My theory on why neo turf masters is so popular is basically the course design. The difficulty of the courses scales really well AND works brilliantly in relation to the play mechanics - its almost like a puzzle game that gradually gets more difficult.
Neo Turf Masters is the kind of game that people will complain about before even giving it a try. If you can convince them to, there's just something...fantastic about it that I can't put my finger on.
I can agree that Neo Turf Masters is the best golf game ever and one of my favorite, if not my favorite sports game ever. The simple controls, awesome music, and some really challenging holes makes this loads of fun.
This game is so wonderful. Sure, I was born in early 90's and I live in a place which didn't have arcades, but I finally got chance to play this, thanks to Humble Store. This just got so many things right. It isn't too realistic or flashy for a golf game, musics are so relaxing and yet there is still challenge. I just grab my arcade controller and have a relaxing 20 minutes with Neo Turf Masters.
This game has the most playtime by far on my raspberry pi. No other golf game is as fun as Neo Turf Masters, imo. They just got everything right with the mechanics and the pixel art holds up so well even today.
Love playing this on the SNK collection for PS2. It's relaxing. I feel the same way about Outrun 2. There's nothing really spectacular about it mechanically, but the presentation puts it up and beyond.
A couple of years ago I built an arcade cabinet. I kept looking up the best arcade games and this one kept coming up. I ended up watching this video and I keep coming back to it. So great. Right now I’m of the opinion that Neo Turf Masters is the greatest arcade game ever. It’s beating Marvel Vs Capcom, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 or anything else me and my friends play. “More exciting than ten games of American football happening at the same time”
Recently got a single slot mvs arcade machine so I got the 161 in 1 cart and I find myself playing this game more than any other game on the cart. It’s surprisingly addictive.
Definitely in my top 5. Just found out that the neocd version has higher quality music and an extra course. Why they didnt include those 2 things with recent re-releases is beyond me.
Yes, I just started collecting MVS games this year and these have all been some of my favorites. I thought I would be playing more fighting games than sports games 😂😂
Man the best golf game i played was Hot Shots 2 on the PSP. I think they also made stuff for PS3 + PS4 but i don't own theses consoles.... Still, very good memories.
Haha, thank you to Kim of 7 years ago. I was playing this tonight and having got my emulator filled, I thought I'd come to your channel to find out what might be good that I don't already know about. Turf Masters is fantastic, loved it since I played it in an arcade at Alton Towers long, long ago. Anyway, thank you as always, you are the best source for retro gaming. Shit I even watch your wrestling videos sometimes, and I'm not a fan of wrestling. I hope you're well and thank you for so many years of great content.
the artistic style of this game always made me wonder what would have happened if any choose to use all the Neogeo's available color ballet to make a game in the vain of mortal kombat or ratio assassins.
In fact, up until a few years ago, the UK's worst nightclub, the Batley Frontier, still had an arcade cabinet of Neo Turf Masters - make of that what you will - but I choose to agree with Kim that this is clearly the best arcade machine of all time ;)
I know Kim recommends it on Steam, but there is an inexpensive PC version with baked in controller support!! I'd recommend that if you don't like downloading ROMs like me.
Neo Turf Masters on AES can be EXPENSIVE! Yet, it can be worth it! Excellent review, Kimble! Will you talk about more Neo-Geo games? It would be awesome if you did!
Awesome game, and a great review! I always loved the presentation too ;) Got the poor mans version on the SNK Arcade Classics for the PS2. Do yourself a favor and buy that.
I love this game's presentation. NTM has been in just about every arcade and bowling alley I've ever been to. Honestly though I never dropped any coin on it. I usually played Football Frenzy or Metal Slug. The only golf game I own is Pebble Beach Golf Links for the Sega Saturn and that's mainly for the cheesy music and FMV clips with Craig 'The Walrus' Stadler.
You're spoiling us with 3 great vids in a very short space of time Kim ;-) You ever considered teaming up and releasing something with Guru Larry? You two seem to be about the most knowledgeable retro gamers on UA-cam, if not the interwebs!
I loved this on the SNK mini (whatever it's called). I couldn't understand why I never heard of it. GREAT REVIEW. This game is like a caricature of what I imagined a classic game to be.
