    You should take a look at the spyglass app, it is very useful, and intriguing, and has some other useful features. Without telling my age, way back when we didnt have phones or gps units, I carried a compass and an assortment of maps. Topo 1:150000 scale, and a sectional aeronautical map, higher scale with a little less accurate map position due to the scale, but effective enough. I was a paramedic, and we had a call in the swamp. I could hear on the radio, our dispatch trying to get the helicopter to us, but i knew the bayou he was telling them was not where we were. So i pulled out my compass and aeronautical chart, and figured the co-ordinates that was about 300 feet off target, but the pilot was still awestruck to how close the co-ordinates were to the middle of nowhere. Yes the old tried and true is reliable.

    Also, the magnetic North Pole is moving, so the adjustment changes slowly. It’s changed a few degrees in recent decades. So make sure to keep your declination up to date each year or so.

      Correct, you should always look at the date in the map. Also, the drift seems to be speeding up over the past 50 years. Thanks for the comment

    Good stuff. For part II might be useful to talk about how to set declination on magnetic compass as many get confused by adding or subtracting the degrees. I like to remember, West is Best = add and East is least = subtract. then also have to consider declination changes with time and need to account fo the age of the map. Happy Adventuring

    • @OutsideChronicles

      Each map and chart is different, however, in my experience most maps are aligned to true north. The only exceptions I have seen are with orienteering maps. The map should have the declination noted or a compass rose with true north on the outside and magnetic north on the inside. Are all Top Maps lat/lon and UTM lines set for true north or magnetic north? Why don't they have an option to re-orient to magnetic north so folks could use a compass without declination adjustments.

    • @OutsideChronicles

      Most commercial maps are oriented to true north. Orienteering maps are drawn to magnetic north. You can actually draw your own magnetic north lines using a protractor.

    In order for iPhone true north function to work, location services also must be turned ON and the compass app allowed to access location in addition to turning ON the "use true north" feature ...correct?? I would assume without location services ON the phone cannot calculate the declination. Your thoughts....

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles 3 роки тому

      Great question! The iphone compass uses a magnetometer sensor (i.e. a magnetic compass). The location services are only needed if you want the Compass App to also display your Latitude and Longitude. The compass app still works with Location Services off.

    • @proengineering661
      @proengineering661 3 роки тому

      @@OutsideChronicles Thanks for responding....I realize that the iPhone compass will be able to read magnetic north anywhere without location services turned on, but as you point out, declination must be known to determine true north....correct? Thus, for the phone to display true north it must know where it is geographically.....I think the phone determines where it is using cell towers or GPS or both....and maybe it uses this info. without turning on location services for true north display....but if you are in a remote area with no cell service or GPS reception...and thus no location services....how can the phone calculate true north....that is gist of my question......your thoughts....

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles 3 роки тому

      @@proengineering661 Ahh, I missed that. You are correct that it will need to know location to lookup the correct declination. My guess it will use the last known location to calculate if location services are off. I have not really tested that feature. I guess the moral of the story is to still use a map and compass. The map for your location should have the declination and I use a compass where I can set the declination rather than mentally calculating each time. I personally would not rely on the iPhone compass app for serious navigation.

    • @OutsideChronicles

      North on a map is true north. The north on a map points to the north pole where all latitude lines converge. Magnetic north drifts at a rate of up to about 9 miles per year and has actually increased to 30 miles per year. earthsky.org/earth/magnetic-north-rapid-drift-blobs-flux

    The problem with electric compasses is they need constant recalibration. To do so you must wave it with a dead cat over your head in a figure eight pattern. You won't know if it's correct or not. But, you won't deserve to. If you're going to use a smart phone, just use the darn GPS. The phone would need that and data to look up your declination anyway. If you already know your local declination, just allow for it. If you don't, why are you even using a compass?

      True North is the same no matter where you are on the planet. Magnetic north differs depending on location (i.e. declination) and the magnetic field is not the same everywhere on the planet. Finally, magnetic north drifts over time.

    My advice is not to rely on an iPhone compass when doing any serious navigating while out walking in the wilderness. I own three iPhones for different reasons and each gives a slightly different reading for both True North and also Magnetic North. Much safer to buy and use a good quality magnetic compass and adjust for magnetic declination in whatever area you are in.
