god, larry, you havent even given me a chance to comment on the last video, and now you make this one! 13: Pet Sounds (a really cool song, just my least favorite) 12: That's Not Me (a really good song, but it's not my favorite) 11: Here Today (kind of the same thing as That's Not Me, just a tiny bit better) 10: Sloop John B (great harmonies, which is the main reason i love the song) 09: I Know There's An Answer (i really like how the three vocalists on the song are able to blend their vocals so smoothly) 08: You Still Believe In Me (what a beautiful melody, and the arrangement is superb. i just love everything about this song. the vocals are so lovely, Brian is such a wonderful singer) 07: I'm Waiting For The Day (i love the drums on this song, and the lyrics are great. the backing harmonies are great, and i love contrast between the quiet chorus and the louder verses) 06: I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (another superb melody, and the chorus is just amazing, the lyrics are fantastic, i love the theremin at the end, just another great song) 05: Let's Go Away For Awhile (i really like this one, the way it goes quiet, and then jumps to life with the big drums, i love it) 04: Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) (this song is so beautiful. the strings that come in during the second verse are just so fantastic, and Brian's vocals are among the best on the entire album) 03: Caroline, No (fun fact, this song was originally recorded at a slightly lower pitch, but they sped it up very slightly to make Brian sound a bit younger, or something like that. anyway this song is incredible. the drums, the melody, and the vocals are all perfect, and it's got great lyrics) 02: Wouldn't It Be Nice (this song is in my top 5 favorite songs, and it's only number 2. i love everything about this song, even the accordian, or whatever that thing is. i love that quiet intro, and then that massive drum that cuts through. the melody is fantastic, the vocals are superb, and the arrangement is amazing. i love this song so much) 01: God Only Knows (that second verse, is maybe the greatest lyric ever written. i mean wow, this song is just beautiful. the horns, the vocals, the bass, i LOVE this song beyond words. just shy of my top 3 favorite songs of all time. this song and Wouldn't It Be Nice are a big part of why this is one of my very favorite albums)
Through the years, I've been getting more into Pet Sounds. This year alone I've heard it about 30 times. No joke. Indeed, Sloop John B. was recorded in between Pet Sounds sessions, but originally meant as a stand alone single (just like the wonderful "The Little Girl I Once Knew") but, as it hit the #3 spot, was added to the album. The B side was "You're So Good To Me", one of my favourites from the lads. My ranking would be: 1.- I'm Waiting for the Day 2.- Wouldn't it Be Nice 3.- God Only Knows 4.- Caroline, No 5.- You Still Believe in Me 6.- I Just Wasn't Made for These Times 7.- Don't Talk 8.- Let's Go Away for Awhile 9.- That's Not Me 10.- Pet Sounds 11.- Sloop John B 12.- I Know There's an Answer 13.- Here Today
Sloop John B was put on Pet Sounds at the insistance of Capitol Records who thought there was not a single on the album. Capitol thought so little about Pet Sounds that they released the first "Beach Boys Greatest Hits" album while Pet Sounds was trying to climb the charts. This is probably part of the reson why the album under-performed on the charts...divided focus = divided sales.
I love this album. But honestly, it doesn't matter if I do or not. Pet Sounds has reached a state where it is absolutely untouchable. 13. Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) 12. Looks like Jinx is a huge Beach Boys fan...definitely a top 50 album of all time. The amount of influence it has had on other musicians cannot be overlooked.
A very, very tough set of songs to rank!! Yes, I agree that “God Only Knows” could only be #1. I would have ranked “I’m Waiting For The Day” much higher. It’s one of the Pet Sounds songs I really love. The drum intro really sets the song for me. “ You Still Believe In Me” is amazing and so is “That’s Not Me.”
I can't rank them, they're all masterpieces, but I agree with putting the instrumentals at the lowest rank, not because I don't like them, actually I really like both, but because I enjoy the ones with lyrics more.
I love this album. I agree with your top 3. Here today would be a little higher on my list but your list is great! I would recommend checking out the movie Love and Mercy. It shows the making of pet sounds and in general is a great and underrated movie.
Nice list Larry, I'm only a small Beach Boys fan so I haven't heard all of the songs so I can't really give you a list. Can you maybe do Please Please Me next? Thank you.
God Only Knows definitely the best song on Pet Sounds. Caroline No would come second for me, and Wouldn't It Be Nice substantially down the list. Thanks!
