    Dear Finnish friends, how wonderful it is to follow your channel. Finally a couple who dares to say how life is in a Van, the good and lesser moments, winter and summer, and also the adjustments to improve comfort in a motorhome purchased from the factory. You never see that, usually you have built it yourself at home and you can never make a comparison with, for example, this bought and finished Adria.
    I have been giving a lot of money to other fluids but the only good working is indeed the BLUE AquaKem.
    My conclusion after many years of experience and testing a lot of brands, sometimes only available outside my country.
    - The best solution for Thetford toilets without odors and fast breakdown of faeces is: Install allways the SOG for the odors and use the BLUE AquaKem for dissolving rapidly the faeces.
    - Many will now say, the Blue Kem is not septic tank friendly, and that's true. But any other friendly solution of liquid (Green,...) makes your toilet 'stinks' or smells for days and weeks.
    - Composting toilets are excellent but they are made for men and not woman friendly, who have a real problem with there period every month, so it's a no go as a couple.
    Very informative video for newbies and so true.

    I may have solution for the pee splash thing: There are these larger size (19mm) Gardena so called STOP hose couplers/fittings which have a valve in them. The valve close when you seperate the two coupler halves automatically. You can attach the cut of piece (hopefully you kept it somewhere) of the supplied hose to the tank and the valved part of the coupler and install the other half of the coupler to the remaining hose going to the fan. The valve is water tight and as such you can shake the tank all you want without fear of being stink splashed upon...

    Been using Lidl Formil bio washing liquid for the last couple of years, it's ok for septic tanks, not as good as the thetford stuff but very cheap, would be interesting to see how it works when combined with the sog. Great channel, thankyou.

    I am looking to buy a similar campervan, but I want to have a composting toilet installed in place of the cassette toilet. In the cassette compartment, i will add a water heater for my recirculating shower. Or, if the water heater already has a space in the van, perhaps the cassette space is large enough for the shower‘s water tank. Thoughts? 🇫🇮🚚

    I use a porta potty (a mobile version of the Thetford brand toilets) I use it only for the number one procedures. Number two I try to do in toilets which I visit at gas stations and restaurants. If I need to go number two and a regular toilet isn't around I us the bowl of the porta potty to place a plastic baggy in filled with some sawdust. I do business in the baggy an thigh a knot in it to close it. I store the bag(s) in a small bucket with a lid hanging from the chassis of the van and when I find it I throw the bag(s) away in a dumpster or larger container. I do this very few times since I plan my shit rather well... pardon my french... but emergencies do occur as we all know...
    Back to the pee story:
    The porta potty system uses an upper and a lower tank and a hand pump to transfer clean water from the upper tank through the bowl and drains into the lower tank for storage. Mine is about 15 L and lasts me a week only using it for number 1.
    I use plain water in the upper tank with a little bit of a liquid sold in aquarium places called aquarium filter starter, which is a mixture of harmless but very helpful bacteria which break down ammonia (the chemical in pee which causes the nasty smell) I use a very small 3 watt air bubbler (from a even smaller aquarium which runs only for 20 minutes after the toilet has been used and also switches on when I start my van's engine) The bubbler aerates the waste water in the lower tank to help the bacteria break down the ammonia added to the waste water during peeing. The bacteria need ammonia to eat and oxygen to breath. The ammonia smell has no time to develop inside the waste tank because the bacteria are very fast in doing there job. The ammonia is converted into nitrite and eventually into nitrate which are both odorless. Nitrates are harmless to flush into nature since it is a naturally occurring fertilizer. So basically I can (and at times I do) empty the lower tank in the forest (obviously away from any nearby streams or wells. Basically I am watering and fertilizing plants in the vicinity...
    For those skeptical: look up on google: Nitrification Cycle and Nitrifying Bacteria... Both are common names in the aquarium/fishtank world, are present in nature and both are very well documented as being a safe, clean and environmentally responsible way to deal with ammonia laden water...

    :-) "emptying it somewhere else"...have a nice weekend :-), it's a good idea, but i couldn't do my own, was already happy that my water pumps worked again after the first owner made a total mess in electrical system...you are technician, totally different thing if YOU do it yourself...so I probably stay at SOG Klappspaten solution...:-)))))))) (okay no good idea downtown Helsinki)

    What happens if the cassette is 90% full and you drive over a big bump? Presumably the contents of the cassette could spill into the hose?

  • @dougie336
    @dougie336 2 роки тому

    I'm thinking about using one of these, but it must smell absolutely revolting when you're emptying it? The beauty of the chemical toilets is the chemicals stop it from smelling whilst you pour the contents out

    • @Vantasticvan
      @Vantasticvan  2 роки тому +1

      We have now used the SOG fan for years. We dont think it smells revolting, or maybe we have just get used to the smell hahah? We empty our toilet approx two times a week. We still use the toilet chemical if we cannot empy our toilet for weeks, because we are scared it will stink horrible if it sits there for too long time.

    The blue stuff will (as far as I know) kill a septic tank, though, so you need to be careful about where you dump it. However, I've heard good things about Elsan green/organic toilet fluid, but not sure if you can get those in Finland, it may be a UK only thing. But people seem to think it works quite well to control odor, and you can use it both as flushing fluid and tank treatment. One chemical to rule them all? Personally I'm getting a composting toilet when I get my van. I know they import the Nature's Head to Europe at least, but I'd prefer the Airhead. Gotta empty pee every few days, but you only have to empty the solids once every few weeks. I wouldn't personally stop using fluids in the toilet just because you have a fan now though. The fluids do help break down the solids too (a little) so it's easier to empty and doesn't stink as much.

    • @ukbusman
      @ukbusman 5 років тому

      Your right, all septic tank dumps ask you not to use blue loo chemical as it kills the enzymes that break down the toilet waste. The pink and the green additives are friendlier, but don't work so well in breaking down the waste and the poo smell is not masked regardless of how much you put in.

    • @lorcro2000
      @lorcro2000 5 років тому

      @@ukbusman Yep, the Thetford green stuff is complete garbage from what I've read. But, the Elsan green (that replaces both the green and pink, can be used for both) has gotten rave reviews. And well, using something a bit more nature friendly if at all possible isn't a bad thing.

    I suspect the fan creates to little vacuum to pull the urine up and across the length of the hose to the fan and filter. Now if you moving and the toilet tank is full and splashing then you could encounter liquids in the extraction hose. In this problem a filter sponge may be useful.
