Long tones are a fundamental exercise for trumpet players to improve their sound quality and technique. However, it's not just a physical exercise that can be mindlessly repeated to achieve a better sound. To truly progress towards a better, fuller, richer sound, trumpet players must be conscious during their long tone practice.
Conscious long tone practice means asking yourself pertinent questions like: Is my posture good? Am I in tune? Am I resonating? Are my lips responding? How is my tone? How can I make it better? What kind of sound do I want? Etc.
To answer these questions, trumpet players must pay attention to their body and how it feels when playing. Posture is essential to proper breathing and support, which is the foundation of a good sound. Being in tune requires an awareness of pitch, both in relation to the rest of the ensemble and to the natural tuning tendencies of the trumpet. Resonance is the quality of sound that is produced when the air column in the trumpet vibrates in harmony with the player's lips. This requires an awareness of the player's embouchure and how it responds to changes in air speed, pressure, and lip placement.
The tone is the sound quality of the trumpet, and it can be affected by factors such as the player's equipment, air support, and lip vibration. To improve the tone, trumpet players must experiment with the embouchure, airspeeds, and pressure levels. They must also listen carefully to the sound they produce and adjust accordingly.
Ultimately, conscious long tone practice requires a deep understanding of the sound that the player wants to produce. This is where the artistic aspect of playing the trumpet comes in. Every player has a unique sound, and long tone practice is an opportunity to develop and refine that sound. Trumpet players must ask themselves questions like: What kind of sound do I want? Do I want a bright, edgy sound or a warm, dark sound? How can I achieve that sound?

We do this everyday in my band hall. We also do slurs up and down. One of the slurs we do is eighth note slurs from low c to high e.
