Those "scary faces" you saw almost everywhere are called "teste di moro" there is a legend connected to them. 😂
During the Moors domination in Sicily, 11 century, there was a lovely young girl who lived in the Kalsa neighborhood in Palermo. Every day she used to spend time on the balcony of her house taking care of her plants and flowers. One day a young Moor passing by saw her and was captured by her beauty and declared his love to her, which was immediately returned. After some time, the girl discovered that her beautiful lover would soon have to leave her to return to his country where wife and children were waiting for him.
She decided then to plot her revenge: she waited for the night to come and while he was sleeping she beheaded him. What could she do with his head? She decided to use it as a vase for her lovely flowered balcony, so that her lover would stay with her forever.
She then planted some basilico which bloomed so beautifully that the whole neighborhood in Palermo copied the idea and made clay pots of the shape of a Moor head.

Where do I start...the unbelievable flowers, gardens, Italian pots...I've been to Italy 4 times myself, but this is such a beautiful place...I could almost smell the jasmine. The food, the views, the vegetation...oh and of course - that view of Charlie getting ready for dinner...wowza. And the food looked amazing as well. I’m in my mid 50’s with some health challenges as well as financially knowing I will ever be able to enjoy this type of vacation, so living it vicariously through you both has been such a treat. I’ve been married almost 34 years and I wish you both many many more years together making fabulous memories.

What memories for me!!! I was in Sicily some years ago with a school project, Finland was the othe member country. We were staying in a hotel in Accireale, which is worth it visiting. Lots of anecdotes then, and wearing the same clothes for a week, our suitcases turned up the evening before coming back. Very welcoming people. Hugs from northern Spain once more!

Since watching every episode of Inspector Montalbano (highly recommended) where they show you fabulous parts of Sicily and amazing food while he’s trying to solve the crime, we’ve been dying to go. Sicily is beautiful as were all your colorful dresses Josie. Just a friendly reminder that 90% of wrinkles are caused by the sun. If you’re wearing sunscreen and you’re still getting tan you are getting sun damage. Stick to fake tan if you like color but stay out of that sun. You’ll be so thankful later.

I love Taormina. I live in Sicily just over four years and miss it dearly so I am thoroughly enjoying living vicariously through you. I am surprised you didn’t choose the peninsula or Amalfi coast, but either way, what a fantastic choice. And wonderful for you for snacking on granita rather than gelato as most people tend to go for gelato. Lemon or peach granita with fresh brioche is perfect for a hot summer treat. Oh I miss it so!

We were in Taormina last year (just for a day trip) - it's so beautiful! We stayed on Ortigia Island - well worth looking at as an alternative destination in Sicily if you decide to come back.

You’re so cute and I love that you were speaking Italian. My father is from Alcamo Sicily so just one tiny suggestion. You kept saying tutti bene which means “ everything is good” but if you meant to say it’s very good you would say Molto Bene. In the case of your amazing pistachio pasta lunch ooh it was correct to say Tutti Bene because it was ALL looking Good. This was such a beautiful mini moon, your outfits were all perfection. I’m so glad you were able to do this. ❤
