Yo! This is a new one for me! Ren used to play drums for the Big Push before Glen came on, I wonder if the drum track is him? He also said on one of his recent interviews that half of freckled angels was the stuff he recorded with Sony before he got really sick, so maybe not.
This is my daughter's favorite song :) She needs to go draw in her sketchbook after listening everytime without fail ❤

Yo 🧡🧡 it may be even further back. He mentioned that his Freckled Angels album had some tracks that were supposed to be on the album from Sony that never got finished due to his illness. No clue which ones though

Liking and commenting on every reactor doing this song. I wish we could play it so loudly that the whole planet could hear simultaneously and send it into outer space! The message is about overcoming so much hardship and getting back up. I love it.

Love this tune, yo! 💜 ETA: the more I listen, the more this song reminds me of Rush.
He said he’s been making music & performing since age 12, & then took a break as a young adult during the worst of his health crisis, but was back at it as soon as he was physically & mentally able to write music again.
So glad it seems that Ren’s back catalog is endless. He said in a recent interview that he’s also working on new stuff for his already completed album that he planned on releasing during his time in Canada so there’ll be even more coming up.
Sometimes I wonder how many unreleased songs & unfinished bits & fragments he has floating around? 🎶

@@michaelgoyettemusic when I was holidays last month, I saw an announcement that his CDs were back in his online shop. So I bought all 3, Freckled Angels, Demos 1 and 2. So a new fan, but now my CD library has grown.
@Martin Robinson Did the same thing! I feel like it took forever to get through customs haha. It showed up on my wedding anniversary which was cool!
BTW... He played all the instruments of this track, then mixed it all himself to recreate what they come up with when he was with the guy from Sony! He asked years later if he could release it... was told yeah go ahead... with No strings! It's his to do what he wants! So he recreated what he could recall as far as production went!
That's why it sounds so different from his other stuff!

Have a feeling that "crescendo" line is consciously put in there as an ode to smooth criminal acknowledging the similarities in cadence. Oi...I mean Yo.
It's very clear in this song (to me anyway) how much John Frusciante inspired him on guitar. He even has a lyric in the song "Power" about learning licks from John Frusciante

Man, it's been a decade or so since I last heard D'yer Mak'er even *mentioned* ... had a friend in high school (ie, considerably longer than a decade ago lol) who was absolutely obsessed with that song. It was probably the very first Zeppelin song I ever heard because of that (we were generally not running with a crowd who listened to Zeppelin, thinking that it was 'heavy metal' when we were acoustic folk fans... I discovered a couple of years later what I was missing in dismissing the rest of Zeppelin's catalogue tho, when we had 3 guys who played as an acoustic guitar trio doing Zeppelin and Neil Young covers migrate into our circle of friends).
This is a great track, isn't it? Solo project Ren, but with a full drum kit? Yes, please.
I also hear some Chili Peppers influence in that intro riff.

Half of the Freckled Angels album is tracks from the ill-fated Sony album (which was never completed due to his illness), and I think this must be one of them (recorded in 2010/11) as his solo tracks don't usually feature a full drum kit. (I keep wondering who played bass & drums on this - Trick the Fox ? Session musicians ?) I agree that the vocal pattern at times sounds like Smooth Criminal.

@Michael Goyette, Ren's song Freckled Angels is a song about one of Ren's best friends who committed suicide.. Very sad and personal song! Although Ren tries to keep it up beat?

I always focus on the music more so than the lyrics too. It’s why I never really dug rap with the exceptional a few standouts. Ren has broadened my horizons and helped me appreciate the genre a little more. I love almost everything he does but the tracks where sings and plays guitar are usually my favorites.

Wow Mike! another stellar reaction. Your musical insight and breakdowns are my favorite thing to watch you do! Agree: I heard direct call outs to MJ Smooth Criminal in the lyrical phrasing and pitch choices at the beginning to include lyrical shadowing. I also hear Fusciante of RHCP fame influences in this entire piece and possibly some Flea in the bass influences and non-traditional riffs he used. It's a seven year old song at this point, but it feels fresh and I could hear this on the radio today. Love you brother, never stop making music and being the wondeful human that you seem to be, peace brother! 10k COMING! and....YO!

IF this track goes back to the Trick the Fox era, then the drummer MIGHT be Tommy Frampton who played with TtF. I've think I've tracked him down here on YT. if it's the same guy he is still in the industry, though not as a drummer and goes by Tom Frampton. Someone with a better ear for this sort of thing might be able to figure out how likely it is to have been him. Or someone with more nerve than I might just ask him.
I'll admit I've been curious/worried about all of the new attention on Ren bringing up questions of copyrights with the other two members on the old Trick the Fox songs, and issues over the copyrights of songs he has done retakes on or the very MJ feel at the start of this. He may have gone unnoticed or been given a pass when the owners of these things thought he was just some YouTubing busker with a little cult following, but now that things are blowing up and getting streams and making sales on different platforms, things could get messy, and expensive. Yo
