- The Johnson and Nephew Wire Works, also known as the Ambergate Wireworks, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century.
Originally, the site was an iron forge owned by the Hurt family around 1847.
It became derelict and was later rebuilt by Johnson and Nephew around 1870
The wireworks were a significant employer in the area, providing jobs to many local residents. The company specialized in galvanizing cable armouring wires and conducted various experiments, including submerging galvanized steel plates in the Irish Channel.
The works sits on either side of the River Derwent with its long thin buildings designed specifically to allow long wires to be drawn and twisted, before being coiled.
The wire produced at Ambergate was used in various industries, including telecommunications, warfare, farming, engineering, energy, and fashion.
The legacy of the wireworks is still remembered today, with historical records and photographs documenting its impact on the local community.
Many of the buildings have been repurposed for other industries and remain in use.
One of the buildings closest to the road has been taken over and is now the home of the Great British Car Journey, an extensive collection of British Motor Cars over the years.
