Simon often talks about how amazed he is at the way that logic can be built into puzzles but this one really is next level. Some of the deductions that Phistomefel creates here using only a simple rule and the shape of the killer cages beggars belief.
I got the "x" figured out very quickly. I used the same 180 - R6C6, but instead of all the trial and error, I factored the possible totals of 171-179. In those numbers there were only 2 possible factors in the 10-17 range, and they were both in 176=11x16. That set the 4 and the quick elimination of 16 resolved x. Took me a couple of minutes. From there I got it about 80% done and ran into an error. Didn't have the energy to back up and find my mistake, so I came back to watch the video. It was only the beginning that I got easily. This is another great puzzle, thanks!

1:23:51 I figured out the 1 in box 5 pretty early in my solve, but then completely forgot how I did it when checking my work, undid it, and wasted time figuring it out much later in my solve.
I have no idea why this was in my suggested, and I still have no clue how you got that x factor to be equal to 11, but I am ridiculously impressed right now! you made everything seem so simple by always seeming nonplussed by the puzzle. Very cool content, subscription-worthy channel for sure.

That was impressive Simon. It is a pure joy to follow your logical deduction of the puzzles. Have done almost all of the puzzles, and they are great fun. Keep up the good work :)
I managed to finish solving the puzzle by listening into the video for a couple of tricks. But now that I have a completed sudoku, I STILL don't understand how it's solvable... mindblown!
Ooh, the new app sounds exciting! I'm still not great at most of the other ones, lol, but I'll try it. Also, your videos are one of the highlights of my day.

Another amazing puzzle and solve. Great news about the apps too. Keep solving both, the comments every day show that this channel gives so much enjoyment to so many people. 👍
I'm proper proud of solving this one. It took me ages and lots of notes (mostly to find x), but I got there in the end. Thanks for introducing me to it!
I saw all of Simon's logic except one short cut, just slooooweeer. When I finished my solve I exhaled one long expletive in satisfaction. Love Phistomefel.
I solved this one! Took me several sittings but I remained unspoiled. The 2 you place in box 3 at around 25 minutes was my big breakthrough that moved me forward after 20 min of nothing at around the same amount filled in. However, afterwards I just added up row 4 and r5c6 to determine that r5c6 was a 1, r6c7 was a 6, and that helped me avoid some of the suffer you had (and pushed through at a blistering pace) for the next 15 minutes.
What a beautiful incorporation of arithmetic into unlocking the restrictions at the start. I guess you could say having to find the two digit number gave this puzzle that X factor
I don't think I could've solved this by myself, even though I love sudoku, but I'm proud that I was able to follow the logic as I watched you solve it. Cheers!
What a brilliant puzzle! I love it! I stumbled a bit but eventually I could do it without any help from the video. It is fascinating how this can lead to a unique solution. My solution path was different than yours. It depends on where you look first. My first step was almost the same: I looked for a number between 10 and 15 that has a number between 171 and 179 as multiple and found only 11 times 16 is 176. Then I knew x is 11 and I could place the first digit: 4. Then I could place the 9 and the 8. But after that my focus went in a different direction.
This puzzle gave me huge Kakuro vibes! For those who don't know Kakuro is similar to Suduko, but you have to find the sums on numbers going across vertically and horizontally. Only difference from this is you are given the numbers to find the sum of or "x". It's a really fun game and makes you think!
Messed up my first try. Put in digits that added to 10 instead of 11 in one of the cages. I think I pressed the wrong key by mistake. Wasted a couple hours there. Took 1h15m on my second try. I figured out the 11 right away. Once you see the four boxes has one cell missing. Just divide 180 by all the numbers from 10 to 17. You'll see that only two numbers will give you a remainder higher than 0 and lower than 10 so that you can put that digit in the corner. Those numbers are 11 and 16. And it's trivial to rule out 16. I liked this one. Lots of good logic to be had.
@@monnamonsta Tut Tut Tut. This is a stress free puzzle zone 😀 I'm now thinking we also need a killer cage for the one empty cell, giving us its total. Just for those not yet familiar with Magic Squares, and who perhaps doubt their scanning skills.
Good lord this puzzle beat me up so bad. I broke it so many times that without the luxury of checking the video for wrong entries I'd probably still be at it next week. I did find the correct path to the solution, but only after being absolutely stuck for about an hour and then making a false deduction (or was it two?) that ran me into contradictions twice. Only after clearing out the nonsense and going to the correct path first (for me, the 1 in the bottom row) did the puzzle yield. Absolutely fantastic, but it killed me. Edit: Can't believe how fast Simon hits on the mathematical logic in the start. I faffed around confusing myself with various misleading options for probably 40 minutes before I finally hit on looking at the remainder of 180 divided by 10, 11, 12 ... etc.
That was a good challenge. I got the value of x on my own, with very similar logic, and got to the point where I had about a dozen cells filled. Then my sudoku skills just couldn't keep up the pace, so I came back to watch Simon finish it up. Nice puzzle!
I have this open in one tab and I switched to another and for some reason my brain read the title as "This Sudoku Has No Rights" and honestly I think that's pretty valid of me.
Really excited for the Killer Sudoku app. I commented on Mark's video that Sandwich Sudoku is by far my favorite variant. Killers on the other hand... probably my worst. Hoping the app can help me adjust my mind to the logic and geometry that I often miss.
As soon as Simon filled in the 7 at R8C4, I was staring at the 3 at R8C5 for what felt like minutes, and when he did fill it in, I was shouting at my screen about the 3/8 pair at R9C6/R9C7 while he takes the absolutely longest path around the world to disambiguate them.

