thank you for sharing your thoughts...it is rather eye opening, and like you say, I do declutter to make space for other items....be it clothing or makeup. it is always better to buy thoughtfully but we are so trapped in the cycle of consumerism and seeking external validation thinking that these validations define us, but in reality it does not. still I love your funny outtakes and the slow mo from 8:56,
Wow these thoughts resonated so much with me! I have always loved makeup, it's always illicited a kind of ''kid on christmas eve'' type of feeling in me. But social media has created this constant feeling of missing out. I never feel completely satisfied with what I have, and I end up feeling stuck in a sort of loop of forever filling theoretical carts at different retailers. This makes the pure joy I have for make up more and more short lived. I definitely have a goal of keeping a more curated collection these days and focusing on really enjoying what I have + trying to use it up. And watching videos like these really helps. Glad I found you!
I love makeup and creativity, but I also love seeing people interrogate their relationships with consumerism and critique their field no matter how much they love it. This is my first time watching one of your videos and I definitely appreciate your conscientiousness. I love the fun and creativity of makeup, but I also like finding things that challenge how I think. For what it's worth, you gained at least one subscriber. 😊
It is so much harder now to find accounts that are more focused on makeup application, techniques, just talking about makeup, etc. it seems now it is all about buying new products and demoing them. I can’t always buy new makeup! Same thing happened a few years ago with clothing. It went from showing how to put items in your wardrobe together and discussing new trends to a constant revolving door of new items. It became impossible to find the old content. Glad you made this video.
I have been a beauty content consumer for over a decade now, and I can't express how much this video resonates with me. I've recently bought the few rephr brushes since those were recommended to use with PMG eyeshadows and Oh boy...was i disappointed? Very much so. At the same time, I've bought the rephr, I've also acquired Spectrum Brushes from the KJH collection, and I found it to be far superior. Well done to create and share with us your thoughts. X
love these introspective chats through the lens of makeup. as a pisces it's my favorite place to be, so don't apologise or ever let low view count sway you from making content like this! it might have less views numerically but sometimes it has more value to the people that do watch than maybe a lip swatch video. also i have always wondered about rephr brushes. thanks for answering that! i will continue to use my lovely zoeva brushes that i also bought because of youtube lol. i definitely am also guilty of the 'decluttering to buy more' mindset. i'm currently selling some of my makeup on depop so that i can obtain more PMG makeup lol. it's so interesting to see the shift in the beauty community and this video has got me thinking about the subtle advertisements now embedded in the content i watch. appreciate the thought you put into all your videos, whether lighthearted or more!
Great topic! Those Rephr brushes were always very suspicious to me... like.. they constantly have offers and sales (wasn't it like 50% off for BF??). Certain influencers also spilled the tea about how much commission they are getting (20-30%). Yet, the company wants me to believe these brushes are HANDMADE in Kumano, from finest goat hair (they claim it's a mix of saikoho and sokoho....). The math isn't mathing! Not at their scale! I would be willing to bet that they are not handmade at all, because I just can't imagine artisans in Kumano deciding to work for rephr and getting paid peanuts, when they have so many other reputable companies they could work for (Chikuhodo, Hakuhodo, Koyudo, Mizuho...). I also remember Rephr's claims, when they started back in 2019... "we, 3 male engineers who know nothing about makeup, love efficiency, so we were not satisfied with the idea that a person needs 12 brushes to do beautiful makeup". Apart from the patronizing tone, they were essentially saying "look - we will make a small curated brush set, that will suit all your makeup needs". That was their initial marketing shenanigans. 1 year later, they were spawning brushes left and right (there are currently 18 eye brushes and 13 face brushes on their website). Where is that efficiency again?? Ok rant over 😅 Congratz on 1k gurl!!! Keep it up!!!
Yep, everything said here is right. It’s also really healthy to question things (e.g., “How can they sell brushes at this scale and this price if they’re handmade in a country with costly labor like Japan?”). A lot of clothes “made in Italy” are made my low skilled Chinese laborers in sweat shops that just happened to be located in Italy instead of any other country. I think it’s also really important to be cynical and skeptical when evaluating any kinds of claims.
I love this so much! Completely agree - I want to find balance too. Thinking of making a video to reference yours while focusing on the ADHD/Grief/Depression coping side of consuming so much makeup and fashion.
I’m enjoying your inventory videos and this take as well. It’s been clear their consumption is very different than consumers who actually part ways with our money to get these items.
This resonates with me on many levels. When you mentioned a creator who was decluttering limited editions cause she couldn’t use them on camera, I thought .. ok that’s good, I am not the only one who had “reaction” to such behaviour . Its so transactional and it is just not for me. But honestly I was a bit disappointed with YTuber I watched and it made me think more how consciously or unconsciously we develop “relationships” with influencers, go with their recommendations and how easily is to get swept into and forget that they are called influencers for a reasons. Now there are loads of great people on YT, I am just more clinical in my channel choices
Yes! So happy you could relate ❤️ There are still people I watch and enjoy like Hannah Louise Poston, she is definitely a role model for me in my spending mindset!
Great topic, brilliant thoughts! I absolutely agree..... both in relation to the influencers as well as my own behavior. Would love to see you and other UA-camr do more tutorials and less "new favorites". I'm totally guilty constantly buying new stuff although I only have one face!!! How many foundations do I "need"? Other examples besides 'Rephr' brushes are Lilysilk clothes, Currentbody LED masks and Dermatica Tretinoin. It seems there is no influencer on this planet who doesn't advertise these products. Have a great day, you beautiful lady! Love from Germany, Sabine 😘
My rephr brushes were underwhelming- and got scratchy very quickly. My Sonia G brushes made them obsolete- but I do have some synthetic $8 brushes for cream products as well from various brands that are also better than the rephr brushes.
@@Aijingaling the issues you spoke about are the same ones that have really reduced who I watch on UA-cam anymore. Lots of first impressions content is a big red flag for me now. I want useful reviews or comparisons like you do with the Lisa E or Kackie Carmody still does deep dive content but not many people do - otherwise it’s just content for content sake trying to sell me things. I don’t begrudge people making a living but it’s not content that is useful to me, especially if it feels fake. There’s one larger luxury UA-camr in particular who I followed when she was starting and then a year or more ago had to stop - I felt like she had almost tricked us into relying on her then she got big and the useful content entirely stopped. Like, entirely.
That’s completely fair! I can see the face brush I have is very densely packed but it sheds a lot when I use it :( and I think I just don’t notice a different between using that and my other synthetic brushes :) I’ve only tried one so I’m not an expert. Everyone likes different things :)
Love your videos. And agree with pretty much everything you said. I would say that I don’t agree with you on make up brushes. Natural hair make up brushes like rephr will shed naturally especially when you first use them. Synthetic brushes like Kitco do not shed. But the shedding is not a reflection of quality.
Very interesting approach of the subject, I really enjoyed your video and your opinion and perspective on makeup content. Btw, you look gorgeous 😊 what LE lipstick are you wearing?

The sad truth is, those videos get more views and subscribers. 🤷🏻♀️
I love this and I still watch videos for the art of makeup and I love to see people just love and use the makeup they have❤
🥹 we need to use more of what we love rather than buying new ❤️

Yep, agreed. And she is very upfront how her relationships with make up differs from average folk like us.
I really appreciated this! It really mirrors what I’m going through at the moment. And I really enjoyed your Marilyn video too.

It was affair liner, intrigue on top, then silent sun gloss. The combo ended up a lot more pink than I was expecting which was odd 🤔
