I listened to the instigator of this event when he testified. He called a stranger a pedo, ramped up the accusations, involved another group of strangers, and then retreated to stand back and revel in the chaos he had created. He then filmed himself pretending to be shocked instead of trying to offer assistance. That is who should be on trial. Classic sociopath yelling fire in a theater.

Wrong. Watch the entire thing. Nik , maybe jokingly, said I am looking for little girls, according to many witnesses. He could have walked away. I have been down that rive many times tubing. so I know how shallow it is there) That man rushed the group,, he instigated, never said a word with a crazy blank stare, could have left, and if scared, could have showed his knife and said "I will defend myself". No, he hid it and went on a stabbing spree.

It’s 60. Watch the police interview and see if it changes your mind. What would you do if you really feared for your life? He tossed the knife on the shore immediately following the stabbing, denied any involvement with the event initially, lied about all the details of the incident during the police interview. I completely agree with the verdict. If you want to see a miscarriage of justice take a look at MN supreme court’s latest self defense verdict involving knives and public transit.

You'd stab them? Serious bro? Learn non lethal self defense and learn how to de-escalate. I've witnessed situations like that before the stabbing occured and seen them de-escalated quickly without violence or done it myself. It's not a war zone. There are so many other options, and look, they're yuppie ass kids, they're not going to be a death threat in the slightest. If you fear everything sure they might, but thats your imagination and I don't get the catastrophic thinking. It's nothing like the kids I WOULD have wanted a weapon around growing up myself.
I'm not for discourse and I'm not trying to have a go at you either, but this comment section has me sighing dude. It feels like alot of people here will tell themselves anything to justify to killing people. I watched the videos, I watched the court docs, not once in that situation, did I feel like it escalated to a point where the "self defense" you are alluding too was ever necessary even if I thought those kids were dumb as hell. People saying "fuck with the wrong person" but in all honestly in my experience, its people who aren't prepared, out of their depth or have never been in those situations are the most unpredictable where other people would have not seen it worth their time. Its like a movie to them and it snowballs. Met alot of rough bastards in my time and honestly not one of them would have got a knife out, unless they wanted to go to jail.
Granted, not everyone has the ironic privelage of growing up cautious, but non lethal action needs to be essential and it can stop situations becoming way worse. Not everything is solved with a gun or a knife, especially just dealing with young assholes. If you're 50, you can walk away knowing they're naieve as hell and will learn in time. None of this "ive watched the joker so many times I think Im in a revenge flick and my time will come to teach the unsuspecting folk who cross me because the internet has got my back!"
The comments making it political too, goddamn, its sad. It really says alot about peoples fragility, and just what seems like a fear of everything and how far gone people actually are to just make something political any moment they get a chance too aswell. I just find it kind almost pathetic how unaware you'd have to be to think that in that scenario with a bunch of yuppie middle class kids around around, that you can size everyone up and think to yourself the only way out is to stab people. You know full well what a knife is going to do when you are making stabbing motions with it. So, when you do that, you need to accept the consequences that come with it. The guy here is very much learning that.

This case reminds me of something that happened to me which could easily have gone South. I had walked down this trail to go to a swimming hole I had been too many times before. It wasn’t warm enough yet to swim but I liked going there just to chill and listen to music. It was midweek during the workday so there wasn’t really anyone else around. As I made my way down the trail I noticed a backpack along with some fishing gear leaning against a tree right next to the trail. When I looked down the thickly wooded hill to my left I could see some guy wading in the creek fishing. I figured the stuff was his and just kept heading down the trail without thinking much more about it.
I eventually got to my destination, threw on my headphones and just chilled out as planned. About ten minutes later I saw some guy walk out of the woodline with a fishing pole. I immediately recognized him as the fisherman and figured he was looking to drop a line in the swimming hole as its a pretty good spot. So I just gave him a small wave of acknowledgment and nodded my head. But he continued to walk towards me and I could tell he was saying something?
So I took out my ear buds. He was young guy about 25 with long curly hair and a muscular build. Looked like he definitely worked out. Thats when he spoke to me. He asked “Hey man. Did you happen to see a backpack and some fishing gear? I left it up in the woods and cant find it. Ive got all my stuff in there. My wallet and everything.” Immediately I didn’t like the energy that was coming off of him. His question was more accusatory than anything else. So I said yeah I saw it. I described exactly what I saw, that I saw him fishing, and that it was leaning against a tree right next to the trail. He kinda looked at me for a second and said “Cool. Thanks.” Then he walked off towards the trail. He came back about five minutes later only this time he’s much more animated. He says he couldn’t find it. So im thinking how could he not find it?? I mean its right there! Only a blind man could miss it! Now I could tell he’s convinced himself that I stole it. He starts giving me the third degree. Do you live around here? What’s your name? All that stuff. So now im getting pissed. Im out here just trying to enjoy my day. This trail and swimming hole is practically my backyard and I got this stupid absent minded guy basically accusing me if stealing his stuff. Keep in mind its just us in the middle of the woods and flip phones had only recently become a thing. I dont even think there were cell towers up in this area. So I had a choice. I could tell this guy to F off and risk getting into a fight or something worse. And judging by his physique I wouldn’t have had much of a chance without any weapon. Scenario two. He walks away cursing me and eventually calls the cops. Or scenario three which would cause me to swallow my pride and check my ego a bit and walk this dumb SOB to where his gear is. Ruining my otherwise chill day. I chose option three.
So I asked him how far down the trail he went to search? And it was obvious he didn’t go far enough. I told him to follow me and I’ll show him exactly where his stuff is. Sure enough after a very long, tense and silent walk there was his stuff exactly where I said. Leaning on that tree right next to the trail. He says, “Oh. Thanks.” No apology or anything. Thats when I told him in the future he should pay closer attention to where he leaves his stuff and not be so quick to judge and accuse people. Immediately he got defensive. “I didnt accuse you!! I didn’t accuse anyone! Where the Hell did you get that from!?” I said, “You know what forget it. Im outta here.” And I split. That whole situation could have easily gone South like with these kids. And its often all about ego. Everyone seems so quick to fight these days. Rational thought is just gone.

