Dudes and Dudette... You are outdoing your selves here. If you would have asked me one year ago, "how could Delos get any better?" I would have said, it can't. Well, I was wrong about that. This new format you have going is awesome! I have never seen anything like this ever, on any platform TV, documentary film, reality show, vlog, blog, or even books. This is pure independant media. It's groundbreaking and it's better than anything on any platform, anywhere right now. I know you are not the only ones breaking ground in this uncharted territory but you are doing it with unmatched authenticity and genuineness. What you are doing with your lives is truly unique but, so is what you are doing on UA-cam. I love these technical, interview, side episodes things Is what I am really trying to say kinda HA! love it guys. Thank you.
My impression is that this has been one of the "inside look" videos that will include the tech stories later on. The beauty is that these supplement the main narrative and give us SV Delos adventure more often.
To the crew, well done, all hands on deck doing there jobs. Ah, tis a bit of nice work your doing in navigating and charting the weather systems on your never-ending journey's, excellent. Take this as a compliment from a now 71 year old retired sea dog sailing a 64' Ketch (SV Eluthrous)throughout msny s passage in the Caribbean islands back in the 70s-80s. We didn't have all the updated digital solutions (sigh) you now have at your fingertips, good on technology and even better and safer on the entire crew and vessel. Many was the time we put to sea with fair weather on the horizon only to sail into a falling barometer and 15-20 meter crests, reef, reef and more reef along with a hard pulling sea anchor anf bare sticks a few times, could have done without that.... again, thank you, will be following you on your fantail, sail on and thank you again for the untamed spirit and pure joy you bring to the table. David, capt. SV Eluthrous (ret) not dead, just at 71 couldn't handle the Ketch any longer ,she's a lot of muscle work.
Loving this technical-side video, gang! I'd love to see more like this as a sub-series of your primary episodes. Your content continues to get better and better! Cheers from NYC!
Today in class I decided to use this video in my class as we were talking about weather and climate. The students do not have a real idea how important weather can be in your life. So I decided to show this clip to the class, it was interesting to watch them as you were discussing the route options etc. For my students I think that this was the first time that they saw a connection between weather and the impact in can have on you. They were also impressed with the size of the waves and how scary it looked. Thanks for the good info, students enjoyed it and we had a good discussion afterwards.
Thank you for the weather planning video. How cool to show simple basic cut outs of the weather and current, explains everything so simply. Super helpful. This juggle of lows and currents sound so similar to what the Newport Bermuda racers deal with crossing the Gulf Stream and trying to figure out the best place to cross. Also the crossing to the Bahamas. . .never in a North Wind! More of this please! Cheers!
Ok I did not want that to end. Your videos are so different now I love the vibe. Man I am not a sailor just learning but that was so so fascinating. I love the way you demonstrated it with the cut outs it made it simplistic and then when u took it to the program that was incredible. I guess it's amazing that tool and it looks like Brady has really got a good understanding of that program amazing! Can I say knowledge is so sexy and that Brady my god gorgeous!,,,all 3 of you have so much experience this video really shows you there is a lot more to sailing than a lot of people think. Thanks for another awesome video. All the best with your sail to the next destination.
Filman Santiago- Likely will not happen. They have been approached but Brian is unwilling at this time to give up creative control and in my humble opinion, it's the right choice.
I love these kind of videos from you guys. Not many people explain the kind of weather and current you can typically encounter in specific parts of the world. As a novice, this kind of info is extremely important to me and helps with our own decisions and travel path. Please keep these navigational videos apart of your normal vids!
As one of the people who was worried about the direction your videos were potentially heading in (style over substance) I really enjoyed this episode. Well done - I learned heaps from it that I will use in my own sailing. Great storytelling.
This vid was super instructable. So many factors to consider in that part of the ocean. Can imagine why all the wrecks are there. Thanks for sharing all your cool tools. Brady gave a great visual.
