It would have been much easier if we observed that 2^k-1= 63, therefore 2^k =64, thus giving k=6. Since b=5 and b=6, then a=b+k =11.

If we have to trial and error the combination of factors of 2016 (as is done here) we might as well guess 2¹¹ - 2⁵ = 2016 and save some time. In fact it's less than a guess because we're given that 2 ᵃ > 2016
