      What's funny is in the Broadway musical, Pulitzer is impressed enough that he hires Jack as a political cartoonist (of course, in the musical, Jack and Pulitzer's daughter also fancy each other, so there's more layers and musical logic going on there).

      Riley W What makes it even sadder is back then many children were illiterate. Kids would have to stop going to school or not go at all so they could support their families working as newsboys or in factories where their lives were sometimes at stake. They would hire children because they had tiny fingers that they could stick in machines to fix them. As a result many of them lost fingers. There were several other safety risks as well. That period was an awful time to live in if you were poor. People would be desperate to feed their families and the jobs they would have to take to support them were rough. This is part of the reason the US has such strict child labor laws.

    I actually have a deep connection with Newsies. When I was in sixth grade, I lived in Indiana, and hated every single second of school-I heard ' is this how you acted at your old school? ' from one of my teachers, and got in trouble for stupid stuff, like fidgeting-which I do when I'm nervous; which I was nearly every day-regularly, and I wasn't even a bad kid; I was too nervous to feel the need to act out. Indiana was my version of a ' big city ', because, before I moved there, I'd only ever lived in a same small town. In the small town, I'd gone to school with the same kids all my life-so, I knew pretty much everyone in my grade. Because of the unfamiliar environment, and the fact that I didn't really talk to anyone without them approaching me first out of fear, I didn't make many friends in Indiana and lost contact with all of the kids that I at least knew in my hometown-I'm still not the best at keeping up relationships. Anyway, I'll forever love my sixth grade music teacher in Indiana because she introduced all of us to Newsies. First, though, she showed us a clip of the original cast of the Broadway show performing at the Tony Awards. I was confused, but slightly intrigued that people dressed up in costumes and sang for something other than a school play; it was like watching a movie, in a way, but so much cooler.
    I ended up auditioning for the school's musical that year. I didn't get a part, of course, but Newsies is what made me obsess over musicals and all that, in the first place. Newsies was the first real musical that I ever saw-both on a screen and when I went to see the touring cast as an early birthday present. I'm not gonna claim that Newsies ' saved me ' or anything because I was never really in a situation where saving was necessary, in the first place. But I ended up finding online friends who were into the movie, too, and felt a lot less lonely. So, yeah; I owe my current obsession with theatre both to my 6th grade music teacher in Indiana and to Newsies.

      When I was 6 years old I was in my second musical. I kinda just did it because my parents liked hearing me sing and my nest friends did it. As a cast, we took a trip to New York. We were going to Broadway to see newsies. I don’t remember much of it, just that I was never more intrigued in my entire life. There was one guy on stage who could sing like I had never heard. A man who I would later find out is named Jeremy Jordan. A man that inspired me and long story short this is now my favorite musical.

    Lyrics:
    This is the story you wanted to write
    Well, tonight is the night that you can
    Just get this done and by dawn's early light
    You can finish the fight you began
    This time we're in it to stay
    Think about seizing the day
    Think of that train as she rolls into old Santa Fe
    Tell 'em I'm on my way
    See old man Pulitzer snug in his bed
    He don't care if we're dead or alive
    Three satin pillows are under his head
    While we're beggin' for bread to survive
    Joe, if you're still countin' sheep
    Wake up and read 'em and weep
    You got your thugs with their sticks and their slugs
    Yeah, but we got a promise to keep
    Once and for all, something tells me the tide'll be turnin'
    Once and for all, there's a fire inside me that won't stop burnin'
    Now that the choices are clear, now that tomorrow is here
    Watch how the mighty will fall, for once and for all
    This is for kids shinin' shoes in the street
    With no shoes on their feet every day
    This is for guys sweatin' blood in the shops
    While the bosses and cops look away
    This is to even the score
    This ain't just Newsies no more
    This ain't just kids with some pie in the sky
    This is do it or die, this is war
    Once and for all, we'll be there to defend one another
    Once and for all, every kid is our friend, every friend a brother
    Five thousand fists in the sky, five thousand reasons to try
    We're goin' over the wall, better to die than to crawl
    Either we stand or we fall, for once, once and for all

    So weird that this version doesn't have the "There's change comin' once and for all" part. Glad the Broadway version added that.

    This version of the song is my favorite. Though the Broadway version is great, I find it a bit too angry sounding. By the end of that version, it sounds like they are going to murder Pulitzer.

    • @kayleighwilson1551
      @kayleighwilson1551 2 роки тому +1

      I love the Broadway version, too, but I agree. It sounded too angry for me 😂 Which I get it’s something to be angry about, but I feel like this version was more ‘ we’re angry at how kids are being treated unfairly and forced to work in unfair conditions as a whole ‘ whereas the Broadway was more ‘ we’re angry at Pulitzer and are gonna do whatever we have to do to win the strike. ‘ Idk if that makes sense, but what I’m getting at is it’s different levels of anger and I just feel like the movie went about at least this song better 😂

    Wow, I loved this song when it was the only version, but since the broadway musical it's become clear how unepic this one is in comparison.

    • @Emma314
      @Emma314 5 років тому +4

      Forbidden Les Mis I agree that the broadway one was better but in the movie they actually have kids (rather than 20-30 year olds). And without this great movie we wouldn’t have the incredible stage musical.

    Re: the discussion on "taking off hats for a lady" and the alleged death of manners, (which I guess has no reply buttons because Google Plus). I think it's a nice period touch to have in the movie. But in the present? Men are people. Women are people. Why would you take off your hat to show you respect someone just for what gender they are? And is taking off your hat as a sign of respect even in general use anymore? Also, I hold open doors for women all the time, but I also do the same for men. That's how I think of "manners."

    • @robertlanglois184
      @robertlanglois184 9 років тому +8

      Its not just about people being people. Its about women becoming a lady's and male becoming a men. We as a society have cut off what that means. Its more than just respect. The sexes of society no longer know our roles that we play. Everything is gray. Correct if I am wrong, but now people are wanting to make neutral gender bathrooms... If I can not just take a piss without a women being there I think I am going to go crazy...This society is sick....Its going so far as to say that its wrong to be a man, or a women to be a lady. Women are a weaker sex, and I have to be so specific because if I am not I will get my head bitten off...They are weaker physically..I could go on and on, but I am not...Unfortunately I have no real solutions, but I feel all I can do is just mourn for our broken society.

      How did this polite disscution opportunity turn into a angry and hate filled yelling and threats? Can't people actually have a real conversation on a topic such as manners and gender without it turning into nothing more that trying to drowned the other person out?

      Is it bad that I don’t like Catherine either? Jack has enough to think about! And I wish they stressed his friendship with Davey more bits that’s prolly a way unpopular opinion