This is really impressive, guys. I just discovered you and have been going through past episodes. I fly up at 37,000 feet where we have to deal with 200 kt jetstreams but have similar queries, as turbulence is the worst where the jet meets the calmer air. You want the push but it can get really gnarly getting in and out of that jetstream. I'm so impressed that you put that much thought into where to go and when to head out. This was a really, really worthwhile episode.
Wow amazing how in depth one sail can be. Brady a few videos ago had a light bulb moment thinking about sailors In the old days navigating the globe with no electronic help and how gnarly that would be. Seeing this with amazing equipment and very skilled sailors is still scary. But I guess that's just the thrill that comes with sailing. It's always the unknown. -Jordan from California ⛵️
Very cool! I like the granular view behind the sailing scene. This makes it real and not a TV show. Another thing I noticed is how lovely it is to have Brian, Brady, and Karen in the same shot -- thanks to the good camera work of your guest crew K & D.
Fascinating! Riveting! Thanks for enabling all of us ankle deep sailors to experience sailing to far horizons with a crew of really cool people on an amazing boat!
Love your route planning and equipment explanations. I wouldn't mind if you shared your sail plan and trim considerations in various weather conditions. Keep em coming, you're the best!
Nice to see real sailing issues explored. We love the scenics and globe-trotting parties, but ... this is far preferable for us sailing folk. Hope to depart ourselves early this winter from Oregon. Looking forward to the boring, boring tropical weather. You guys/girls have a happy, safe crossing!
Very well done! That information is so useful. Today I was sailing in 30 knots of wind on a windsurfer, and I could only imagine how intense and exhausting that would be on a 54ft yacht in the ocean with a 1000 mile fetch!
Hello Delos! This segment was great and really enjoy the education that you provided. While I have done a little Chesapeake Bay sailing in my younger days, I have decided that I'm going to live vicariously through you for the open ocean experience. BTW went on a Caribbean cruise in February and proudly wore my Delos t-shirt in a few ports of call.
Your new crew has really upped the production value on the episodes. Love the new camera work on this one, and always great to see what the Delos crew is up to.
Some of those waves at the beginning of the video were awe inspiring. You must feel like an insignificant spec surrounded by moving mountains. I can't even imagine what that is like.
been following your life for a little over 2 yrs ,have to say unique, informative with a personal twist. some of the best stuff on UA-cam it touches pne beyond the heart.best of luck be safe have a blast hopefully our paths shall cross someday soon.god bless Fair winds Windhunter
What a great video you guy!!. It pulls together all the information about the various technologies available and helps us armchair sailors understand what it talks to cross an ocean. No matter all the technology it still comes down to interpretation and decision making. It looks like you have made the best decision you can with the information you had. Hopefully it worked out.thanks again
Great Vid Delos. Really interesting for newbies but also very interesting to us northern hemisphere sailors. Many watching these vids don't realise how much agonising over weather forecasts and tidal charts that is an essential part of going to sea. Here in Wales we have very similar planning processes just to cross the Irish Sea to get to Ireland. Keep it up and have fun. Cheers
Excellent! I love the beautiful editing and stories of your other videos but I think the more technical end of sailing is so important too. And you do it so well. Excellent!
Originally I wrote, "I love the technical and boat stuff the most!", but your balance between stories, history, personalities, adventure, tourism, culture, etc doesn't suck at all! And SAILING!
I have to say that I love this!! I like how it seems more raw and less edited. (not that the other videos are not good, cause they are!!) very informative too!! please keep up the awesome work!!!
Hey guys, I really found this video to be super helpful and interesting. Thanks for giving us a chance to learn a bit more about the specifics while we with you on your journey. More videos like this, occasionally, would be warmly welcomed. Cheers!
Really liking the new format Delos crew, keep it up! I also like the technical aspects of your sailing, please do more of this style of video in the future!
