I remember seeing Faith No More (or Mr Bungle, something Mike Patton) and they had a really weird Japanese band called “Melt Banana” opening. The crowd was not happy, and I remember a guy yelling “go home!”. The Japanese girl singing said “Why you say go home, we Melt Banana, we make you happy!”
Melt Banana are japanese national treasures. Such an underrated fucking band. It has a totally different vibe of music than most metal groups. Happy, creative, noisy, high pitch vocals used as a percussive instrument, so much cool stuf happening. But i also can't say that i like all of their albums
If it’s the tour I’m thinking of it was Melt Banana opening for Mr. Bungle on their Disco Volante tour. I saw them here in San Diego and dug the whole night. I was on a bunch of Acid and had best time.
I saw The Melvins open for Gwar in '92 (with Tool as the first opener) & the same shit happened. The crowd started chanting "Gwar" and "Too Slow" 10 minutes into their set. Buzzo said "so we're playing too slow for ya?" & the band proceeded to play super SUPER slow to piss off the crowd, and played slower & slower as the crowd got more & more pissed. Sucked not getting to see their regular set but it's hilarious in hindsight.
Oh yes I experienced the same thing on that tour.Must have been a fairly common occurrence, shame cause I love the Melvin's and was excited to see them.
@@fungus_am0nguz644 oh I know that, I remember that year almost fondly, it’s just wild to think about that now, knowing what I know has happened to all those bands.
I met the Melvins in the parking lot after a Stone Temple Pilots show. They were super nice, gave autographs and their backstage passes so my friend and I went to the after party.
I remember seeing white zombie circa 1996, Rob jumped on a monitor, slipped off, landed on his back and the mic went flying. The vocals however, continued. That was the last time I'd pay to see rob zombie.
The suck started after La Sexorcisto. Saw them on that tour in '92 with Monster Magnet. What an amazing show. Seeing Melvins and WZ in '95 you could tell the effects of the huge blow up. Lost me from there as they ended up being just another meathead/fratboy MTV rock band.
The only thing sadder than once seeing the Melvins booed off stage in a 15,000 seat arena was once seeing the Swellvins, a Melvins tribute band, booed off stage in a club full of 50 people.
The Melvins had no business playing a 15,000 seat arena. They're a niche, acquired taste; always have been, always will be. If you attempt to ignore reality and promote them like a a band that could sell a 15,000 seat arena, that's what happens. Hubris.
I remember seeing The Melvins open for this high school marching band, and The Melvins were booed out of the high school halftime show. It was very sad. I also saw them get booed out of a Lutheran Church in Akron, when they opened for the organ player.
In the mid 90’s thru late 90’s there was a lot of poser making actors popular instead of respecting real musicians. I’ve seen it because I was a teenager during those times, and always a fan of Melvins.
@@carlospayan5638 was going to say the same thing. I was about 16 at that time and I remember all the cliques that jumped on the bandwagon because of how popular the music was at that time. Precisely the reason so many assholes did so much damage during those years.
Because they sucked. I saw the show in Houston, I'd never heard of the Melvins but I heard them suck. I'd never heard of Babes in Toyland either and I heard them not suck. Everyone I talked to agreed that the Melvins sucked.
Houdini is pretty shitty compared to most Melvins records, but that was intentional. They were being promoted by Kurt Cobain and it was their first major label release, so Buzzo went more commercial. Houdini was, by FAR, their most heavily-promoted album. So most people, being told to like it, consider it their best.
I worked in the studio in the late 90s with Buzzo, I was a second engineer, just learning, and Buzz was totally cool, and treated me like we were old friends even though he didn't know me, I became a bigger fan.
I’m all for people being able to have their own opinion, but this is an objectively stupid statement. If you “suck”, you don’t typically have labels lining up to release any of your 7,000 full length albums. Bands that “suck” typically don’t get to have a career playing music for 40 years without a single commercial breakthrough hit. These guys have played more shows and released more material than your three favorite bands combined. But, yeah…they “suck”.
@Morgan Smith they're a legendary band, pioneers in Sludge Metal and Grunge... Sure Buzzo can seem like a major asshole, but that has no bearing on their importance in music
“Here’s our new song called 30 Minutes of Feedback.” “…with Buzzo just improvising lyrics about how stupid the crowd was.” Buzzo is a goddamn national rock n roll treasure.Melvins has been in my top 10 favorite bands for 25 years. I’ve always enjoyed hearing him shut down the Kurt Cobain fetishists too.
