Bearded Dragon Brumation! Why is My Bearded Dragon Sleeping a Lot and Not Eating?

- How do I know if my bearded dragon is going into brumation? Today I answer this in a simple guide on what to do if they do. A simple trick is if its getting to be winter and your bearded dragon starts sleeping during the day and eating less they are most likely going through brumation. all you have to do is stop feeding and wait till spring or normal activity reoccurs. you can turn off lights after 6- 8 hours of being on.

Finally! Someone who explains this clearly! I was so confused on what the heck this was. Nothing online was explaining it clearly.
Happy to help!
I was really worried that my beardie hasn't had a last poop before going into brumation. Considered getting her out for a tummy rub when she opened her eyes as that's what I've been reading up about, hence my continued research and coming across your video. My gut was telling me to leave her be and not turn off the lights, so this video has put my mind at ease. Thanks
Happy to help! Yes that’s a reason why it’s good to leave those lights on during brumation. If they need it they will use it.
Yup. My beardie Ryker has been doing this. For the past few weeks. Though he woke up real quick for dubias that I was feeding my box turtles 1 day. lol.
Haha yup food will always get there attention
I just inherited a Beardy and she has not eaten anything since I got her. She’s been super sleepy and not really active. Today she refused to get out of the cool side of the tank. Thank you for explaining everything!
Happy to help!
thank you so much for making these videos! they have really helped me learn & hopefully i’ll be able to get a beardie soon :)
Happy to help!
Thank you for the very helpful content! Great info, pace, instructions! Well done! I appreciate you!
Happy to help! Thank you
Thank you so much I was worried about it, now I have the answers I’m learning a lot from you
Glad to help
If only I saw this the day you put it out. I gave my dragon a bath yesterday because I was concerned that she was dehydrated. This time of year always stresses me out. I will leave her alone now. I did also take advantage and give her a little nail trim since she came to me with over grown nails and two years in we are still working on it.
No worries yes brumation can be scary but very natural.
Thanks for the info! Much needed 🙏
Happy to help!
Thanks for addressing the babies. My uro was born in March, and was eating daily before it started brumating. Great weight off my mind.
Yeah very normal stuff. A lot of mine are sleeping now and don’t come out already.
I love your vids
Thank you!
You said they dont start brumation in summer, but usually in fall. Ours started in mid-september, but were in Louisiana, so it's still hot here. Idk if we should be worried or not. This is our first year with him, so this is all new to us. He just wants to lay under his rock or on his hammock and not bask much, and he hasnt pooped or eaten much in a few weeks.
Oh, I did not know that they brumate. Good to know, thank you! 😊
Happy to help!
can they sleep in a room that has some noise going on? during the day?
Oh yeah that’ll be fine
My bearded dragon has been doing this for a year straight, in summer and when it is super hot. She poops every 2 weeks, I have tryed everything for her to poop more but it hasn’t worked. She doesn’t eat her vegetables, she only eats anything that moves. I don’t want you to get worried about you thinking that I treat her bad. She has a 110 gallon tank, she gets fed every other day, so I don’t know why she is doing this.😢
No worries try being up ambient temps in the cage and see if that helps
My bearded dragon has not been eating so I assumed it was brumation but he is super skinny. I can lay him on his back and see his empty stomach his tail still has some meat but he does not move at all or anything is this normal for brumation
No that is not normal if he is super skinny schedule a vet appointment as soon as you can could be something else. They don’t get skinny during brumation
Its March and my beardie just started brumation (i think). Its only been a couple days. Is this normal? Its still cold out. Shes seems healthy and eating. Idk I may still take her to the vet. Shes only 9 months old.
Do tropical reptiles do this to? I think I've herd of it with chameleons, do you have any expeareance with this?
Great info ! Would this be similar to with rankins dragons as well ? Also what is a good night temp range ? I know it’s suppose to get colder but just want to make sure I don’t need night heat. Thanks again !
My beardie is losing too much weight during brumation and shedding some. What should I do?