Good one, Larry. I must be one of the only huge Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fans who isn't taken with Pet Sounds. I could say that more musos appreciate the album, but I'm one of those and it still doesn't move me. That said: 1. God Only Knows 2. Wouldn't It Be Nice 3. the rest
13. Pet Sounds 12. That's Not Me 11. Let's Go Away For A While 10. Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) 9. I Know There's An Answer 8. Caroline No 7. I'm Waiting For the Day 6. Here Today 5. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times 4. Sloop John B 3. Wouldn't It Be Nice 2. God Only Knows 1. You Still Believe in Me Paul Mccartney once said that nobody is educated musically until they've heard "Pet Sounds". I completely agree. So many instruments, such great writing, astounding production. This may be a controversial opinion, but I think this blows Sgt. Pepper out of the water. Both are mind blowingly amazing, but I feel Pet Sounds holds up a little better in my opinion.
Good album review 13. Pet Sounds 12. Let's Go Away 11. Don't Talk 10. Here Today 09. You Still Believe In Me 08. I Know There's An Answer 07. I'm Waiting For The Day 06. Caroline No 05. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times 04. Sloop John B 03. Tha's Not Me 02. God Only Knows 01. Wouldn't it Be Nice
class album if you get the chance watch the making of pet sounds and the accapella version of the album on the pet sounds sessions box set is brian wilson heaven paul mccartneys favourite album aswell
Kind of figures the instrumentals would be at the bottom of the list but Id take Lets Go Away for a While over the Title track.I d put Here Today and I just wasn't made for these times up higher and That's Not Me and Im waiting for the day down lower.Sloop John B was not intended for inclusion and was dictated by Capitol much to Brian's chagrin but it does work well with the rest of the material although not one of my faves by them
A very good and innovative album of course, but not really my cup of tea. Too melancholic and that annoying high pitched back vocal "harmonizing" that some fans think of being so charming and cute (the last minute of You Still Believe In Me for example, pff) .... I can only play this album while doing other things, don't think I ever managed to listen it out completely in one take. I prefer almost all other great pop/rock albums that came out about the same time by Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Dylan and a bit later Doors, Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix. Much more fun, thrills and kicks to be found there. God Only Knows, Sloop John B and Wouldn't it be Nice were the only tracks I copied to a compilation audio tape early eighties , and together with I Know There's An Answer and I'm Waiting For The Day those are still the only ones I can't do without. Don't Talk Put Your Head On My Shoulder is a great track, but it makes me feel like a hundred years old. So 5 tracks are the best, too bad for the rest.
It's hard to argue especially given both their early output (61-65) and their two masterpieces one finished ("Pet Sounds") and one left unfinished ("SMiLE"). The two British Invasion giants, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones had greater influence on where music was going forward but the fact that The Beach Boys had the respect of both of those bands says a lot for them as well. I was not surprised at all to read that Brian Wilson in his new autobiography referenced that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were his two favorite bands. Probably a bit of a mutual admiration society going on there. "Pet Sounds" is amazing!
pet smoke you still police me I'm so jaded in these times Hell if I Know ( first top 40 song to use 'hell' in the title) C'est La Vie, gone tomorrow wouldn't it be tight? why Carolina why?
I think Pet Sounds is one of the most, if not the most overrated albums of all time. I find it incredibly boring. I don't have a problem with people liking it, but when Rolling Stones says it's the 2nd best album of all time, that pisses me off. I think Surf's Up is a million times better than it.
I understand where you're coming from (I believe The Velvet Underground & Nico is quite overrated), but one aspect that most people don't factor in when wondering why certain albums are so acclaimed is how innovative the particular album was when it was released. No one had heard sounds like they heard on Pet Sounds when it was released and no one had heard lyrics so explicit that were on TVU&N before it was released.
I bought this album 2nd hand based on some of the hype, and while I like all of the usual songs "wouldn't it...", "God only knows" and "Sloop John B", I kept waiting as I listened for all the sparks to fly but in the end I felt overall yes its overrated. It's kind of a mess in parts and could have used a bit more variety in the songs (some more simple, some more rocky). But, I really like "Put your head on my shoulder" - its my favourite.