Later that year Ramones were opening up for White Zombie and the crowd booed them during their entire set. It pissed me off, because this was Ramones final tour and the only time I ever got to see them live.
I went to see Primus live in 1993 and the Melvins opened up. Houdini had just come out, so they had some buzz. They started their show with at least 10 minutes of feedback and noise. People were not pleased and were yelling, “Primus!” I just watched in awe as they built up to the heaviest shit I had ever heard live - it was either Hooch or Hag Me. Blew my little 15 year old mind. They totally swayed the crowd that night. A molasses slow mosh pit to match the music. I’d never heard anything like it. Bought Houdini and Lysol the very next day. I can’t remember the last time I listened to Primus, but Melvins is still in heavy rotation.
Seen Primus and the Melvins. Love em both. But I'm just a tad more partial to Buzz and Dale. First Melvins show I saw, they were opening, was the 30 minute "eat shit" feedback show. I saw them a few years ago during BULLS and the BEE'S tour, it was slamming off the wall kick ass for 2 hours. Did a killer Kiss cover of DEUCE, and I dont like Kiss, lol. But when filtered through the MELVINS they are awesome.
I saw Melvins open for White Zombie in Houston 1995. I was stoked to see Melvins while virtually no one else cared or knew who they were. All these years later and I've gone to just about every show they play in Houston.
I was at that show, too... I've seen Melvins now around 35 times, and they have never once disappointed. My favorite tour, though, was for the Stag album when they played the 3 separate sets with no opener at The Abyss.
I went to one WZ concert around that time at the summit. Filter was before them and I think a band called wicker man but I could be wrong about the last one. Such a great experience at 15 years old. Not so much a fan of this music now.
I was at this show, 16 yrs old at the abyss. Me and my friend got to meet buzz before the show, and it's the only show I've successfully stage dived at. Good times!!!
I also witnessed a very similar situation in 1998. I was 16 years old when I saw the Melvins open for Tool in Sacramento on their AEnima tour. During the Melvins set the crowd started chanting “go home!” And “you suck!” And Buzzo just turned around to his amp and produced the nastiest feedback for what seemed like forever. The really insane thing was 3 songs into Tool’s set, Buzz came out on stage to join Tool for two songs, and everyone cheered when he came out. I was like “didn’t you idiots just boo him off the stage a half hour ago?!” I mean I know they were there for Tool, but c’mon, it’s the fucking Melvins!!!
@@mikeyjohnson9596 no I don’t believe so. The songs Buzzo joined Tool for on the AEnima tour were Stinkfist and You Lied (which is a cover of Justin Chancellors old band Peach)
I remember seeing The Melvins open for Rush on the Counterparts tour and they played a great set hot their Houdini release and hearing Rush give them praise when they came on.I got to talk at Buzzo years later in NYC and was very nice and asked him about that tour and basically said they were very quiet and easy going I guess that’s what The Melvins like when touring another band
@@hammerhead222 If I got to pick a rockstar to hang out with for a day, it would definitely be Geddy Lee. He seems like such a genuinely nice, down-to-earth guy.
Fun fact: Kurt Kobain produced HOUDINI ( Melvins his favorite band) Listen to Epicac Records! Making people sick for over 20 years! All hail King Buzzo!
@@johngrayatkinson1214 I read that Cobian was sort of put in the position to produce the record but he didn't really do anything. But some producers don't do anything and it's all for the best. So it's funny and cool.
Rob lived by my dad in CT until a few years ago..He had a huge purple barn in his back yard..He was a huge jerk and would scowl if ever seen in town..A skate park was built behind his house and he would always complain over noise from the skaters would antagonize them more after to which he then moved out of state..Don't know where he stays now
Saw the Melvins open for GWAR in 1992. I’m not sure that I or the crowd really got them either. And it was a pretty mixed group as no one knew what to expect from the headliner. Skinheads, skate punks, metal heads, etc. Definitely not die hards or a mean spirited group. They even crowd surfed later during GWAR’s joke opening band (which was slaughtered halfway through, of course). “The more you throw things, and the more you boo, the less I care.”, said Buzzo in a mock sobbing tone. You really have to hear them, and draw your own conclusion. It seems almost like the black licorice of rock music. A few people absolutely love it. Super high end restaurants specialize in taste-memories, like a summer day or burning tires or stuff. Maybe it’s like that.
