Rosario needed to take a knee. He was all over the place and getting hit clean. At this stage of his career Rosario still had his power and skills but zero punch resistance. In winning the title by knocking out Garza in a one-sided fight it was still noticeable that he was stunned briefly by a hard jab at the start of the 3rd. In this fight the first solid shots Hiranaka landed he was shaken. The major weakness of Rosario as a fighter was his relative lack of what's called "ring generalship" - against attacking fighters, unless he imposed his power he struggled to control the fight. Hiranaka was strong and aggressive and came out swinging but a fighter of Rosario's ability and experience should have been able to out-maneuver him in the early going. There was no way the Japanese could keep throwing that that, even for the whole first round, without blowing up. But Rosario got involved in wild exchanges, trying for the KO immediately and got staggered himself. A fighter with more tactical guile would have defused the challenger, avoided his swings, picked him off with counters and then gradually taken him apart after he'd lost his early impetus. Rosario's people needed to get a fight with Chavez or Camacho straight after his spectacular KO of Garza, either of which would have been for big money. Instead 10 months go by and King has him and Chavez on a double-header here, to set up a rematch, with Camacho at ringside. Obviously nobody realized the extent of Rosario's deterioration and those plans got derailed. Granted, Chavez would have stopped him within 6 rounds, but Camacho would've been a fight he'd have had some chance in as Hector would have backpedaled.
I don't think he punch resistance was all gone, he got hurt but he didn't go down. Clearly by 1992 Rosario was nowhere near the figther he was when he stopped Bramble in the second and the fight against Chavez, Rosario took a savage beating and his best punches bounced off Chavez's jaw like nothing.
Rosario did clock Hiranaka, but it only momentarily fazed him and then he cracked Rosario and landed a substained fuselage of power punches. I don't think it was lack of ring generalship on Rosario's part, it was him always wanted to prove his toughness. He had a pretty damn good chin, it just wasn't on par with a prime Chavez's. Then again who can claim a better chin than Chavez in his prime.
@@charleslowe522 Those are good points and I was probably a bit harsh on Rosario's punch resistance. I think it would have been better to say that he was getting hit clean and most can only do that so often before it gets to them. That and him being a natural Lighweight who looked a bit small at 140.
The Mexican crowd cheering hard for a Japanese fighter shows just much they HATED Rosario, especially for his comments about Julio Cesar Chavez a few years prior... they didn't forget.. RIP El Chapo and I liked Hiranaka's style. very similar to Fighting Harada's.

Indeed, Rosario, the legendary Puerto Rican who I believe was more talented than Cotto-even close to Gomez, Benitez and Trinidad, may have been being defeated by drugs and alcohol then, but I don’t think he was in such a bad condition in this fight (by the way, Hiranaka said after the fight that Rosario's left hook&uppercut was incredible, so fast that he could hardly see it, and the hardest one he'd ever taken as well). Nor do I think this was just another one of those upsets. Hiranaka, who had not been "a former street fighter from Japan" LOL but a fomer Olympian of 1984 LA, was almost robbed in his previous title shot against Coggi in 1989. He deserved this win.
sorry for only getting back to you now. are you enjoying watching world cup now? sorry about your country(and my country), but definitely Argentina gave France the hardest time ever in this tournament. He might not have had much of a presence, hidden under the shadow of Chávez, but I still remember him clearly as a boxer with skills characteristic of latino boxers, and ‘course his ”Látigo” left( those two defeated by him were both actually known for hardest puncher in Japan at the time, but were shut out one being KOd). not to mention that referee is to blame for it. Coggi was for sure a great boxer and still remains in my memory.

Well I thought it was a quick stoppage, however this might have been Ernesto Magana's come uppance for his horrible refereeing during the Roberto Duran vs Davey Moore fight, where he allowed Davey Moore to receive unbridled punishment from Duran when Moore was unable to defend himself.
Man...what would Boxing in the ‘80’s have been if all of the fighters weren’t strung out on drugs. Rosario was a cokehead at this point. Only 29 and already beyond washed up. Sad.
Rosario looked huge and show, showed none of the defense that he showed against Howard Davis. Part of it is because of Hiranaka's crowding style. But I also think that Rosario is past it, at this point.
Rosario was lucky that the referee stopped this fight. Rosario would have been ko'd and possibly seriously injured. This is boxing and too many punches to the head would have left Rosario talking like Wilfred Gomez. All of the fights that Gomez won required him to take lots of shots to the head. The same with Rosario. Rosario was made to pay for all of the trash that he said to JC Chavez prior to their fight. That person who wrote that the Japanese sports could not translate into English should not be criticizing anyone. Smokey