Austin7298 That explains why people hold it in high acclaim, yes, but the songs, to me, don't really hold up. I think the production's boring and every song sounds like what would be filler on Rubber Soul. And what really pisses me off is when people hold this in higher regard than Revolver, because all the songs on Revolver are way better, the productions better, they were doing more interesting things and it's just seems like a much more influential album, to me. And I know they recorded Revolver during/after they heard Pet Sounds, but really, what matters; how good it was then, or how good it is now?
Definitely not overrated. The album brought a new level of symphonic and highly complex arrangements to rock. The music is ingenious, with melodic bass lines, instruments playing in different keys, and unbelievable vocals. The use of instrumentation is progressive and avant-garde, with accordions and theremins. Brian Wilson was an unquestionable genius. Writing and producing all these songs with a distinctive, delicious, Wall-of-Sound mood.
Michael Sieger So you're telling me it's better than Revolver and all these other much better sounding records? I would argue that good instrumentation doesn't necessarily make for good music. Prog rock and metal are very hit or miss, to me, and they're usually the most musically complex in rock. I couldn't really hear most of the instruments and whatnot on the album, because the production is so empty, and what I could hear just sounded muddy. Y'know, now that you say that thing about melodic bass lines and whatnot, I've actually just had a bit of a revelation. There's too much shit going on for me to enjoy it. They tried to fit so much shit onto one album that nothing really stands out, and thus becomes somewhat incoherent, to me. On some albums, that works, like Sgt. Pepper but on this one it sounds, frankly, horrible. I think this album would've benefited from more George Martin-esque production to bring all the sounds out. Also, not a major complaint, but I just fucking hate The Beach Boys voices. I don't know why it bothers me on this, but not Surf's Up (probably because Surf's Up is actually well produced), but they just do not gel to me on this album. So yeah, this album sucks and I'm probably not going to think it doesn't suck for a while. I know I started off being sort of 'it's just overrated', but I really do genuinely think it's a bad album. Holding this album over so many much better albums is just musical blasphemy, to me. Btw, the "it influenced a lot of artists" argument is not a good one. People get influenced by all music they hear, be it not doing something because they don't like how it sounds on one record, or the contrary. And regardless, if someone's doing something because they heard it on a record, and improving on it, that's good! Just because I don't like the way something's done on one album doesn't mean I can't like it in a different environment. So don't even bother with that argument.
Pet Sounds only has three good songs on it (the singles). The rest are filler pieces of garbage, but if Good Vibrations was on there it would be a whole different ball game.

"Sloop John B" was recorded during the early sessions for Pet Sounds and although it has the same quality of production, I personally don't think it fits on the album. It's an interruption to the concept. As a standalone single, it's one of The Beach Boys' absolute best.
I think "Sloop John B" does fit the concept when one views the song metaphorically - as being about alienation, and longing for comfort and security..
I think it's a crime to put I'm Waiting For The Day that low.
Why does everyone hate on Let's Go Away For Awhile? It's one of the best instrumentals I've ever heard!

Sloop John B was actually an earlier song by the Kingston Trio. Not sure if you would consider it a cover. Brian made it a completely different track.

10: Sloop John B (great harmonies, which is the main reason i love the song)
09: I Know There's An Answer (i really like how the three vocalists on the song are able to blend their vocals so smoothly)
08: You Still Believe In Me (what a beautiful melody, and the arrangement is superb. i just love everything about this song. the vocals are so lovely, Brian is such a wonderful singer)
07: I'm Waiting For The Day (i love the drums on this song, and the lyrics are great. the backing harmonies are great, and i love contrast between the quiet chorus and the louder verses)
06: I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (another superb melody, and the chorus is just amazing, the lyrics are fantastic, i love the theremin at the end, just another great song)
05: Let's Go Away For Awhile (i really like this one, the way it goes quiet, and then jumps to life with the big drums, i love it)
04: Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) (this song is so beautiful. the strings that come in during the second verse are just so fantastic, and Brian's vocals are among the best on the entire album)
03: Caroline, No (fun fact, this song was originally recorded at a slightly lower pitch, but they sped it up very slightly to make Brian sound a bit younger, or something like that. anyway this song is incredible. the drums, the melody, and the vocals are all perfect, and it's got great lyrics)
02: Wouldn't It Be Nice (this song is in my top 5 favorite songs, and it's only number 2. i love everything about this song, even the accordian, or whatever that thing is. i love that quiet intro, and then that massive drum that cuts through. the melody is fantastic, the vocals are superb, and the arrangement is amazing. i love this song so much)
01: God Only Knows (that second verse, is maybe the greatest lyric ever written. i mean wow, this song is just beautiful. the horns, the vocals, the bass, i LOVE this song beyond words. just shy of my top 3 favorite songs of all time. this song and Wouldn't It Be Nice are a big part of why this is one of my very favorite albums)
Pet Sounds, the title track, next to last? That song runs a chill down my spine every time I hear it!