Saw Melvins once back when they were touring for the Senile Animal album. I didn't have a car, so I asked a friend if he'd take me. I got him a ticket, paid for gas, and paid for food. I honestly don't think he enjoyed the show, but it was an experience I'll always remember. Would love to see them again.
I didn't get the Melvin's the first time I saw them (open for Nirvana their last show before hiring Dave Grohl). Fortunately one of my friends did, and a month later Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments was spending as much time in my tape players as Bleach, Louder Than Love, and Ritual De Lo Habitual.
The Melvins caused me permanent hearing damage after they pulled one of their trademark "put our guitars on the highest feedback possible and walk off stage" stunts. I used to love the Melvins, but they're dead to me now after that bs.
The Melvins in my home town! I had to go! Watched the Melvins get booed off the stage. In my hometown. A town that booed Metallica off stage when they opened for Ozzy. The Melvins ended their set with feedback, Dale screeching into his mic and Buzz chanting “We hate you all, we want you to die!” Over and over again.
Rev HH told the same Shitty joke that night and the next night 130 miles away. And Rob blamed Sean for fucking up the set when it was he who couldn’t breathe properly. His vocals were the only problem. And the ONLY band with integrity got booed off stage.
The ultimate booing i ever saw was when days of the new opened for metallica. It must surely have been traumatic to play a set through 45 minutes of insults, middle fingers, "you suck!!", booos, etc. From what i understand that tour did traumatize their singer. I didnt like them either and everyone came for metallica not them, they had a bunch of acoustic guitars and melodies, it just didn't fit. But i can't imagine sharing music you put your heart into only to be told to end your self night after night
@@davidtingley9978 Yes, I saw Metallica open for Ozzy in Long Beach, California, where half of the crowd was booing them and shouting "we want Ozzy!" When Metallica left the stage those of us who enjoyed their set cheered, but as our cheer of appreciation faded out there was a sustained booooo! I've seen several very good bands get booed for not being the headliners. Most people are stupid and rude, no matter what kind of music they listen to.
It's a wierd thing with rock audiences. They're there to see the main act and shut themselves off from anything else. I can understand Buzzo's frustration and the Melvins reaction to this crap. The Melvins are awesome.
I hope you do one about Gary Numan's failed attempt to fly around the world, which is when he nearly crashed his private plane in India due to a bad reaction to an apple he ate, then he got arrested. It was around 1981. I remember hearing him talk about it on one the "Images" interview records. Rob kind of sounds like a spoiled princess, lol.
Yeah , every time I have ever heard Rob Zombie interviewed he always comes off as a conceited schmuck, like he is doing a massive favor to share any of his precious time with whoever “commoner” is interviewing him. That is elitist rock star crap does not vibe with King Buzzo.
He kind of is. And you can see it all over his early music videos... At the height of popularity, with Sean and Jay looking to do one more album, he decided to dissolve the band to go solo. It was weird to someone on the outside... And the music he initially released was basically the exact same style of music he had been releasing the previous decade. But worse. White Zombie was dipping in to Progressive Metal. Every member contributed to the sound and all the pieces complimented each other. Sean's bass-lines, riffs and hooks were frequently their signature. The Drums were always driving along and Yeunger's Guitar was frequently wandering, screaming and great especially when it came back to accent Sean. And Rob's weird barely decipherable moaning growl fit into it well enough. All that really stood out in Rob's solo effort was Rob. Except when he stopped singing for a second to let a decent riff or hook take center stage briefly. And Rob's singing isn't strong enough to carry a band's sound.
When you call fans of the bands you're opening for Baby Rockers and other slurs, and act childish... you get childish. King buzzos a guy that can dish it out but when it comes back hes angry, got no respect for people like him
Because Melvins are truly a punk band and don’t give a fuck about you or your opinions - you’re just another meatbag with an opinion. Kurt Cobain worshipped the Melvins to the point of becoming a roady just to be near them. He even played percussion on some Melvins tracks. Kurt Cobain was a self admitted sellout and that doesn’t go over well with some people who were part of the original Seattle scene... I know Buzz played a big part in a lot of those bands rise to fame and a lot of them now act like they don’t even know him anymore when he went out of his way to support them early on.
Excellent comment. Behaving like a wannabe Al Jorgensen is nothing to brag about. I feel it needs to be said that White Zombie were aah, in my meaningless opinion, um, what can I say. A lacklustre gimmick band perhaps?
