just only now stumbled onto this video, terrific haul.........my favorite is the red mtn. #7......... i have one handed down from my mom but it has a crack near the handle and i found that out by starting a kitchen fire while frying fish at a hundred year old warehouse, timber framed with fat lighter heartpine, in downtown atlanta, whew!!! even though i snuffed it "pdq" i still considered it a very very close call and am rather careful about what and how to cook with it.....y0ur video content is well regarded by many and we are always happy to hear from you.............
I saw someone comment on one cast iron cookware forum about he felt, jokingly, that BS&R skillets must have been made from battleship plating, because they were so tough and almost never warped. :) I saw a warmed BS&R dutch oven once, possibly the only time so far I've seen a warped pan from that maker.
I love this guy. His passion for cast iron became mine also. I got into cast iron because I tried to sear a steak with a nonstick pan. He’s been quiet for a while. I hope he’s doing well. God bless him.
Another excellent video. Pretty sure I'm hooked on CI cooking. It just makes sense. I'm on the west coast and have been hunting for several month now. It seems like prices swing pretty dramatically from place to place.
It's hard to say if it's good or not but my guess is it's slim pickings compared to other parts of the country. I've found some very interesting pieces though. I found a #8 non marked the other day that was hammered with a single notch heat ring. I'm fairly certain it's a Lodge but it's the smoothest surfaced skillet I've seen... Obvious quality. I could talk CI all day!
It is refreshing to see someone so in tune and happily "addicted" to cast iron. I have never been able to explain my attraction to my pieces and actually thought I was a little this side of normal. Hope your foot gets better soon, I am currently battling 3 large bone spurs with a fired up Achilles tendon. Stinks.
Jeff just watched this video and I have the whole set of the BSR Red Mountain Series and to me they are my go to pans I love them. Thanks for this channel can't wait for the Mac and cheese video. Thanks buddy
I know this video is old but do you still recommend these places in Cartersville GA and Rome GA? I live in Florida and I am thinking about making a trip there.
Very good video. Appreciate the tips of where you might go as we are from far away and travel down I-75. Now we have a bit better idea where we might stop. Also appreciated your tips. Am subscribing!
I really enjoyed viewing this skillet hunt. I do pretty much the same thing. And it's thrilling to come up on such great finds as you did on this excursion. Nice shops within walking distance -- my kind of day. I would have chosen the Griswold over the Wagner as well. But there was a time I would have purchased both! LOL. I'm really enjoying your channel.
I have a BSR, and they have short handles with a smaller whole in the handle for lack of a better word. We have stores like this in Scottsdale, but I get mine from thrift shops, because I like restoring them. The uglier the better! I wish everybody could see your cast iron room! I have that photo saved on my computer, and my cell phone! You da man, Jeffrey!
Great Video. Been collecting cast iron for over 20 years. I am a Griswold snob,(LOL) but also have many other old cast iron that I collect and use. Just found your channel and love your vids. Great info.
Nice selection there! I just started collecting, and I started with pith bottom wagner. I chose it because I like their model numbers, logo, and they are not as pricey as griswold.
Jeffery, i have never watched any video like this. You have had my full attention for 9 videos and im goin to watch more.you do an excellent job with your communication and your knowlege! you have me interested to go out and start a collection of my own. I thank you, sir!
Thank you so much for your answers. I am glad you told me this, lol I read somewhere after I left these questions for you, that nickel plate will chip off. That was a big turn off. I'm trying to get away from all that crazy nonstick crap already that chips off. That's why I have decided to go back to CI, but want to learn effective ways of caring for them. I was just told though that CI isn't good for acidy foods like Chili and such. Someone told me I am better off getting one of those enamel coated CI's for stuff like that. Do you agree?
+Gina Pocan I know it's been a while but I'll give you my opinion. I've been cooking chili in a Lodge Dutch oven for 20 years. Every single time I clean up I can see where the seasoning was worn off from the acidic nature of the tomatoes and the boiling of the chili. BUT, I also dry my Dutch oven in my electric oven after washing it, and I simply coat it in oil as soon as I remove it from the oven. Once it cools I wipe up any excess oil, put a wick in the lid, and it's ready for next time. No rust using the same couple of ovens for 20 years.
