My daily driver is a 2 door Silverado and my my pleasure vehicle is a '67 Chevy C10. I've been waiting for the USA to produce an affordable, good looking, 2 door AWD ev pickup truck. They could make it unibody to save weight and with a motor for each axle there would be no need for a drive shaft hump, so a bench with a fold up armrest for the occasional 3rd seat would make sense. I love my 2023 Maverick Lariat (ecoboost, awd, fx4, 4k tow, luxury package) so much, that I pulled the trigger and ordered a 2025 Marverick Lariat (hybrid, awd, 4k tow). For me, my wife, my dog, and a tiny camper, it really is almost a perfect vehicle. The biggest things I would have liked to have seen for the 2025 refresh is ventilated seats and upgrading the 400w outlet in the back into the Pro Power Onboard system for the hybrid version (even if it's only the 2.4kW Pro Power Onboard version). Fingers crossed they'll keep those features in mind for when they bring the Ranger PHEV to the US (and a dang moonroof and rear vents!). There are plenty of us that want useful and capable features that refuse to "upgrade" to a massive F-150.
We have a 2023 Lariat and love it. The Lariat has a thicker windshield that makes it much quieter. You need to put a bed liner in yours before it gets scratched up.
Just want to point out can't call the Honda Ridgeline not a truck and then call this a truck. I towed a 22ft trailer 5k miles while having the bed loaded out with gen, dirtbike and ramps with a Ridgeline. I think this could pull an 18ft with bicycles in the bed...I'm curious where mpg will land when there's a towing test. .
This is a bit of a surprise TFL acquisition for me. The testing should be cool - the mileage loop, maybe an Ike, maybe a Jen/ Mary road trip? This series should be fun!
I wish the Escape looked more like a compact SUV version of this truck. We need more affordable and capable two SUVs. This is still a great option but I wish they column mounted the gear selector and had physical buttons for the HVAC, it would be perfect for what it is.

I ordered the Lariat trim hybrid with 4K/AWD and will be delivered in a week or so. I’m moving on from 22 Mave XLT eco with everything except FX4. Kinda bitter sweet but I put on almost 20K each year and want the fuel economy with the Lariat luxury. I’ll be putting Falkens Wildpeaks when I get it though 😅
They should make a 2 door extended cab with 6 foot bed. Keep the same wheelbase and overall length. Just have a more usable bed. There could be rear opening half doors to have access to the space behind the front seats.
The bronco sport body couldn’t take the extra bed/shorter cab potential loads safely. As it is ford put a bunch of engineering into a fancy brace that carries the load from the roof to the bed rails without the dorky sail panel of the Santa Cruz or 1st generation Ridgeline. Unibody has its downsides and this is one of them.
I agree, but also have questions… What about when it comes to complexity, durability/reliability? Repair ability: Cost of repair when something does go wrong with the drivetrain? Cost of repair for brake systems that have regen built into them?
@@jimmyrichards5595I have a 2019 Hyundai ioniq, with 133k... Brakes look brand new... Most of the time, the regen slows the car down when I apply normal brake pressure... Regular brakes kick in for faster stops... I've loved my ioniq hybrid, I'll be sad to trade it in when the 25 larait arrives, but looking forward to the extra capabilities of the maverick hybrid awd 4k.
Regen is 100% the transmission, no brakes involved. This means the mechanical brakes are only used for panic stops and that last little bit before you come to a stop. The transmission is a Toyota design that has proven to be able to outlast the vehicle on the prius (where it came from) and able to crank out 400,000 miles in the hybrid escape where many were used as taxi cabs in NYC. The only big question for this will be how the hybrid escape AWD system was installed in the maverick body, but it shouldn't have much to worry about as the maverick and escape are both derived from the Focus platform.
Just 2 days ago, I was gonna ask when you would get this!! Please do a Denver 100, and Gauntlet versus similar trucks. And in 1080p! Everyone got 4K computers for Christmas!
For me it's being used as a city runner lifestyle pickup. I agree if you have the money for the fancy B&W go for it. However like it was mentioned it's a small pickup. I just want the stock XL hybrid with AWD. Going to higher trims is just cushion profit l. And looking at the stock XL hybrid AWD vs the stock XLT hybrid AWD. The few trim up you get I can live with that and save money. For sure down the line I will buy trinket after market items for it . I live in Michigan and I have a jeep Renegade with heated seat and steering wheel. It rarely stays on because it's a four-cylinder engine and that engine gets to normal operation temp quickly so I barely use it even in near or below temps. I will most definitely be getting a pickup bed cap. They say having a tonneau cover or a bed cap can improve your fuel economy probably by 1 to 2 mpg. Nice review guys.
