What I really like about this technique is not only do I save air, and keep focus on my breathing, but it's like an underwater meditation. Focusing on my breath like that also helps me stay calm if I start to get a little panicky.
You are right when you say it's like an underwater meditation. I feel exactly the same when I dive. That's way scuba diving has so much in common with "on-land" meditation or yoga. Studies say you cannot be stressed and breathe slowly at the same time. And it works the other way around... In other words, if you "control" your breathing, you control your dive ...
Practicing breathing techniques on land is definitely a powerful tool you can use right away once you hit the water! (Please note we don't recommend any breathing skills development underwater) But what also helps build or restore self-confidence is getting familiar with your gear. But we've already mentioned it, haven't we? :-)
This is great! Please post more videos. I’m going to be scuba diving for the first time in September and this has really helped me understand what to expect!
Hi Subarna, I’ve just created a new video about the 2 most common buoyancy mistakes beginner divers do underwater and how to fix them (quickly). I hope you’ll enjoy the video. Feel free to write your opinion in the comments section of the new video. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/jQZA3n2Y2gI/v-deo.html

Patrick I am struggling with not letting any air out of my nose in my mask by accident... I am focusing on breathing through the mouth, but a little bit gets through my nose even if I try. Then my mask fills with water :/ how do I fix this problem
What if my lung capacity is large and with this rate of breathing I consume air very quickly?what happens when I take longer intervals between each exhale or inhale. Thanks
you need to fit the breathing technique for you. 4 seconds in and 6 seconds out is an arbitrary number. everyone has different size lungs. the point of the video is to take slow and steady breaths.
Breathing techniques help not only improve air consumption but also restore self-confidence. If you add meditation, you have the full recipe for happiness under the water! :-)
When I first started 2 years ago, I kept asking about my breathing tempo, and I got answers like "you'll get it eventually" from my friends and "Breathe like you're smoking a cigarette" from my instructor (what?) amongst others. This is so much more helpful, just straight numbers,
Thank you I had a hard problem finding the right amount of breaths to take because they didn’t really tell me that when going diving so thank you for that
You are welcome! I'm glad this short breathing workshop could help you. Please bear in mind this 4-to-6 breathing ratio is just a flexible reference. Feel free to adjust it according to your body and your needs. I recommend to practice this breathing exercise at the surface. Why? If you think too much about your breathing underwater, it may have the opposite outcome and stress you out. Practicing this exercise a few times on land before each dive will bring you the best results. Enjoy your diving! :-)
Got you! Thanks for the reference. I've already watched the video from Kelly Ash, you are mentioning above, in the past and I definitely recommend it! It's a great one and it's really useful!
Hi Pandit. Sorry about that. And thanks for informing us about it! I fixed the problem. The link should work just fine now. Enjoy the training! :-) www.airconsumptionscuba.com/training-sheet

Excellent and useful video. Thank you.

Thank you 🙏
If one's exhalation is slower, wouldn't one tend to sink?
This really helped on my recent scuba trip. Thank you. Was able to come back with 30-40bar more
how do you keep your buoyancy level when doing this technique? Wouldn't you go up and down?
You can’t. But how many times during a dive you need to maintain perfect buoyancy?

never hold your breath when your scuba diving!
He can hold if he stay the same depth for better buoyancy:)

This is a really nice way to put it ❤️
Lesson #2, now put regulator in yr. mouth and practise same breathing technique on land.

Really its very useful 🥰👍👍🙏
Thank you very much for the video. I will try underwater ;)
Inhale 6 seconds
Exhale 6 seconds
Thank you so much! ❤ I'll practice because I have a scuba diving session within two weeks 😊 Last year I panicked and I couldn't breathe at all.
Outstanding, always good to have a baseline. Thank you
Wow ! Thank you for structuring it Patrick ! I always keep working on my breathing so this helped a lot .
Thank you very much. The breathing technic helps me a lot.
Thank you very much for the information and helpful training sheet and resources! 💖
Thanks for this video. As a student still learning this will help a lot.
Btw, I subscribed to your channel.
You're welcome! Happy you find this video useful. Enjoy your diving course! ;-)

did you get his ig?
Excellent, thank you!
Thank you so much Patrick, this was helpful 👍
Better points than most I have seen.
Cool channel
Thank you ❤
easier than 5/10. although a guy did get 2hours off a normal tank..
2 hours. That's impressive! Was it only with a 12l-tank?
80CF , so about a 12L. Copy paste isnt working, search "Decrease Air Consumption and Increase Dive Time" by Kelly Ash.
What do you mean more exactly by "copy paste"?
I cant copy a link and paste it to the comments.
Got you! Thanks for the reference. I've already watched the video from Kelly Ash, you are mentioning above, in the past and I definitely recommend it! It's a great one and it's really useful!
thanks, helped me alot
do you breathe in through nose exhale mouth?
you can't inhale with nose with a scuba mask ;)
Thank you again great info you are the man
Keep rocking coach
i get dizzy if i breathe in for 4 seconds and out for 6. seems like im consuming way too much air than necessary.
Me too. When I focus on my breathing like this I get very lightheaded. Not sure how other people do it
You should inhale slowly to avoid inhaling too much air.
