nafnlaus thankyou for this information.
nafnlaus I would like to first of all note that I haven’t watched the video yet due to being preoccupied with other stuff. And you’re correct in saying that I know about the origin of Greenland’s name, and I’ve done a quick lookup afterwords and the ethnology of Iceland is quite interesting. However this comment is only for comedic purposes and should not be taken seriously.
nafnlaus It’s ok, just wanted to clarify, have a good day and thank you for fighting against historical misconceptions.
Im so tired of hearing about that shit

Took me a while to sit down and watch this cause I thought it'd be riddled with false facts like most videos about us. However this was a pretty accurate.
Also if someone says they believe in elves they're most likely messing with you, I don't know anyone that believes in elves.
@Mystic hvar á vestfjörðum ólst mamma þín upp?
halló, komstu með smjörið? Það er köttur í buxunum mínum. Hatturinn minn er bókasafn.
I think maybe it’s one of those things where it’s fun to play as if there are elves but you don’t actually believe it
Here's another fact: In 1986, Iceland made their first appearance in The Eurovision Song Contest with the Gleđibankinn (or Bank of Fun in English) from the trio pop group known as Icy
I went to Iceland last year and loved it! I learned a lot of the facts you stated in your video during my week long trip, I was glad that locals were so willing to teach me about the country. I also went to the phallological museum, that was a must when I figured out it existed!
Great video! one thing tho... Icelanders are never called by their last names. The only time an Icelander hears his last name spoken is when he/she has fkt up very badly and is about to get yelled at.
Wait.. I have a question. Do names not get repeated? Like in school and even at jobs, there were always multiple Ashley's, spelt various ways, but the only way to keep it straight was the last names, or last name inital, are typically used. So I can't imagine last names aren't used in the same way other places are used since many people have the same first names. Just curious bc it seems confusing to me when you have so many Tyler's or Brittany's or Christopher's etc.
@@kuriosity5171 We do use our last names, but unlike the rest of the world our last names aren't that important.
Technically we don't really have last names. Our "last names" just show we are the son's and daughter's of our fathers.
Let's say an Icelandic man's name is Ragnar Haraldsson. Ragnar has a son and a daughter. His sons last name would be Ragnarsson and his daughters last name would be Ragnarsdóttir.
For example, we never call anybody by their last names, not doctors, teachers, nobody. Our phone book goes by our FIRST names in alphabetical order and Icelandic women never take their husbands last name after marriage, as that would just be weird considering the meaning of Icelandic last names.
I lived in Iceland from 1987-89. My dad was in the Navy and was stationed there. Remembering what it was like 30 years ago and seeing pictures of present day, I would love to go back and visit.
I LOVE ICELAND
- Lots of respect here from Finland. I'm really happy to have such an amazing neighbour country
Same to you. I have finnish cousins and we nordics are all brothers
26:20 When I married my Icelandic husband in 1996, I wanted his last name because I'm American. I've been divorced since 2004 and I wish I hadn't changed it. Most people I encounter pronounce it wrong. I get a lot of "Krist-Jansson". (They called me KJ in the Navy.) It's actually pronounced "Krist-YOWn-son", but I just say "Christianson" to make it easier.
I was so excited when this came up! I'm going to Iceland in April! Thanks so much Sam you are awesome!💜✌🏻
Oh amazing! Have an incredible time!

Ouuu...what kind of music do they create?? 🖤
@@brodielynn5273 it’s hard to put a name to it it’s kind of like folk pop/indie rock their first two albums are pretty good the third one it’s OK I wouldn’t say I hate it I do enjoy some songs but in my book their a 10 out of 10 and that’s all to it.
Fun fact: In norwegian you don't say "im in iceland", you say "im *on* iceland"
Same in icelandic :)
It's because of grammar. Similar as to why you would say an rather than a with some words.

I enjoyed this immensely - some wild and crazy times we've had here in Iceland!
We’ve been there several times and loved it every time. We always make it a point to drive around the island on the ring highway. Trying to take significant side trips to areas we missed on previous trips. The natural beauty of the land and the friendly nature of the people makes Ice Land a perfect destination.
Loved the video! Noticed that I've said probably all of those facts of my poor British friends...but mostly about the cod wars...which they don't seem to care about (or know about) lol. But as a historian I just wanted to commend you on the historical facts, job well done!
Greetings from Iceland

Reykjavik had four McDonalds when I was there in 84, 98-2000, and one in Akureyri. One was planed in Keflavik as well.
Then the US Military pulled out and the one in Keflavik was scraped.
in the west coast of Iceland there have been found fossilized tropical trees, so parts of iceland were once a part of a mainland and people say here that the west fjords and possibly the east coast are ancient and not young. There are parts of Iceland which obviously are young though.
Great Vid Sammy boi
In 1972 Reykjavik became the center of the chess world when the world championship was held there between then world champion Boris Spassky and American challenger Bobby Fischer. The furor spread beyond the chess world when Fischer's demands almost derailed the event. Even US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger got involved. Fischer later moved to, died, and is buried in Iceland.

Sam, since smoke is rising up from the sea there, it's easy to see why they didn't bother with two words one for smoke and one for steam! :D
I've actualy tasted the fermented shark! It tasted of pure ammonia... it was a bit chewey in the middle, and at first i thought, this isn't that bad... but the taste kept ramping up, until it made me gag and i had to spit it out! I couldn't swallow it!
Oldest parliament or legislative assembly in the world is most likely the Løgting in the Faroe Islands, as the Faroe Islands were Viking (thus establishing a "ting") and settled before Iceland. The first "ting" was established on the Faroe Islands in 825.

Okay, Fact 102. In the Civilization game franchise Iceland, if it exists on the map at all, makes a very important location to own. Sure it sucks as a place to place a city with little to no chance for growth and basically nothing to offer to the overall growth of your Civ, it does have one HUGE advantage. It's location. Basically a halfway point between North America and western Europe. Very useful in basically dominating the north Atlantic region. Something the Vikings inherently knew. Control this, you basically control the northern Atlantic region during the game. I bet you didn't see this coming Sam. Which brings me to my Q ( lol, a Star Trek ref ) How about a 101 facts on video/computer gaming?