lol- your story was not even close to the current one in any way i can see. But it was a cool story, the only thing i'd add is that = the world is not going to just mesh with the peaceful zen mode you got going in your own mind, that's vanity and thinking your special or the world circles your butt - not the other way around. you have to be like bruce lee used to say like water, adapt to the many moving parts of this world like that guy with his missing stuff, his head was slightly spaced out, no doubt and being a built muscular specimen like all body building types, they tend to think different than intellectuals and the rest, so having patience and showing the time it takes to lead someone to the right path in life, or to their lost personal items is a credit to you and is at the least what christ would want you to do - at the least. So slow your roll and give people plenty of space to prove to you - THEY ARE BAD, or are def going to f... you over then you will be good and mad, and they will be justly dealt with by yourself so relax and always remind yourself in this world you are a grain of sand on a beach just be patient chilled out and flow my friend. p.s. this case is complicated, i think the kids got that adjustment they needed, but i don't like the way he bull dogged his way over to their inflated tires looking for his phone, like they took it or were trying to hide it, and they had no choice about him bull dogging over to sniff around...that was weird and stupid, i guess your man in the woods did the same thing to you, now i'm seeing what i think you were seeing in both cases. O.k then i read your message loud and clear now, if that guy did that with you then both him and nico the russian were wrong for that much no doubt, good thing you handled it different than these kids.

Not only were you worried about vandalism of your vehicle you even had to worry that they would steal your equipment, left in shallower water & necessary for proper decompression from these dives. The sites were generally filthy with strewn trash, beer bottles and diapers. I would have helped the man look for that lost phone.
One time a guy walked up, helped himself to our (imported!) beer from an ice chest. We looked at him funny, "Hey man! Are you looking for someone?" He grinned, "Yeah! Billy told me to meet him at the campsite near the boat ramp!" "Okay, we don't know anyone named "Billy" but, ya want a burger? We've got plenty!"

He lashes out in a panic and unfortunately there is a fatality and injuries. Instead of recognizing the context, the mob are treated like the victims and the original victim gets his life thrown away.

He also went back to his group like nothing happened. That’s not normal. There’s so much imbalance in the comments here and in the broad commentary about this. If you were in his place, would you not have at least threatened the group with the knife first? The normal thing to do is pull a weapon out and clearly state that you will use it if the other person comes at you. It seems he just pulled it out and immediately started stabbing. What an insane disregard for human life! Y’all! TAKING A HUMAN LIFE IS HORRIBLE! It looked like he harassed them and accused them of stealing a phone, and then they retaliated by insulting him. So, it seems like you're blaming the victims. Ultimately, the smart move is typically to try to end the interaction when someone is acting in an aggressive manner out of the blue. But that doesn't mean it's the teens' fault that they were assaulted. It's natural for people to be upset when they're harassed and wrongfully accused of stealing. Expecting perfect behavior from victims in the face of being mistreated by a bad actor is unreasonable.

      list of the facts:
He approached this group, got into their personal space first, grabbed their tubes, and dropped his own damn snorkel because he had both hands on their tube.
They told him to leave multiple times before anyone had touched him. He just made creepy faces and refused to go on his way.
He brandished his knife and had it in his hand before anyone touched him.
You can’t see it in the video, but he did hit one of the girls before he was pushed into the water, as evidenced by her sunglasses being on her face just a moment prior and then missing when she comes into frame again. THAT’S when they started yelling at him and pushed him into the water.
This is when he sliced up the first guy’s stomach (in the orange shorts) and disemboweled him.
He then stabs the girl in the bikini in the back, when she wasn’t even facing him.
At this point people realize he is going on a stabbing spree and begin to run away. Instead of him doing the same (if he was truly afraid for his life), he stabs/disembowels 3 more of them, killing one.
Then he calmly walks away as if nothing happened, discards the knife in the trees (conscious knowledge of guilt and disposal of evidence), and then walks to the opposite side of the river to rejoin his group.
He did not try get help, for himself or any of his victims. Instead he convinced his group to continue their float down the river and left the victims for dead.
After getting out of the water, he changed his clothes to disguise himself and then lied multiple times to police, because he didn’t know there was video of the encounter.

Nic was told not to look for the phone, he was on the wrong side from where it was lost. Only one guy from his crew called 911 or gave aid to the VICTIMS! Are we living in bizarro world now?
He approached this group and got into their personal space first. He grabbed their tubes, and dropped his own damn snorkel because he had both hands on their tube.
This guy is an absolute psychopath, and no matter how loudly those kids were yelling at him, he initiated this encounter, refused to leave their space, and drew his weapon before anyone had touched or threatened him.