My ranking would be:
1.- I'm Waiting for the Day
2.- Wouldn't it Be Nice
3.- God Only Knows
4.- Caroline, No
5.- You Still Believe in Me
6.- I Just Wasn't Made for These Times
7.- Don't Talk
8.- Let's Go Away for Awhile
9.- That's Not Me
10.- Pet Sounds
11.- Sloop John B
12.- I Know There's an Answer
13.- Here Today
Sloop John B was put on Pet Sounds at the insistance of Capitol Records who thought there was not a single on the album. Capitol thought so little about Pet Sounds that they released the first "Beach Boys Greatest Hits" album while Pet Sounds was trying to climb the charts. This is probably part of the reson why the album under-performed on the charts...divided focus = divided sales.
I love this album. But honestly, it doesn't matter if I do or not. Pet Sounds has reached a state where it is absolutely untouchable.

Thoughts?
Looks like Jinx is a huge Beach Boys fan...definitely a top 50 album of all time. The amount of influence it has had on other musicians cannot be overlooked.
A very, very tough set of songs to rank!! Yes, I agree that “God Only Knows” could only be #1. I would have ranked “I’m Waiting For The Day” much higher. It’s one of the Pet Sounds songs I really love. The drum intro really sets the song for me. “ You Still Believe In Me” is amazing and so is “That’s Not Me.”
I can't rank them, they're all masterpieces, but I agree with putting the instrumentals at the lowest rank, not because I don't like them, actually I really like both, but because I enjoy the ones with lyrics more.
thanks for reviewing this album as I am one of the few who asked for you to review it
I love this album.
Thank you.
Nice review Larry, and love your haircut!! Looking handsome!!
That said:
1. God Only Knows
2. Wouldn't It Be Nice
3. the rest
13. Pet Sounds
12. That's Not Me
11. Let's Go Away For A While

2. God Only Knows
1. You Still Believe in Me
Paul Mccartney once said that nobody is educated musically until they've heard "Pet Sounds". I completely agree. So many instruments, such great writing, astounding production. This may be a controversial opinion, but I think this blows Sgt. Pepper out of the water. Both are mind blowingly amazing, but I feel Pet Sounds holds up a little better in my opinion.
Good album review

Have you done Pink Floyd the wall ranking worst to best yet? If not could you
I love your list. Excellent album. It was inspired by Rubber Soul. What a good year 1966 was!
class album if you get the chance watch the making of pet sounds and the accapella version of the album on the pet sounds sessions box set is brian wilson heaven paul mccartneys favourite album aswell
My favorite is I'm Waiting for the Day
I would for you to do some other Beach Boys albums, too.
Kind of figures the instrumentals would be at the bottom of the list but Id take Lets Go Away for a While over the Title track.I d put Here Today and I just wasn't made for these times up higher and That's Not Me and Im waiting for the day down lower.Sloop John B was not intended for inclusion and was dictated by Capitol much to Brian's chagrin but it does work well with the rest of the material although not one of my faves by them
Do Marvin Gaye, What's going on...
Do another Paul McCartney /Wings album ranking .
I don't like the Beach Boys all that much. But this album I like.
rip Mike lol
Rank Lou Reed's Berlin
I've come round to the opinion of late that they are the best American band ever in spite of Mike Love.
"Pet Sounds" is amazing!
pet smoke
you still police me
I'm so jaded in these times
Hell if I Know ( first top 40 song to use 'hell' in the title)
C'est La Vie, gone tomorrow
wouldn't it be tight?
why Carolina why?
every song is amazing, except sloop john b
Not a Beach Boys fan...I don't know how this was considered psychedelia.
I don't think it is considered to be psychedelia - except maybe by people who haven't listened to the album.
I don't care for the Beach Boys.
Pet Sounds only has three good songs on it (the singles). The rest are filler pieces of garbage, but if Good Vibrations was on there it would be a whole different ball game.
Most overrated album all time.