I figured out the 1 in box 5 pretty early in my solve, but then completely forgot how I did it when checking my work, undid it, and wasted time figuring it out much later in my solve.
Oof rip
I have no idea why this was in my suggested, and I still have no clue how you got that x factor to be equal to 11, but I am ridiculously impressed right now! you made everything seem so simple by always seeming nonplussed by the puzzle. Very cool content, subscription-worthy channel for sure.
29:55 Phistomephel setting the puzzle: NICE
I am always exceptionally pleased when I get within 2x of Simon or Mark's completion time ... this one was especially pleasing !! Great puzzle
I love watching him get so excited when he's figured it out even though I have no idea how he did it. I feel like a proud mother, cheering him on from the side-lines.
That was impressive Simon. It is a pure joy to follow your logical deduction of the puzzles. Have done almost all of the puzzles, and they are great fun. Keep up the good work :)
This is an amazing video. The amount of intuitive sudoku and quick maths you made in this video astounds me.
This guy randomly came on my feed, and every day there's a new video with less numbers.
43:12 'We have to resort to sudoku' I too have dishonered my family name, allow me to commit sudoku master.
Nice. A very specific audience for that joke.
That was amazing. I never thought that would solve. Big shout out man. For years I have been searching for a hobby, because of your channel I found my love for sudoku and puzzles.
Dang. Quarantine really got me watching sudoku
Took me almost 3 hours, the hardest and most interesting sudoku I've ever seen. Now it's sunrise and I haven't slept yet, GG :)
The logic at 20:40 was exquisite, I could never have spotted that myself.
Watching you problem solve is actually such a delight.
A Miracle Sudoku app? Does this mean Mark and Simon are now saints?
Always have been
@@dino130395 I was going to say the same thing lol
Saints are creators of those :D
What a beautiful incorporation of arithmetic into unlocking the restrictions at the start. I guess you could say having to find the two digit number gave this puzzle that X factor
I don't think I could've solved this by myself, even though I love sudoku, but I'm proud that I was able to follow the logic as I watched you solve it. Cheers!
Love watching your videos! I can't dream of being able to solve any of the sudoku puzzles you try but it's extremely fun to watch the logic unfold
Me getting one number before him:
Smart😎
What a brilliant puzzle! I love it! I stumbled a bit but eventually I could do it without any help from the video. It is fascinating how this can lead to a unique solution. My solution path was different than yours. It depends on where you look first. My first step was almost the same: I looked for a number between 10 and 15 that has a number between 171 and 179 as multiple and found only 11 times 16 is 176. Then I knew x is 11 and I could place the first digit: 4. Then I could place the 9 and the 8. But after that my focus went in a different direction.
Phenomenal work! I enjoy watching you work out these solutions. You make it look easy.
Always a pleasure watching Simon solving with amazing logic.
This can be blue. It makes me feel better.
I feel like I should go home after this... except I am already home. Too much logic haha! Well done pal, incredible as always!
Next Suduko: Given digits: 80
Missing digits: 1
Have fun solving this.
Perhaps make it a Magic Square puzzle, with the missing digit the centre of the Magic Square?
Sudoku*
But the given digits are all messed up, have fun placing all of them back again
@@monnamonsta Tut Tut Tut. This is a stress free puzzle zone 😀
I'm now thinking we also need a killer cage for the one empty cell, giving us its total. Just for those not yet familiar with Magic Squares, and who perhaps doubt their scanning skills.
@@RichSmith77 Lol nice idea
Wow, very hyped about that miracle sudoku app... sounds great, exactly what I was hoping to have
Good lord this puzzle beat me up so bad.
I faffed around confusing myself with various misleading options for probably 40 minutes before I finally hit on looking at the remainder of 180 divided by 10, 11, 12 ... etc.
New app?! Going to be refreshing the play store until then!
This man solves the entire sudoku in the time it takes me to understand the rules
That was a good challenge. I got the value of x on my own, with very similar logic, and got to the point where I had about a dozen cells filled. Then my sudoku skills just couldn't keep up the pace, so I came back to watch Simon finish it up. Nice puzzle!
Thank you again for a fun video I only ever follow about half of your logic but you've been so much fun to watch during this lockdown.
I'll download the app as soon as it comes out!!
I have this open in one tab and I switched to another and for some reason my brain read the title as "This Sudoku Has No Rights" and honestly I think that's pretty valid of me.
😂
Sitting here at 7am watching this and idk why but it was very interesting and amazing how you sloved it! Keep up the vids I enjoy them!
Super proud of my
A wonderful and ingenious puzzle. Thanks for sharing it's truly a treat.
Really excited for the Killer Sudoku app. I commented on Mark's video that Sandwich Sudoku is by far my favorite variant. Killers on the other hand... probably my worst. Hoping the app can help me adjust my mind to the logic and geometry that I often miss.
Ive literally never done a sudoku puzzle but for some reason its really interesting and calming to watch
