Your "do-overs" are my favorite of your videos. Most of us have something that we look back and say what was I thinking? Your inspiring videos allow us to make it right.
All my canvases need to be repurposed as I've never once did a painting I've been happy with! And I'm completely serious! 😂 Your piece certainly looks like it's transforming into a landscape. It's given me the idea to use the tape to create a stone circle similar to what we find here in Scotland. A thin transparent wash might've created a different atmosphere.
I have close to 20 canvases/wood panels with paintings I'm not happy with sitting in a corner ready to be reworked. We all have them. I love painting over ones that didn't work out the first time. They usually end up with wonderful textures and much more character. A wash is a great idea! Let me know how using tape to create the stone circle goes-love that idea!
Thank you so much, Janet! I'm so glad you found this helpful❤️ Although I'm usually drawn to painting with color, when I black with black and white I always enjoy it so much.
Thanks, Valerie! That is such a great idea! This would be perfect for those canvases. I might have to swing by some thrift shops to see what I can find.
Nice stuff going on here. Thanks for your continued sharing. Watching others always helps with recharging depleted motivation. I realize you are not using charcoal to make explicitly drawn lines in this video, but I thought I'd share something I have been enjoying lately. I apply a thin layer of Liquitex clear gesso (a recent acquisition, I've not tried other brands), which has a great, gritty texture and leaves a nice tooth for charcoal and/or soft pastel. I am then able to apply lines, then, depending upon what effect I hope to achieve, fixing those lines in various ways, such as with either a thin smear of matte medium and a palette knife, or spraying it with high flow medium in a little spray bottle. Each has a different effect. Happy holidays, and, once again, thank you for your continued sharing.
Hey Sybil! Your appreciation means a lot to me😊 I haven't played with clear gesso yet, but you've given me more reasons to give it a try. I do some art where I use charcoal, graphite and pastels for lines, so this sounds right up my ally for something new to play with. Thank you for the suggestion!
Thank you so much, Kelly! I think you're going to have a good time trying this out. I've picked up fun little techniques with each one of these repurposed paintings.
@@chrisloudart Please keep the videos going. You have a God given talent, a natural talent that feeds the soul of every artist who aspires to be as creative and talented as you are. Chris, I’ve watched many art teachers over all these years and many of them have great technique to share, but Chris…no one compares to you. No one stands out the way you do, you simply have a rare and special gift that feeds the soul of every artist who watches you. We all owe you deep gratitude for all that you give to us. Thank you for sharing your gift and knowledge. ❤️
Thank you deeply for your incredibly kind words. I'm truly grateful for your support and encouragement. It's a wonderful experience interacting with such an amazing artist community.
Off hand I'd say you're in good company with Francisco Goya, 1819 to 1823 the black paintings. Ad Reinhardt who after 1953 painted only black canvases. Pierre Soulages abstract french painter who for more than 40 years painted only black canvases he died at 102 years old Oct 26 2022.
Thanks, Nicole! That is quite flattering, but I'm not sure I'd go that far. Thanks 🙏 for bringing Soulages to my attention. I was unfamiliar with him, but have been going through some of his artwork and ❤️ LOVE it! Makes me want to readjust my day and focus on black and white.
Thank you for sharing. Great ideas for mark making. I like the final result. I do love the greys, but whenever I try it I end up putting a colour spot in at the end. I just can't help it 🤷🏼♀️😉
Thank you, Brigit! I agree-it is difficult to not add a splash of color. Luckily on these I had just enough bits of the underpainting color peeking through (not easy to see on the video) to satisfy that need.😊
Hey Barbara! Great question. Normally yes, I would fix the charcoal before I started adding more paint. Since I was playing and wanted to be able to manipulate the charcoal as I went, I didn't fix it until I felt it was finished.😊

You definitely colour outoside the lines!!!🤗🙃 Thumbs up!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job Chris. Love how you kept going to get something you were happy with.
Thanks, Jen! This was a fun one to tinker around with.
I love repurposing old art! The old paintings were cool, too though.
Thanks, Cassandra! You really can get some great textures and new creations from reusing old art. So much fun!
Its my favourite orientation also. Cheers from Tasmania!
Hey Howling!😊 Thank you. Cheers from Colorado!
I think this is a brilliant tutorial on how to make an expanse of black look interesting. As I beginner found it really inspirational
Thank you so much, Janet! I'm so glad you found this helpful❤️ Although I'm usually drawn to painting with color, when I black with black and white I always enjoy it so much.
Watched it again. Still find it inspirational. In fact, I am enjoying working with just black and white
Like it…it feels like an urban scene
Thanks, Denise! I agree, it definitely has an urban look to it.
Really enjoy watching you create these pieces. More of these please 🙏
Thanks, Steven! I enjoy creating them!🎨
love this idea, i always look for canvases at thrift stores
Thanks, Valerie! That is such a great idea! This would be perfect for those canvases. I might have to swing by some thrift shops to see what I can find.
Yes! The paint DOES shoot out! Unfortunately i like that part!, I need to grow up i think!
😂😂😂 Nah! No need to grow up!
Bonjour Chris ❤❤❤ oh c'est superbe Chris ❤❤❤❤ merci à vous ❤❤❤

Loved watching this develop. I would have stopped in a few places, but loved your perseverance.
I think I will try the charcoal and water.
Thanks, Linda! Just have to keep going along until something presents itself on the canvas. I think you'll enjoy it😊
Love this approach! Thanks for sharing I think the series is beautiful!
Thanks so much, Karen!
Inspiring. Thank you.
Thanks, Farina!
Very interesting to watch the process-like it! Thanks for sharing🌻
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. Love this idea and my favorite orientation is the same as yours.
Hey, Peggy! Thank you so much!❤️
Hi Chris. Like what you did. Thank you for sharing ✨️
Thank you, Grozda!❤️
I enjoyed that, almost as fun as painting ❤
Thanks, Keren! I'm so glad you enjoyed it😊
Very cool Chris. You are the best teacher, I’ve learned so much watching your videos. Thank you!
Thank you for such a kind comment, Susie! I'm so thankful for all of the positive feedback I receive-it all inspires me to make more videos.

I like this piece! I have been trying to get my husband to paint with me. He might just try something like this.....
Thank you! I'll admit-it's pretty fun 😊
You calm me. Thank you! 🙏🏽

Like this amateur artist quite a few canvases that I’m not happy with great stuff
Thank you, Kendo!
Love it!!!! ❤
Thank you, Syl!😊
Great tips. Is it possible to paint over a canvas when it has been varnished?
Thanks Susie! I haven't had any issue painting over a varnished canvas. I think most people would tell you its fine.
Thanks!
Merci beaucoup! I really appreciate this kind gesture!❤️
GREAT ❤
Thank you, Mieke!
You need a strong imagination to see this as a painting, I would add red geometric shape
Well, then here's to strong imaginations!😊
Don’t you need to fix the charcoal layer?
Hey Barbara! Great question. Normally yes, I would fix the charcoal before I started adding more paint. Since I was playing and wanted to be able to manipulate the charcoal as I went, I didn't fix it until I felt it was finished.😊
I end up cutting a tube in half and using my fingers
I love painting with my fingers!👍
Ye, this video is interesting, there are many ways to make art!
Thank you! Yeah, so many we'll never get bored.😊
@@chrisloudart true I try to do the same :)
Basically no idea what you are doing. But guess you are having fun.
Pretty much just that-having fun and playing with charcoal on a used canvas.😊