Really well done Roman! Well communicated and I liked your definition of this little truck. It seems much more like a truck, they changed the interior enough to make it seem as it’s an individual model vs grafted model. You definitely deferred that Tommy may be also correct regarding the basis of the vehicle when you were talking about it being so nice riding!! Nicely equipped truck, but those tires are pretty crappy & heavily biased towards summer driving. I have the Ranger for 24. XLT, V6 FX4, TOW PACKAGE, luxury package. It’s close, but much more $$$. In CAD money, it was $51,000 or the door plus taxes (5%). They discounted the truck almost 4K. CAD. This Maverick is over $42,000 CAD here. They really don’t seem like a deal to us at all. 😊 Thanks fellas!! Nice initial review. 😊😊
36k for the XLT the way I wanted it, is why I got the Lariat. My Lariat is currently in shipping, but my Lariat is MSRP at 39,075.....my current Maverick is a 2023, Hybrid, XLT Luxury Package. Ford estimates it to be delivered to my dealer, NLT 1/20/25. We love my '23 Hybrid, in fact my son wanted it, so it's going to him when I get my new one!
GM should use the opportunity to go straight to a compact EV pickup this size. Since they don't do hybrids. Lots of people asking for a Maverick EV. Just expect a $45K+ price.
Roman asked, "Does a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine sound good?" I bought a 2016 GMC Canyon with a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. The engine was so quiet that I couldn't hear the engine and had to look at the tachometer to know when to shift the manual transmission. I replaced the stock muffler with a Cherrybomb Vortex muffler, and now it has a deep truck sound. My fuel economy improved by about 2 MPG, and I can shift gears based on how the engine sounds. You don't need a catback exhaust system for the Maverick. Just replace the muffler to get more sound.
@TFLtalk V-Band Exhaust Clamps allow you to easily swap out the stock muffler for aftermarket and then easily put the stock muffler back on. It's no longer necessary to weld a new muffler on and then cut it off if you don't like it. One V-Band exhaust clamp comes with two flanges, so you will need two clamps and 4 flanges for one muffler. But once installed, it allows you to easily replace the muffler. You could also do a muffler comparison by easily switching between different mufflers as long as the length from flange to flange is the same length on all V-Band equipped mufflers. To get a proper sound test, instead of holding the microphone by the exhaust tip and revving the engine, you need to drive toward and past the cameraman. A driving sound test shows the viewers what pedestrians will hear when you are driving down the street and the engine is under load.
It still surprises me that GM and Toyota aren't competing with the Maverick. I drove one and i was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is for its intended purpose. Call it Ranchero for nostalgia. A solar bed cover and/or roof would be a nice option too.
Can’t wait for y’all’s and Ryan’s(from driving sports tv) truck vids on the 2025 Mav!
Makes me excited for mine🎉
This is almost the perfect vehicle. I do wish it had a little more power for towing.
It has plenty of power for what it's rated for.
Just shy of 270 ft lbs of combined torque at 20 mph
I don't think Roman does any research for these vehicles.
Research schmisearch. Who has time for that. 😃
@@thomasfields2082 That's what Tommy is for
I would consider it if it had more towing capacity
Clearly didn’t sound like he did any Thank goodness for Tommy.
Seriously. Its crazy how confidently wrong he is and they almost sound passive aggressive going back and forth when Tommy corrects him lmao
We have a 2023 Lariat and love it. The Lariat has a thicker windshield that makes it much quieter. You need to put a bed liner in yours before it gets scratched up.
Booyah 👊🏽 😁 👍🏽 🇺🇸
Youll love it
I prefer a composite bed rather than paint. Are there bedliners available?
Put it in sport mode for simulated shifts.
Just want to point out can't call the Honda Ridgeline not a truck and then call this a truck. I towed a 22ft trailer 5k miles while having the bed loaded out with gen, dirtbike and ramps with a Ridgeline. I think this could pull an 18ft with bicycles in the bed...I'm curious where mpg will land when there's a towing test.
.
