    I’ve always admired the sport trac. It was undoubtedly the most reliable vehicle ford produced at the time and it was no wonder it was used by the government. Ik plenty of people who have above 300k miles with very little maintenance needed on these compared to the F-150 which most didn’t last 150k miles before having major problems during that decade

      They definitely are super solid vehicles, especially with that 4.0 under the hood!

      Wait they were used by the government? Police?

    • @matthewaldrich6455

      @@mattcramer3280 yes. FBI had contracts built with ford to use the sport trac for many different special operations. They’re still used by some state fbi agencies to this day. Some were outfitted with high grade armor and special police equipment. They were used by a lot FBI agencies til ford stopped production. Would be nice if they brought it back. Kill the f150 and bring back the sport trac. If it wasn’t for the recession the sport trac would’ve killed the f150 in sales and brought back the midsize truck segment. Probably would’ve ended the full size truck segment amongst all manufacturers. Ford wouldn’t have needed to revive the ranger to keep up with midsize truck sales like the colorado and Tacoma.

      @@matthewaldrich6455 thanks so much for the info! Only thing I heard why they retired the sport trac was the fuel economy

      Matthew Aldrich I don’t think Sport Tracs are any more reliable than an F150 from the same era, coming from someone who works on them every day. The 4.6 3v / 6R80 is literally the same engine/trans that the f150 was equipped with. No differences. The 4.0 engines are awesome, but extremely headache prone with 180k+ miles (ish). Timing chains and cassettes will need changing which means the entire engine must come out. Ford used an idiotic rear timing chain on the passenger side.
      F150 is much more stout and can take much more abuse- solid rear axle vs sport trac’s IRS for example.
      4.6 is definitely the way to go on the 2nd Gen sport tracs. Not knocking them at all! But they’re not more reliable than an F150. They’re basically the same (or worse if it’s the 4.0, in my shops experiences!)

    I feel like the Sport Trac is better looking than the F150, Its a disappointment that they cancelled it. But on the bright side they brought back the Ranger, which seems to be somewhat similar to the Sport Trac in size.

      I agree, the new ranger fills the same market that the sport trac left open.

    I have a 2010 and loved it. The storage compartments in the bed are water resistant, not waterproof. Do not put anything in there, like electronics, that cannot get wet. The hard tonneau cover is standard equipment. 4.0L engine and 6R80 transmission are super reliable.

    I've had my '07 Sport Trac since 2009 (bought used). Problems you may expect: I've changed my radiator twice. And it's next to impossible to do! From what I understand, Ford designed the system with high coolant pressure, of which the plastic radiator can't handle. Also, the transmission has shift issues (trans control module) that crop up due to a poor design. There are other cosmetic quality deficiencies that are bothersome. (for instance, you can see the cheaply applied tailgate trim missing on this one)
    You may think the door handle is ergonomically designed, but I see it as a major design flaw. For one, unfamiliar passengers can't figure out how to get out, but worst of all, open the door on a windy day and try to grab hold of it before it slams into the car in the next parking space. Impossible!
    It also doesn't have a USB or MP3 port for modern devices. Unacceptable for 2007.
    But all in all, it rides great and is the last of a breed built on a truck frame. Something that is hard to find any more in a SUV.
    I'll keep mine, because a few thousand for upkeep and maintenance is cheaper than $40,000 to replace it.

      You'll notice this government one has a second door pull below the armrest. My 2008 doesn't have that, but I wish it did. The stock door pull is too far back and, like you said, the door handle is useless for closing the door.

    The 4.0l sohc is moderately dependable, but when the timing chain guides give out, the whole engine has to come out, because the passenger side timing chain is at the back of the engine, and the transmission bellhousing blocks access to it.

    • @Cahlager
      @Cahlager  4 роки тому

      Oh yes I'm aware. It is unfortunate, but as long as the rest of the vehicle is in good enough condition to warrant the repair costs, it is well worth it to me to continue to have that nice balance of power and dependability you get with these motors.

      So for the 2nd gen sport trac (07-10) they fixed this issue, you only really see it on the 1st gen (01-05). It's a pretty bulletproof engine as long as you change the oil regularly

    • @tomsriv
      @tomsriv 3 роки тому

      @@matthewsalcedo593 Don't have personal experience, but on paper the HP and fuel economy are worst of both worlds. If possible it would be cool to swap in the modern ecoboost 4cyl out of the new ranger.