I am really new at this. I have had CI before, but I never knew all this. So, what is the significance to the numbers on the skillets? I have noticed you talk about that a lot in your videos (I have seen a few already, lol). I am now a subscriber, lol
is there a site to determine the price of pans by year/logo/etc? I'm not sure what to pay for the skillets i find. I just bought 3 Large block griswold (#3,5,8) like the one in this video for $60. is that a good price?
Hello there! I found a unidentified skillet with a gate mark, heat ring, a fancy handle with a number 8 on it and the letter Y on the bottom. I was wondering if you knew what brand it might be and/or perhaps the date?
+oviedo2912 If the gate mark is in the heat ring, on the top part of the bottom of the skillet, it's a Lodge, before the started printing their "Made in the USA" skillets. But most companies have made in the USA skillets, when they first started printing names. It's around a 100 yrs old.
Love your videos. I tweaked my seasoning after watching your resto and maint video. I inherited my father's cast iron and in it is a 8" no number Mi-Pet. Great smooth surface. Ever heard of Mi-Pet?
Excellent video! I especially appreciated your "thought processes" of what you were looking for, how to compare and contrast items, etc. More, please!!!! *wag, wag, wag...*
Very informative! Thank you. Could you be a little more specific about those antique stores. My son lives down there and I would love to go on our next visit.
I think both of those two you showed last was great and I would want either one of them. The new skillets are priced out of the working person's budget and only chef's can afford them.
I have noticing edging on CI that looks like it was shaved off? Easiest to see when pan is face down. Do you ever notice this? Was wondering if it was done at production to smooth an edge or if people get crazy with wire wheels after market. Thanks!
I broke a bone in my foot back in January. Hasn't healed and has gotten progressively worse. Had surgery last week to correct the problem. They brought the broken bones together with a screw and did a bone graft with bone from my heel. So, I'm down for a while :)
+Michelle Hill The hunt does cost time and money but the hunt is part of the fun. There are worse ways to spend a day and almost all of them cost something.
Dear Sir I have redone about 10 rusted and or black carbon build up on bottom and partially on inside sides. If your stove has self clean use it place cast iron upside down full clean. When done carbon will fall off with a light tap.The rest is simple bar keepers friend Dawn soap using a green scrubby if necessary steel wool.It is fast and perfect.Only one skilket my Mother in laws black carbon smoked up house.Embarrasing never asked her about what was on the bottom.Just finished the process and gave her back a new skillet.
Melody - Funny you should ask! I am almost finished with a video in which Easy Off oven cleaner is used to clean the skillet. It should be up by Monday.
The Culinary Fanatic Oh great! I look forward to seeing it. Thanks for doing these vid's, I don't collect like you but I do love cooking in mine daily.
I just stumbled on this CI community, and I am astonished! What a wonderful group of people! I cleaned up and seasoned a WagnerWare corn stick pan according to your instructions, and it took a while, but we finally love our Lodge griddle/grill, although we haven't really used the grill. We will, though! Thanks to you, JBR, and your caring friends! I'll be checking out local thrift and antique shops for guess what as soon as my son lets me use my car. Too bad, my mother gave me an eight inch skillet, probably WW, and I gave it away because I just didn't understand. Thank you, JBR et al. You restore my faith in humanity! What do you think of the new Lodge wok? Hope the foot is better!
Hey Jeff! Can you post the name brands of skillets besides the Griswold, Burlington, and Wagner Ware, that you mentioned in this video so I can write them down and take them with me on my next hunt for cast iron!? Thank you!
just only now stumbled onto this video, terrific haul.........my favorite is the red mtn. #7......... i have one handed down from my mom but it has a crack near the handle and i found that out by starting a kitchen fire while frying fish at a hundred year old warehouse, timber framed with fat lighter heartpine, in downtown atlanta, whew!!! even though i snuffed it "pdq" i still considered it a very very close call and am rather careful about what and how to cook with it.....y0ur video content is well regarded by many and we are always happy to hear from you.............
wow...amazing video
Giant Eagle card? Reminds me of home! Love the videos!
