I love searching for new spots. Meeting new people via Skateboarding. Or explore a new town or city, visit their local skate shop, skateparks, spots.
      Ask your friends.
Ask your Skateboarding friends or skateboarders in the parks, spots what their Skateboard set up is, spec it out and why their set up is like that.
Skateboarding essentials for a session or even a trip. What and why is it essential to them.

I like this video - it's like a podcast with video. I'd like to hear the opinion of people who are deeply immersed in the culture - you, Dan, spencer etc. on what it takes to be pro in their opinion. I've always wondered if people believe once you reach a certain technical level you deserve to be pro, or if you need to contribute to skateboarding in a unique way to be pro. Not to mention all the ideas I've never considered. Anyways, that's my video idea and what I'd like to hear your and others opinion on.

As an old Skater, I have not quit skating but I don’t skate everyday, that doesn’t mean I don’t think about it everyday. So when it is in your blood you will always see things differently, than as a non skater

What if someone way of having fun on a skateboard is to push their limits, put themselves in a place where they get hurt, etc. this topic just becomes a double edged sword is a problem. People quit skateboarding because they can’t help that it’s not fun anymore. I think if you’re not part of a community, than it isn’t “fun” and most people love to say “just have fun” and not acknowledge that they sound like a religious person telling a non believer to “let God into your life” you aren’t selling any real advice. No shit you’re supposed to have fun

Hej Zack , long story longer , on my Bday 50 years old , i brought a cruiser 58mm wheels, one year later , i broke my collar bone , motorcycle accident , changed to 8.5 Peralta board 54mm wheels , now after 3 years of skating , anything popsicle 8 inches with all the concave i can get , its all the exercise and Degen a man needs , overload actually . But i did start in 1979 with my Brothers in England , we all had Penny Boards . Fast forward 44 years and i really enjoy your commitment , unique style , focus , smooth voice , and regular DIY contents , Its been a trip , so i would like to say , thanks for everything dude , You the man.

I had to take a 2 week break from skating. I just got back on my board yesterday. I skated an empty school parking lot by myself. I pretended I was in a contest. I used what little I had as my personal skatepark. I had fun, I felt that I got refreshed, and now I am itching to go out and skate. I hope my experience is helpful. 🤙

i think people are quitting also because of social media cliques and in person cliques where if you arent local or arent a homie you get vibed out of you get snaked or people just talk sh** and people get the idea that because they arent "better" or they cant "keep up with the locals" they just give up

I never have had a bad session at a skatepark tho people are always cool and I always make friends every time usually with the best skaters there lol so maybe it’s just being open to people and skating your best. People usually are cool 😎 at most skateparks in California.

That's funny you say keeping up with the locals. Every skatepark is different especially at different times. What I realized is consistency is key, even if you are starting out, just keep doing what you are doing as long as you are having fun. That is literally the most important part, if you are smiling, even when you go down, you are winning and doing it right. If you are pissed off and angry, then maybe a break of skating is needed.

  • @7plyTherapy
    @7plyTherapy Місяць тому +12

I think you are right about many of the points you made Zack, I would just add a few things. UA-cam skaters struggle with mental health that highly stems from burnout (not always the case), it takes a certain kind of person to make videos, specially of themselves and puts them out there for others to judge; burnout happens more when you take something you love and make it into a job that pays the bills, like you said it takes away from the creativity. As a therapist I have a theory that social anxiety is at an all time high because of social media; social media has created parasocial relationships, where viewers feel connected to the media creators, but it’s only a one way interaction, therefore the viewer does not learn how to socialize, and feels awkward when they try to. Living in the virtual world has taken away from real world social interactions.

Interesting to listen as a gigging musician who hopped back on a skateboard recently during a creative lull with music. Sometimes the best thing to keep me interested in making music is just letting it sit for awhile and going after something else. About a year or so ago the same situation happened with youtube music producers, a lot of people getting burnt out and making "I might quit youtube" videos. I think the way our social media algorithms demand consistent content from our creators is part of the equation here in that realm as well. To counter that, there are touring bands I love who don't play the content game so intensely and only promo or share updates as things are happening. their updates become that much more special and exciting. If we're constantly digging for something to share with the internet all the time I think eventually it leaves nothing left to fulfill the creator. Anyways, enough tangents! It's been a pleasure to discover your channel through Dan and Spencer's videos. Hope to cultivate a similar supportive set of peeps in Detroit for skating. This video is a good reminder stepping back into it to take breaks and appreciate the slow progression and creative process of improving.

Thanks for this video, appreciated! Got a lot I can relate to in this, really important to have fun and not put too much pressure on always trying to get that new trick and a clip of it, can become frustrating if every time you are pushing for advancement or learning something new or worrying about always aiming to get more consistent and so on, really rewarding to just chill and roll at times, to not push for more and especially drop the need to film clips all the time, Instagram feed can be inspiring but also a toxic pressurizing thing if you see others constantly outdoing themselves or some ultra level tricks fill up your screen. Social anxiety too, relate to that at times too.. Skateboarding is all about fun and it is also about attitude, gladly mostly supportive and accepting within the community. Your video helps, thanks for sharing!