Wow Delos Crew, you always mix it up and keep the videos exciting, fun, adventurous, and informative. You never disappoint, thanks for all of these fantastic videos. Stay safe and have fun!!! Hugs to you all. 😆⛵
The name of your satellite device is called iridium is because there was supposed to be 77 satellites in orbit giving global coverage but not all were sent up. Iridium the element has the atomic number 77. With not all satellites in orbit polar regions can be "black" for no coverage. Safe sailing and I love all your videos!
Excellent video. Very educational to see your decision making strategies, accumulation of data, and assessment of the team. These videos are a priceless indicator of how difficult sailing can be, but how anyone with the right skill and resourcefulness can do it. Great job.
Thanks for posting this. It was very informative on how to use various tools available to gain accurate information and enable sailors to make decisions on where and how to naigate weather.....well done
A great analysis and example of the practical use of predict wind. Thank you so much for the tutorial -- every little bit of exposure to this type of video adds to the knowledge base. Thank you for posting.
Thanks so much for this. It's nice to hear smart people plan for safety, doing research and getting it all done in a proper way! AND having fun with it all! Personally, I love staling, meteorology and science. Always squeezing the most out of the boat. So nice to see you all enjoying life. It warms my heart to see such a good narrative and such a grand adventure. It reminds me of my younger days exploring the world. 💨⛵ = 😎😊
Great technical content... cool to see how you are able to make informed decisions with the most current weather intel... looking forward to the Crossing the Altlantic episode and seeing if you opt to travel around Cape Horn or go thru the Panama Canal
This is awesome stuff! I can't wait to see more of this from you guys. You always make it seem so easy it's good to see how your equipment works and how the work behind the scenes goes. People are going to be coming back to these episodes for a long time to come for education and research. I am sure you are aware of it, but you guys are on par with Jacques Cousteau, but even more entertaining. This really makes me think back to the shows I would watch is the class room and how they would get me daydreaming of one day when I would take an adventure like that. Oh wait!! I'm doing that now. :) Best wishes my friends!
Guys and Gals! That was an awesome discussion on the weather and route strategy! It was way cool because I thought of the old salts sailing by the seat of their friggin pants back in the day. We depend on this shit for all of our everyday decisions, however you discussion and perceptions was awesome. You make a great team! Travel safe and well! Greeting from the shores of Lake Huron- Sarnia, Ontario- Canada
Fantastic how you are covering the full spectrum of offshore cruising. Glad to see a more 'serious' content and judging by many other comments, the feeling is the same.....although keep the parties going too. cheers
it's awesome to see how you guys make your decisions, and the way your filming now makes us feel more like we are part of the experience, AWESOME! the out of sequence thing is messing me up though a little bit lol
When I first saw the waves on this video I thought the whitecaps were clouds along the ridges of a mountain! Whoa be Delos, Awesome display of those monstrous waves. Brain storming vs Weather storming carving out a plan like 3 generals getting ready for battle. Great info tech-no video, Now I gotta wait another week. Sorry you missed Mardi Gras today in New Orleans!
Wow, great video. I really enjoyed watching brothers decision making process, with tech (weather route) crew and boat capabilities. I've made decisions like this mid ocean with my brother, but with a sextant and shortwave radio, sorry for dating myself, but I am a huge fan of your videos because of this style of filming.
Excellent vlog as always guys love watching you all. Was disappointed Brian didnt like it he likes it alot at the end of the vlog we always laugh at that love it
Just watched this and thank you. It was really really interesting to hear the thought processes that you went through in deciding your passage planning. This video was just as interesting as all the ones you do that are fun and full of exotic destinations
Another excellent video guys! Really great description of how that specific set of weather patterns and currents work to make a trip nice or nasty. Like most of the other comments are saying, this is a cool format for informing and entertaining us all. But we could do with some drama! maybe a major disagreement or a tantrum, (wink wink) like on the other reality shows I loathe! No way! Keep up the fantastic work team!
