This video is amazing!! Great job on the Tagelharpas! Also I absolutely love the music that was played throughout the vid, especially the song that you two played at the end with the Tagelharpas, I wish I had it on my playlist😂
This is fascinating. I have always been intrigued by ancient instruments and how they are built. I have always been interested in ancient songs and sagas. I watched this with keen interest, especially your craftsmanship. My imagination conjures up images of those craftsmen and musicians of long ago who built these instruments by hand. The Viking war drums will be next on my list of things to watch. I am not a Viking. I have no Nordic blood within me but permit me to say this. By you building these instruments, you do honor to all of your ancestors and keep tradition and culture alive. You have earned a new subscriber.
Colour me impressed, this is certainly way more fancy and high quality than my tagelharpa which I built. I'll add this video to my list of inspiring designs for my future work so thanks a lot for that! One thing to note however, the title of this video is incorrect. Well, possibly it is anyway. There is absolutely no historical evidence whatsoever that the tagelharpa was played by Nordic people during the Viking era of Scandinavia. It may have been but we don't know that it was. The Viking era ended in the year 1066 and the earliest known use of a bowed lyre instrument in Scandinavia was the Jouhikko in the 14th century. There is a Nordic poem called Voluspa dating back to the 10th century which describes a plucked lyre though. I just want to make it absolutely clear that I'm not saying all of this as a criticism to you but rather just as an FYI sort of thing.
Thank you! We’re happy you like our design and build. That’s great that you also create instruments! We understand what you are saying about Viking instruments, but just because there is no proof doesn’t mean it wasn’t so. Vikings were intelligent enough to build superior ships and navigate extremely far distances over the high seas, forge with high carbon crucible steel, and were imaginative creators. We ought to give them more credit for their ingenuity and mechanical minds. Why would they not have figured out how to play stringed instruments with bows? Sure there may not be any tangible proof, partly because most instruments built back then wouldn’t have stayed preserved over 1000 years or even 500 years. Also they were not big writers. Most knowledge was passed down by word of mouth, who knows what has been lost never to be regained. It may not be best to fixate only on what facts scholars have recorded, but apply our belief to the mysterious history that was our ancestors. Also just to clear things up - 1. We are descendants of Vikings. The blood flows in our veins. Let’s keep their way alive! 2. AND these are our instruments. 3. That would make them Viking instruments. Haha!! Thanks for your input on the subject!
@@volfgangtwins I absolutely 100% agree with you that we need to give the Viking people a lot more credit than we do. I think it's a real shame how a lot of people seem to think they were just mindless barbarians who did nothing but drink alcohol and go on murder sprees. They were indeed very sophisticated as you say. A lot of misconceptions are floating around about them. I do really hope that in the future there will be more understanding about them and also of other historical people in general. Until then I think you summed it up best by saying to keep their ways alive. I do like your logic too that they are Viking instruments because they were built by people who have a Viking heritage. Well, thanks for the reply and keep up the work!
@@volfgangtwins The problem with that logic is just that just because something seems *obvious* to us doesn't mean that it did so at the time. Bows used as instruments has existed in our part of the world for a long, long time. But bows used to stroke string instruments where invented on the Asian stepps and only reached Europe around year 1000. So while we can't rule out that the vikings where early adoptors and used the tegelharpa before the official end of the viking age it most certainly did not exist during the majority of the viking era. If the vikings *did* know about them earlier then the idea would most likely have spread in Europe much earlier due to interactions that the vikings had with them, and even if there might not have been traces of the actual instruments we'd probably have seen writings from other civilisations that where literate at the time mentioning them. Stroking instruments where a innovation around year 1000 making instruments never before seen possible all over Europe, the Middleeast and Northern Africa and they where quite popular. The original 6 string viking lyre however where most definitively used during the viking age and where apparently popular among the upper class. Anyway, I absolutely love your work, they look amazing. =)

