Kevin is a classically trained Cellist. At some point in his younger days he actually auditioned for Yo Yo Mah. That is how Pentatonix found him by his You Video when he was Cello Boxing.
I've watched this like 100 times, it never gets old! But I I had been wishing Kirsty would've gotten a bigger solo, but I just realized that her role here was to serve as the glue between the cello and the rest of the vocals. I now hear her through out the song weaving in and out. We hear Scott typically doing that in other songs, here she is brilliant! It shows how dynamic this group is!

I've noticed that they tend to bring Kevin's Cello ("Beyonce") in when it seems as if they can't cover all the parts by themselves. So he fills in a part in the background, or jumps in when there are too many important factors to be covered, and he can help. And, technically, acapella means NO instruments of any kind, for any reason - they rarely use it, so it's "allowed" by most of their fans and peers.

He's played since he was 8, is a Master Cellist and actually has the musical term "Cello Boxing" named after him, as he's one of the rare humans on the planet who can Beatbox and play Cello at the same freaking time. Still not conceding these guys are human, but we'll go with it. You should check out some of Kevin's solo work, he's pretty amazing. This was sick, they absolutely killed this song, I try to hear the original and now I can't, it's been replaced like so many others that PTX get their vocal cords on. ❤️

My expectations are incredibly high and yet they manage to exceed them to the point of wondering what just happened while your brain is melting lol This performance was sexy, in the most respectful way, and they are straight FLEXING! ❤
They're currently up for another Grammy. It's for last year's Christmas album, Holidays Around the World. They so deserve it & it would be Matt's first one!!!! Also, they are in the new Eddie Murphy Christmas movie, Candy Cane Lane!!!

Pentatonix has told their fans before that occasionally they will use an instrument because it supports a certain effect and delivery of the song. They have also said that when they do that, it will be noted publicly in the liner notes via whatever medium that the song is released through. It's rare. Extremely rare. But yes, occasionally they will use an instrument.

Fully agree with your comment about needing to listen to their videos multiple times in order to catch (mostly) everything. I need at least 3 times. Once for the overall impression, at least once more to focus on the arrangement and background vocals, and one for KO's vocal percussion performance (beatboxing IMO understates what he does).
