    I am genuinely amazed that Rodney is so clear in explaining things on the fly without a stutter. Just think of all the uuuhms and eeeehs in other scripted tutorials and things are far from clear. You're a natural!

    Have Joel: Use 1 pawn to build the roof with candles and 1 wood (use 2 determination tokens to reduce cost of wood by 1). Use 1 pawn and 1 wood on Frost card. Use the pipe and tobacco (gaining 2 more determination tokens) to use the Handyman skill (discarding 3 tokens) gaining a building pawn.
    Have Noel: Use 1 pawn to gather wood (to protect against snow, hopefully). Use 1 pawn with scouting pawn to explore. Consider using Reconnaissance skill to pick a island tile unlocking the possibility to build the rope next round.
    Have Friday build the Knife with the new building pawn, increasing the weapon level by 1.
    Kill Benny if food is needed.

    12:17 - "Wait, there's predators on this island...?" - My first immediate thought was: "If it bleeds, we can kill it." ;D
    Enjoyed the humour in this episode. :) You played very well and also paid good attention to the rules, which can indeed be tricky in this game. I'm curious where this will be going and I'm looking forward to the next episode.
    Since I'm posting late, I won't make any suggestions for the next turn, but here's one general piece of advice: in terms of risking to fail a task and getting injured, the build action is the most dangerous action: 33% chance to fail, 66% chance for getting injured. So those candles you found will definitely be useful.
    In case someone is interested in all the numbers for all 3 actions:
    Build: 33% chance for failure, 50% chance for having an adventure, 66% chance to suffer a wound.
    Gather: 16% chance for failure, 50% chance for having an adventure, 16% chance to suffer a wound.
    Explore: 16% chance for failure, 83% chance for having an adventure, 50% chance to suffer a wound.
    I know this may sound mathy and like boring crunching of numbers, but this game is not only really tough, but at times also often quite random and bad events can easily chain-react and spiral out of control into really nasty situations, so every bit of more control should be taken. No need to memorise these numbers, but it's good to keep them in the back of your head or take a look at the dice' face overview (included with the game) while planning a turn, especially when a morale threshold is about to get passed on a character's life track. :)
    Good luck !
    PS: I wonder when they will find the mysterious hatch on this island...

    - When the Carpenter noticed that there will be no food for the night he decided to kill the Goat using the gun (gain one food and one fur in the immediate resource area)
    - Then the Carpenter used the pipe and after that he was so determined (take 2 determination for the carpenter)
    - The Carpenter started to deal with the threat and he started to warm the camp (pay 2 determination, don't use wood)
    - Friday on the other hand stayed all night making us a roof (use the fur and the candle)
    - The Carpenter spends his determination to use his skill (for a brown token - helper)
    - The Explorer started to make a shortcut (one explorer token and the brown token we just got)
    - both the Carpenter and the Explorer will go and build the Hatchet using one wood
    (in the weather phase we will burn the last wood)

    build a roof with 2 pawns (use candles), and go hunting with 2 pawns (plan on using pistol & Friday) & with temp weapons level, if needed slaughter the billy goat. use 2 pawns to explore as well. that should get you through the night relatively unscathed and prepared for the next round. d

    i watched this video back 4 years ago and fell in love with this game, re watchign to remember some rules, and DAMN, this is just PERFECT, nice and clear rules but also the jokes?, its too relatable to the jokes i actually do with my friends while playing and thats its ACTUALLY one of the best part of the game: the laughs that comes with the "things " that happen in this very GOOD "story driven" game (more like temathic or immersive)

