I worked at a hobby store when conflux was new. Boss called me to tell me start charging $4 for path to exile instead of our usual $0.50 for uncommons. Crazy good card.
All the red on this list makes a lot of sense. Red gets a lot of good common removal since that's the slot they typically put Lightning Bolt variants in. Usually a Shock or a Lightning Strike that turns into Lightning Bolt if you're running the sets gimmick or new mechanic. It's kinda hard to produce bad Bolt variants.
That last part. I mean, even Open Fire is good in limited. Not relevant for a list like this, but still helps demonstrate the deal with Bolt.
@@sammysammyson There's definitely some duds though; usually when they do a 1-2 damage + set mechanic spell in that slot. There's a couple that work (usually because the set mechanic increases 1-2 damage to 3-4 if a condition is met like Galvanic Blast, or makes a more 3-4cmc card cost 1-2cmc instead like Skewer the Critics), but for the most part, the majority of the small direct damage spells are just a straight 1-2 damage plus a 'bonus' for 3+cmc that usually isn't worth the mana. You just remember the good ones even though in reality they're the minority. It's very rare to get enough damage for the cost, or another bonus effect/cost reduction/damage increase to make up for it being more expensive in the first place.

If Prismatic Ending counts, it might make the list pretty soon.
I think Prismatic Ending might be a little lower since its only a year old and skipped the lower power formats where it would have amassed a huge number of points. Even though its a staple of modern and legacy it's too young to let those formats carry its score.
There's no doubt in my mind that Ending should count since it's pretty singlehandedly responsible for screwing Vials.
Ending counts as 1 cmc everywhere but the pile as It is Cast I believe
if Dismember counts, there's absolutely no way Prismatic Ending doesn't lmao
@@piper964 It’s very limited if you can cast it with a mana value of 1 and is basically only good for blowing up Vial (mana value 1) or Chalice (mana value of 0 while on the battlefield). I think the fact you can pay more mana to exile a more expensive target disqualifies it from the list. Sure, you can pay 2 or 3 mana for Dismember but it kills the same things it would if you just paid 1.
Have you ever done a top 10 for all cards in the game (not counting basic lands)?

I assume the list would just be made up of the 10 og duals since they've had so much time to score and are in every deck in vintage and legacy (except for niche cases like aggro-shops, dredge or the occasional monocolor)
Something like 'Top Ten utility lands' would be really cool, wasteland etc
Idk, dual lands are definitely the best, but they're only in a couple formats. Fetches might be higher up since they're legal in more tournaments. It would definitely be a cool top ten.
I can see the argument of fetches being legal in modern, a list would likely feature the most popular duals at the top (volcanic island i guess) while less popular ones would be replaced by fetchlands. If nizza were to make a top ten lands I think he'd exclude them for the sake of diversity because just counting down 5 duals and 5 fetchlands doesn't make for an interesting video. I think a video taking a look at why certain combinations are so much more popular than others could be more up his alley
After you made the comment that there is only one red spell in the top 5. I instantly thought what else could it be? I knew it would at least have Lightning Bolt, Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and Fatal Push, but I couldn't think of another 1 cmc removal spell that compares to those. So the Dismember threw me off. I see where your coming from tho! Another great video keep up the good work! 🔥
I remember using Path to Exile a few times on my own tokens because I was short on land

@@yesim8508 Everything on this list is specifically creature removal, what I was talking about is removal that specifically says "nonland permanent". It would be a very different list, unless I am missing something?

Okay, top ten idea: Top ten cards that have never not gotten a point, meaning they've always gotten a point from the beginning of the game. (Much like what was said about swords and bolt. Maybe exclude power nine, or give them the number 0 spot collectively.)
I play a heartless hidetsugu mono red burn deck in commander, focused on damage multipliers. Chain lightning and stuffy doll is one my favorite combos in it.

Seeing this list makes me think about what a cantrip list, or one mana cantrip list, would look like. Cards like Opt and Gitaxian Probe would be there, but I wonder what other ones are there
Ponder, preordain, serum visions come to mind, as well as thought scour, maybe sleight of hand. I can generally say how powerful they are, but their legality affects their point totals. Arcum's Astrolabe is technically a cantrip, even though it is an artifact, and that card is really good. It has been banned in several formats for making decks too consistent in their mana.
Also, dismember having more points than StP is insane. And speaking of StP, today was the first time I noticed the castle in it's art (probably the castle that have the moat).
This list gave me an idea, do a top 10 cards. Literally just the 10 cards with the most success

Dismember is a fair add. I only ever think about casting it for more against aggro decks, and I usually just pay the life (or don’t even have the mana to do so). As far as I am concerned, it’s 1 mana removal. Awesome and unsurprising to see bolt at one. It is the king!
My personal favorite one mana removal spell is preety bad, but i love it so much. Vendetta is one of those cards that most people dont even know exists and i like surprising people with it in my deathsshadow deck.

