Sorry, the reality was quite different. At that time, you stood in one place all day doing monotonous tasks. The work was usually dirty. You often got pulled into overtime. I'm hearing the Hawaii 5-0 theme music (a surf rock song called "Washout" or "Breakout" or something), and I see that black 4-door Mercury barreling up to the crime scene way too fast, come of a screeching halt, and Jack Lord jumps out before the car stops rocking on its suspension. 😁

When I was young, dad had a 1968 Mercury Monterey, 4 door, hardtop, powder blue, 390 2bbl, C6 transmission. I loved that car. I loved the ride and tested it's limits a few times. I buried the speedometer a few times during the time when 55mph speed limit was strictly enforced. i never got caught by Utah's state troopers going that fast but did receive once or thrice going 75 - 85 earning en0ugh points to have my driving privileges put on probation. I remember once when i was doing 58mph one of Utah's finest pulled along side me and hollered over the PA that "THE SPEED LIMIT IS 55 NOT 58!" i slowed down to 55 and he slowed also and pulled behind me and followed me for almost 30 miles. i was a white knuckled Nervous Nelly until he finally exited the freeway. I love Mercury cars. My current baby is a 2004 Lincoln LS, 3.0L V6 and 5 speed automatic. I bleed Ford blue. Ya, ya, I know the 2001 - 2007 LS and T-Birds are closet Jags, but they were built when Ford owned Jaguar and Land Rover.

Yes, if you live in Colorado, Horsepower and cubic inches are a thing. When I was a teenager my Dad ordered A Matador from AMC from the factory. It was loaded with options (thanks Mom) Reclining seats, 360 V-8 , positraction rear-end etc... I drove it to my Homecoming and Prom in '76 and '77. It was a beast. I used to see Denver area police cars that used Matador's. They were basically smaller full size cars back then. You could jam a couple of perps in the back seat and still accelerate like crazy. It was an Orangish-metallic cover with no vinyl roof (Dad thought those were stupid). The seats were also orange as well as the carpet. It was a beautiful car inside and out. We had some issues with the Air-conditioning compressor, but that was about it.

Had a Holley 780 dual line vacuum secondary carb laying around so I cleaned it up, rejetted it to feed around 400 cubic inches and put on his 390. The difference was so stark it caused him to remark “ the truck was a school teacher with the factory carb, now it’s a porn star!”. You know, I need to thank you, Adam, for clueing me into the whole "build quality" thing ... not the easy stuff, like interior quality, but the whole 3mm gap thing. I don't know how many more cars I'll buy at this stage of my life, but however many there are, they are going to have decent build quality 😀

Fantastic score Adam ! These Mercury Park Lanes in your collection ( all of them ) are outstanding cars, built back when quality meant something. Now you have two McGarret specials. Do you know what color interior was used in the T.V. show car ? I believe that they were 390 C.I. cars but to have two 428 C.I. cars is no small miracle considering the small production numbers you quoted. I had to laugh at your reference to the Park Lanes as your " twins " as that is the same language used by the fellow I bought my 1991 Ford Crown Victoria LX wagon from when I pulled in to his driveway with my 1987 Ford Crown Victoria wagon. They are both of similar colors, the 1991 being Pastel Alabaster ( off white or pale tan ) and the 1987 being Sand Beige or ( tan ). The 1991 is my summer wagon and the 1987 is my winter wagon. Congratulations on you dual purchase.

Another great video Mr. Wade. Your video’s have given me a newfound appreciation of the clean lines of the 1968 Ford Motor Co. products. If only the 1968 Ford Lineup would have not used reflectors instead of illuminated rear side marker lamps. Same for the 1969 Chrysler Corp. line up.

I have been waiting for this video -- I love seeing these two cars side by side, and having your compare them. And if I HAD to pick, I'd take the one with the red interior.

Well done, Adam. Both stunning vehicles and really well cared for. My preference is the black/gray interior. Subtle elegance.

Black on Red. It is the original color, electric front seats, the red interior is beautiful, and the extra side molding looks great.

I love 60s Mercs so much. Mom had a 68 Mercury station wagon with the 428-4v , plenty of power and torque.

I grew up with a 1966 Meteor Montcalm station wagon, with a 428-4V engine and a three-speed "Merc-o-Matic" automatic transmission. What I remember, once I became a teen with a driver's license, was that there wasn't much on the road that could catch it. It was also surprisingly fuel efficient: around 17 miles to the Imperial gallon in the mountainous terrain of BC.
Someone in my home town also had a 1966 Meteor Montcalm convertible, pale yellow with a black interior and top, same engine, and a 4-speed manual shift on the console. It was gorgeous. I was seven years old in 1966, I drooled over the convertible, and asked my parents why we couldn't have one instead of the wagon. I don't remember them answering. 😁
