I absolutely miss and adore that soft heat and faint smell of warm plastic that those lights gave off. Add to it the scent of pine from the cut tree and that right there is the scent of Christmas! 🥰
I loved the 3D molded plastic sleighs and reindeer and other light up molded outdoor Christmas decorations of the 60’s. So much better than the cartoony blowups nowadays days, that look ridiculous when they are deflated during the day.
I loved this! I grew up with the angel on the table with the stars on her dress, my sister had her, but she just passed away. Thank you for sharing this 🎄⛄️🎁🦌🎅❄️
Thanks so much for this video. I've been collecting some of these items for the past 35 years. I learned so much more about my collection. I appreciate all the effort and hard work you put into the display. I get frustrated setting up 10 to 15 of my light- ups, ( tangled cords and burned out bulbs). I can imagine how much work you put into doing hundreds!!. 😅
@@georgejohnson8715 George, do you implement no/low heat LED bulbs in most of your decorations? I use white Tru-Tones in all of mine that take C7 bulbs and it's been great knowing I am a zero risk of damaging them from here on out, especially the older Goodman vacuforms!
@@dwsheffer We did replace every light bulb that was inside a decoration with LEDs and on the '1960s tree, every lite decoration was with an LED. Everything that needed heat to work [twinklers, etc.] still used traditional C-7s.

So much fun, thank you for sharing. My husband is 76 and he has the snowman and the little skater, both with backpacks. Loved learning those could be purchased in Woolworth's for .19. he also has the small plastic Santa standing with the little green disc. Where he used to hold a tree. Was Santa also sold in Woolworth's? Oh to be able to step back in time and see all the treasures in the dime store! Thanks for such fun information.😊
This showed up in my feed on Dec 31, 2024, and I’m so glad it did! I live 2.5 hours away from Lancaster, but I will DEFINITELY make a point to visit in 2025!
Beautiful, rare, and delightful collection! I collect old Christmas light ups and currently have about 80 blow molds in my yard. What I love about these items is that most were made in the USA and are so creatively beautiful! I also love the specialty light up wonder stars, paramount stars and bells, and incredible C6 decorations from the 1920's through 1960's. Beautiful collection and incredible furniture pieces they are displayed on!
Years ago my mother gave me a Santa, large and small trees, wreath and snowman popcorn plastic decorations. Still have them. Love the Braford tree topper bell. Bought a red one on Ebay a few years ago.
This was a TREAT! It is fascinating to learn the history of these items, many of which I've only seen parts of, reminds me of the tin lithographed doll houses that had plastic furniture in primary colors!
Glad that you enjoyed the video! Jeanne and I thought about including a doll house with plastic furniture, but decided the amount of metal in the house far out-weighed the amount of plastic. the next time we display a 1950's tree, that doll house will be there :-)

This is a great video! Dr. Johnson, you explain things so well, that I could listen to you all day. This video, along with your other Christmas videos are very good. I can't say enough good things. 🙂
Wow! Thank you so much for such a well curated and informative video! I collect Christmas decorations from different eras, and this helped me to identify single small pieces that I assumed were more contemporary since they were plastic. I was born in 1965 so I can remember things I saw in stores when I was younger and decorations my family had from earlier since my parents were married in 1954. The historical furniture and architecture in the rooms where these treasures were displayed offer a wonderful contrast to the vibrant colors and shapes of the many forms of plastics. Such an amazing arrangement of objects and an incredible knowledge of these items that may have originally been thought of as disposable. It must have been a lot of hard work and contemplation of what to include! A very enjoyable experience, Merry Christmas!
So glad you enjoyed the video and the display. We have decorated the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio for 24 years and as we tae down this year's plastic display, we will be thinking and planning with the director of the museum what to display for Christmas 2025. So, yes, you are correct it takes a lot of planning.
Two of my favorites are the Jewel Brite ornaments I brought to decorate our classroom tree in the second grade in 1965. Then I took them back home and we used them for several more years and still have them. And the Noma and Royal Halo candles that I have in my avatar. What you call a candelabra, I call a candolier. You probably know Royal made the bubble light candolier--I have one with the original yellow bubble lights in their Royal cardboard sleeves. Thank you, George and Jeanne, for showing us all this plastic stuff some would call tacky and disposable. For that very reason it's hard to find now.
How I loved bubble lights!!! My great aunt had that boat out every Christmas. Probably went in the trash when she died. She had a plastic music box church that lit up. I think it was notre dame. I still have grand dad’s Bradford tree topper but it’s broken. What a great video.
I love the candelabras with all of the candles. I found some at Goodwill and I snagged those right up. I just think they look so good in the window. My mom had these big beautiful red plastic bells. They were heavy plastic and when they turned on they looked beautiful in the front window. It’s hard to find good bells. Loved the video! It brings back so many memories of my grandparents and older aunts and uncles. They had a lot of this stuff.
