of minis in there I would feel guilty buying it
I'm a HUGE fan of D&D, but I have to admit, if they offered a playtest of ANY of their recent products, I'd decline. I don't want to anywhere close to anything those woke "sensitivity writers" have even been in proximity of. They went from AAA, to ultra garbage. I guess that why I've seen a zillion of their board game at Ollies.
I'll keep it on my radar... but I've very skeptical. I don't see how it's "a great boardgame"; it seems so simple and generic, pale and bland copy of other boardgames...
I don't think I ever state that my view is impartial. I think I went into the boardgame with as open a mind as possible whilst still having thoughts that most D&D players would have: will this work in my game?
are you kidding me - quality components??? wiz kids is infamous for crap components - didnt yous ee the "art" on the characters - did you not notice how utterly cheap and unprofessional they look???
All this is doing is codifying larger scale battle with a different set of rules. Uh... Like ship to ship battles. I argued in your 'spelljammer is crap 👎' video (not the best first impression of your channel imo) that you missed the point of that products intent (I don't think that was written for you and your tastes either (you seem to need more crunch and/or vermicilitude.) You needed more content from an into scenario book+nostalgia monster book+intro adventure..., I.e., you wanted less of an intro intro. This was all n to a starter box imo. Which just based on the advertised page counts alone screamed "light weight intro" and I adjusted my perceptions immediately, sono got to enjoy the content sans but hurt. I also paid starter box prices for my copies.) But I really digressed there, what I said what I thought you wanted was a change of scale from the focus of d&d out of the box. Spelljammer needs a boardgame approach to ship battles to give you what you want. A change in scale benefits like that being done differently (at times) and not forced (e.g., opposed to slapping on additional actions to simulate and farce of an action economy... But strive for a quantum rules shift to make this larger scale interactions more entertaining and engaging.) It will be interesting to see how FORCED using your player as a player/general is in the dragonlance boardgame. This tickles my fancy though. Harkens back to the old DL 11 module that was more of a wargame than a RPG and really put you into that space.

Are you saying that they can't make a good thing every once in a while? Especially when they have access to the minds of the Hasbro boardgames department?
@@KingZNIN Yes.
@@ckmishn3664 aww ok that's the type of person you are.
Was there any bad blood after the spelljammer video? This was one of the harshest thumbnails/reviews
I was worried there might be... but as it was all done in the name of improving the game I can happily say I've become good friends with those I met :) In fact they encouraged me to maintain my voice and views as without critical feedback there can be no improvement.
@@HowtobeaGreatGM that is wonderful to hear!! Appreciate the response, some time I’ll have to make it out to that castle
More like Warriors of Cringe.
I haven't even watched the review yet, I got nothing.
Yeah no, I'll never play this, thank you :)
✌
I buy board games for the minis :( so not enough for me to buy it. I love board games but my husband doesn't :( So unless they stuff a bunch of minis in there I would feel guilty buying it
Never heard of it
A good video, but God that board game is ugly as sin
I'm a HUGE fan of D&D, but I have to admit, if they offered a playtest of ANY of their recent products, I'd decline. I don't want to anywhere close to anything those woke "sensitivity writers" have even been in proximity of.
They went from AAA, to ultra garbage. I guess that why I've seen a zillion of their board game at Ollies.

I'm honestly curious how you would pronounce the word, "costle" differently from the word, "castle".
Alas my accent betrays me.
I'll keep it on my radar... but I've very skeptical. I don't see how it's "a great boardgame"; it seems so simple and generic, pale and bland copy of other boardgames...
Great minds, at WOTC? Sorry. U lost me there.
Its hard to put a lot of value into your review, when you admittedly start it so closed minded about the product.
