    #1:melodically lyrical and well-disciplined; #2: altoist has a Charlie Parkeresque chain of thought; guitarist is a storyteller who knows that, at times, less is more;
    #3:alto saxist utilizes melodic variations and references beautifully; #4: tenorman Ernest does not hesitate to deposit Watts of excellence much to the audience's contentment...
    Well done, champs!

    Had to pull my phone close and squint my eyes just to make sure that wasn't Morgan Freeman.

      that, on the bass, sir, is the legend that is Chuck Rainey. One of the most recorded musicians of all time (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway etc) and a wonderful inspiring gentleman.

    Ciaran has such a refreshing alto sound in a world full of Kenny Garrett clones etc. The lighter touch of a Konitz or Desmond is lost on most altoists of today. I also dig how Cathal is coming more out of Eric Dolphy and Ornette in a playful melodic way.

    Solos: 1st. thoughtfully progressive and cool.
    2nd. great articulation with the use of organic real jazz vocabulary.
    3rd. cucumber polite is the guitarist.
    4th. nice alto saxophone sound a la Paul Desmond with flashes of Organic Real Jazz feel.
    5th Organic Real Jazz feel.
    6th Ernest Watts...well!
    Why is he there as a soloist, Ernie Watts?
    Great fun!

    Why does Mike insist on using a nylon string guitar? I'd absolutely love to hear those lines on a steel string jazz box. The lines are great but the nylon string sound just doesn't sound do it for me? Anyone disagree?

    • @meilanamusic
      @meilanamusic 5 років тому +1

      I suppose he likes the sound of it, just like I prefer the tenor to the alto for myself to play... There are so many guitarists already using a hollowbody gibson with steels..

      Mike does what Mike likes. If you have problem with that, click that "DELETE" key. Nobody's twisting your arm, forcing you to listen to the sounds that are not "your cup of tea". Got it dude ???

    I thought the tenor saxophonist next to Ernie Watts was perhaps a little out of his depth on this.

      That's Matthew Halpin and he's a very very deep cat. Music isn't a competition, rather a celebration of all the different individuals and the the collective they come together to create.

      Ady, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but trust me when I tell you that the other saxophone soloists up there, including Ernie, can hear the depth and expression in Matthew's playing. He is definitely a musician's musician with a unique voice and a story to tell. I definitely enjoyed hearing him!