In the US at least, you mostly found golf games in places like bars and bowling alleys, venues where the patrons were at least a bit older than your average arcade customer and usually too inebriated to play anything that required serious reaction time. But that doesn't mean they couldn't be fun experiences. I remember being quite enamored with Golden Tee back in 2001 when I worked in a bowling alley. It replaced the power meter with a trackball that you had to spin as fast and as straight as possible to make good shots. You could do a number of interesting tricks by spinning the ball in different directions at different speeds. I'm going to have to give Neo Turf Masters a shot though as it looks a lot easier to control in MAME.
Thank you for this. Huge fan of NTM here. Own the arcade cart and also have it on switch. Fyi if you have an arcade cab, the carts are relatively inexpensive. Get a one slot jamma neo motherboard, and you could be playing the original for around $150 all in.
I used to love this game in the arcade. I also used to love Taito Power Goal which was in my favourite arcade at Primrose Valley - it even had streakers :) this is how sports games should be made :)
This looks good...but in terms of golf games, I just can't see past PGA Tour Golf 2 on the Megadrive. Sooooooo good, so much fun, the replays, the epic sounding music over the flybys of the hole, that lovely noise when you hit the pin. Awesome stuff. Can't be arsed with real golf, but the PGA games were superb.
Me and my friends back in the late 90s used to play a golf game in the pub. We might not have chosen it at an arcade but with a rollerball it was a great experience! A lot like playing some darts but I sucked at darts. This video's choice of game is pretty cool though, golf goes arcadey! Thanks for the tip...
One of the best, if not the best, arcade-game is Mitchells ”Super pang”. That’s the game that made me discover mame and now, 15 years later I have my own arcade (pinball, airhockey, fruit machines... you name it) down in my basement.
I yet have to take my time and get familiar with the game (I got it for PSP). But even though I haven't played it much, I absolutely love it already! Why? Because that fusion jazz and the artwork is damn sweet! SNK really had some aesthetics on his hand. ♥
I’ve always been curious-why is this game so expensive? There’s currently an auction for it on eBay with 4 days left, and it’s already at $38,000 dollars 💀 did this have super low print numbers or something?
made by the brilliant minds at Nazca Corp. the gaming demigods behind the masterpieces known as the Metal Slug series and Gunforce 2: Geo-Storm; so you know this HAS to be high-quality stuff right here regardless of its genre! still, my personal fave arcade game of all time is a quite obscure gem by the name of Osman CannonDancer, developed by Mitchell Corp. published in the West by Atlus and created by Koichi "Isuke" Yosoi, the game designer for the arcade's Strider! you should DEFINITELY check it out, whether you're a Strider fan or just a fan of high-octane action!
Never saw this one in the arcades, unfortunately. Every time an arcade had a golf game, it was always Golden Tee or whatever that one with the live action golf players was. Edit: I tell a lie. I actually saw NTM once in an arcade machine with multiple Neo Geo games in it. However, that was in a laundromat about 4 years ago AKA WAAAAY after the arcade scene died down. I'm pretty sure I ended up playing The King of Fighters '98 instead.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thought Neo Turf Masters is the best golf game ever Me and a friend competing in this game is still the most intense head to head play we've ever had in an arcade
It's a good game but my favorites real bout fatal fury special or street hoops, your entitled to your choice and I respect your choice and neo turf is a fantastic game
You know what? These graphics are gorgeous, maybe the best graphics ever! But well, I have a hard time bringing myself to be excited about a Golf game >w>
Best arcade game? Maybe. Best golf game? VERY close if not the best. edit: watch some pro mlg videos for this game, theres insain tricks like changing the balls direction AFTER hitting it
It's funny...golf to me has always been horrendously boring. I can kinda understand someone playing it but why anyone would watch it on tv has always eluded me...and yet there is something about the video games that is slowly growing on me. I recently played Mario golf on the n64 and there really was something quite great about it. I'll have to check this one out too, it's always nice to add another decent Rom to mame :) thanks as always Kim! :D
As this is an arcade game, the "rest" term means how many holes of play you have left on your current credit. You can earn more holes by scoring under the par score for the hole you're on. Conversely, scoring over par shortens your playtime. Obviously if you're using an emulator or ported version the point's moot as you have infinite credits.
Nice video Mr. Justice. I posted this on, The Official NEO-GEO Thread" on Atariage.com for you. Your video is on page 77, post #1918. atariage.com/forums/topic/223548-the-official-neo-geo-thread/page-77 Thank you for sharing this.... Jolly nice of you as always!