I know bands hate doing the promo routine, but it does pay off. If you are a headliner and you ask a band you like to be an opening act, you almost owe it to them. A lot of issues could be solved by the headliners going on local radio before a show and letting their fans know about the opening act. Maybe hype them up a bit, or at least tell the people something like "They're different than us, they may not be what you expect, but they are good so give them half a chance."
@@GrahamPablo i just don't see a headliner going out to advertise for each of many openings acts along their tour. People are likely going to the show primarily for the headliner in many cases. I don't think his suggestion of what to say would really be effective either "they're different, not what you expect, give them a chance". That wouldn't sell it but aside from that it's just not their responsibility (or necessary for them) to hype up their supporting acts It's just natural too. The structure of show is for opening 2 acts to usually start to slowly hype up crowd for headliner (not the opposite). Many people will be arriving still during first opening act at least. People won't know any of openers songs in many cases so they can't sing along or know when beat is going to change dancing. It's an opportunity the headliner already gives openers to support them, not other way around, and it's up to openers to put on amazing show and get crowd going. If they don't do that, then it could be on opening act, could be a closed minded audience, or bad selection for who the opener is stylistically, but again people ultimately just didn't come for them. They fill the time until it starts to get late, people are all there (often with some drinks in them), people are comfortable yet apprehensive for their favorite band of many years to finally come out. the lights go out and 15,000 waiting people finally let it all out to see their band on stage, a slow riff enters, some smoke and lights, and then BOOM into strong first track for headliner's set. Crowd goes nuts. The opener is just not gonna get that by definition and there's not much that can be done for it. Big bands don't want to open, they headline their own tours. it's a way smaller bands get some exposure and again it's on them to sell themselves.
The Melvins seem to have had trouble with every band they ever toured with and old Buzzo comes off as a jealous prick. Not hard to see that the other bands were never really the problem...
I've always thought King Buzzo's stage name sounded like a bad ass Super Mario/Donkey Kong stage boss. Imagine this: Louigi: Wholly Rigatoni Mario, look out! It's King Buzzo and his Melvin minions!
Rob Zombie has been playing to tape since the early 90s - I saw them before they got big a few times and Zombie would get winded and let the audience sing and stick to "Yeahs" and "Oww"s. Once they got bigger, suddenly he's singing perfectly? No.
Now that you mention it I swear I saw white zombie early in their career in some live MTV awards show (or some other awards show) and I remember seeing Rob zombie totally out of breath and unable to actually sing the song. I was like wtf? This guy's terrible.
When I seen Rob Zombie at a festival in 2012/13 I will admit it was very disappointing, love his music and his albums... not to mention he’s the only bloke that dances like that. But the constant audio loops were irritating and not what you see a live band to hear.
My dad saw them at a club in 92 or 93, after la sexorcisto came out before they got really big, and he said most of the show was just samples. I saw his band just a couple years ago and I swear half of the time he wasn't even trying to fake it anymore, like you could literally see him not holding the mic anywhere near his face but you could still hear his voice perfectly fine
Was the same with the Nirvana fans at the last concert in Munich. They booed to the Melvins the whole set, and screamed Nirvana the whole time. I think only a tenth of the crowd was into them. Kurt was pissed cos of how crowd behaved towards the Melvins. The Melvins and Helmet brought me to alternative music which brought me later to D.I.Y. screamo, Hardcore Punk, Straight Edge Hardcore, Metal and Powerviolence they had a big impact on my life.
Despite everything, I saw them perform live last year in a super small bar venue in a local city and it was borderline magical. Really pulls you into a trance and Steve McDonald is such a great physical performer! The whole band absolutely has star power
Ironically so many artists bigger than he would ever be kept promoting the Melvins yet King Buzzo complains constantly. Talk about a sense of entitlement and lack of gratitude. The Melvins are a great example of getting so much for doing so little. King Buzzo is a entitled, ungrateful, untalented crybaby who in a fair and just world would be a school teacher or car salesman not a semi rockstar
@@orb2150txI heard his interviews I call it as I hear it and yes King Bozo is a untalented hack and yes the Melvins were a real crap show of a band who had famous fans and got lucky because of it. Face it they sucked and were a bunch of spoiled babies. Every audience knew they sucked. Now tell me I don't know what am talking about
Melvins never seemed to get the idea of winning a tough crowd over. Throwing a hissy fit and walking off stage is completely unprofessional, and sh-tty to the fans that ARE there to see you. Alice in Chains dealt with the same thing opening clash of the titans, but they grit their teeth and played through it. I've met Buzz, and he had a very crappy attitude. I've heard the same from others. Throwing shade at NIN and calling them mtv baby rock is hilarious to me, knowing the controversy they generated with their videos. If anything they should get credit for pushing the boundaries of what you can do in video. You can't deny that Reznor takes his art seriously, and deserves that respect.
