🔒 Why Watch This Video?
This video is a comprehensive guide that has been meticulously researched and assembled to assist combat veterans like you. We explore the nuances of combat-related PTSD and why it's different from non-combat PTSD, especially when it comes to filing your claim with the VA.
🔥 Combat vs Non-Combat PTSD
It's crucial to frame your PTSD as combat-related, given that combat-related PTSD doesn't require the evidence of a stressor event for you to be eligible for a disability claim. This one detail can significantly streamline the process, saving you both time and stress. We dig deep into the requirements and how you can frame your experiences in the military to make the most robust claim possible.
📑 Navigating the Paperwork
The VA disability claim process can be a bureaucratic nightmare, but we'll guide you through each step, ensuring you know exactly what to do. We'll cover required documents, medical exams, and how to gather compelling evidence to support your claim.
⏳ Timelines and Deadlines
Time can be your worst enemy or your best friend when filing a VA disability claim. We'll discuss how long the VA typically takes to respond to claims, what deadlines you need to be aware of, and what to do if your situation is urgent.
👨⚕️ Medical Support
An important aspect of your claim is the medical evidence. We'll guide you on how to consult with medical professionals who can diagnose and document your combat-related PTSD, thereby strengthening your claim.
👨👩👧👦 Social and Occupational Impacts
Your claim's success may also hinge on how well you can demonstrate the social and occupational impact of your PTSD. We'll share tips and tricks on how to convey these crucial aspects convincingly.

Thank you soooo much I got 70% for mental health 100% over all. You’re amazing!!!
Lay statement help or just a right off the bat 70? Wow... congrats!
@@kacatley9258 no statement help. Everything was in my records already
I've been following you for months and want to thank you for the valuable information you provide. After almost 120 days of filing my claim, I am going to get my first C&P exam for PTSD.
How did it go?
@marcochavanne I had my exam about a month ago. It took about an hour, and I got diagnosed with severe chronic PTSD. I have another C&P exam on Tuesday for Anxiety and Depression. I have more exams coming up for hearing, back issues, sleep apnea, migraines, and other issues. It's been 5 months since I submitted my claim. So it barely started to move on terms of exams.hope this helps.
@@carloscamacho8729 I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I have a long road ahead and am just getting started 15 years after separating.
My claim for ptsd is in the decision stage and I never got a C&p exam but I was diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety and depression by the VA and received care long before I filed my claim. It’s been 8 months since I filed.
I hope your claim gets resolved soon. I got all of my C&P exams for PTSD, Anxiety and Depression. I had not heard of a veteran not going to a C&P exam for a claim. Maybe there is some I don't know a out the process. If it's been 8 months I would call the VA to see if you can get an update other than it's on the decision process.
Unrelated to your video, here.
But because of your clear detailed videos, I went from a 10 percent back rating to 40 percent pluse sciatic lower extremities bilateral factor. Thanks
Yoooooo the glove though 😂
Thisnis the best advice ive heard/seen. To the point and explaining how to report without sounding like a wink and a nod. Too many of these videos either leave out important advice or really sound like they are trying to help people get more rating than they actually have symptoms for. This video just makes sure you don't "shoot yourself in the foot" when dealing with C&P exams and its very helpfull to me. Ill be sharing this with my buddies, my father in law, dad, and step dad
yeah Jordan, check your volume.
Jordan is a beast! Best VA channel.
I had my c&p exam today for my mental health. The Dr. was easy going and he did all the talking. He didn't ask me about my time prior to service, during service or after service. He didn't talk about anything? He said I agree with you having PTSD and said he will put in the remarks that I need "intensive inpatient treatment for my PTSD" I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
When I went to mine it was about 2 hours long, he asked me about prior to service, during service and after service, reviewed my medical evidence along and at the end he said to sum everything up he believes I am occupationally and socially impaired due to my symptoms, I would suggest asking a VCSO or the VA for a copy of the DBQ
Denied twice and won HLR back in April for my PTSD claim. Got my 3rd C&P exam coming up. I’ll take your tips with me! Hopefully things are better this time!
how did it go?
@@montyhades my 3rd C&P exam took place on February 1st and it went much better than the first two. Buuuuutt… the VBA is still dragging their feet on this one. It’s still in the “Evidence Gathering” phase. Freaking ridiculous!
@StarsForVets hopefully the wait it's worthy. Good luck.
Thank you, Jordan, for calling out instruments of war. I was not aware of this. I'll adjust one of my PTSD claims from non combat to combat. Awesome, I also have a motor vehicle claim for non combat.
21-4138 was the form I was told to use for the Lay Statement.
WOW!! No one tells you about all these VA forms and witch ones to use for what. Thank you for this great information!
Solid info and very well explained.
