- The European MD-11 is no more. On October 17th, the last remaining carrier on the continent using the type operated its final flight with the tri-jet after more than two decades of use. Lufthansa Cargo will now retire the jet as it moves to a Boeing 777F fleet for its cargo operations.

One of the most beautiful aircraft ever built...and they didn't look any better than in Lufty colours. Farewell, Lufty MD-11. You will be dearly missed.
I would say DC10 looks better.
@@nntflow7058 shorter length or lack of winglets? Those are mostly the visual differences after all.
For me the winglets with the bottom tip there too are one of the best parts, of course other than the tail engine and the angry-looking cockpit windows
BA Scrapped all MD-11s but hopefully those spares will keep all the other Tri jets running.
MD-11 was my favorite plane of tall time. Just incredible looking.
It's okay to cry, it's okay.
I already missed the LH MD11 when the retirement was announced. Unfortunately I only spotted D-ALCC but I think that’s better than nothing :) I‘ve also been at Frankfurt Airport when the Last LH MD11 arrived at Fra. It‘s just a beautiful Aircraft and it was a pleasure to me, to get some pictures of this beauty 😍😢
I will miss the plane. It is a unique piece with a fantastic service history. Welcome to the new 777 F!!
So sad to see the md-11 retire from Lufthansa, but I am happy to see it live on once more at western global.
I still remember seeing Lufthansa Cargo's MD-11s when I was a kid, sad to see them being retired.
Yes i am. For now, 115 MD-11s are still in active service as freighter version and here's the list :
57 MD-11F for Fedex
42 MD-11F for UPS and
16 MD-11F for Western Global Airlines (the last MD-11F from Lufthansa Cargo is not yet enter the fleet)
Are you saying this aircraft in particular (ex lufty cargo) is still going to be flying?
@@planesimple8619 yes its going to continue flying with WGA
@@planesimple8619 He covered that in the video. Guess you didn't watch.
@@johniii8147 yes. And i was watching the video.
@@planesimple8619 Go to 2:27. It's covered extensively from there
I had managed to spot one of these MD-11Fs from Lufthansa alongside another FedEx MD-11F at Mumbai in 2017, but from a Jet Airways 737 taxiing off the runway...
This plane has (now had) the best colour scheme & livery I'd ever seen. We'll miss this guy...
Retired British ATC guy, airliner nerd, and spotter here. I managed to see all 200 of the MD-11s produced, although somehow I never got to fly in one.
I spotted a LH Cargo last year at CYYZ! Great day! I will definitely miss this one
Start an F in the chat chain for MD-11's and the other 3+ engines jet aircrafts

I will definitely miss it. I spotted it being loaded, taking off, and landing 🤩
The lady of the skies is truly a unique aircraft, sad to see them go.
I saw this 777 freighter in Frankfurt 2 days ago. It is all white and in black letters on the fuselage it says:
NATURAL BEAUTY! WAITING TO GET THE LUFTHANSA CARGO LIVERY! Nice!
As part of the WGF this MD11 will fly for many more years...
Flew on Finnair MD11s in the 90’s frequently between JFK-HEL. Air travel was still fun in the first half of the 90’s. Airports were not that packed then. And I often received free upgrades to business and twice to First class. When mass travel by air became more common and most flights were packed = no free upgrades. And the personal service started to disappear. But I do like the Boeing 787 and AB 350, which can deliver you to destinations directly without change of aircraft!
But I will miss the days I flew with the MD 11.
Had the honour of seeing D-ALCC land many times. 🇮🇪
The MD11 is a beautiful plane. Seen them many times while changing flights in Frankfurt
Yes I have spotted Lufthansa MD-11 at Mumbai Airport.
Rip LH MD11s 😭😭😭
This is sad, my heart breaks to see this beauty go! No other plane comes close to its bizarre design!
I saw The MD-11 when i was taking off nur Lufthansa Cargo of the MD is gonna be Dearly missed
Md-11 Its a Iconic Quality Great Airplanes for is time..Eventhougth its only for Cargo use now..Still its a worth plane to operate as today for some companies....
I get to enjoy a UPS MD-11f that flies into Pittsburgh PA. Enjoyed riding these back when they were DC-10s. Distinct engine sound.