A flat Griswold for $38.00!, that's a good find and deal. Great video, very informative
Thanks for the video
Great video
I saw someone comment on one cast iron cookware forum about he felt, jokingly, that BS&R skillets must have been made from battleship plating, because they were so tough and almost never warped. :) I saw a warmed BS&R dutch oven once, possibly the only time so far I've seen a warped pan from that maker.
You know, come to think of it, I have NEVER seen a warped BSR skillet. BSR - the smoothness of a vintage skillet with the weight of a modern Lodge!
I love this guy. His passion for cast iron became mine also. I got into cast iron because I tried to sear a steak with a nonstick pan. He’s been quiet for a while. I hope he’s doing well. God bless him.
I live in Cartersville Ga. I will have to see if this store is still around. Thanks
Thank you for all the tips!
Another excellent video. Pretty sure I'm hooked on CI cooking. It just makes sense. I'm on the west coast and have been hunting for several month now. It seems like prices swing pretty dramatically from place to place.
JCP - How is CI hunting on the west coast? Seems like things might be hard to find out there.
Thanks for teaching me!
Great videos Jeffery ! Thanks
I learn something new from every video...thanks!
Stinks.
Thanks! Ended up having to have surgery after 10 weeks in that boot. Still recovering. Get better soon!!!
Ahh 2014 prices, miss those days. Dont see those prices these days.
great series....informative and fun to watch...
Thanks!
BS&R is a lot cheaper than Griswold or Wagner. Looks and cooks just as good. I have two BS&R skillets and a Century Dutch oven.
Tysm. Great video and learned a ton
Surprisingly reasonable prices at a couple of those antique stores. Very cool finds!
Thank you! Great videps
Thanks for taking us along on your hunt Jeff.
Thanks for the info. I've learned a lot!
I appreciate the hunting tips because I have zero knowledge in this area. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of cast iron cookware.
Love this video
good info thanks
Thank You for sharing your knowledge of cast iron.
Really enjoy your videos, keep it up buddy.
Great channel, bought my first lodge cast iron skillet today.
Thank you!
Jeff just watched this video and I have the whole set of the BSR Red Mountain Series and to me they are my go to pans I love them. Thanks for this channel can't wait for the Mac and cheese video. Thanks buddy
Great video. I wasn't aware there was a CI collecting culture.
The culture has really gotten insane :)
I know this video is old but do you still recommend these places in Cartersville GA and Rome GA? I live in Florida and I am thinking about making a trip there.
LOVE ❤️ your videos. Thanks for sharing, love cast iron.
Thank you for the education on cast iron pans.
nice finds at great prices.
I enjoy your videos very much, thanks for sharing!
Very good video. Appreciate the tips of where you might go as we are from far away and travel down I-75. Now we have a bit better idea where we might stop. Also appreciated your tips. Am subscribing!
GREAT JOB, VERY INFORMATIVE , THANK YOU FOR SHARING.................HAPPY HUNTING..........
Thank you, Jeffrey. Just recently began looking for vintage cast Iron, and all hunting tips are appreciated. Where is episode 1?
I'm curious if you do lead testing on the vintage cast iron you find. Cast iron is often used for melting lead for casting.
Thank you!! :)
Awesome videos! Keep it up!
What do you mean by "hut"? Gas, drive or what?
I'm so glad I found your channel :)
Thanks for all the info. I can't believe you are in Cartersville, GA! My daughter lives there! I need to check out the antique malls there!
I have a BSR, and they have short handles with a smaller whole in the handle for lack of a better word. GREAT Video, I have several Griswold.
Great video, i love my cast iron and like you, hunt for them locally.
Great Video. Been collecting cast iron for over 20 years. I am a Griswold snob,(LOL) but also have many other old cast iron that I collect and use. Just found your channel and love your vids. Great info.

Chris Harbst - Thank you!
As a newbie to the CI world I found your video very informative.
Great post.
Thank you!
One other thing. What is with this nickle plated CI I have been seeing. They're really expensive. Are those better?
Gina Pocan - i HATE plated pieces. I have one and it never gets used.
Should I get rid of any cast iron I have that is warped?