Hi
I have a 3 month old everything was normal, good husbandry and have a Sand and soil substrate. My little dragon started to search around the tank one day till they found somewhere to dig and has been under the substrate for 2 weeks now.
Is this good or Bad ?
I love your content 😊
It could just be in beumation now if he is losing weight then it’s something to worry about but they will dig brumation burrows sometimes
My dragon has cancer should I let him brumation ?
Is it normal for my bearded dragon to sleep 3 days straight?
I just got my beardie a few days ago for my birthday and I have not seen him eat, unless he just does it while I’m at school, and he is always sleeping. He’s just about 5-6 weeks old. Is this normal, or should I be worried?
Depends if he starts losing weight then yes. But if he stays the same then he’s ok. Also when you first get them it does take a week or two for them to calm down and start eating normally
Is your beardie still doing this? I just got my as well and i just see him sleeping all day on his branch
Do they sometime do this during summer time?
My question too.
HELP!!! my bearded dragon is staying on cool side right now and sleeping in his house I don’t notice that he has lost weight but I am wondering if it’s to soon my bearded dragon is already starting to brumate?
Perfect timing. Mine just recently stopped eating and lost interest in bugs/worms.
I was also wondering if it’s safe to still handle him when he comes out of his hide or do i just leave him in the tank during the whole brumation period?
You can handle him but try to not do it as much let him get that beauty sleep 😂
Thank you! I was starting to get worried as to why he was getting mad I kept trying to feed him lol oops
Haha happy to help
Does burmation like this goes for babies too ? My daughters beardy has been eating no more than 2 crickets a day . I just ordered some roaches to se if he eats better . It did loose weight for what I can see
Sometimes but losing weight is when you kind of have to worry. When they brumate they don’t really lose weight. So keep trying to put fat on his bones. Try some mealworms and super worms.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse im happy to say he is good and healthy now . now i’m going to PR and wonder if i can leave it hibernate while i come back . we adopter him in september and it was not bigger than 3 inches maybe less but don’t know the birth date or how old is it
Help! When your beardie brumates is it completely motionless? My son has had one for 6 months and it was alert this morning. By the time he got home, its eyes were closed and it hasn’t moved. Haven’t seen it breathe either. I fear the worst but came across a lot of vids about brumation. Help!
This is so besides the video lol ! But what tribe are you from if you didn’t mind me asking ? I am from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. ! Chi Pisa Lachike!
Haha no worries. I’m from the Seminole nation of Oklahoma.
Why is my bearded dragon hanging out in the colder side of the enclosure and halfway in his water bowl and halfway out. We just got him last saturday and want to make aure he is okay and that we are properly caring for him. His names smaug and we love him so so much! He's in a 120g enclosure
It could be too hot on the hot side. Are the basking spot temps 105-115f and air temps 80s-90s?
Hi I have a question my breaded dragon started sleeping more then usual is only May he went to bed at 4pm yesterday and hasn’t woken up is this normal he is only 9 months
hey man. I got a question. idk if my beardie are in brumation or not but but now he’s just laying down all day either in the cooler side or in his basking rock. sometimes he moves a little. is this a sign of brumation? he’s like this after I’ve fed him a mealworms for his snacks. please help…😢
I've got a female dragon she is sleeping a lot more now she about 9 months shes not loosing weight shes still eating every now and again do you think it will be brumation
So wat if i just bought a red baby, bout a month old, he healthy in weight,to me he pretty big compared to all the others his age (he was bullying the others they had to separate him) i got him yesterday 6/22/2024 and i think they was starving him at petsmart , i brought him home he ate 7 crickets!! Went to sleep like a new born and never moved until i got him out in the am.. but by 9am he was sleeping standing, then i put him on my chest and hes steady sleeping but he is super active and runs around.. maby its just a bonding/finally feeling safe thing?? I felt he was mishandled alot before i bout him he wasnt even on the petsmart floor they had him in the back cuz they said he was aggressive.. i had his bond money and paid to get him out of there💪🏾🤣.. i feel like he was hungry and they was not feeding him as much as he needed .. its 11am and he bak sleep on my chest.. this is ok right??? I do have a 4yr old bearded but its my girls and i inly been around that one for bout a yr and that one really loves me and i took her out bak one day and she was eating alot of the 3 leaf clovers!..