I've tried Predict Wind and was really disappointed in the routing. At first, it seemed like a really neat program, but the end result was a frustrating, slow passage. I'd recommend sailors also look at Digital Wave's Visual Passage Planner. It's not as pretty, but it has the wind and current data from the Atlas of Pilot Charts built in, which you can toggle on and off as an overlay. I find it to be a good starting point so that one understands the prevailing conditions. And then you can make weather forecast adjustments to the route. Also, I'd recommend the InReach 2-way text while underway. We used that to get weather updates and it was spot on.
Hello Brian and Crew. First many thanks for your informative and kind email, which I was happy to get. One question about the SSB/HAM radio in the IO. Did you try it and if so how was it? I have never heard that it would not work well for GRIP files/emails. Would avoid the expens for the Iridium Go, if possible, as it cost USD 1.150-1.300 plus USD 250/year. But I agree with you the Predictwind and Iridium Go looks attractive. Great videos as usual. Congratulation to you all from Paul on S/Y New Dawn (HR53) currently in a refit in Pangkor Marina, Malysia.
Paul Donn is that $1,150-1,300 per month or year for Iridium Go? Does SSB/HAM over IO do the same job only not as graphical? I'm hitting the seas in a few years so I'd love to you. All the best for the re-fit!
Hey Paul, actually we didn't try the SSB in the IO and kind of wish we had just to see. We did use it for all the previous passages with WinLink and found that it worked great for email and also receiving grib files. Totally free if you use WinLink, a small yearly fee if you use sailmail. Hope that helps! Fair Winds and enjoy a nice cold Tiger for us :)
That's just the initial equipment cost. The initial equipment cost for the SSB can also be expensive, if I remember correctly more than the Iridium but you will eventually save on the bandwidth fees. You can almost do the same with the SSB but you'll need to use a program like Airmail with winlink or sailmail to get Gribs as attachments. Hope that helps! Brian
Hey Brian : 45 minutes of airtime for 520kb, hmm... The result is awesome on screen and you guys got a good weather brief but I just checked the cost and as an example a minute of data on a 500 minutes card is about 0.75$. So that file did cost about 30-35 bucks. Did I get that right?
Hello Brian. Many thanks for your comments. I do use Airmail all the time and have done so for the last 75.000 nm, but when I can't reach any of their stations, I use Winlink. The latter, as you know, has many more stations, but often they are busy. The Grip files via SSB/HAM are fine, but I found your video interesting and your routing software excellent. I have used this when I have Internet, but not while sailing. What got me to write to you from what I noted in your video, was that the SSB/HAM would not work in the IO, which I have not heard before, and will be checking with people sailing there at the moment. You are still in the IO and perhaps you should test it, if you have the time; although you now have the Iridium Go, which seems to be more performing. Enjoy Union Island and hopefully you speak some French, as this should help facilitate you in those islands. Will have a beer to toast you and your crew for all the good videos and details you have included in them. Best regards. Paul Donnerup; S/Y New Dawn
Thanks for uploading vids like this. I realize they don't get as many views as the more exciting vids, nevertheless, they give a glimpse into why you make certain decisions.
Wow guys great video thanks so much for making this one. Very interesting and informative. May be one of my favorite videos of yours yet. Hope you have a safe trip across the Indian Ocean. Looking forward to your next adventure. :)
Hey Delos! Hopefully a helpful tip, but have you thought of cross referencing the route with your other weather/wind Device to see if you can use the two to find an ideal "middle ground." Thought it might give you some additional security in knowing both weather devices are somewhat close.
Great vid as always. I enjoyed this one even more because of the educational value of your route planning. This is what want to be ocean navigators need, you guys are doing it.. not island hopping in the Caribbean. Question: a 40 minute download must get pricey on the Iridium, is this really practical for most ocean navigators?