Got 100% P&T PTSD for sitting in a chair as a finance clerk in the Army, I'm so happy, I don't need to work anymore. I was so stressed out, spent 5 years as a finance clerk.
Thank you Jordan !! This is your Brother watching over here Big Island Hawaii !! Thank you
Smoke detector gets me every time 😂
Where in 38CFR does it explain what you talked about, definition of combat related, as pertaining during training or implementation and use of a weapon of war. Thank you.
Great video i will share this info with associates of mine -
Spot on.
I was informed by my VSO that lay support or buddy or personal statements had no weight. Her logic was that the opinions of the psychologist are relied on.
This is great information! Thank you!
I have a question Jordan I filed for PtSd under your guidance thank you and I used the regular statement form as per the instructions, make a difference?
Thanks for everything you do! Can I both report combat (air combat assault training) and non-combat (exposure to death) in one claim?
I like to keep mine surgical strikes to avoid the VA wanting to focus on the less favorable stressor event, personally
My anxiety happened when I was deployed to Afghanistan, got service connected for it for only 10 percent about 15 years ago. My anxiety has gotten a lot worse since, I am currently taking a max dose of medication for my anxiety. If Im going for an increase, will they try to hit me of wih a proof of stressor?
So I submitted a claim for tinnitus and ptsd. After I had the meeting with Va clinician she said I scored severe on PHQ9, GAD7, and PCL5 test. A week later they changed my claim status to: Tinnitus (ringing, hissing in ear)
PTSD and then they put Combat-Related is this good?
My situation. I went in to utilize my local VA healthcare facility for mental health. I got an appointment, had two appointments that resulted in a generalized anxiety disorder and prescribed anti anxiety medication. Will the VA use their own diagnosis to determine my disability rating? Anyway, just curious if someone had a similar experience and how it turned out for them regarding their end result disability rating.
Thanks for your education helping vets. I had a workplace industrial injury to my arm while on active-duty years ago. Non-combat related, but almost lost my whole arm, so I avoid jobs with construction, machinery, etc. It's in my medical records as the repair surgery was done at the base hospital. So, I would need a PTSD diagnosis, lay evidence on form 21-0781. Would my military medical serve as proof of the trauma? Thanks again.
Im missing half a lung and they give me asthma disability, they're insane at the VA
Really good info
I've been on an antidepressant since Kuwait in 2003 with civilian doctors. What if they ask me if I'm on meds? I don't know the first doctor that prescribed it.
I have a VES TELE-C&P appt next week for Depression and Anxiety Secondary to Lymphoma under Pact Act. I was awarded 100 pct temp and 50 pct P&T for sinusitis. The lymphoma is in remission right now. Should I mention the fact that I got approved for SSDI starting in Dec? Does it help the VA claim exam evaluation? Thanks in advance.
It's irrelevant, I wouldn't.
What if you were injured during active duty orders and that injury required surgery and has impacted your physical well-being and mental health being my leg during PT. Could that still a plausible claim to connect it to that injury that I’ve already claimed have a percentage for with the VA already?
Would PTSD qualify one for Individual Unemployability? I read in that case a 70 rating would be paid out at a 100 rating? How could one qualify for that? Thanks for the videos as well!!
Do you just use one trauma/stressor event? Or several on the document?
💎 thank you!
Is the diagnosis prior to filing required? I keep getting mixed information. I'm filing for non-combat PTSD
Ok, so I have a very similar experience to what you're saying. Ive been treated with little improvements for PTSD for almost 10 yrs. I go in for my C&P interview. I have my first panic attack in the office with her. I said I want my wife in the room immediately and I'm not saying another word until she's in here. My wife walks in and asks if I'm upset because I'm talking about my childhood trauma. The examiner asked a couple more questions and the interview was over within 5 mins after the panic attack and my wife coming in. Claim was denied stating it wasn't service connected, AND the examiner didn't say a WORD about my panic attack, I don't think. That was about 3-4 yrs ago. Now what can I do? Before, I only put in a claim, with no Lay Letters or anything, just the medical history after service (which is when I started showing strong symptoms)
Go to Therapy and get everything documented.
@@akaijackson2 I do go to therapy and everything is already documented though. I'm getting ready to re-file another claim, but I don't know what stressors to put down. The constant barrage of incoming mortars, the RPG attack on our helo, or the suicide I witnessed over there. I have no idea which is responsible, or if any of those are responsible for it.
@@Echo_5_Charlie I would say file under depression with ptsd and talk about your nightmares, if you drink talk about that and call the crisis line and talk about it then submit
Make sure you brief your wife on what to say and what not to say. If you mention anything before you join they will say your symptoms are not service connected.
Also, I would squash the childhood trauma stuff. You were probably sunk right then. Has nothing to do with your service. Made for an easy denial.
Just did my C & P exam for MH yesterday morning.
How did it go?
