Countering Grips & Considering Arms When Passing Guard by Master Pedro Sauer

  • When someone has you in your guard, you need to think about passing the legs.
    Sometimes however we forget about the arms being a part of the picture too.
    The arms can grip, and frame, and cause you problems.
    So how can we use them to our advantage?
    If they grip, you grip back, and take the arm away from them. That way you have taken the arm completely away from the pass, and you are using it to your advantage.
    That's how you have to think about your jiu jitsu: Make the bigger guy weaker, the tall guy shorter, and the great guy less effective - you do this by taking away their weapons, rather than engaging where they are at their best.
