Pittsburgh Modular Taiga keyboard Review

- Following on from the Taiga desktop synth comes the Taiga Keyboard with larger knobs, improved oscillator tuning, some interesting digital thingies and an expansion bay for Eurorack. It's analogue, it mashes together all sorts of synthesis and sounds unlike anything else out there. Here's my review.
Pittsburgh Modular were kind enough to send the Taiga keys to me for review but have no control over what I say about it.

Thanks for reviewing. I wish Pittsburgh would talk more about how the ADSRs are supposed to be used. I get they are the ones they have always used, but they just don't make sense and supposedly Pittsburgh even changed them with the Keyboard to make them more how people wanted them.
Thank you for the deep dive into this intriguing keyboard. What you provided me with is an insight into its possibilities as well as its features. As I have been mostly making music from virtual instruments I have been longing to incorporate a knob per function synth into my studio. The Taiga seems to check all the boxes as well as providing, it seems, easy entry into modular, which also fascinates me. The Taiga brought me here but now I will check out your other videos.
Man, that thing can sound FAT. And I love your vids the most. I love when you start off with CHAOS and get distracted. That’s a real review. And I’m only half way through it.
Great demo..you made me not want it at all anymore,I can sleep now without thinking about it.cheers love your vids
I have no idea how to take that :D
I believe that on the original the limited tuning is when the synth is driven by midi. When off midi, the tuning works the same as you describe on the T. Keyboard. And the point, I believe, was to make it easier to tune with midi and also to do chords more easily.
You might be right. And you always had a keyboard attached to it via midi, so it was always in that state
Hot Tip - So actually the 2 waveforms display is the warp circuit before the wave folder. So Sine/Triangle is Warped Sine. It changes the resulting tones. This is especially eveident between Saw and Warped Saw. They sound basically the same before folding, but you'll hear very different results with the wave folder. You can hear the folded version smooths out those dips. Both sound cool to my ears, just different.
Good tip
I hear a lot of people say they don’t like the sound of the taiga or it doesn’t do anything for them, I think it has a nice sound myself.
Many Thanx as usual, wanted to know what is the light moving gear with sound?
doukaudio.com/ VM-1 - it wasn't quite as effective as i hoped in this video. I think it's better on microphone mode rather than having it plugged into the synth which is what i had here. I will experiment some more!
1) great shirt!
2) what’s the mixer u r using there?
Thank for the video. I got this yesterday and in spite of having the desktop version for a year I am struggling with this. I'm still not completely convinced my unit isn't faulty. Weird things like playing a scale and a couple of random nots will be several octaves high! Sending a middle C over middle plays as C6 and some other weird stuff. PM are great at support though with very fast response times.
That is weird. The only problem I've encountered is the odd stuck note when messing about between the ARP and playing, otherwise, nothing unexpected.
@@MoltenMusicTech I'm giving it a good go today - before I discuss sending it back for a replacement. One other weird thing I've never come actoss before - the LEDs stay lit after it's switched off - unless I pull the USB out! That's not normal is it.
I would definitely try it without usb connection. Maybe midi is messing with it. I haven’t used mine over usb other than to update the firmware
@@MoltenMusicTech I'll keep you posted PM are helping now but the shop I got it from suspects it's faulty.
Sounds great and like the concept. Would go or it but £. Not that it's expensive for what it is/does.
Could you patch in legato with the ole Arp trick?
Erm... don't know that one, you'll have to explain it.
@@MoltenMusicTech Heh I had to look it up to remind myself exactly what it was.
On the Arp Odyssey you patch Gate Out into Trigger in and this prevents the EG from retriggering on overlapping note presses.
I'd love to know if this works on Taiga! I'm totally into the bloops / sequenced nonsense that comes with a semi modular, but I'm also thinking the Taiga could be an absolute BEAST for some totally uniquely voiced funk bass playing. For my style, I like legato, especially since we can link up those beautiful voices to the EG!
So, you're saying I should try taking the keyboard gate output and patch it into the trigger inputs on the envelopes?
I’d consider it if they just tossed a few more oscillators behind that bigger panel and made it more poly. Single filter is ok. Already have a keyboard under my rack to just play the original.
If you had to leave two modules in the slots permanently to have a dedicated as-is synth, which two would you want in there?
A reverb definitely - the Erica Black Reverb is definitely sounding amazing in there. And probably a sequencer because you can sequence one oscillator while playing the others.
I wanna try chucking the behringer pp1 if I ever grab this synth
Whats that little (cirular) display thing you've got?

For me 4U is the perfect size (3U too cramped, 5U too big) ala Buchla and Serge. I agree at 3U the Taiga is cramped so glad it's now in a bigger form factor.
I'd go 4U in a heartbeat if the price for entry weren't so high. I built a pretty respectable euro system for less than an easel command (or thereabouts). Euro can definitely get cramped. But there's plenty of choice of modules that have big knobs and lots of space. Smart module placement, choice of modules and rack layout does wonders in euro. I'm definitely guilty of squeezing some smaller modules in there though.
@@sergoz123 Very true. While I have had a 4U Buchla system in the past, my current setup is a 3U TipTop/Buchla case.
What is that round display next to your tablet?

Keybed feel good?
Yes, not bad at all, similar to Modal, better than Modwave which is what i currently have to hand :D
@@MoltenMusicTechhey, sorry for late reply. How do you feel about the modwave after having owned it for awhile?
Bleep! Bloop! Bleeeeeeeeeep!!
your mic is picking the pressure from your hands..
Ok, ….is that a good or bad thing?
@@MoltenMusicTechi think what they mean is that the vibrations from when you're hitting the keys is being picked up by your recorder on the left. You can hear it at the end when you play the keyboard with the sound off.
Again, is that good or bad and how does it matter?
