Yuup I surfed baja and mainland mexico since 1970.had a few incidents that raised the hair on our necks, back in the day.still kept going south.times have changed drastically with the huge explosion of criminality. Very sad actually, the Mexican people are so kind and regular folks, many friends in colima, michocan, oxxca, ect.now the places I used take my family to are not safe enough anymore.i have family in durango, and do visit them as it's safer to fly out of tj,straight to durango.that being said the days of being able to drive thru baja and mainland, are over for me.incredibly sad.
surfed Baja in the early 70's with some shipmates when I was stationed in San Diego. the sketchiest people we ran into were the scruffy hippies we encountered
Back then it was a gold mine for cheap affordable surf trips, deserted waves, cheap delicious street food, and by and large totally safe…. Still pretty safe, but stuff does happen nowadays unfortunately
Try driving through South Central LA after dark… makes Mexico seem like Disneyland! I drive to Scorpion Bay every summer for a six week surf and fish. I’ve had a couple of minor issues ( pay off a couple Feds, a military guy at the border, grease a few palms here and there over the years ) but nothing I couldn’t handle. My advice, learn Spanish, get a dog! My Boxer ( as sweet as she is ) will not let anyone in the truck or even closer than a foot! She just shows her teeth and we typically just get waved through! My wife and daughter fly into Loreto. Pro tip; Don’t drive at night, and always have a couple C-notes at the ready… sometimes you just have to pay to play 🏄🏼♂️🎣🤙🏻
That’s very fair, I’m totally okay paying to play, just as long as nothing else happens. Scorpion bay is AMAZING, highway 5 is amazing now, doesn’t have a million potholes etc…. I actually prefer driving the 5 instead of highway 1 now for 7 sisters or south. Like the dog idea, we have chihuahuas, no help from them hahahaha
@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop Ha! Ya, chihuahua’s wont do the trick! Maybe invest in a bigger bread… boxers work. The 5 was like Swiss cheese this past summer! Scorpion Bay is incredible! We are totally imbedded in the community there and our Daughter had a great crew of Xpat girls she hangs with. Unfortunately, all the sand has disappeared ( hurricanes etc ) so the waves are nothing like they were 12-15 years ago! It would be foolish not to bring a longboard to at least a good size mid length! Just counting the days… we’ll be down there 7/2-8/22🏄🏼♂️🎣🤙🏻
Just do not drive at night. We did a very, very similar route my first trip to Baja. Also arrived after dark. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Rule #1 is no night driving . Zero
It’s a bummer, Baja is AMAZING…. But I just baseline anxiety whenever I’m down there now. Farther south you go into seven sisters the safer though in my books🙌
We also had a problem at Cuatro Casas back in 1990. There was nothing there, back then. We had a problem coming out to the highway. Fake "federales" stopped us and ransacked my buddy's VW micro bus. Took our alcohol, some tools, and our cash. We asked for $20 so we could get back and they actually gave it to us. Wish we had the alcohol.
Good to see the youngsters getting out. Proper entry-level, run-of-the-mill Baja story; keep going down and your stories will get SIGNIFICANTLY sketchier!
😂😂 very true! One year surfing the wall a guy LOST HIS KEYS in the rocks. Literally spent hours trying to hot wire his car to limp him back over the border. Long story short, drove to town, and some Mexican lock smith slowly hand filed a blank key by hand just with trial and error to fit his truck. Got it started and he took off, never saw him again
Never take anything new to Mexico, NEVER. Especially a new wife and if you haven't taken her out the package you can still return her to the store and get your money back.
What an epic trip! Glad you guys survived to tell the tale 😬
Always take your used wife to baja not a brand new one
they look pretty used
😂 my old wife hahahaha
Words to live by 👍
I know a couple people that have disappeared down there. You’re playing with fire.
@@mrjuse5470 that is scary AF, partying/drinking/drugs or minding their business surfing?

Seriously, NEVER AGAIN
I drove from Florida to Cabo when i was 19 so i know how sketchy it is. So worth it though.

Very legendary travel trip, that’s a couple thousand miles😳👍👍👍

You asked for $20 back so you could pay the toll roads to get back to America and they gave it to you but not the alcohol?!😂😂. That’s an awesome story

Keep spreading the fear mongering clickbait! It makes Baja better for the rest of us.