Great video, thanks. I have a glass top stove, so I always find a piece of glass in the store and make sure it does not spin like a wagon wheel.
I am really new at this. I have had CI before, but I never knew all this. So, what is the significance to the numbers on the skillets? I have noticed you talk about that a lot in your videos (I have seen a few already, lol). I am now a subscriber, lol
Gina Pocan - The numbers refer to the sizes of openings on old stoves.
Ok. Thanks. I didn't know what to think, lol
is there a site to determine the price of pans by year/logo/etc? I'm not sure what to pay for the skillets i find. I just bought 3 Large block griswold (#3,5,8) like the one in this video for $60. is that a good price?
The quickest way is to see what the piece has sold for in the past on Ebay.
Why did you stop making videos?
Just found out my 8" BSR skillet is a red mountain series. Thank you!
Hello there! I found a unidentified skillet with a gate mark, heat ring, a fancy handle with a number 8 on it and the letter Y on the bottom. I was wondering if you knew what brand it might be and/or perhaps the date?

TEN YEARS AGO THE INFLATION RATE WAS MUCH LOWER. IN TODAYS WORLD YOU MUST TAKE YOUR HOUSE TITLE WITH YOU..
Can you tell me anything about a corn bread pan that has pagoel hech(something) mex on the bottle of it?
nice! i live in Rome!
I have noticing edging on CI that looks like it was shaved off? Easiest to see when pan is face down. Do you ever notice this? Was wondering if it was done at production to smooth an edge or if people get crazy with wire wheels after market. Thanks!
Still waiting for hunt #3. What is up?
I broke a bone in my foot back in January. Hasn't healed and has gotten progressively worse. Had surgery last week to correct the problem. They brought the broken bones together with a screw and did a bone graft with bone from my heel. So, I'm down for a while :)
Jeff I just saw your video using the oven self cleaning. You were hip to it looks like you had the same results...lol
you are the skillet master...how did you break your foot???? drop a skillet on it..LOL
Did a skillet fall on your foot?
great video... I have been hunting for Pyrex, Tupperware and now CI... You are absolutely correct about the hunt can cost you too and time.
Michelle Hill - Thank you for watching!
+Michelle Hill The hunt does cost time and money but the hunt is part of the fun. There are worse ways to spend a day and almost all of them cost something.
$38, yeah, that's expensive. I'll have to check out my antique store's prices. But I'm sure I can get one for real cheep at the flee market.
I wonder did one of your cast iron pans revolt and fall on your foot?
Damn! I thought the old mama's in Georgia go to their graves with their cast iron sets.
+SpeedyTase They would if it wasn't for one of the grandkids taking it from the casket.
The Garlic Farm I don't blame them, then!
now I don't feel so bad. there are many others with the same addiction.
I'm a new subscriber and I find your videos very informative. Thanks and keep em coming.
Great video. Very informative and fun. I think I'll go on a short hunt today!
Do you have a vid on cleaning if you don't have a self cleaning oven? I loved the "don't be a cast iron snob" :))))
The Culinary Fanatic The Easy Off video has been posted. Check it out on my channel.
No wonder you are finding so much cast iron, you are in Georgia. I just want to rebuild my CI, which somebody gave to a new homeowner.
I've never seen a cast iron pot.
I just stumbled on this CI community, and I am astonished! What a wonderful group of people! I cleaned up and seasoned a WagnerWare corn stick pan according to your instructions, and it took a while, but we finally love our Lodge griddle/grill, although we haven't really used the grill. What do you think of the new Lodge wok?
Hope the foot is better!
As a cast iron junkie too, I've really enjoyed your videos. Thanks!
Silence Seven - Thank you!
Cool! I just got my first cast iron pan. And I'll be sure to check out the yard sales for pots and pans ;)
That should say smooth bottom wagner...
Hey Jeff! Can you post the name brands of skillets besides the Griswold, Burlington, and Wagner Ware, that you mentioned in this video so I can write them down and take them with me on my next hunt for cast iron!? Thank you!
props good info i'm sprung
......soooo will you let your wife cook with your finds? I thought you buying cast iron for her? Get her a nice new set from Walmart.
I bet this kat sleeps with his skillets, pots & pans!