Buzz is just a smart ass, always has been. I've met him as well. He has strong opinions and can rub people the wrong way,, but he can be personable and very cool. They come from the early 80s punk scene and it's a whole different mentality. No fanboy rockstar worship. I've seen them in a big venue and they were great. Dale knows how to dial in an amazing drum sound. It's not everybody's cup of tea. I guess I'm a music snob but not everybody "gets" it. Its not mainstream music. I'm reminded of the Ramones opening for Sabbath. I read the audience despised them, throwing shit etc. As far as NIN they've become great over the years but I saw them on the first Lollapalooza tour early on. They were awful. Everyone was touting them as this edgy new band and it was laughable. A lot of forced anger, throwing nice equipment around. Very contrived. There's a great story of Mike Patton sticking up for the Melvins when they opened up for FNM. Worth reading
My sentiments exactly. If you’re not a fan of the headliner’s fans, don’t take it out on your fans. I know quite a few people who go to see the opening bands who care less for the headliner. I saw The Melvins open for GWAR in Orlando. The show was sold out and the line to get in was wrapped around the block. Just as we were about to get into the venue, the show started. Then two Melvin fans were begging to be let in,. Saying they were there only to The Melvins. They were told no. I saw them crowd surfing at the end of their set. Can you imagine how they would feel, if when they got in they heard guitar reverb because fudge the headliner’s fans?
@@spidey1z Yah man. Imagine if every band that opened for slayer did that lol. They have a reputation for being incredibly hard to open for, because of the fans. It's not a normal reaction, having a hissy fit I mean. You can try and be a hipster about it and say "were just about the music maaaaaan" but touring a band IS a business, and pulling stunts like that is incredibly bad for your reputation. If buzz had any feelings about not breaking through or being bigger, having that attitude didn't help. Talking about industry guys making it hard for them, well no sh-t dude, you were doing the same for them. Whole thing in funny to me, some of these guys seem like they're mentally stuck at 18 years old.
I went to this tour: Sunken Garden Theater, San Antonio. I had never heard of the Melvins until then. Bought their album, Stoner Witch, the week after and was a fan to this day. They played their set start to finish, non-stop. Beautiful. Funny: My experience was the complete opposite of Buzzo's experience. @Melvins Sorry you had such a bad experience on that tour but your band's performance was spectacular. Real professionals, I would've not known you had had a bad experience.
I caught a show on this tour in VA and the Melvins were great..a friend saw a few earlier tour shows with the Ramones opening … he said half the audience left after the Ramones finished their set..not surprised
Buzzo is a bitter old man, never heard him say a nice thing about any band he's ever tour with besides Tool. And honestly, Tool aren't the nicest people to begin with, so that makes sense.
But he said nice things about Kiss, Babes In Toyland and even Paul McCartney. I think he's difficult to get along with, but not impossible. He's a hater, but he's fair.
@Christopher Bingham I thought you were serious until you mentioned the “no talent” thing. They’re not lady Kanye Gaga. They know how to utilize their instruments. Plus Buzz isn’t some technical prog mental snob that looks down, he reaches out to bands that Karen rockers wouldn’t dare touch. Experimental does not equal lack of talent.
I just saw The Melvins open up for Ministry about four days ago. They were really good. This was my only time seeing them. The crowd seemed to love them.
I just saw Melvins too for the first time. Opened for Ministry and after Corrosion of Conformity. I didn't even know the Melvins were going to be there (The Rave in Milwaukee). After concert went home and immediately dove head first into the Melvins. They're the real deal...
Just saw the Melvins in San Antonio 5 days ago they put on a great show... I think there's many out there that can't just appreciate music and be grateful that these bands came out for you to enjoy
That's the thing...so many times in my life I've shown music that wasn't mainstream to people or girlfriends, and they'd love it - yet would not become a fan or listen to it on their own because it wasn't some well-known mainstream band.
Most women like mainstream garbage. Sure there are outliers everywhere but you don't get a Taylor Swift or a Miley Cyrus or a Britney Spears or a Post Malone without some help.