I’m going to miss the MD11 loved flying Y class rear of the cabin with AZ and DL ! Beautiful aircraft 👌
One of the best freighter planes to see in any color will miss seeing this remarkable aircraft in Lufthansa colors especially the new colors of Lufthansa
The MD-11 was one of my favorite aircraft :( I’m sad that plane is now retired but I followed his last on Flightradar24
people in the comments here really don't watch the entire video do they?
they really dont 😕
Lufthansa MD11s flew over my house many times as they approach JFK. I’ll miss seeing MD11s that are not from FedEx or UPS.
Lucky you get to see them, since I live in Germany, I won't get to see any of them now
I saw it a couple weeks ago in Frankfurt. Sad.
I have once spotted Lufthansa MD-11 at my home airport .....
The last KDC10 tanker/transporter of the RNAF was also retired at the 5th of Oktober this month.
It was the last DC10 in operation in Europe.
the end of an era no more tri-jets in use by European carriers/military.
Sad to see MD11 left Europe for good, but glad that it wasn’t the end of the line for the aircraft. Although there’re still more than 100 MD11 in service, with more switching to B777F and the imminent introduction of A350F, I’m afraid another wave of MD11 retirement is inevitable...
Shame as I loved the MD-11 and it went well in Lufthansa's livery. Still, times change, things move on.
Side note, I've seen a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 land and take off at Manchester in the UK before. I also always used to see it fly onto Manchester over my house, which is on the flight path.
Its sad To Know The Lufthansa MD-11F Is Farewell But The Last Times Is I Have a Drawing Of Lufthansa MD-11F The Farewell Livery
The MD-11 will always be a legend
No, it was considered a big failure for MD. It one of the things that led to the merger with Boeing since it sold so poorly.
It was quite the plane to see with the Lufthansa livery
I´ll miss every single retaired MD-11, the most beautiful airplane ever bilt!!!
I saw it on Saturday standing all alone in Frankfurt Airport
Used to enjoy seeing Lufthansa’s MD-11’s at Auckland on their round the world service
I saw the MD11 3 years ago now at LHR outside Ascents on stand 601 when I worked at the airport.
I saw is departing from Manchester aswell as the world Airways MD 11 a few years back
i never saw D-ALCC but i saw it on FlightRadar24 on the 14th flying back to Frankfurt. never knew it was just 2 days till it's final revenue flight.
Minor nitpick: when the video mentioned that the last MD-11 passenger flight took place on 2014, it should've shown the retired KLM MD-11 taxiing with a DC-3 leading it.
Other than that, great video.
at the 5th of october the last KDC10 of the RNAF made a farewell tour over the Netherlands.
It was the last DC10 in operational in Europe.
Only the US and the Netherlands had converted from passenger to military tanker/transport DC10's
The end of the tri-jet era.
😭😭😭 Tschüss meine freunde MD-11.
Putting a end to a nice aircraft for ever. May MD-11s REST IN PEACE, WE WELL NEVER FORGET THAT AIRCRAFT WE WELL NEVER FORGET THAT MD-11 R.I.P MD-11
*rest in peace
I spotted two GEC MD-11Fs at Frankfurt Airport a while back and during a layover a few months ago I saw D-ALCC on a ramp position!
Noooooooo :( 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 R.I.P MD-11 :((
Sad😩
Super sad, Glad I saw it on her last Landing. Farewell, MD-11. Fly in Heaven Eleven. Hope you do well at Western Global!
I will miss it. Best plane for me!
I spotted it a few time while I was on an another airplane taxiing, at Frankfurt. Looked stunning. Am sad I could never on it as pax.
Yeah good avionics, but whit fly by wire missing.
Being personally involved in Lufthansa B747-200F,I shall not miss the MD11F.
Though MD11F is modern the 747F Nose Cargo operation was unique.
The Nose opening it actually very rarely used now. It's not a big factor for most carriers in picking a cargo plane.
At least they’re going to different Cargo Airlines not the scrapyard.
Definitely will miss it super glad I got photos of it on the ramp at jfk on the Friday they were supposed to be retired
Actually it makes me sad that i didnt even get the chance to try this aircraft and will never do😩
Same.
I was just born too late.
The MD-11 did also retire very fast, many airlines operated their MD-11 for less than a decade before replacing them.