And the iconic sounds, the beautiful landscape and vibrant colors. It's just very pleasing on the eyes
Neo Turf Masters is the kind of game that people will complain about before even giving it a try. If you can convince them to, there's just something...fantastic about it that I can't put my finger on.

I'VE BEEN TELLING PEOPLE THIS FOR YEARS, BUT TODAY IS THEY DAY THEY BELIEVE ME.
Snatcher is a great game too , i loved
@@anthonygarcia6073 Talk about random... the hell you talking about Snatcher right now of all things?
On the greeeeeeen

So many gaming youtube videos are about being pissed off and hating stuff. I really enjoy listening to you talk about how rad something is.
This game has the most playtime by far on my raspberry pi. No other golf game is as fun as Neo Turf Masters, imo. They just got everything right with the mechanics and the pixel art holds up so well even today.
"raspberry pi" ...Gawd, that is so cringe. What even is that? A smartphone or a touchscreen tablet?
Literally got this on my Switch a few days ago. I absolutely love it. Really fun local co-op too.
Best golf game EVER. I just started playing on my new Neo Geo MSVX recently. I still haven't mastered it, but man am I addicted!!!
Love playing this on the SNK collection for PS2. It's relaxing.
I feel the same way about Outrun 2. There's nothing really spectacular about it mechanically, but the presentation puts it up and beyond.
It's also one of those games that's regularly on the Neo Geo collections released basically everywhere from the ps2 onwards.
great game to play in a pub while waiting on your dad drinking his pint.

one of my faves on the neo, along windjammers, street hoop and sidekicks 2
Love them all also
You have amazing tastes my friend, all of those games are just amazing!
@@chadmolitor6691 yes amazing games, i have them all for the MVS and still love to play all of them!

This is THE bes game for the Neo Geo bar none! Never really been into Golf games before but holy hell does this one deliver!
So many great games on the Neo•Geo.
The Neo Geo Pocket version is also great.
Bought this for my Switch a few weeks ago. The best £6 i have spent on it.

With NTM it's on the gween !!! I have it for my neo-geo mvs, relaxing game to play.
My birthday present last year was this and I loved it!
Gorgeous game, I need to play this one day.
I bought it for my phone last week. 4€, android playstore. Worth every cent.

Cool thanks I had no idea it was on android.

This game is good. When you start, you can't stop playing.
Unless you get to cave in your opponent's skull with the golf club I'm going to say "no".
Clearly, the greatest arcade game ever is Wrestlefest.
NTM on Neo Geo CD had a 5th course. Scotland! Worth revisiting Kim?
Super hard
"spoiling a good walk" ... Lock stock :) I never miss your Alan Partridge references either Kim. You are awesome!

Yes, the best arcade game ever. - 21 Australia power player from Brazil, Fernando Almeida, level 4,1 coin
If only we could have a kim justice vid everyday ,great review
IREM Skins Game on the SNES is probably the closest thing to a precursor to this.
I yet have to take my time and get familiar with the game (I got it for PSP). But even though I haven't played it much, I absolutely love it already! Why? Because that fusion jazz and the artwork is damn sweet! SNK really had some aesthetics on his hand. ♥
Has to be between this on the Neo geo and pebble beach on the Saturn for best golf game ever. Played them both for 20 years now!

The answer is yes it is the best game ever
It's a good game but my favorites real bout fatal fury special or street hoops, your entitled to your choice and I respect your choice and neo turf is a fantastic game
I am lucky enough to own this, but in all honesty Street Fighter II is my favorite arcade game.
I discovered this game because of "Simpsons Golf but it's neo turf masters" video on youtube
You know what? These graphics are gorgeous, maybe the best graphics ever! But well, I have a hard time bringing myself to be excited about a Golf game >w>
Before starting the video, I'd like to say yes it is
Definitely my favorite golf game.
Pork chop!
What about the impossibly popular Golden Tee?
Definite contender. It's the bar arcade drunken golf cabinet.
Best arcade game? Maybe. Best golf game? VERY close if not the best.
edit: watch some pro mlg videos for this game, theres insain tricks like changing the balls direction AFTER hitting it
LOL are you serious? That's not a trick... it's a basic game mechanic and not hard at all.
4:14 I love that reference.
Shame the end of that game is so sad.
hey kim, your my favorite youtuber,
I think a lot of the golf arcade games made their way to sports bars. Eventually Golden Tee and the deer hunting game dominated that market.
Yes
I gonna Buy on the Swicht
great stuff..on the MVS its only 30 quid btw ;) there's nothing like the real thing!
It's funny...golf to me has always been horrendously boring. On par with Nes Open tournament golf for me.
are golden tee games not big in the uk?
Yes it is!
6:04 The characters all look like the same guy in a variety of disguises.
i don't know like this has to be something really special to be better than Golden Tee Golf......you can't beat Golden Tee Golf...
Why are the Neo Geo CD prices for this so stupid?
sounding like a btec guru larry
