      I still consider Ocarana my fav. I consider Link to the past 2nd and despite its many flaws Link is my 3rd.
      Breath of the wild is 4th because I disliked shrines and open world. Not because I thought it was bad more so because I like linear games, I get lost far less. and the length of the location dungeons way to short for me to feel like enough was there.
      The puzzles that did exist and the living off the land element was still fun enough for me to put it no lower than 4.
      Great Retrospective; I had not cleared the game and enjoyed hearing how there was to see yet. I am doggedly trying to reign in the black and white horse since I want to ride Shadowfax Gandalfs horse and its coloring reminds me of it. Eventually I will try to ride a Lyonel as I heard one could... sounds insanely hard so why not.
      So much to do so when I do play I still have most of the map to wander on.
      Can't wait for BotW2.

    i have no idea if this has been said but, in my opinion, the majority of the piano compositions feel almost lonely with a tint of subtle, silent hope mixed in. like the land could be silent but it isn’t, it sings with some semblance of hope in the hero

    This was my first Zelda game, and no matter what it's flaws, it'll always be among my favorite games ever made. It also helped me get into the franchise, by exploring past games.

      That's how I feel about Skyward Sword. It was my first LoZ game because all I had growing up was a Wii and DS with limited games for both. I watched some stuff about Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, which began my interest in the LoZ series and I asked for a LoZ game for Christmas, which is when I got Skyward Sword. It makes me sad that most LoZ fans seem to hate that game and refuse to play it, even with the switch version, which allows you to play with buttons instead of motion controls. It's actually really important to the story of LoZ since it's the first in the timeline, and shows the world before Hyrule and what started the curse that causes the cycle of Link, Zelda, and Ganon. That game means a lot to me, even with all of its flaws, and it will always be one of my favorite games of all time.

    • @__idfk__
      @__idfk__ 7 місяців тому

      @@chrisd6287 I do understand why a lot of the fandom doesn't like it. I know the game is flawed and that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. That doesn't mean that I can't feel how I feel about the game and wish that more people would give it a chance instead of immediately writing it off just because others don't personally like it or because of the bad reputation of the motion controls. I never said that the fandom as a whole has to like it or anything, but I know there are a lot of people in the fandom who haven't played it and there are plenty of people who would like it if they did play it.
      I don't really understand what you mean by "experiencing the series organically." For me, the way I have experienced it is organic. To try to achieve a different experience that you deem "more organic" would mean that it literally wouldn't be organic for me because I'd be forcing myself to have a specific experience that didn't happen naturally for me. Does that make sense?

    • @chrisd6287
      @chrisd6287 7 місяців тому

      @@__idfk__ based on your response you do understand what I mean by organically. I get the sense that you think im gatekeeping and that really wasn't my intention. All I was saying is experiencing a game in it's time, in the progression of the series without any future context is different. Much different. For many reasons which you seem smart enough to know I won't list here. Also just curious, what console did you play it on first?

    • @__idfk__
      @__idfk__ 7 місяців тому

      @@chrisd6287 As mentioned in my original comment, I played it on Wii because a Wii and a DS are all I had for video game consoles. When I first played it, I went in completely blind because I was new to the fandom and I honestly hadn't even heard of Skyward Sword before I got it. All I really knew was that the Legend of Zelda series seemed very interesting and I wanted to try playing one of the games, which happened to be Skyward Sword. I had a good experience with the game and it led to me looking into the series more, especially the lore, which made me appreciate SS and its story even more. I've played other LoZ games since then and while they are absolutely amazing and I do see why most people prefer them, Skyward Sword will always hold a very special place in my heart because it was the start of me playing my favorite video game series.
      I understand the flaws of Skyward Sword and why they can be off-putting to some, but I think it's unfortunate that there are players that would like the game if they played it that don't give it a chance because others act like it's so bad when over all, it's not a bad game. I feel that there are many aspects that it does very well. That's why the negativity surrounding the game in the LoZ fandom makes me sad.