    Hey Rodney and Pep,
    When crisis strikes, and nothing more can be done, and when weather becomes a problem, given the environment negative effects you needed to survive, I think it's time for that GOAT to be ...khm ... sacrificed .... For a greater cause ... (*Friday starts drooling in the shadows* )
    - That will avoid the gathering resources this turn, which will not make you do the "?" on the gathering deck ...
    - The GOAT will provide 3 food and 1 skin (or w/e it's called). ( *Drooling intensifies* )
    - This means, you put one of Rodney's action tokens on the "WARMING THE CAMP" card effect (action) and the skin from the goat to fulfill it thus keeping the wood untouched for building/main objective, and you don't have to gather resources this round due to that "?".
    - Then the other action token from Rodney, should go for the Cellar, so you can use that already gained food (from the GOAT) and prepare it for next round, to store it ... Try to build the Cellar, and if you wanna amplify the effect and not risk it, maybe Friday can be of use to support you, for a full positive round after all of those environment negativity ...
    - One of Pep's action tokens should go to heal (REST) as he's coming close to the morale loss area, and risk his other action token SOLO for the exploration action and hope ... and pray ... he does not roll a wound :D If he does, blame Friday, he over-drooled as Pep's explorer slips and suffers a light concussion ...
    - *Optional* : (Instead of exploring Pep can try building the Hatchet with one of his workers and the CANDLE token + 1 wood, so you can safely prepare to gather more wood with it in future rounds if you wanna cancel the exploration in this round).
    - You may be postponing the WOOD Gathering but you are surviving some horrors from those evil environment cards, and at the same time building ( and drooling obviously) for the future, removing food rotting as an issue, in future turns, where you can FOCUS on gathering WOOD for the main objective!
    Good luck,
    and may the ODDS be EVER in your FAVOR :D !
    Cheers! :D

    You guys forgot on ur first round at the end to take 1 wound to each player... if you do not own a shelter or natural shelter in the night phase. (..you must do this check... perhaps mosquitos or terrible sleep or sickness occurs from open elements.)

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  6 років тому +1

      Hey Gene, we were on a tile that has a natural shelter. From the rules: Sleeping under an open sky (if there is no natural shelter
      on the respective Island tile) causes you to suffer 1 wound during the Night Phase.

    Great video :)
    I played this scenario many times and more then a couple of times I lost :) - usually because I did not have the time to make the "wood pile" and the weather dice (the number of clouds and the snow symbols) in the late game are unforgivable.
    In this scenario You always have to remember about the main goal: "to make the wood pile" whenever You have any available wood and occasion. In the late game You always have a wood shortage - because of the weather dice.
    The second important thing is to build the roof to about level 3 (or higher if You heve the time and resources), to avoid the clouds on the weather dice in the late game - avoiding winter clouds provide more wood.

  • @Fnoffen
    @Fnoffen 8 років тому +5

    The Carpenter should use Economic Construction to make a hatchet, (because you need HUGE amounts of wood) then gather wood (due to same reason).
    Explorer should use reconnaissance to try for the symbol needed for the rope (so we later can make a snare and thus not need to worry about food) and explore that area, then do event "Tracking A Predator" using the pistol. (Don't like the idea of getting dice in the weather area.)
    Friday should build a roof.

    I think that that you should starting to think about the victory condition, you need at least 6 turns to complete it ( 1 for fire and 5 for the mission) the earlier you start the easier for you it will be. So you need to gather a lot of food while not dying . So first priority is to build roof for the weather and the hatchet ( you will need 15 wood for the bonefire and more for the camp and misc stuff for survival) . you will also need another food .If you go hunting you will waste the extra that why I think you should gather .

    • @rpesel
      @rpesel 8 років тому +8

      So 1 action+candles for building hatchet with rodneys economical construction , 2 actions(one of them with Friday) for roof , 1 action wit Pep for exploring+ map, 1 action to gather. Conserve Pep's tokens for Scouting ability. In later turns shortcut will be usefull for food or wood .if you use it for food you will be fine with it till the end of the game. Good luck

    Use the Pistol to Kill the Goat.
    Friday
    - One Token + Candles + Pelt from Goat to Build a Roof.
    Explorer
    - One Token + Map on Exploring adjacent tile
    - One Token on Buidling the Shortcut
    Carpenter
    - One Token on Resolving the frost (Spend 2 Determination so No Wood is needed)
    - One Token + 1 Wood on Building the Hatchet.
    2 Risky Builds, but both will give you 1 Wood / food per turn going forward, and thus are well worth it.
    You Could build the Cellar instead of the Hatchet to preserve the excess food from the goat, but food isn't going to be nearly as important to winning, so I lean towards Hatchet.

    GAMEPLAY SUGGESTION:
    Take care of frost, use Joel’s Economical Construction and 2 determination tokens to not have to use the wood, use one of Joel’s pawn’s for this. Build the roof with Oil token to protect against the weather, because those clouds hurt, use candles so that this is guaranteed. Use Joel’s other pawn to try to build hatchet to start collecting more wood. Use Nowell’s Reconnaissance to see what three tiles are coming up and place them to maximize tokens and/or resources. Try to Explore with one of Nowell’s pawn’s to get those tokens. Place Nowell’s other pawn and Gather token on a food resource. Build Cellar with Friday.