I don’t know if it’s ever been mentioned. It probably has. You should consider doing a top 10 highest scoring cards based on your scoring system.
I like tragic slip better than fatal push personally, but maybe that’s just because I have never played competitively. I wonder how blizzard brawl does competitively, seems like a nice one mana removal for mono-green

Cards, that are good, but most of their points are from reprints and see no or very little play in modern or historic due to power level or better version

How far away is unholy heat and prismatic ending? I know these are really new, but I've been seeing them nonstop on modern and legacy
Path and Swords are by far the best imo
I agree. Lightning Bolt is way overrated, as there are a massive amount of creatures it can't remove. It has the advantage that it can do damage to a player or planeswalker (so, a separate ability) and that it is reprinted often.
The times of REB/Pyroblast being SB cards are long gone.

MTG's most iconic removal spell is Lightning Bolt, released in the 1st of the game. Yugioh's most iconic spell is Raigeki, which translates to lightning bolt, also released in the 1st set.
Coincidence? Yugioh was inspired by MTG so...

I’m surprised Unsummon missed this list. And no offense, but putting Dismember on here is silly. The card costs 3.
In practice no one ever pays 3 for it and paying 3 doesn’t make it better (like, say, Prismatic Ending).
Fun fact, I am actually a 1 mana removal spell on Saturdays. I am easily the best removal spell, so good that I am actually #1 on "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)". I'm just that good.

Did you add discard to your analysis? Thought Seize is a 1 mana removal since your choosing what they discard
I assume that was excluded along with counterspells since there are a lot of functional differences between that and removing a thing from play, even though literally speaking both are also types of "removal."
Removal specifically refers to eliminating something from the battlefield somehow.
you should have excluded damage spells and made a separate list for burn.
I have done burn. Not all burn is removal, and not all red damaging removal is burn, so it gets complicated.

I understand your grading system, but I still feel strongly that you missed a really good removal spell, “tragic slip” is one of my favorite removals, especially in sack decks. One black mana for -1/-1, But it has morbid and gives -13/-13 instead. If you can Kill just one creature it is worth it’s weight in gold
Seeing Bolt with over 500 points makes me wonder. Whats is magic current top 10 cards Evers. No restritions, just a pure Power top 10.
Lands would dominate but I guess he could group them so it's not half basics.

@@NizzahonMagic 1 black + one card is bad? #9 costs 1red + card and it only affects creatures, bone shards can be used against plainswallker, so bone shards is a little better isn't it?
My suggestion for episode 500. Top 10 cards. No qualifiers, just the 10 cards with the most points in your system
It would probably be mostly cards that are viewed as "just okay", but get reprinted often. Things like Negate, Duress, Unsummon etc etc

It's technically removal, I do think that red burn spells should have been excluded since there are times where they can't remove anything or are just used to the face. Might have had to change it from Removal to something else to fit but a lit full of stuff like Fatal Push that outright destroys, exiles, etc would have been more interesting

If you’re playing red in modern and aren’t running 4 bolts you’re doing it wrong. The perfect red deck (without restrictions) would be 20 mountains and 40 lightning bolts.
Dismember? Wait, does that count, technically 3 mana, if that doesn't count, then Swords of Plowshare.

I feel lied to. I was lost as to how I could possibly forget one of the top 2 cards, and it turns out, you cheated. While I see where you're coming from, I don't think it belongs on this list.

You should say "mana of color." Pretty sure the term "colored" is offensive.
1:34 You say you excluded color-hosing removal as they "weren't capable of removing enough creatures in enough situations"...but if they got enough points at a high level of competitive play to have made it on the list, surely that proves they absolutely are capable enough of removing enough creatures in enough situations to warrant a spot in competitive tournament deck...right? Otherwise the deck wouldn't be playing them. I understand how sometimes you remove certain groups of things (like not counting mana dorks on the creatures with tap abilities list as they already had their own list and mana abilities are their own thing in the rules with extra baggage to normal tap abilities), but this exclusion really doesn't feel warranted. If competitive decks are playing them as they offer a big enough reason to play them (i.e. they're capable of removing enough creatures that get in their way in enough situations) that inherently disproves your reason for wanting to exclude them in the first place.
Also it's strange to include DIsmember, when it's a 3-mana spell where the mana you actually pay is reduced. Does this not make Blasphemous Act and Skewer the Critics also "1-mana removal" according to this rule? Hell, any instant/sorcery could be reduced via things like Goblin Electromancer, so surely any card that only has one color pip could be included under the "It can be reduced and you only need to pay 1 in reality" rule?
Comparing it to Goblin Electromancer and the like is not the same thing at all. Dismember is most frequently cast for 1 mana, and it is done without any assistance. It does its thing internally.
@@NizzahonMagic You cannot search for it with a Spellseeker though, therefore it is not 1-mana removal. It's 3-mana removal that you can discount. That was my point about Electromancer. Lots of spells are cast for less than their actual cost in games; it doesn't make the actual card have a different mana value to the one it has though. Even on the stack, Dismember is a 3-mana card; in all zones, at all times, Dismember always costs 3. Much like cards cast with Electromancer. Paying some of that cost with life didn't make the card 'cost less' as a mana value; you just paid some of the mana with life. You're still paying the 3 mana cost though. Skewer the Critics legit makes the card inherently cost less to cast it, Dismember doesn't. The only way Dismember would legit cost 1 generic is if you don't need to pay the other 2 Phyrexian mana. But you do need to pay 2 Phyrexian mana + 1 generic, which totals to 3, not 1.
Fireblast is better. 0 mana. Kind of. Not really.