Sadly true that the great horde of dipshits prefers banal tripe over amazing music. Thus I have few like-minded friends and have had fewer like-minded loves. Of course it doesn't help that I'm trapped in a vast expanse of flyover country--the Bible-Belt wasteland of Okiehoma....
its not whether its mainstream or not. Sometimes people dont like what they dont like. Melvins are not for everyone and that's it. People are being polite to you saying mh this is ok probably. Mainstream is meainstream because it has universal appeal. Music is also a way of self identification and not many people identify with heavy distorted guitars. Maybe to you it all looks cool- to me all I see is some fat dude and his bend overendulging themselves in what they like to play. It is as fun as watching a high school band having a jam session. I dont find anything special about that band. None of those people has any charisma, any showmanship, any talent that I havent seen. There are metal bands that shred. vocals that sing in several octaves range, drummers that eat little children with 2 bass pedals. Melvins is average in every aspect. Something any of those bands can do in their sleep. So why would I wanna pay money so see somoene do something I myself could do easily. All they had to do is be on the right place at the right time at some 100 people club to inspire a future rock star so I he could surpass me in every level and then pay his respects by wanting to produce my break out album. Then i can milk that fame till the rest of my days. Every average musician on any of those instruments can tell you what the Melvins do is nothing special.
are they loving it, or are they being polite and giving you the positive reaction you're looking for because they know you love it? and haven't you enjoyed something the first time you heard it, and then not so much after that, or just like one song from a band? you're trying to convince people to like what you like, and it ain't gonna work.
Buzzo is the lowest common denominator in a lot of tour drama. He just seems generally acerbic and hard to get along with. I 100% believe everything he said about Rob Zombie though. The guy is a total prima donna hack.
I heard a radio interview with Rob Zombie back during this '95 tour. This was before he had even had the much bigger blow up as a solo act. The guy was a dick to the interviewer and came off as a self-entitled prince who thought he was doing his audiences a favor just by showing up. I have heard a ton of interviews with musicians but Zombie was such a next level asshole on this occasion I have remembered the interview to this day.
@@termsofusepolice I remember listening to the Stern show when RZ was a guest and caller slagged him for being a bad Ministry ripoff and Rob said he never heard of them...which i found difficult at best to believe
This puts some interesting context into the time I saw Rob and the Melvins at Soundwave festival. Rob was on first, Melvins were due to start at a certain time on the stage right next to Zombie, but Zombie went over time, by quite a while, at least 10 min. Melvins took the stage when they were supposed to, and just leaned forward as much as they could on the stage to kind of.. look at Zombie over on the next stage. Then eventually just started playing some droney sounds until Rob finally finished. However not convinced about playing to tape, entirely at least. Live Rz sounded pretty out of breath a few times, I know what the studio vocals sounds like, and it wasn't that. He sounds the same on other live recordings I've heard too. I don't doubt there's some level of assistance though with backing vocals or something.
I was reading a comment someone posted about how the last time they saw zombie he was singing and slipped, fell on his back and the mic went flying out of his hands, but the vocals kept going. he never saw zombie again cuz he was disgusted in that.
Editorial correction: One can't play 51 states in the U.S. which only has 50 states. If Wash. D.C. was one of the locations in which they played, it's technically not a state -- although there is a movement to make it one; however, 'til that becomes a reality (assuming that it ever will), it still doesn't qualify as a state.
I seen the Melvin's with Tool in Phoenix and we love them , this is the first time I heard they got treated like dogs on other tours which is totally sad.
Melvin's opened for tool in Dallas 98. They were rocking out and even had a decent pit ragin. Unfortunately for the three songs they played most the crowd just chanted " fuck you put tool on". Melvin's walked off stage and hail satanas was played on the loud speaker for an hour before tool came on. I was kinda pissed Melvin's we're doin good but crowd wasn't having it. The Melvin's are a highly underrated band.
I saw that tour in San Jose, CA. The Melvins did a 45 minute set, 30 minutes of which was feedback from their amps. By the end of their set they were being booed off the stage with extreme prejudice.
Philly and Detroit are supposedly two of the most hated places that bands play. I've heard this from at least 20 or so different bands at this point, from underground to headliners.