Denied everything non combat ptsd, depression, survival guilt but kept my sleep insomnia at 70%
@@Whobuti585 Sorry to hear that, brother. plan to appeal or HLR?
@DavidRachfordFitness no, sleep insomnia is still a MH rating....so I'm good with 70%...SI is by far one of my biggest issues besides my lumber spine issues.
I have been doing all of my VA claims solo. I have submitted 7. 2 connected at zero and 5 denied. PTSD is number 8, completed last week at my C&P. Have no idea how it went.
My stressor was watching a army kid on a C 141 die in front of me before being transported to Landstuhl Hospital in Germany. Would this be a non combat or combat related? I still have night sweats & nightmares about from the gulf war
If I have already done a C&P exam for PTSD (favorable, but still awaiting a rating), would it be beneficial to submit this as well?
Where is this written? Every other channel I've watched said you absolutely need proof, even if combat related.
Does the VA honor time in the individual ready reserve IRR can events during IRR be qualified for a claim ?
I completed one of these. 😮
Among the many issues to highlight when working to get a 100% PTSD rating is showing that your PTSD is impacting keeping or getting employment.
I was deployed to Germany in 1988 for the NATO Reforger exercise. These were the Cold War days. I almost died due to Carbon Monoxide inhalation from a idling vehicle in the field. I was never the same again. Does this count? I never went to the hospital after the incident.
I would ask you if the event was very stressful and traumatic for you, if so file for it after you get diagnosed and gather any evidence that you were there such as military orders and dd214 speak with a veteran service officer
To get a combat related claim don’t you have to meet all the requirements set to qualify. Like have retired and have 20 years in service?
Those are not qualifiers, brother.
If I am filing for an increase and already filled out the 21-0781 form initially, do I need to fill out again?
I had my c&p ptsd last month, and went to primary VA doctor for general health yesteray. The doctor kept telling me to see psych doctor, should I do it?
And his face was kind of asessing and now thinking of negative vibes about my ptsd. Primary doctor have power to change my c&p and making me go to see phsych a trap?
I am active and claiming for PTSD I lost 2 fellow Marines that I knew well, I won't get into the details but if I were to claim while I am active will I need to provide proof that is what I am confused on it was non combative
Shalom Jordan. Appreciate the information. The volume though is very, very low.
I was diagnosed with PTSD through my VA therapist and now I’m in trauma therapy for it. I’m submitting a claim but don’t know if I should do combat related or not. My trauma stems from having to watch strike footage of bombs that I built, blowing people up, leveling buildings and cities. Don’t even get me started on the propaganda stuff we had to do, but anyway. I’m confused about whether or not I should do combat related, anyone got some insight? On the one hand, I feel like it would be, due to the overall nature of it, but it’s not like I was getting shot at. Idk
Since I didn't submit a statement with my claim, they automatically hit me with the request for proof of stressor. I submitted it along with a personal statement and two witness statements. Wish me the best of luck and this is to let anyone else know that they went straight to asking for proof of stressor
If you have a combat award thats proof of stressor such as Combat Badge, Combat ribbon Purple Heart.
Active duty orders to an AOR.
Just wondering how much of an impact ptsd has on getting a mental health increase for a ptsd diagnosis after already having a service connected condition for mental health conditions?
So I got ptsd , and insomnia and I have a sleep study coming up soon ,and I’m still in active duty, what’s it look like for me and I might medically discharged
Why is "Old Glory" displayed incorrectly? Why are you wearing gloves? Good video for sure.
would a lay statement from my wife Stating things that she witnessed from anxiety to my nightmares being distant.Would that help with my c&p exam . Also, does that statement have to be on that form you're talking about, or can it be written down on a piece of paper. And do I bring that with me to the exam
if i have my employer write a letter on how my PTSD Has drastically affected my employment. Is there a certain form he/she would beed to fill out or is a formal letter fine?
My volume is all the way up bro, gonna need you to either speak up or turn the volume up on your mic
I decind that emotion. Trudat!! Real talk&Nuff Said!!
You need to get your hearing checked and get that VA claim cuz I can hear him perfectly! Lol 😅
I can hear just fine at mid volume.
I thought my speaker was going out. Got this connected to a 200 watt 15” speaker.
Glad my shit still good.
this video is just particularly soft lol
I’ve seen pages everywhere about this and combat ptsd with yours saying that things covered under CRSC can be considered for combat ptsd. Most are saying combat ptsd is only in combat as in engaging the enemy and everything outside of that is non combat related to the Va?? What is right or where is it said the Va goes off of CRSC for things outside of retirement
I guess I’m confused, not only did I complete combat training prior to deploying but also deployed to a combat zone. So one of my stressors resulted from this deployment. We never saw combat. But it would still fall under combat ptsd since it was in a combat zone?