I've had my beardie for about 2 years now. I got her as a hatchling. I have done a little research on brumation before my beardie went into brumation recently and the only thing i've been concerned about is her sleep. Just to be safe, i have looked up illnesses and she seems fine. No weight loss at least. But she does sleep ALL day and it's been about 2 weeks or longer since she's stayed asleep. I'll keep her lamp on and make sure she's breathing. Sometimes she'll even open her eyes to look at me and then goes back to sleep. Im not sure if it's normal she stays mostly permanently asleep. Some websites i've read from have said this is a bad sign if she stays asleep and could be a sign of illness and to make sure to feed her if she wakes up or even give her a bath to hydrate her. I havent done that yet since she doesnt seem interested in food or water and i dont want to force her. My question is, is it normal for her to stay mostly permanently asleep throughout the brumation process? And is it okay to feed her once in a while (or leave her alone)?
My female does this and it’s ok that they sleep a lot during this process all that matters is weight loss if she starts losing a ton of weight then that’s when it’s a illness but if she’s staying the same size she’ll be fine. My girl sleeps almost the entire time of brumation and will lose no weight comes out of brumation ready to eat everything 😂
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse nice! Thank you sm!! ✨
It’s only September and it’s not cold it’s just raining a lot I’m worried because I just got him 3 days ago 😢
Babies don’t brumate they will after the first year but if they are sleeping as a babies like this they actually could be sick of temps could be too cold
So they do this no matter what the temp in your house is, or where you live?
If the temp in your house is superrrr cold they might do this but that’s why you always want to maintain warmer temps during summer if temps drop in winter doesn’t matter too much as they will be brumating. They will do this no matter where you are at in the world. Once winter is coming they know and will brumate
I thought my bearded dragon was sick I let him out today after Letting him do what he wants. And he shit on my floor but good info tho
Haha they love doing that. Happy to share info
My dragon is in brumation right now... What should the temp be in his tank?
I try and keep it at regular temps but if it’s a little cooler that’s ok. I just try and keep the basking spot at 105f -110f
He just started this today and is not eating even though we are in April. Should I leave him alone for a few days?
Can you see if yours is breathing??
Thank you so much for the explanation, I've been freaking out for days because he's been so stressed and he hasn't been awake to eat.
Still definitely stressed about not feeding him. If he is awake and trying to bask, do we try to feed him during that time that he's awake?
You can it’s entirely up to you.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse I want to play it safe I'm way too scared of starving my baby. Thanks for the reply btw
@@Shinyloog20992 no worries happy to help totally fine to play it safe
My bearded dragon is a baby he ain’t eating I just got it 2 days ago he pooped yesterday
Babies don’t brumate the first year he is probably just getting used to his new home.
See u reply back to some, but my beared dragon would be sleeping (i think) then he would get up and move for like 5 seconds with his eyes closed then he would go back to being still and sleeping. Do you know a reason for this?
Make sure temps are correct. Heat is good uvb is good. Also a vet visit is always recommended as I can’t see your dragon if his eyes closed he may have an eye infection. Many things can cause that
my new juvenile beardie barely eats. i put him in his feeding bin and he will eat only like 4 bugs and then just stare at me like he’s over it… is it because he’s new or because it’s december? he also mainly stays in his basking spot and all of the temperatures are correct
Mine is not eating and just sleeping a lot and it’s the middle of March. Is this normal to or no?
