As an Asian not living in the US, growing up and watching Fresh Prince was something I enjoyed for the reasons you shared. I did not fully understand the culture and what it is like in the US, but the show spoke to me in a level of what it meant to feel like an outsider trying to fit in but at the same time not wanting to lose your own identity. Where I come from, Hip Hop isn't popular compared to Techno, Jpop or Kpop of that era, and being Chinese and not enjoying those genres in favor of Hip Hop meant that I had very little in common with most of the kids my age. Fresh Prince taught me that being different came with its set of challenges, and despite those challenges, it reminded me never to abandon who I am, and that it was possible to be different, and still fit in as long as we're willing to put in the work and embrace one another. Thanks for making this video!
Fresh Prince was a magnificent show and was one of the few big shows that dealt with a lot of topics & culture clash even though almost all of the actors were black
What's quite fascinating about this show is how current it stays. A favorite scene in my opinion was when Carlton stood up for himself after being rejected from entering a fraternity. He recognizes his upbringing is different from others or his style and tastes does not fit in a comfortable box that pleases everyone, but he knows who he is that makes him down to earth. Most of all, he is genuine and his own man. I can confidently say the Carlton character had the biggest growth in the show despite being the butt of the joke many times, he learned and matured while never compromising the values instilled in him by the positive upbringing of his family. He got the best of both worlds from his parents and Will, He earned that respect not just as a son, but a true brother for Will.
You can tell there's genuine passion for what he's talking about, and a love for the show when you hear the tone of his voice shift roughly halfway through. It almost sounds to me as if he's about to get choked up from the subject matter alone.
A UA-cam channel changed me today. I grew up on this show too; I'm almost 40. I never considered anything other than how much this show meant to me. I never had anyone to talk to about it. I never considered what it might have meant to anyone else outside of the hardest hitting, broad-stroke episodes. I'm so grateful that this video exists. The licence plate said "qJrzsYmBKdE" and there were dice in the mirror.
i’ve been saying, FOR YEARS, that Fresh Prince of Bel Air tricked people into paying attention and caring about black lives. incredible video, my g. preciate it and you
@@dr.braxygilkeycruises1460 it’s heartbreaking, truly, but the strategy has had to be used since the civil rights movement. i can’t help but feel desensitized to the hustle
I think it's disingenuous to call it "trickery". A show starring and about African Americans became so incredibly popular among whites, and still the narrative has to be "but only because they were TRICKED into it". It was well received because of such things that were pointed out in this video. It was supremely genuine, down to earth, and original. Something people were starving for in an era of cookie-cutter sitcoms. Face it: your viewpoint on racism is just as bigoted and forced as what you claim to oppose. And it will never, EVER allow you to see a path towards amending the racial divide. You only push harder and harder against it, frothing at the mouth and shrieking that no matter what they do, no matter what the context, whites will always be oppressing blacks. Such lies only further alienate people and help NO ONE. It is 100% pure Marxist, divisionist propaganda - exactly like what happened in Russia between the classes... BLM's founders are self-described "trained Marxists", after all. One of their stated goals is to "abolish the nuclear family". That's bad news for the Banks family and all the values this show taught us.... There remain problems in our society, yes. But quit indulging in the hate-filled revolutionary rhetoric that will leave EVERYONE divided and controlled. You don't have to have a boogeyman or scapegoat group to make yourself feel morally superior. Look in the mirror and see that you have just as many problems as the rest of us.
Just started watching the show not too long ago and right now its one of the only things I watch on TV. It tells compelling stories with messages while most shows/movies nowadays just feel like soulless, in your face messages. It has personality and can connect with more than just it's target demographic while many stories nowadays invoke a desperate, negative feeling of attacking another point of view. Story tellers that attempt to convey messages and life lessons should take notes from shows like these and focus more on the story and base of the messaging then just the messages themselves.
This episode was making me think of Everybody hates Chris. When you said that we are still facing the same problems we were 30 years ago, that hit something inside me and made me think of Everybody hates Chris. You should watch and do something based on that show. Have a great day my man.
Never knew they pulled the Aunt Viv video from you and I’m terribly sorry to hear about it! One of my all time favorite nerdstalgic videos, watched it like five times on release and showed it to so many people lol
I rewatched the show for the first time recently since I was a kid and what stood out to me that I didn't remember was how much the show tackled issues facing the black community. At least in the early seasons. I think it gives the show a lot of longevity because it made it deeper than many sitcoms at the time and it was a pleasant surprise to see.
I've tried this experiment everywhere in the world I've been to. I start humming the theme song and before you know it, *everyone* around me is singing along. That show's impact worldwide has been incredible. RIP uncle Phil!
One of the best shows in history. Part of my childhood. Even as a kid you could tell some moments were powerful and could have impacted how I see the world.
That accent occasionally coming through is throwing me off 🤣 I love this show overall there’s a lot of meh episodes but there’s also so many great ones which hit home even today.
One of my favorite characters from the show is Kellogg a.k.a Cornflake, the whitest of white kids, yet you see just how much influence Will has on him in most, if not all aspects of his life.
One of the best shows ever, period. The scene where Will talks to Phil about his Father, man that hurt heavily, even thinking back on it, makes my eyes wet.
