- An Orthodox Jew tries to find someone to turn off an adult toy.
THE SHABBOS GOY is used with permission from Talia Osteeen. Learn more at powderkegmedia.com.
Hannah is a devout Orthodox Jew, who observes the tenets and practices of her religion, including abstaining from electronics of almost any kind on the Sabbath.
She's also a modern woman who lives in Los Angeles, the most modernist of American cities. So when a certain device of hers won't turn off, she sets out to find someone who can turn it off without violating her religion -- a "shabbos goy" outside the faith who can perform certain types of work for Jews who can't partake on the Sabbath.
Writer/director Talia Osteen's nimble, quicksilver comedy combines the bawdiness of a certain type of ribald comedy with a richly observed snapshot of how a tradition-rich religion and culture thrives in a modern setting, where diverse groups of people are nestled alongside one another but often don't deeply interact.
Like many comedies, the success of the film rests on its writing and performances, and both here have a sharp, sly eye for irony and the peccadilloes that arise when we're trying to hide things we're embarrassed, ashamed of or not supposed to do.
Hannah may be an Orthodox Jew, but she's also embraced aspects of modern womanhood, though that embrace can't exist out in the open. Yet she must find a way to reconcile these sides of herself -- a dilemma that propels her to reach out into the larger world.
That world is shot with a warm polish in the cinematography and a subtle grace in the camera movement, capturing a vision and side of Los Angeles that's warmer, humbler and livelier than most cinematic representations of the city. The visuals beautifully capture how the city is a series of hidden pockets, and Hannah goes outside of her particular enclave to solve her problem.
This leads her to Davian, a young Black man, who she enlists to help. The two likely never would have met if not for Hannah's immediate problem, but the dilemma forces them into an interaction that is both sweetly cringe-y and hilarious to watch. Actors Milana Vayntrub and Devere Rogers find a great comedic rhythm together that is true to both the wit and humor of the dialogue and the emotions of the characters. When all the elements come together in an impeccably paced crescendo of mishaps -- and Hannah's predilection comes out in the open -- it's an absolute delight of comic timing and culture clash.
Smart, witty and playful, THE SHABBOS GOY has a lightness of touch, but that sense of free spirit doesn't elide over the characters' social realities, which are deftly acknowledged in ways that don't interrupt the pleasure of the storytelling. Instead, it invents ripe comedic opportunity in playfully setting up a collision between contrasting lives and people -- and finding warmth and affection in the ways people can be there for one another, on the most basic level. - Фільми й анімація
i lived in a Jewish neighbourhood and i was the only non Jew so a lot of times my neighbours would knock on my door and dramatically be like, “oh the timer on my lights messed up so now i have to sit in the dark, if only there was a good Catholic who was willing to help me”

"And that, kids, was how I got circumcised"
This is hilarious. I love how none of the women were surprised by the vibrator.
That was brilliantly done start to finish - esp like how all that older women knew how it worked...
@Amo Rise "More like they pushed the story too much" my life experience tends to follow a similar pattern ... when it rains, it _pours_ ... which makes this story that much funnier.
Agreed. Brilliantly done.

I find it hysterical that all the women knew what it was, even the one that hadn't actually seen it.
Maybe this happens all the time.
Milana Vayntrub is a great comedic actor who should be featured more!
She's an actress.
No. She's an actor. Actress is a term that has fallen out of favour. Equality... And all that.
Her solution was a bit... unorthodox. (Ba-dum!) Thank you, I'll be here all week!

In my hospital where I worked, they were not allowed to touch the elevator buttons so the gentile passengers had to do it for them. lol.

it's funny here .. but crazy if you think about it .
@Rising Sun no. You're not supposed to worship Jews, no (not according to Judaism at least. Idk who told you that. Worship God, not people. That would be idolatry!!). The Israelites were the last people/nation that God offered the Torah to, they were God's last choice. Others didn't want to do it and the Israelites were the very last people God wanted to ask.
You make one lousy business decision...
This was so well done. I laughed harder and harder as each little scenario played out. These lines tickled me: "Well are you?", "Black?, "Jewish!" or "I've heard of the bible. Best seller."-LOL!!

But seriously, if you are not supposed to "work" on the Sabbath, wasn't all that running around more work than just flicking a switch?
It was just a plot device. No one explains how the toy got started. But electric switches are an issur de rabbanim, not from the Torah. There were obviously no electric lights two thousand years ago.

It is a common misconception that we don't use electricity because it is like fire. That is true (according to some Rabbis) about electric lights. But electric appliances aren't turned on and off becomes one is completing or undoing the building of a switch.

I have no idea why, to this point, she doesn't have one.
I'm Orthodox Jewish, and I'm laughing WAY too hard at this! It's actually pretty darn accurate. I've actually run around the neighborhood because my daughter accidentally turned on the light in the bedroom, and there was no way I could sleep with it on. I got to know a few neighbors that way, but B'H nothing so embarrassing as this!
It is a kind of occupational hazard of being orthodox...
Honestly this concept is crazy to me. I do more work breathing. But hey worship how you will.
I will never understand this mentality. Isn't it easier to "sin"...turn the light off, repent, feel sorry the situation happened and resolve to try and avoid accidentally turning lights on or off again. Better than going around like a lunatic and giving people the impression religious jews are all insane. Lets be honest. Do religious Jews act this way with other more "complicated" sins. Like lust, greed, avarice, adultery etc..... or do they just succumb to temptation, repent and try to do better next time? Idk. I'll never understand orthodoxy.
@@derkguez8590 Judaism is about works, not real faith in Jehovah God. Their religion isn't about a true relationship with God but rather God giving them commandments and they follow them to the exact tee. For Jews, works show their devotion to God.

I guess everyone has a script in their head that they feel they must make into a movie one day......
You know, this was a really great film for a lot of reasons, one of which is the fact that it was written as a short movie, rather than as the pitch for a longer film. Oftentimes, all short films are are pitches for longer films, where only a portion of a longer story is made into a film, and then is pitched as a short, in hopes that its popularity will give it the traction it needs to become a feature film. I don't fault filmmakers for doing that, but it often leaves the short film feeling unsatisfying, because the story is not finished. This, thankfully, at least very much feels as though it was written as a film short, making the ending far better written, and the movie feeling far more satisfying than the ending of most film shorts are.