Not too normal but as long as they are not losing weight then it should be fine but if they don’t wake up soon try boosting air temps all over the tank above 78f
I got my 6 month old beardie two days ago, he eats but not that much. At first almost all day she was basking, but towards the end of the day she went in her hide and hasnt came out since. So know after this video i assume shes brumating now
so my bearded dragon has been sleeping more but he still wants to eat should i still not give him food?
If he is basking still yeah you can
What if your dragon started brumation in September
That’s pretty early but it is getting fall so if they do start acting little like it could be but just double check temps sometimes if it’s too hot they act that way as well
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse thanks.
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse she was burrowed in her substrate for like 2 days. But she’s out now. Was she hungry?
I seriously need help! I have a free range Beardie.. I still have her original enclosure but she’s a big gal to be a year old and I need to know if I should stick with our routine or put her back into her original enclosure and just make it comfy 😢 it’s my first winter with her and I appreciate any and all information thanks ❤
It depends if she starts brumation on her own then I would put her in the enclosure and follow this process
i got my bearded dragon around a month ago and i’m pretty sure he’s brumating right now and i’ve been so worried that he’s ill. Thank you so much, question : the shop i got him from asked to have him back for a few days to keep an eye on him as i was concerned but they said that he was eating when he was there. He hasn’t eaten nor basked with me so idk if that’s brumation. The hide he is meant to bask on i don’t think he can get on so i have ordered him a new one. Does it sounds strange to you that he eats in the pet shop but not with me? he was there for a year and a half so maybe he’s used to it? sorry for the long messages lol and thanks for the video. :)
No worries. He voudl just be stressed with the move sometimes the move from pet shop to home is stressful and they don’t eat but as long as he doesn’t loose a ton of weight you will be fine. I will say this time of year they do go into brumation
i have noticed my bd is sleeper bout a hr early bout her 1 leg is starting 2 shed as of 2 days ago ?
Yup she could be starting brumation. Mine have been getting the same way. About that time
What if they’re still young? We got our bearded dragon in September took excellent care of her and she was eating great. As soon as mid October came around she’s done nothing but sleep and refuses to eat. We took her to the vet they said they didn’t see anything wrong. We figured since she was a baby with being well under a year that she should still be eating so we’ve been kinda force feeding her with a syringe and now I’m worried that we messed up by doing that.
They shouldn’t brumate there first year however a lot of times once they get past the baby stage which is longer than 12 inches they sometimes will brumate. The biggest thing is weight loss. If they are losing weight and it’s noticeable something is wrong and you probably need a vet visit.
This is our first bearded dragon and we have had her for 6 months so she's not yet a year old. She still wants to eat that hasn't slowed down at all but she is sleeping a lot during the day which is something she never did before. We have been treating her for parasites and in 2 weeks she gets checked again to see if this medicine has worked. Since we know she has a problem we are afraid to let her fully go into brumation if that is truly why she's sleeping more. She looks good and healthy eating and pooping. But she's hiding a lot and sleeping a lot more. What's your take on this?
Since you are treating her for parasites I think that’s why she is sleeping through the day. Parasite medicine is pretty rough on there but and will make them more tired. After she’s done with treatment give her a few weeks to recover but it’s almost spring so if she is continuing this behavior I would definitely think something else is causing it
@ChiefSweetsUniverse thank you for your insight. We've watched a lot of your videos since we got her you are very helpful!
@@jennieh9300 happy to help
Hey man, I got a baby beardie his very young and his doing this i dont know what to do he only eats one or 2 bugs a day. Im super worried. His about 5 months old i think thats just very young to burmation
If he is very young that’s fine they don’t eat a lot when very young.
Is it ok to keep the light cycle on for 12 hours a day and try to keep them from brumating if you don’t want them to or is that unhealthy? I have a friend and she thinks something wrong with her dragon and I think it’s brumating for the first time but also lacking uvb. I am trying to help her and referring her to your vids. Her dragon is like 18 months I think first adult fall/winter. Thanks.
Oh yeah if he’s that age he’s probably brumating. Also you can they will still brumate. It’s like they feel it’s winter
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse thank you.