Fresh Prince is hands down my favourite TV show. It hits you on a comedy level first and foremost but then the emotional level hits hard and the lessons learned have changed who I am and how I think. I'm not old enough to actually be part of the Fresh Prince generation, but I watch through it on an almost annual basis. It's got me through some hard times, and with every watch through I spot an underlying message or a nuanced joke. A lot of people I know compare it to Friends, but they're nothing alike. Friends is just another sitcom that was more successful than most, Fresh Prince was completely different. I think the world needs a new Fresh Prince with everything going on right now, a platform to teach some positive lessons, not just about racism but everything.
Not sure if you'll see this but first off, I wanna say i loved the video! Great topic and script and everything :). 2nd though i would say to maybe reflect on why you decided to have an accent throughout the video. I love your channel and your videos but I noticed that it had a more "AAVE-ness" quality to it?(I'm sorry if thats not the best way to say it so please forgive me). I'm sure you didnt mean any harm by it but I just thought I'd point it out to you as a fellow white person/ally. Again great work and appreciate the video and the points you made, take care
I was re-watching season one last summer and was breaking down in tears over many episodes. It was just too real with all that was going on in the world.
My favorite show of all time, another great video idea could be how Carlton and Will's relationship grew over the series. The culture shock of you mentioned of Will being from the hood in Philly trying to get along with the preppy, spoiled trust fund kid Carlton. Originally Carlton struggled to relate to Will and would try to belittle him but secretly envied him ie: the basketball episode, and many more in the first couple seasons. But then they both end up loving each other for who they are as the series goes on ie: the series finale when both Will and Carlton dance to Tom Jones. Love your content!
I've been watching your series for awhile now, perhaps a year... Not sure... This is the first episode I have felt your personal feelings. I love your analysis of art, shows, etc. But this was an episode above those. Thank you.
"First things first, R.I.P Uncle Phil, for real, your the only father that I ever knew." One of my favorite shows ever, it 100% affects me. To this day it still reaches me, I still bring up so many of its episodes and topics that affected my teenage years as a young black man. Just watching your video about it is tearing me up, because that's how much it means to me and the many things I faced. And yeah I love the style, humor, the love felt with that family, you cant beat it, there hasn't been a show like it since and honestly I don't know if there ever will be.
hey man i just wanted to say while i may not have the same connection to the show as you did i still loved it and it still holds a special place in my heart

No filters, real culture, good writing... Might have to give this show a shot.
i’ve been saying, FOR YEARS, that Fresh Prince of Bel Air tricked people into paying attention and caring about black lives. incredible video, my g. preciate it and you
Isn't it sad that millions had to be *tricked into caring about* human beings who have different skin color? It *SHOULD* be sad.
As someone who's dad was hardly ever around, the episode about Will's dad hit me hard
just want to say thanks for this "very special episode." I love that you are doing what you want with the platform that you built. it's inspiring.
I saw a lot of myself in Carlton. A black kid/teen who was constantly questioned about my blackness.
Never knew they pulled the Aunt Viv video from you and I’m terribly sorry to hear about it! One of my all time favorite nerdstalgic videos, watched it like five times on release and showed it to so many people lol
I absolutely love the style and format for this one my guy!
One of the best show intros ever
I can't help singing along no matter how many times I've heard it. It's iconic.
This dissection was perfect. Thank you!
I enjoyed this format. It almost felt like you were giving us poetry at times
Man you made me appreciate it much more. I loved it as a kid and still appreciate it.
Anyone else feel like he drifts in and out of putting on an accent?
This show is absolutely timeless.
Happy to say I just learned about Bel-Air Athletics store and bought some merch from there because of you! :)
Legendary opening theme, legendary show.
Loved this video. This show is a true masterpiece, a cultural reset, timeless.
Thank you for this. So many of us grew up on this , to the point Will Smith was literally my role model for YEARS and in many ways still is.
This was beautiful Nerdstalgic, the love you feel for the show really came through 💜
I still cry when i watch the episode where his dad leaves him again. "why doesnt my dad want me" literally cant watch it without breaking down.
You have officially became my favorite content creator. Thank you for this.
“how come he don’t want me man”
absolutely tears, everytime.
I was re-watching season one last summer and was breaking down in tears over many episodes. It was just too real with all that was going on in the world.
Yooo, Nerdstalgics whole swag is different on this one. Like, his delivery and intonation are different. Wild. Very interesting.
My favorite show growing up, along with Family Matters.
One of the few shows I watched from beginning to end as they were originally aired. One of the best shows ever.
It was really nice and natural that your accent came out as you became more passionate about the show. Another great episode! 👍
I just finished rewatching the show and it hits home on so many levels
What happened to the voice of this video? Its a new guy now
Much love I love how you brought attention to this and I had to re-watch this a couple times just unpack everything beautiful work
I never comment on your videos but this was by far your best one to date, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Full House was on every morning right when I was eating breakfast for school
My favorite episode was the one where Carlton takes a drug and goes to the hospital. That one hit me hard
Yip
I've been watching your series for awhile now, perhaps a year... Not sure... This is the first episode I have felt your personal feelings. I love your analysis of art, shows, etc. But this was an episode above those. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this
Thanks for being here
The way I can just like the video even before it starts it's comforting, cuz I know I'll have a good time. Thank you
Amazing writing. 10 points to Gryffindor
The Fresh Prince was a great show. I loved watching it. You had commentary about the show, which pointed that so many shows were able to address social issues that same way that many other sitcoms were able to do.