    I realized that the most important thing I want in a game is this: Atmosphere and Exploration.
    Skyrim, Witcher 3, and Breath of the Wild are perfect examples of this. These games make you want to explore every stream, mountain, cave and reward you for exploring.

  • @jessicaable5095

    I feel like the no underwater exploration was understandable since that would've required an entirely new level of world building the developers would've had to worry about. Also, if we'd have had one area we could explore, we'd have spent the rest of the game wondering why we couldn't go underwater anywhere else. Might've broken the immersion slightly. Here's hoping for Tears of the Kingdom though! It would be pretty awesome
    Edit: on the rain bit now. In my recent playthrough I was determined to enter Zora's domain any way but the intended way. I ended up climbing the massive cliff face off to the side of Akala tower. Took me forever. Had to stockpile stamina foods, but if you do a jump every third hand hold up the cliff then you can make veeeery steady progress. Was a b*tch to do though 😅

    Yeah, when it comes to the soundtrack, you are spending so much time in the overworld exploring every cave and river that something loud and bombastic would just get so grating over time. The only way you can prompt a continuous piece of music in the overworld is by entering any fights with monsters and guardians, or by hopping on a horse. Ride for a bit with a horse and you get a beautiful melody that incorporates the Hero's theme or Zelda's lullaby, depending on whether you're riding at night or during the day. It's brilliant. How they do it in this game is perfect. They don't even use the same ambient track for every part of Hyrule. What you showcased here was Hyrule Field's theme I think. Everywhere else has different tracks, like Hebra, Death Mountain, and Gerudo Desert, using different instruments too.

    I think the reason that Lynel’s don’t have boss healthbars is because those big bars makes a player feel like they *need* to defeat the boss, and while that works to scare the player in the early game it wouldn’t work with something as tough as a Lynel, since in the early game you are not meant to fight them

    The soundtrack of botw, and it’s sound design as a whole, was a huge breath of fresh air for me upon release. While I love the catchy and exciting tracks of the previous games, we’ve had it before many times. Very few games manage to feel so cohesive in tone throughout every facet of design. Botw always felt like it was beckoning me forward, asking me to take the stage when I felt the time was right, never pushing, never saying that I had to act or feel any other way than the way I wanted to. It’s also one of four games that I return to to just to take everything in, the other three all being fromsoft games.

    Great video, but I do think that the silly little side tasks that don't really offer a huge reward afterwards is also a testament to Links personality. Because it shows that he is willing to help people even if there's not a huge reward in it for him. I also like to think that thunderblight Gannon is so difficult because Urbosa was the most talented and skilled warrior of five of them at the time and it's testament of the stand she took against the thunderblight when the calamity first happened

    Phew, just finished. What an incredible video, it's a crime it doesn't have more likes. Brilliant work!
    P. S. I will mention that I think Kas was always aware of who Link is. He reveals when you see him in Rito Village again after completing all his quest that his mission was actually to share his master's songs and aid the hero on his journey. That's why we can only see him in his village after we've completed them all. While I can't remember if he outright says that he knows, it's definately heavily implied. I love his character so much 😊

    On the music part of the video, the “randomness” of the notes are supposed to invoke the feeling of unfamiliarity and curiosity, which is something I think all of us felt when playing the game for the first time.
    I like that in another clip of the soundtrack you played (11:20), you can hear what sounds like a second of rewind in the music, like a memory trying to reel you back in time.

    Balloon flight is about the _lore_ and _hints_ and not so much the actual execution. This is the only place in the game where someone Says something that hints at both skyloft and the dawn of the cycle and the floating islands of tears of the kingdom. I personally think Link's reason for not talking is a pretty good reason for this specific Link and isn't even THAT grand as his reason is meant to kinda relate to Zelda in the sense that his role is well known by everyone, he's the main hero who's tasked with guarding the Princess specifically and ultimately beating Ganon when he emerges. He was tasked this at a pretty young age and it's easy to think he had conflicting feelings about it but because he's loyal to his duties as a knight (probably trying to follow his father in that regard) he chooses not to complain or talk about them and just do it, people who have problems choose not to talk about them all the time and bottling your emotions like that would have you be less inclined to talk aloud. I think it's appropriate for this Link to just feel obligated to do what he's supposed to do without openly expressing how he feels about it.