Towing heavy with my hybrid (2,000 lbs max) I've seen 21 and 19 mpg. Going home with an empty utility trailer I got 28.
I’m buying one of these!
Love the green 🐢🤙🏻
Name it Little Green. You had Big Green and now you have Little Green.
Have a green one coming. His name will be Froggy McTruck.
based on bronco sport but Maverick is completely different than the sport, tommy argues just to argue
I have ordered my 2025 Maverick XLT Eruption Green. Waiting on the build. Originally Dec 30th postponed to Jan 20th. Excited about getting it in.
I’m ready to see the Lobo in action man!! I can’t wait to see the 0-60 test!
There really isn’t any competition for the Maverick hybrid I have a 24 xlt hybrid also with luxury package I absolutely love it, I traded the smaller screen for the physical ac controls lol and a little less expensive too no regrets I’m getting almost 50 mpg it’s an amazing little truck without a doubt
Sport mode really tightens up the steering.
Finally! Back when the maverick first came out i was so excited to get one until I found out the maverick didn't come with AWD and the hybrid.
awd hybrid mavericks no longer cheap. But still has cheap plastic interior
Made in Mexico 🇲🇽 lol 😂 priced it with 25% tariffs lol before he got into office not joking 🙃 it would look dumb if you have one maverick 26k and another in different color 30k Same year lol 😂 just different times built
Trumps tariffs !!!!!
@@williampisano7573trump does seem dumb enough to crash the economy….. again….
@@williampisano7573he’s not in office yet
@@KeysRunThe mention of it weeks ago created a reaction and response from other Countries.
They won't necessarily wait for new tariffs to respond with price increases.
Good luck with the truck. Can't wait for more videos on it.
Test backing up a fairly steep hill when you do the Ike at close to 4k. Getting a "motor over temp" warning is something seen on fwd hybrids when warm from towing
We have a 23 Maverick hybrid. Sticker was 26K. It’s been pretty great for what it is.
I like that color it's really gorgeous. Nice to see a green vehicle you don't see too many green cars anymore😊
I believe this same color is offered on the bronco. My brother has this color on his bronco
Best all around vehicle sold today
“Horney Wombat” is now my favorite UA-cam comment of all time! lol
Roman with the zingers!
I still love my 22 FX4 Maverick. I really wish they had an AWD Hybrid when I purchased it. Hopefully this combo is reliable.
I was going to get a Maverick until my wife got a Great Pyrenees puppy and y’all know with Blaze what that means, no small trucks…lol!
Great color
They should make a 2 door extended cab with 6 foot bed. Keep the same wheelbase and overall length. Just have a more usable bed. There could be rear opening half doors to have access to the space behind the front seats.
The bronco sport body couldn’t take the extra bed/shorter cab potential loads safely. As it is ford put a bunch of engineering into a fancy brace that carries the load from the roof to the bed rails without the dorky sail panel of the Santa Cruz or 1st generation Ridgeline.
Unibody has its downsides and this is one of them.
Boggles the mind why all trucks are not hybrid, at least the lower trim models.
I agree, it's a great option for fuel economy.
I agree, but also have questions…
What about when it comes to complexity, durability/reliability? Repair ability: Cost of repair when something does go wrong with the drivetrain?
Cost of repair for brake systems that have regen built into them?
I wouldn't want the hybrid option (more to go wrong an cost)..then again I still prefer to daily drive manual transmission.
Love the family arguments!
Big Green old chevy thats what got me watching TFL
Just 2 days ago, I was gonna ask when you would get this!! Please do a Denver 100, and Gauntlet versus similar trucks. And in 1080p! Everyone got 4K computers for Christmas!
I still watch in 480p :)
I wish the new Rangers had a 6ft bed for a tradesman like myself.
The back and forth kibitzing, is funny 😀
A&W root beer was always a fun place to visit back in the day.
Never been to B&W.
Thanks fellas!! Nice initial review. 😊😊
Great color choice. Are you going to add a canopy or tonneau cover
congrats on the truck, can't wait to see you pin it against some of the tests ... pricing aside I like the green outside and new styling
That's a great tip. Thanks for sharing!
Wished it were a single cab with a 6 - 6.5 foot bed.
That can be had in a 1993 Mazda B2200 single cab pickup with a 7 ft. bed.
That cvt trans is the killer for me.
eCVT is completely different architecture.
