- Chris Lutgen's Nissan Frontier made a horrendous loud noise after thieves stole his catalytic converter.
He decided not only to get a new converter, but also a cage made of rebar for added protection.

If the thieves keep on stealing catalytic converters and law enforcement doesn't do anything about it whatsoever I say now is the time for open season on those thieves .

Make it 10 years in prison. People miss work because of this crime, and some victims are hit multiple times with this same crime. Many live paycheck to paycheck and can't even afford medical or dental care. No mercy for these thieves!
Back in the day people used to take their whole car stereos in the house to keep them from getting stolen. Thieves will be thieves. They'll just move on to the next one.

The media loves to talk about this but they never mention that it's the buyers of stolen Cat's, the auto shop owners who are responsible for this crime. There are several huge theft rings around the state, and the ring leaders are the buyers, the auto shop owners. When law enforcement decides to target the buyers, this crime will disappear overnight.
So you're going to take all the fucking responsibility 100% away from the people that cut them out of innocent people's cars? GTFO !!!

Charge the shop's that buy the converter's.... make an incentive to identify the salers... charge them with more than a misdemeanor otherwise you're throwing tissue in a gun fight..

Dude the guy's a mechanic he owns the shop he charges about $150 an hour what do you think it should cost? That's normal... he's not employed by some owner making $25 an hour

@@cliffdariff74 the scope of the work is not 300 dollars, the materials cost less than 25 for sure, a child could do the job of putting a cage on a converter.

Wrong! There are several huge theft rings operated by the buyers and auto shop owners. In southern California 7+ people from one auto shop who knowingly buys stolen Cat's were arrested. This crime is so big in California there are 100's of thieves.

@@pleco101 No, they put special screws. It just makes it harder and more time which thieves only want those that take less than10 minutes, usually 6 minutes. I got the Cat Shield on my Element after they cut one end off before I chased them away.

I think I saw it here on UA-cam where you spray paint your catconverter with a brightly colored, high temperature paint. Then you etch the last four numbers (or was it more?) of your VIN on it to make it REALLY conspicuous and impossible to sell.
Most of these incidents happen at night when thieves can't see if they're painted so that's completely useless.

As long there is buyers there is thieves. They won't steal them if they can't sell them. Catch the buyers first and the theft will stop.

Here's why: when the thieves get out, they'll simply start stealing whatever else is worth money at that time.
Considering the time, money and aggravation these thieves put people through, a lifetime prison sentence is more than adequate.
I could use the same argument for any crime really - it's best to just get them off the streets for the duration of their life.
Everyone should go look at the previous videos and pictures about catalytic converter theft. Pay attention to how many of those have a rebark age around them! Don't waste your money if they want it they will take it! And it's probably the company's putting that rebar on there that's sending one or two guys to cut it off later a few days afterwards

i blame california and epa government over reach. if they wernt so strict on emission testing and just allowed people to run straight pipes or even just resonators there wouldnt be the demand driving costs of catalytic converters up. wouldnt even surprise me if they find out the repair shops are paying the theifs just so they can get more business.

It would seem to me you could buy some cheap (less than $20 worth) cables and clamps from Lowe's or Home Depot and make your converter theft proof yourself. I can't see paying hundreds of dollars for something like that. Better yet come up with some booby traps that would injure any thief trying to steal it. That would be awesome.

@@brandonpittman5243 I'm talking about clamping it in to where a sawzall couldn't reach the cables. If a thief sees a setup like this where they are going to have to take extra time to try to deal with they're just going to move on to the next car.
Victimless crime? Really? That guy had a useless defense. If your stealing anything from anyone there is always a victim. The insurance goes up higher, some won't pay. And the owner the victim has time not using his vehicle, going to a shop. Additionally there's stress and it hurts the environment for them to be off vehicles. So yeah there's a ton of victims. That guy needs extra time just for being stupid!

Just pass a Law in All 50 states that No one can sell any converters that way if it's banned sales with the exception of certified mechanics then it will stop. Make it against the law in every state to sell to junk yards unless it's a whole car,.
So one thief is going to say this is a victimless crime. That judge should have sent him up the river for 10 years just for talking stupid. How do you say it's a victim is crime when somebody owns the vehicle that you're cutting this converter off and now they don't have a vehicle to get to work. They need to take that person's vehicle and give it away to somebody that needs a vehicle. Now they caught this guy with all these converters in his vehicle. This guy had at least 10. They need to make him take them back to where he cut these converters off. I mean they should be whooping his behind all the way to the jail and telling he slipped. But I know they can't do that one.
Those things are fn expensive, especially in a state like California with very strict emission laws.
Those thieves can only sell to scrap yards not automotive shops..by law automotive shops are not supposed to sell used catalytic converters in California.

If you have full coverage insurance on your car or truck or RV and these criminals steals your car cats from your car it should be covered by your insurance to cover for the damages done to your car
There's still usually a deductible you have to pay. For people with low or no income, that hits hard.

no. 90% of the time you will have to pay a deductible(couple hundred dollars) and also there is a chance you have to wait for your cat to come into the shop which can take 3 days to 1 month so you cant use your car until then. it really fks people over. think if that was your only car and you have to go to work to provide for your family and then go pick up your kids from school. your fked now. tons of story dude. alot of victims. cat thieves destroy and hurt the community.

Rebirth is not gonna stop them they will cut that off and scrap that also it's classified as short steel and it is quite easy to cut if you want to use something to stop them from getting a SAWZAL up in there use stainless steel it's harder to cut and it makes a lot of noise I've designed a pattern that will in case most all makes and models and models to prevent people from stealing your converter at the same time it releases the heat that comes from them