    24:08 link in BOTW has bullet time by lore. When he is moving and everything else seems frozen in time, flurry rush, arrow shooting, that’s not just a gameplay mechanic. People notice that he moves ultra fast in universe you can read it in a journal in game. So his eating animation that plays in the menu would just play out like his bullet time events.

    I see zelda content on par of a review or retrospective or theory from a unique perspective?
    I click.
    And now that tears of hyrule is a thing Whoop de fucking doo.
    Best way to experience this game is with different eyes for repeat playthroughs.
    Why replay when you can see someone else be overwhelmed, when... you can legit suggest... anywhere. This game is mainly the best enbodiment of "its not the destination buy the journey"

    I’ve been a gamer since mid 90’s. I played some NES (mostly Mario and Contra) but my first console was Ps1…only played Nintendo 64 really at friends. Games like Mario Party, Super Smash, Goldeneye. Never played Ocarina of Time or anything. Never owned a GameCube as I was mostly on PS2/Xbox and later on Ps3, PS4 and such. Anyway long story short Breath of the Wild was the first Zelda game I played from beginning to end and it’s probably my favorite game of all time. The open world, the sandbox, the variety of the map, the secrets it’s an unbelievable experience from start to finish.

    Finally, someone who shares my exact opinion on weapon durability.
    Though in the sequel, I kinda hope they let players prioritize weapon types late into the game. If someone really likes spears, having some sort of skill tree or branching upgrade that increases the effectiveness of specific weapon types would be kinda cool.

    • @SuperCameraGuBrothers
      @SuperCameraGuBrothers  2 роки тому +1

      That would be pretty cool, though if there were a skill tree I'd hope it would have a cool spin on it since for the most part I don't think that Zelda would work as well with how they traditionally are implemented.

      @@SuperCameraGuBrothers Oh, absolutely. The idea I came up with would be a combination of the spirit orbs and koroks. You would collect Tears by finding them lying around in hard to reach places, doing mini puzzles, and completing shrines. All of which would give you varying amounts based on difficulty.
      Using them, you could either upgrade stats in a progressively more expensive manner (hearts, stamina, digestion [to fix the food system], base stealth, base attack, base defense, and base speed), or unlock abilities on a tree like weapon type mastery, rain climbing, auto heart regen, faster stamina regen, etc.

    I hated the korok seeds. Seems to me Nintendo just leaned on them waaay too hard to fill out the world. After a while I stopped exploring because every time I found a hidden or interesting looking place, all I'd find was another korok seed.
    I don't need crazy new items or bonuses when I explore, just something INTERESTING is all I wanted. A small bit of implied lore or world history would be fine. But every. Single. Time. Just a korok seed. Felt incredibly lazy to me.

    • @SuperCameraGuBrothers
      @SuperCameraGuBrothers  2 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't necessarily call it lazy considering that they were at least all hidden by a puzzle (albeit very simple puzzles) but I can see where you're coming from

    • @BodTheGrinch
      @BodTheGrinch 2 роки тому +3

      @@SuperCameraGuBrothers Yeah unfortunately the puzzles were repeated so many times it felt like much the same thing over and over.
      To be fair though, lazy probably isn't the right word anyway. I'm guessing time and resource were the real issue, which is always going to be a problem in a game of this scale. It'll be interesting to see how they approach this issue in the new one.