@@Luke-zh5xe Because we dont put up with BS. The Melvins suck. They really do. Their live show is trash. They really are not good. Yet their 'rep' sells. @@Luke-zh5xe why is that?? Aint Detroit called rock motor city or some shit? If the Philly rock fans are like their sports fans then i understand why bands would say that lol
Well I've Seen the Melvin's play and I've seen White Zombie & Rob Zombie solo play and I've see NIN play. Giving people a lousy show and then blaming your failure on them by calling them "Baby rockers" for not just taking it is probably the reason you're not a bigger band.
Destroying a dressing room is immature angsty childs play that King Buzzard got out of his system as a teenager. However, playing feedback while having a temper tantrum hurling childish insults and smashing your instruments is high brow stuff, dude. Clearly the Melvins just went over your head...
Don't be silly. I saw Nashville Pussy with Marilyn Manson and everyone hated them and the energy was annoying. I saw them again a year later with Motorhead, they were awesome and I bought all their stuff. So yeah, sometimes it matters who you are with. Slayer and Stryper were friends and always wanted to do a Heaven and Hell tour. They knew it would never work though for the same reason
Another thing that's hilarious is that Melvins opened for Tool a few months after the NIN debacle, at the SAME VENUE. There were some boos: I mean, NIN and Tool in 95? It was 1/2 the same audience. They played like two songs and walked off stage, and turned on this 5 minute loop of a reading of some.satanic text, and played it for like 30 min. The crowd was PISSED. Then, Maynard came out dressed and acting like a minister. He coaxed buzz out to join him on a tool song. But, yeah, Melvins/Dallas/95 was JUST priceless.
@@GlassThirdEye It sure could have been 96, but it was shortly enough after the NIN debacle that Buzz obviously had a chip on his shoulder, and the audience was primed to fuck with him again. I don't even think it was about not LIKING them at that point. I think the crowd just thought it was FUNNY. But, yeah, they played that satanic thing for like thirty MINUTES, until the crowd was uneasy and chanting "fuck this shit! Fuck this shit!" Then Reverend Maynard came out. It was just perfect.

I was at that Philly show in 1995. I remember them getting booed, I remember the Mutter's Museum reference, and I remember reading the article that said they went over everybody's head. I also remember the Melvins pointing out a heckler and saying he had "one extra chromosome." I don't remember the feedback comment at the end of it, but their set was definitely running together for me by that point. I didn't think they were bad, but I can see why other White Zombie fans (and NIN fans) just wouldn't be into it. But the Melvins are gonna do their thing, whether you like 'em or not.
I was at that fair park coliseum show. I kinda remembered it slightly differently. I was in the upper balcony so I didn’t throw pieces of the floor on stage. One of the Melvins were actually hit by the partial board in the head. That’s when they went off stage. At that moment the crowd was super happy. Then Trent did come up pissed off as hell and mention that he be of the Melvins might have a concussion. Two years later at the exact same venue with the headliner Tool and the Melvins opened. Booed off stage again this time Maynard James had to calm us down.

I remember seeing Bauhaus play before NIN and the clueless in the crowd were disrespectful to them. I say Let Them Eat Feedback.
I caught the White Zombie/ Melvins show in Dallas. Just before the Melvins hit the stage, I was in line to get a beer and was having a nice conversation with a gentleman about how great the Melvins were and the talent of King Buzzo. I finally introduced myself and this man stuck out his hand and said "my friends call me Dime." That's right. It was Dimebag of Pantera. My jaw dropped. I asked him why he wasn't backstage having groupies pour beer down his throat. He replied "tonight, I'm here to see the King!" He then bought me a beer and headed back out onto the floor. But, not before shouting "King Buzzo for president!" Greatest show ever.
I saw Korn open for Rob Zombie in 2018. Totally blew Rob away, crowd totally loved Korn more. About halfway through Rob Zombie's set, Rob just kind of gave up, was visually and vocally unenthusiastic. So yeah, I heard they sucked live and I can now attest to it.

Excellent Idea.

@@SoulDelSol why
@@GrahamPablo i just don't see a headliner going out to advertise for each of many openings acts along their tour. People are likely going to the show primarily for the headliner in many cases. I don't think his suggestion of what to say would really be effective either "they're different, not what you expect, give them a chance". That wouldn't sell it but aside from that it's just not their responsibility (or necessary for them) to hype up their supporting acts
It's just natural too.

I saw them when they toured with Pantera in 96, and I thought Blood, Milk and Sky sounded like the entire band was playing to a tape.

Oh man Korn? Really? That's hilarious 😂