Crazy work ! Looks and sounds great ! it would be great if you can give some details like what kind of tree, and the measurements! (in my country I don't have the option to buy this instrument) so I want to build one ! Hoping to get help from you
The only part that would need to be kept up on is the strings since they are made of horse hair and are brittle, so over time it is likely that the strings could be replaced.
@ that makes sense. You guys are amazing woodworkers. If my grandpa was still alive (may he rest in peace) I bet you guys could give him a run for his money
Good work, fantastic video! I also have a dream to make talharpa, I have already bought horsehair and other accessories. I also like ambient music, sounds like a soundtrack from a game) Thank you, I wish you good luck in promoting the channel
I love stringed instruments. I played the violin in school and have been learning to play the harp for the last year or so. Someone recently built me a Tagelharpa with 3 strings. What notes should I tune them to? You guys have awesome craftmanship! I really enjoy watching the process.
Thank you! We have more artistic videos in the works as well as a new music video coming very soon. Be sure to stay tuned for more Viking inspired content! ⚔️👊🏻👊🏻⚔️
Very cool, been thinking about making my own! Not "as bad" as I initially thought, but still a fairly long process. Your method for stream bending is way more badass than mine, I scrounged some large diameter pvc pipe from a construction site, slide it over an old electric kettle, and let it boil with a towel over the top with a small opening to let the steam out and hang the word in it.
When it is anchored by the rope at the base, then it will be held in place by the string tension over the fixed bridge and up toward the tuning pegs. Good luck with your build! 🔥🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥
How important is it, where to place exactly the bar(10:14)? I don't think is possible to glue it random place. If you do it for example on the guitar , if will be in tune if you try from 1-12 fret, here can seems to be good, but from 12th fret and far will not be in tune. How will it be here? Where to place it toward the strings and their length? (from tuning pegs to fixed bridge - and the bar between). I ask because I would like to build my own and I can't find information about it. Thank you!
it is a fretless string, so you measure from (on this instrument) the tuning pegs. if you want it to have the (common) DAE tuning (A one fourth below the D). ill go with D3, so D string of a cello. the vibrating length is 69cm. in fact, you could pop an actually cello string on if you wanted. i hope that helps, and makes sense
These are absolutely beautiful pieces of art! I really appreciate the time, effort, and craftsmanship you both have put into these instruments! How much would one of these cost if you were to sell them?
Thank you very much! We currently are not selling instruments, so we are unable to answer your question! However that may change in the future! If you are interested in updates about our projects and music, please subscribe to our email newsletter on www.volfgangtwins.com
Wow, this is absolutely amazing!! I am starting my first tagelharpa build in a few days!! Crazy fantastic music too. How many hairs for each string and how many twists did you use ? New supporter!! 🤘🤘🤘
Thank you and good luck with your build! High string 25 hairs. Mid string 35 hairs. Bass string 50 hairs. Twist them until they are taught, but don’t overtwist. You will feel when all the hairs become one string. Remember to twist them all consistently in one direction. It doesn’t matter which direction, as long as they are all wound the same way. If you have any other questions feel free to ask! We are happy to share what we know! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Thank you!
it is a fretless string, so you measure from (on this instrument) the tuning pegs. if you want it to have the (common) DAE tuning (A one fourth below the D). ill go with D3, so D string of a cello. the vibrating length is 69cm. in fact, you could pop an actually cello string on if you wanted. i hope that helps, and makes sense
craftsmanship, great !!
Thanks 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@volfgangtwins Thank you so much!! I have asked many builder about their sting set up and it seems that no one wants to share that info. Also, making yours amplified, even cooler!!! So many possibilities with sounds!!
Cool guys! Awesome watching the creative process 👍👏👏👏

A most fascinating video, thank you!
Excellent video! I love and appreciate "functional art" as I am a professional builder of reproduction flintlock firearms. A weapon, musical instrument, or piece of furniture should be a part of the artists soul and show beauty, creativity and function. Well done, can't wait to see more of your project videos
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our video, we will have more project videos coming in the near future. We’ve enjoyed shooting Flintlocks in the past! Very impressive to build them from scratch.🤘🏻🤘🏻Some of the best craftsmanship tricks we’ve learned were taught to us by gunsmiths, skilled workers of wood and metal. SKÅL! 👊🏻👊🏻🐺🐺
This is amazing thank you for showing us this
Thank you! Be sure to catch our new video premiere today to watch us build giant rawhide drums! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

It has to be said that then music is outstanding & I love a man that's good with his hands, I love to make lot's of different things myself, I'm particularly good at cross stitch & making my own patterns, I even made a pattern for Valknut that glows in the dark, the guy that wanted it liked it so much that he's commissioned me to make two more, Vegvisir & Mjölnir that also glow in the dark 🤭
Very cool! 🔥👊🏻👊🏻🔥 Thanks for waching!

That's 🥰 by the way you were randomly recommended to me by UA-cam, I instantly subscribed 🏴😎👍
Amazing 😍 Could you tell me where to find those metal "things" (I don't know how they're called, maybe string holder?) at 9:06?
Thank you! These are called “violin fine tuners” used for violins. Wittner makes good ones 👍👍 Glad you enjoyed our video and good luck on building yours! 🔥👊🏻👊🏻🔥
@@volfgangtwins thanks! ❤

Hello, do you produce these instruments for sale?
Hello! At this point in time we are not selling any tagelharpas. Perhaps in the future we may do so! ⚔️👊🏻👊🏻⚔️
Please do guys, its blows away anything I seen elsewhere they claim to be a original...
Wish I had money and time to do this type of work it's awesome what they do! It's great to be afforded those rights that's for sure.
Thanks so much! If you want to make one go for it! There is always time for your passions! 🔥👊🏻👊🏻🔥
You Brothers ever think of asking the harp twins out be a good match
Can I ask how many horse-hair strands did you use for the strings? Its really hard to find any information on the internet.
Sure, 50 strands for the bass string, 35 for the center string and 25 for the high string, however you can experiment with different thicknesses and see what works best for you🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@volfgangtwins Thank you so much!
I was looking for inspiration and I found you, I will also build my Tagelharpa, thank you for your music and creation videos. SKÅL

could you make a tool like they were made in viking times?
Do you mean make it with Viking era tools? Sure that could be done 🤘🏻🤘🏻

What was the power tool used to make the sound box?
That was a hand held router 🤘🏻🤘🏻Makes plunge cuts easy, especially when you have the right bit!