Yes. They can relate your claim even if it was from the training to get ready. The mental stress you place on yourself while in a combat zone can be enough
Thank you so much for responding. I have searched high and low for this answer and have been unable to find it! Thank you!
Where do yall find the exact wording in the CFR38 manual in how the VA defines combat related PTSD?
so if i belive my PTSD is service connected but i dont have anything connected. i did fuel aircraft and they was for army and navy,
Does it have to be combat related ?
Can anyone guide me on how to write a personal statement for my PTSD. I received 50% combat connected, but I know that I already qualify for 70%.
I just do not know how to write one of those letters for the VA. Please
Contact the DAV
Doctor Strange wears gloves like that ...
So will I need a diagnosis of PTSD before I can pursue this claim?
Yep. Go see VA doc for counseling.
Claim depression if you don’t have any in service events. It’s easier to prove than ptsd is
Depression could be viewed as a disqualifier for life insurance whereas PTSD is less likely. Just something to think about
Why does he always wear those brown leather work gloves?
I submitted a personal statement and now i regret it because i may have over explained does that matter at all or is only the evidence from the C&P exam taken into consideration?
I was recently diagnosed for depression “ moderate to severe, yesterday I get a call for a PTSD appointment at the VA, ? I am confused.
No.. go to that appt. and tell them your symptoms .. don't be smiling and cracking jokes, be the same with the nurse and Dr. this could help your claim
For a HLR what do we reference for combat ptsd for a training event simulating war? I’m trying to find it in CFR38
@vaclaims
What is the correct DBQ form for a TBI
Just in time for my appointment for my bdd claim
what's bdd??
Benefits delivery at discharge. You get rated thr day after you leave service.
In still active duty but you can file your claim six months before seperation
@@bybcous oh ok, I never heard of that.. I wonder if it's new, I got out 30 years ago.. thanks

Volume level isnt it for this video. Hard to hear
Is TBI and PTSD be rated the same?
Super quite
How do you do for anxiety?
Apply for generalized anxiety, but be careful. I did and they combined my insomnia with GAD and my rating stayed the same.
What if you already have a rating but its lower than what it should be?
I can’t hear anything
The volume is fine…. Ya’ll niggas def.
It is a bit low but just have to turn up your main vol.
Im.combat veteran anc submitted a lay statement, articles of my unit in the combat zone and a phys diagnosis. Ive done 2 virtual C&P exams with VES and they just requested another with Optum. Doesn't seem promising
why would they waste the money for the exams if they didn't think there was something.
Do you keep your emotions out of it? If they want to know my story it’s not easy to tell.
What if you come from the era of shut tf up and do your job and there’s no medical documentation while in service?
If a veteran is 100% P&T of mental health- can he or she work ( W-2 Job ), without being penalized ?
LMAO. If you were that bad off how could you work. .
Depends on your injuries, i know a 100% vet, he works full time in an excellent jpb.
Case by case .
@@AELwriter What if it’s solely on mental health?
Why are you wearing work gloves?
What if the main reason for your PTSD was your commanding officer fabricated evidence, denied your Captain's mast, and railroaded you out of the Navy on bogus charges that were later overturned by a board of review?
Hey Jordan what if you witnessed Sep 1 -1 in person and then joined. I watched from the roof of a parking garage with a dozen or so people. I saw everything from about 2 miles away in NJ. It was crazy. Over 60 ppl from my town were lost and then I joined. I still think about it all the time. Does that fall under combat related? Thanks for all your work brother!
You would need a stressor event that occurred during your service
Would this be a Combat-Related Special Compensation claim? (CRSC) Or just a regular claim that’s combat related? Is there a difference?
I am already 100% P&T so I’m not trying to increase my rating because I know it can’t happen. I was diagnosed with tinnitus, insomnia and sleep apnea, BUT none of them were accounted for which I was surprised, especially for not getting tinnitus because I was a Radioman, having to listen to high volume frequencies.
Im rated 50% for PTSD non combat. How to I get a higher rating?
Go get an increase in medications
Hey Angel face do you mind if i email you? i've a question about your rating.
Why do you wear gloves?
How am I supposed to have a diagnosis first, if I haven’t filed a claim yet? I see that so often in all of these claims videos. You should mention that you can get a diagnosis at your first c&p, it doesn’t have to be preexisting.
Because often times if you file a claim with no diagnosis, you won’t even get a C&P exam, just a fat denial letter straightaway
@@vaclaimsacademy I’m sure that is the case for some, especially if they are filing after a year, but I’m just saying it isn’t the only possible scenario. None of the 7 claims I filed had preexisting diagnoses, and they were all approved, but I filed immediately when I got out. I just wanted to make that clear to people. Don’t get me wrong, you have a great channel, but if I knew what I know now, I probably would have been discouraged to file because I didn’t have preexisting diagnoses.