    Probably no one is going to read this after a year, but I just replayed botw and got a new perspective on the weapon breaking discussion: For me it's not so much the frustration of losing an item - you're right, there's always a new tool just around the corner - it's rather that i just don't care about any of the weapons i found. Weapons in botw are more of a resource much like a good cooking ingredient. In other Zelda games new tools opened up new parts of the world and new game mechanics, so finally finding them was a memorable moment. In botw there are exactly two of these classic Zelda moments: Getting the glider and gettng the master sword.
    It's still a great game, probably the best open world sandbox I've ever experienced, but it's not my favorite take on the Zelda concept. I hope I get to experience the next iteration of the series maybe in a decade or two …
    Having played the first Zelda as a little kid the thought of this franchise probably outliving me is a strange one.

    Best way to see the difference is how they deal with a remote bomb.
    Red will run past them, blues may try and kick them, blacks will use their weapon to kick it back, and white and gold, might just walk around it depending on if it's a smart idea to hit it back.

    • @SuperCameraGuBrothers

      Fair point. I have never really used bombs in combat situations due to how weak they are, so it's not something that I would have picked up on. I guess I just would've liked it there was more to enemy scaling than higher damage and certain occasions where they are smarter

    Oh. Well the memories aren't actually Links Memories of Himself. They're _Zelda's_ memories of _him._ that's why there's always someone else there. He didn't have the slate, she did, and so the only person who Could Have taken the pictures was her, and she saved him the pictures and memories she felt would be most useful. Not the most impactful, not the most emotionally deep, not the intrinsic parts of his personality or anything about his family or any of his childhood because what use is there for feelings when we're in an apocalyptic war? She saved him the memories that would tell him why he needed to be a hero, why he needed to be a weapon.

    You mentioned it in passing, but this game is clearly aimed at expanding the player base. Half of the changes you suggest to improve the game would have turned me off, since they’d have made it too difficult (as a person who did not particularly like games and generally found them a waste of time). The difficulty is still a bit high for me in parts (ToTS), but I am playing in Master Mode, now, and have spent hundreds of hours in the game. I am now a screaming fanatic and have literally bought 3 copies of the game AND DLC (2 Switch, one WiiU for modding) and an extra Switch OLED (so I don’t have to share with my kids) and the collector’s book. Nintendo angered a few long-time fans, irritated a lot of them, and gained millions of new ones. They hit this one out of the park.
    As for your video, it was quite balanced, for a long-time fan, and very enjoyable. The errors were weird-you cannot complete the recital at Warbler’s nest using arrows-and you sounded drunk half the time, which made it hard to understand some of what you said. I agreed so much in the beginning, were you talked about people complaining for nothing because they’re too good at games, but later you complained in the same way about lots of things. Some things you found trivial took me literal hours to complete (Vah Medoh) and others I didn’t even notice were supposed to be challenges, yet you list a bunch of steps one ‘has’ to go through. Like almost every flame challenge in a shrine is negated by the Flamebreaker Armour (thank goodness!) Game knowledge can make many challenges trivial, which rewards game knowledge for people scared of games, like me.
    My point is that there is even more complexity to this game than you describe, and you describe a LOT. Great job! I watched the entire vid, and a few parts multiple times.
    I don’t know whether I’ll still be playing this game in 4 years (I found it Jan 2022)-I hope not, since I don’t actually have the time-but Nintendo made their money on me, and I will be playing ToTK as soon as it comes out. Or maybe I’ll have to wait for summer. Either way, new fan.

    I didn't see anyone mention it on the comments so i will. It is believed that the Forgotten Temple is what the Sacred Grounds in Skyward Sword was and that Giant Goddess statue is the same one that fell from Skyloft to finish off Avocado Demise. Personally i feel the Goddess statue in SS was much bigger but until someone actually does pixel perfect measurements we can't really be 100% certain and then there is the Zelda team who tends to retcon small details like that.

    I think a good way to navigate the food being overpowered argument could be a system where only 5 ration slots are available during combat. Outside of combat you can eat however much you want but during battle you need to be selective of what you put into your ration slots. Sort of like Estus charges but not refillable unless you cook something obviously.