It's crazy to see that the DC-10 lasted around 40 years as a passenger plane while the MD-11 barely made it to 20, both retiring in 2014
@@coconutdreams1238 ikr it was too fast
I understand that planes have specific age but this one was earlier
@@adibak6434 It was very early.
But if McDonnellDouglas had been able to invest a little more money and make the MD-11 a Twinjet, it could possibly have been a success since it has similar capabilities as the very popular Boeing 777
Alas, time spares nothing. Including the iconic 3 holers.
I miss all DC/MD Aircraft. Truly enjoyed flying on the Continental Airlines (the one before lorenzo) DC10’s with the PUB to and from HNL.
I have seen it in frankfurt landing
Tschüss 😔
LH MD-11s were frequently seen departing and arriving at YYZ, and I've seen those jets almost as frequently as those FedEx uses out of its dedicated cargo terminal there.
Saw the LH🇩🇪 MD-11F✈️ parked in Frankfurt Airport🏢 in Dec 2019🗓️ when i was on an airport🏢 bus🚌.
We still have the A300s from DHL that they insist to depart at 6am from several German airports... Beautiful airplanes, both A300 and MD-11 but also really noisy to operate at night in city airports (Europe has a huge number of them).
It is always a sari moment when the old iconic aircraft are retired. Among them, the DC 10, L 1011, eight 380, the DC9 and mad dog 80, and, of course, the 747. Today’s aircraft, aside from their size, are likeToday’s automobiles: they all look the same
They look the "same" because it's the most efficient design for aircraft with current technology.
I don't see how it can make sense to sell that airplane for $5 millions and pay over $200 millions for a new B-777 to
replace it. I don't think the other cargo carriers using it are losing money with it.
They sold D-ALCC for 5 millions?? I really doubt that, that's way to cheap.
Luthansa retires the MD11 and brings back the 747 400 what's going on at luthansa HQ
Different aircraft for totally different tasks, that’s what’s going on
@@spongebubatz the 400 is just not fuel efficient at all why bring it back now
@@biscuit4235 because you need the capacity until the 777X arrives! The B744 is of a size which is easier to fill than let’s say the A380 and when it’s full it still has an efficiency that’s quite alright.
All I wanted to say is that the MD11/B744 analogy doesn’t make sense
Maybe they’ll replace with a new ‘green jumbo’
I Have spotted in Mumbai
Great liver for a diecast model!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Trijets we're "designed" by the FAA, who required this configuration for long flights. Putting a big heavy engine in the tail end wasn't very bright. Thumbs up for the replacement, 777.
I haven’t flew saw this aircraft in person before. Sadly, they might be gone for many years and the majority in he sky were the twin-engine planes.
I have seen this plane in BLR
Cool
Will any MD-11's be preserved? Seems doubtful :(
Most of them are sold to other Cargo airlines
😭😭😭
on my bday? damn.
A suggestion: when converting kg in to, you should mentions which tons, txs!
What happened to Inge and Claudia, two lady Lufhansa pilots who made UA-cams of flying the MD11 freighter all over the world? Did they switch to the B777F? Does anyone know?
I have asked on an Air Clips video of the farewell to the MD-11. I know that Captain Fokko (founder of Cargo Human Care) has now retired from flying.
It seems like a waste of money to recently repaint it in the new livery then
The new livery lasted around 3 years which really isn't much.
But planes have to be repainted after a certain time anyways, that's probably why they did it
Oof, I never liked McDonnel Douglas (or whatever the company is named) but I feel ..... Sad 🙁
Then i Will make lufthansa md11 into fedex md11
To Museum ?? Or retired??
Its going to Western Global
Some will go to WGA
👍🏼
DCX/MDX is responsible for so many death.
we were fortunate to fly on an MD-11 by KLM approx 8years ago. We loved it. Were seated at the back, just under the engine
VERY SAD NEWS. Why are these aircrafts all retiring?? I wish no plane is ever reired. :( :(
Bye Bye Lufthansa Cargo MD-11🥲😢
However, I expect both UPS and FedEx to slowly phase out the MD-11F. Small wonder why Airbus is keen to build the A350XWB freighter variant.
Yes, the planning is well in place to replace them over time. FedEx in particular has been pretty agressive in orders for the 767F and 777F
