      There is nothing baffling about this. Socialists don't know how to manage finances. They believe that money is in itself valuable, not merely a unit of exchange for things that have actual value like property, labour, etc., so their solutions to problems will always be "Give us more money" even if it doesn't solve problems of supply (housing).

    • @kenmcintosh9480
      @kenmcintosh9480 День тому

      You are missing something. There's nothing crazy about this tax increase. As an example, if you own a 500k property, this would cost you only $250 PER YEAR, which is $20 per month. This will not increase rents by 10%.

      @@kenmcintosh9480 Do you want 250$ going out of your pocket to the city to spend on Toronto City branded crack pipes to hand out? Or in your pocket to spend on groceries, a new pair of jeans, or seeing the dentist? The math goes for a 500k residential home in Toronto you pay $3331.37 a year in property tax to the city. This increase brings it up to $3561.23. Making the bill $296.77/month. And remember it wasn't even a year ago that it went up 10%.
      The average value of a home in Toronto is $1,067,186, not 500k. Making those city taxes $7110.38/year before the 6.9% increase. An increase of $490.62/year bringing the total up to $7601/year equal to $633.42/month. On average.

      Same in Vancouver. Our property taxes went up a lot more than 6.9% than this year, and that's after nearly 20% hike in the past two years. They do this by revaluing your home to estimations that no one in the market would actually pay. They claim that our taxes went up "only 3.9%" this year, but the actual dollar amount is well over 10%. Clown world. Home ownership will be only for the upper class in Vancouver and Toronto. Those of us who are legacy homeowners because we bought three decades ago will be priced out of own homes because we don't be able to pay the taxes and upkeep anymore. When development charges ran out as open land was all developed, the accounting slight of hand had to stop. All the 905 municipalites benchmark local taxes and other service comparitors against one another and further afield to try to keep things in line. Can't say what Toronto does thought they seem quite a bit more interested in virtue signalling than fiscal probity. Mississauga and Brampton were definitely leaders in keeping tax increases down but there was not a 30 year freeze, (Seriously, htf would that even work with inflation??)

    But with the cost of utilities and food skyrocketing, that is what this property tax increase will amount to for many Toronto homeowners .

    At the beginning of the video, Mayor Olivia Chow attempts to justify property tax increases with a statement that "..housing costs are sky high" in a city where "..everyone belongs". Mayor Chow should ask herself WHY Toronto is in such bad shape- compared with its municipal neighbour to the north - the City of Vaughan, whose municipal budget focuses on the fundamentals, such as: maintaining physical transportation, water, wastewater, and public transit infrastructure, public health, education, parks, libraries and recreational facilities, snow and waste removal, police and fire services.
    The City of Vaughan balances its budgets every year. There are no billion dollar cost overruns, social assistance and social housing are NOT significant expenditures. Streets are in good condition. Crime, poverty and homeless encampments remain low or non-existent. There is no garbage in the streets, no gambling joints or marijuana dispensaries. And its annual property tax increases are modest by comparison with Toronto's.

Those who want more services should pay for it - e.g. who needs libraries to stay open 7 days a week the current operating hours have worked for generations. Every new service should have to meet a cost-benefit criteria. Full cost of TTC should be reflected in fares not passed on to hapless homeowners. They should make more services pay as you go.
