As someone who listens to a lot of heavy music, there is something undeniably refreshing about the vocal performance in this song. Courtney has such a powerful, expressive and unique scream. I also love the horror vibe of the music video.
You have a lot of nerve listening to music you're interested in on your own channel, mister! 😄😄😄. Best. Outro. Ever. Courtney LaPlante explained this song in an interview: "This song was never intended to be a single," LaPlante reveals. "We wrote it in January to be an 'angry' pallet cleanser on an otherwise dark, moody atmospheric album. Our mission statement was: 'Let's make the most ridiculous song that we can.' When we had the opportunity to tour Europe in March, we decided to put the unfinished song in our set, since we enjoyed it so much. Until our tour was cut short due to the pandemic, it was the highlight of each night."
Also, they've decided to finally release it as a single because this is the only song on the upcoming album that has *only* unclean vocals, and during the pandemic they weren't able to record in a proper studio, and in their home studio they only had microphones that are good for screaming.
Went though a phase of hunting down amazing heavy bands with female vocals. Spirit box is great. Maybe try some Rolo Tomassi or Oathbreaker? I'd really like to see what you feel about Second Son of R by Oathbreaker specifically. Everything you are watching on here is my jam. Cool to hear someone musically educated provide commentary.
Two great recommendations, try Rolo Tomassi - "Stage Knives" live @ scala / "Flood Of Light" live @ scala and Oathbreaker - "Needles In Your Skin" live @ Audiotree / "The Abyss Looks Into Me'' Live @ Petit Bain
Sunday Funday videos! So glad you're having fun with this and making a little more pocket change lately. :] Like you, I prefer when they have clean and harsh. However, I can do all harsh just fine too haha. Even though this is the newest song it's not enjoying the staying power of the others but it's really fun
Repeat listens, subtle differences every verse, layers of atmosphere. Every song can't be stock Spiritbox. I had the same impression on first listen. I bet you like it a lot more after 4 or 5 more listens. Keep up the good work.
Thrilled that you had a chance to catch this one buddy. This one is reminiscent to Belcarra for me - bass really drives it along. Heavy as hell - Courtney has really stepped it up with the last few tracks they released.
For the last two weeks I've been bingeing on this song and I love it because it is so to the point aggressive. It just hits so right, and Courtney is fantastic (fangirling hard on her). I've been hoping you would react to it and you dropped it right on my BDay, since it is past midnight here in Europe!
I think it was meant to be just straight up dark and heavy. Just a short single to build some energy or kinda just change the mood. Alot of heavy bands have these types of songs thrown in their albums. Usually when you see a short song like that from a heavier band you can usually expect that it's just gonna be straight up heavy and brutal, and I think that's just the purpose, to hype people up. Spirit box is getting heavier though in pretty much every song they release now, but they are still creative and know how to make their songs interesting. Im sure they added this song in for a reason and will probably put in a specific section of the album.
Sure someone else will have already mentioned it, but Spiritbox explained in one of their live streams that the reasons for all the vocals being harsh / heavy this time is that the song was recorded at home during the lockdown. The usually record the clean vocals with particular mic's which are at their producer's studio, which they couldn't go to during the lockdown. I also prefer their usual mix of clean and harsh vocals - yet I do really like this tune too.
the weird sounds are usually called Gojira scrapes. draggin the pic across the strings from high strings to lower lightintly fretting a harmonic bar on the fretboard
Bryan, as a fellow composer/producer myself, I can respect your opinion on this one. However, I think the intention of this song was to be just quick, in your face and aggressive. Personally, I appreciate that they change it up. They actually did the same thing on their EP (that has The Mara Effect 1/2/3) with the song Aphids. It's a good contrast on an album to have. I think it would probably make more sense if they released an album and this song was like the 2nd or 3rd track, in between songs that have that typical Spiritbox heavy/melodic ratio. Either way, love your reactions, dude!
If you want a display of great technical ability mixed with a ridiculous amount of heaviness whilst being very groovy, check out Slaughter to Prevail "Demolisher".
This kind of style can be really nice with some other more interesting elements so you might want to give it a shot for some future bands, my personal favorite is Australian act D.V.S.R. particularly their song Unconscious, they do have this sort of rhythmic Djenty style but with the added dimension of a *REALLY* competent rapper as the main vocalist which as you can imagine, goes like PB&J with a strong but not overly complicated rhythmic style. Hope you can check em out later, even on your own time not necessarily as a reaction video.
Was this just too "in your face" for you? This song is absolutely awesome. You can't assume that because they have done mellow interludes in other songs, this isn't those other songs. This couple with the video are just perfect in my opinion. This song is short because it doesn't need changes. I think the song was kept shorter because of the idea of it.
Variety is the spice of life and by no means would I ever suggest that a band *should* change their vision of their own writing. However pertaining to my personal biases in my casual listening, yes I think this song was too "in your face" for me. I appreciate what it did but doesn't rank above the other Spiritbox songs that I've been exposed to.
I think you you should check out the band Courtney was in before Spiritbox. IWRESTLEDABEARONCE. She was only apart of the last two albums. Hail Marry and Late for Nothing. I’m sure it’s been suggested to you plenty already. But I shall add to it. 😎 And keep doing your thing. I appreciate your commentary.
I love the song for that reason, tbh. Short and sweet. Perfect summer single. Definitely not my favorite, but it's such a fun song it gets a pass for me lol. I totally hope/expect to see the song extended on the future album, or maybe a part two?
Never heard of Spirit Box before, but I noticed a lot of people talking about this song. Yeah, this song didn't really win me over. I'm sure most of their songs aren't like this, though.
Yeah this song is alot different then their usual stuff. Courtney can switch from clean to harsh vocals on the spot and she's great at both. This band does have their own sound and they usually have alot of variety in their music. Its not usually this heavy, but it still gets heavy though
When I heard the live/demo version of it, I already was surprised by the song not having any clean vocals. That time they called it "Holy Moly".... It is one of 2 songs where they don't have a clean singing part... I get that this can be kind of disappointing if you wait for this. But at the same time, the surprise is that there is NO clean vocal, it constantly hits when you expect it to slow down or chill down. It simply doesn't. And yes, the 2 moments you got really hit hard. The song is more in the line with e.g. "Belcarra", but even harder. Also, the idea of using the Amen-break style d'n'b passage and the robotic effect on her voice is kind of surprising, the whole track sounds more "electro" than the other stuff, even the guitar distortion sounds more electro and transistor-distortion-like than their usual guitar sounds. That's kind of cool and keeps them being interesting as a band. You never know, what comes up next from them. This track will sky-rocket nevertheless because of its simplicity type of concept (not despite of it). It already has kind of half a million views in 2 weeks or so. For a band that is self-marketing, this is crazy.
Btw, I first thought, the D'n'B part came twice, too, but later realized, the second time it is the robotic vocal without this beat - that is interesting, because the brain wants to hear the beat underlying and you can even get the impression you heard it twice when it just came once in the whole song. It is a very interesting song in the way that you have to dissect it very carefully and then get, why it does not really get boring or too repetitive. That is kind of great songwriting, because it is like with the classic rock hits, the more you dissect them, the more you find out they are not just ABABABCAB, and sometimes every part has something unique that is not obvious, in production, arrangement, playing... Subconsciously it makes it more interesting without you knowing why...
Ah mate, i thought it was a great song ! Yeah it's unbalanced, yea it's short, but in the context of an album it makes more sense to have songs going far into extreles and not to have all of your songs containing both mellow and harsh parts, on it's own here it's kinda weak (although heavy AF) but when the EP/album comes i think it'll be a blast to hear
Would love to se you react to opeth with hessian peel its a wild song with manny wild and some calm part that totaly changes rythm and yeah its a amazing song
Primarily because I have things that I want to point out or quickly address in that moment. I refuse to pause a song since the completely ruins the careful flow and pacing, disturbing the intended listening experience of a song. For me, I can talk and listen simultaneously and for the viewer, this isn't supposed to replace the original video. If you want to hear the song uninterrupted then go give the band a view on their official video or streaming platform.
Disappointed is what I felt as well on my first listen. And honestly, I thought, "okay, I'll warm up to it after a few more playthroughs", but I honestly really haven't. But reading others' comments that this is an outlier on the upcoming album, I guess I'm glad this isn't indicative of the band's trajectory in general.
You definitely picked the wrong song. I see you’ve looked at Mara Effect and Rule of Nines.... but you should check out Blessed Be. I think that would hit the spot for you.
I felt the same way about this song. I do love the heaviness, but I prefer the contrast in the previous tracks. I'd love to see you react to the playthroughs of Revenant & Guise of Complacency by A Sense of Gravity. They're a great band that doesn't get enough attention.
As someone who listens to a lot of heavy music, there is something undeniably refreshing about the vocal performance in this song. Courtney has such a powerful, expressive and unique scream. I also love the horror vibe of the music video.
This song helped me improve my running pace.