I am quite supportive of this new direction for the videos. This is the decision making process at sea. Very well done. Did you fix the leak on the bow thruster?
Very informative. Thanks for the tutorial as I'm about to purchase the Iridium Go and download PredictWind for our upcoming voyage. Keep up the great work Delos!
I was thinking of the possibility of running the Blue route before the software made the suggestion... Very interesting how to study the maps and talk about what routes are best to take to keep things safe and efficient when sailing
Bradster...grand job my mate! Love the way you explained everything in vast details.. And THANK YOU Brian for showing us the Iridium up close . I hold a General Class license in amateur radio so love to know "why" you chose that over the SSB, (i.e. spotty connection in the Indian Ocean) Your video editing skills are outstanding, It looked like you were using some screen capture software to get up that close on Brady's laptop. BTW...what type and how long is the coax you're using from the Iridium to the outside antenna? Do you ever have problems with signal even using the outside antenna? PEACE OUT
Dudes and Dudette... You are outdoing your selves here. If you would have asked me one year ago, "how could Delos get any better?" I would have said, it can't. Well, I was wrong about that. Nice! So how much that 43min download did cost you? :) And we're still waiting for tech video about repairs done in Capetown. Fair winds!
My impression is that this has been one of the "inside look" videos that will include the tech stories later on. The beauty is that these supplement the main narrative and give us SV Delos adventure more often.

Thanks Delos crew for another superb video. If I beat this cancer we're moving back to HI and going to sail to Asia. This tech info is the best.
A bit different to the usual content but.... absolutely loved this episode. Thank you for continuing to inspire us on our journey.
Awesome video Delos is the best on UA-cam you need to come back to Australia 👍
Loved this video guys - watching how you work through the decision making on when to turn based on the weather forecast. Good Stuff!
Love hearing the more of the technical side of sailing! Keep up the great work!
Was disappointed Brian didnt like it he likes it alot at the end of the vlog we always laugh at that love it
Great Video.... Love to see videos how you install stuff on Delos when you get new things..
Just watched this and thank you. It was really really interesting to hear the thought processes that you went through in deciding your passage planning.
This video was just as interesting as all the ones you do that are fun and full of exotic destinations
So good! -- QUESTION -- How strong are the deck to hull joints on an Amel Super Maramu? How are they fastened?? Do they ever leak or come apart?
Great stuff, good to see it isn't all beer and beaches!
Wow when I thought Delos couldn't get any better! Amazing! Great content! Would love to see more of these decision processes.
I love the videos guys....but this one might be one of the most valuable videos yet! Thanks!
Super interesting!! Thanks!! Please report on how the passage went through the route you went with.
Wow guys! Outstanding presentation! Such a great adventure.
Thanks again.
John H.
Thank you SOOOOOO much for this video! I love them all, but this was so super informative! LOVE IT!
this is very informative. good job guys . more technical videos pls! :)
I am quite supportive of this new direction for the videos. This is the decision making process at sea. Very well done.
Did you fix the leak on the bow thruster?
really nice to see brothers getting along
Very informative. Thanks for the tutorial as I'm about to purchase the Iridium Go and download PredictWind for our upcoming voyage. Keep up the great work Delos!
Great video, really enjoyed the weather planning insight, looking forward to more of these.
Thanks for the Infomation love learning about the weather systems!
your Videos are always fun to watch but this one is truly excellent. Never heard things explained so well!
Wow...some incredible filming. That opening scene was amazing.
One of the best episodes yet. I was one who voted for more technical information. Maybe you could do one a month.... I also support you on Patreon.
That is really good explaining, helps me understand a little about how weather works. Thanks!
PEACE OUT
Little meercat pops out of the cabin at the end... we're turning, right now?! hahaha
loving it all guys, see you on the flip side, good luck
agree with the overwhelming consensus. every video produced is more polished than the previous. cheers!
I've been watching you guys for a few years now...you keep getting better like a fine aged rum ;)