The decline of skating has nothing to do with artistry or anything it’s a list
1-toxic enviroment older skaters getting vibed out by the younger skaters thinking they own the park etc.
2-the division between different types of skaters. Street vs vert vs long boarders etc etc.
Bottom line is a lot of skaters have been straight up ass&$les and it’s just not a fun enviroment when you have a clique of 4 or 5 skaters that are friends snaking everybody else out. I’m an older guy who still skates I started in the early 80’s and I still skate albeit not at the same level as my younger days and I feel the negative vibe coming from younger skaters. Personally I skate alone or with my son and stay away from everybody.

I bought a regular skateboard again and I don't know how much will IT take to make a single kickflip again, but I don't want my life without a flip, grab or slide...

Don't forget that most of the viewers don't even leave comments, we just be vibing, enjoying the content, and getting inspired to out and do something ourselves. I don't usually consider leaving comments on your content (as is the case with most content) because I'm chillin in bed before or after my day and I'm not thinking too hard on anything. But you best believe I'm not sitting here hating from the comfort of my bed! Lot's of love

The sad truth is my friend just don’t wanna skate that badly and I do but I refuse to go skate alone all the time. To me skateboarding thrives in social situations so if the friends never wanna go it’s time for me to put up the ole skateboard

I got back into skateboarding a little less than a year ago. I'm still not good by any means, but I skate at a few skateparks around 3-5 times a week. So far, I've had about a 90% positive experience with other skaters. I'm becoming friends/friendly with a handful now, all of whom are much more experienced than me. I think if you just have a good attitude and don't worry about what others think, the community will be good to you. I always try to practice good skatepark etiquette and it seems to work.

And this, a perfect example as to why I NEVER mix passion with money(income/job).
    It becomes “un” fun.
That being said, I have my issues and couldn’t do this. It’d take 20 years to edit my branching mind thinking out loud. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But no doubt… you are one of the few I watch on social media because you are obviously a thinker, positive… informative and not boring. It’s real.
    It’s good content.
I know we differ on what we like about our boards and ride.
By knowing what you don’t like about products, made me know I would.
    Whatever you do.
Do what’s good for you, always.
Being a person who hates being filmed, it’s easy to not mix.
    And I am a photographer😆

Video suggestion: DIY unusual skate obstacles, like that weird park bench angled thing you made a while back. I like building DIY, but I want to build outside-the-box obstacles.

I remember when I slowed way down, and couldnt land tricks that I used to nail. It was seriously horrible. I was done. Ive recently started back up again after a very long time. My legs arent even strong enough to ollie. After day 1 my legs were killing me... Im 46 and was at my skating prime around 23. Its been so long.

    Zach.
As an older skater at 47 just getting back into again… i can tell you the stoke is back, and alot of it is to do with dudes like yourself, taking the time to tell and show us.
My aim at the moment is to do my first 50/50 grind and kick back in.
Boardslide a good way and keep safe.
Just want you to know that you ate appreciated it whatever your decision is
Just know that a fire can always get to embers… but it dont take to much to get it going again. Enjoy that low heat buddy.
    Love from Australia

for me it was serious knee injury and my inner need to constantly get better. even when i didnt feel like it. also skating in my area got boring for me, cus for real in my city there are like 4 skate spots. and i know i could have been more creative but doing similar stuff on slightly distinct obstacles stopped making me feel good. Onto all of that i also started feeling really lonely, i didnt fit with skateboarders in my area, whom all of them smoke weed or party and do drugs; alcohol, nicotine, etc. I dont know how to also point out well that at the time i was quitting i had to study more becouse i need to get into a good university and honestly just like doing maths. So quitting skating helped me drift to studying more and now i'm happier than ever about my grades and with prospects of going to a good university. I dont need to fear about completly destroying my ankles or knees while also having more time to study and i think at least when there is no summer vacation and my knee is still injured; i wont be skating no matter what

I just wanna see you shredding with your friends and having a good time. I don’t even need a commentary personally, not that I dislike it. I do also like the transition lesson videos. Actually, would you be able to do a video on learning transition for people who skated street their whole lives? I can shred a box, flat bar, used to skate stairs, so I’m pretty comfortable on a board. I’d love to see some tips on the difference between street and transition skating, like how it feels to roll up the transition and get into different grinds rather than popping into something. But either way I’m enjoying the content.

I don't make videos about my riding so i don't really have any issues with negative comments but as i am a bit older now i do find that motivation to go riding by myself sometimes is lacking so I try to ride with my only other friend that still shreds as often as possible and that definitely helps keep me going.

I’m 46, been skating my whole life and still skate every day but quit skating pools and transition after I broke two ribs last year in a skate park. I’ve only been long boarding though I have a collection of 27 skateboards. All different types and styles but mainly just ride a 32” Land Yachtz Battle axe with a Vibe Ride brake which made it possible to ride any hill confidently. Skateboarding still makes my life better and more fun.