    P.S.: Getting wounded while drawing a map, does that mean that marooned shipwreck survivors are very prone to repetitive strain injury, or is map parchment just infamous for giving near-lethal paper cuts?

  • @jaysonolson33

    at 11:40, you stated you have 1 food available for next round. I thought any food not used was considered perishable unless you have a means (i.e. cellar) of safely storing it.

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  8 років тому

      Any food shaped like a bread slice is non-perishable food. When you gain that (which we did through the Food Crates), you can keep it indefinitely. Food you gain as a banana token does perish at the end of the round.

    • @jaysonolson33
      @jaysonolson33 8 років тому

      Ah, this isn't present in the 1st ed. Food is just food as far as I'm aware in my ed. No fancy tokens that delineate bread vs banana. So does that mean some of the event cards differ from 1st/2nd ed.? If so, I can see this as possibly making things a bit easier, especially if there is a potential for some food not being dismissed early on in the game.

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  8 років тому +1

      The original edition had perishable and non-perishable food as well (they were distinguished between yellow and orange cubes). The new edition don't change the game, just cleans up the rules, upgrades some of the components and brushes up the wording on cards (to make them clearer).

    I think it's a bad idea to cover up the bottom half of the adventure cards. The bottom half explains what that token does. Sometimes it gives you important information that will influence which inventions you ought to be aiming for.

    • @samatlantaga
      @samatlantaga 8 років тому +3

      Ah but that removes a portion of the thematic emersion. The idea is that you only know what's happened, and you have to make your decision based on what you think could happen down the road. If you were in the wild you might see something you think is edible. You have to choose if you're going to eat it or not, but you can't be sure of the outcome (full stomach, sickness, death, etc). I think it adds a lot thematically.

    • @FinnCanDo85
      @FinnCanDo85 8 років тому +1

      Indeed. I always do the same myself, really adds to the theme and decision making! I also do the same with Arkham Horror. I never reveal the possible outcomes of any choices or tests for an encounter. Makes the game 10-times more thematic in my opinion

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  8 років тому +1

      This is more of a thematic decision we are making. As you say, it will make the game harder (but I tend to do that with co-ops anyway :) )

    Hi Rodney. Question for you… As you are working on the objective to build the wood pile to light the fire, what if you don’t have or don’t want to assign enough wood to a certain stage of the wood pile? Can you do that? For example, if you were working on stage 3 of the wood pile (requires 3 wood), could you put 2 wood on that space in one round and then assign 1 wood (for a total of 3) in a future round? Or, do you have to assign all 3 wood all at once to that round? I guess what I’m asking is…can you split up the amount of wood needed for a certain stage? Or is it all at once? Thanks!

    • @WatchItPlayed
      @WatchItPlayed  3 роки тому

      Good question Chris - it's been long enough since I shot this, that I don't recall what I say in the tutorial video for the game, and I don't have my copy to check the rules for you, I'm afraid!

      @@WatchItPlayed I looked at the “Castaways” scenario (Scenario #1), and under “Building the woodpile”, it says, “You can place any amount of wood onto the pile in a round.” So, I would say that you do not have to fulfill a certain stage of the woodpile all at once. :-)

    at 16:00 Friday tried to build the shelter and succeeded. But...
    What if he didn't and he get 2 determination tokens. It is clear he can't rerrol the succes dice he threw that action but can he use those tokens to rerrol the ? dice or the wound dice he rolled in that action?
    In the rulebook they sugest this order: wound >succes> ? mark.
    Can you plz help me out if I can rerrol thse dice or only if friday already had his two tokens. It can be a matter of live and death for friday ;)

      hey:) acquired this game just a few weeks ago myself, been learning bits and bobs about it, and just yesterday came across the answer to your question: pretty sure you're meant to discard the cards after use if there is no requirement to shuffle them into the events deck :) and that's fair enough, because you're not likely to run out of them and you don't want the same events happening to you anyway after you solved them once, right:)

      There are no fixed elements to the game, beyond the scenario objective (which you would find out as soon as you begin the scenario). Beyond that, event s are drawn from decks randomly - so you will, over the course of this series, be exposed to about 10 or so cards.