@@666radke yeah, i think the relatively short length compensates for only heaviness and simple progression
brian : "3 minute song, that's ridiculously short for metal"
me : *laughs in grindcore*

*Laughs in SOAD*
*shrieks in grindcore* *

Im adding Destiny Potato/Sordid Pink(They changed their bandname) to the list!
Oathbreaker is so good Reiha is one of my favorite records ever
Those are pick scrapes. Gojira uses it a lot in their songs.

This has been my jam for like a week now. I love the video with her calmly miming the lyrics. Really makes it unsettling.
Repeat listens, subtle differences every verse, layers of atmosphere. Every song can't be stock Spiritbox. I had the same impression on first listen. I bet you like it a lot more after 4 or 5 more listens. Keep up the good work.

Those weird little sounds are pick scrapes. I love when metal guitarists use them in their riffs.
The heavy. From what I understand this is supposed to be the palate cleanser on their upcoming album to break up the dreary emotional vibe
That makes a ton of sense, actually. Sometimes you just gotta have songs like that
you should react to Kardashev - Beyond Sun and Moon [Official Playthrough]
💯

Pretty cool technique. Thank for that info.

Zeal & Ardor - We Can't Be Found
Don't You Dare, Come On Down or Row Row
@@martyngregg2527 Row Row is amazing, and would probably be my top suggestion as an introduction.

The Mara Effect studio version is a MUST watch
Wise choice... This song is HUGE
this kind of gives me Poppy vibes, especially with the electronic influences! if you havent listened to Poppy yet, i would add her to the list!
"Unfortunately the whole song is heavy"😆

Great reaction! Have you heard the new ihsahn song spectre at the feast?
This is probably my least favorite song they have put out but I still love it. I feel like this is just a pit song.
