Of course from someone who's on the other side of things, we'd consider Trump to be the one interested in identity politics. @@22BAANA22 from what I understand - and I don’t live in America - Biden/Harris between them had very much perpetuated and extended the liberal progression/woke agenda during office. The fact that Harris didn’t talk about the trans issue during the Election is hardly surprising: it affects a tiny fraction of the population and for a huge swathe of conservative-leaning voters it’s a massive turn off. So she clearly thought that it was best to dial down on that during her campaign: no point in reminding voters of policies that are very unpopular with a significant proportion of the electorate when you want them to vote for you! Trump, however, wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to play the identity politics card and use it as a stick with which to beat Harris & the Democrats. The idea that somehow because Harris studiously avoided the trans issue during her 100 day campaign…whereas Trump made a lot of it meant that the Democrats weren’t associated with these ideas and policies in the minds of the voters is very questionable logic. The cut through that Trump’s “Harris is for they/them, Trump is for you” campaign achieved says a lot. Democrat advisers must have thought that voters’ memories are like goldfishes’ and they can only remember what’s happened in the few weeks of the campaign and not the previous four years. It's time to put American citizens first. I could care less what happens to Ukraine.
You know that noone made America do this? Since after the war their whole economic miracle was built upon the military industrial complex (not an insult, this lifted millions out of poverty). But because of this the American military is huge and they've put their bases all over the world on purpose, they put money into nato on purpose, because it's about power. Noone can ever attack America, noone has a hope of defeating America or going against them as long as their military holds control around the world. Some rich politicians decided this, and the poor American tax payers who want nothing to do with war have to pay. But it's not like Europe or anyone else is 'making' America fund Nato.

They group people into blocks, groups, strata etc without knowing a single thing about what drives them to vote. And like most of the politicians they support they haven't learn the basic rule, don't insult or belittle the people you are trying to convince to vote for you. In the final analysis they are reduced to calling them deplorables, garbage, not-college educated (read uneducated). Which loops back around to the first point, they are very comfortable, and self-satisfied, for the most part millionaires, trying to predicting what people who like month to month will do.
Let's be honest: Harris ran a terrible campaign. From avoiding discussing the top two issues according to Americans, to avoiding the most popular person in media, to gross mismanagement of spending, this was a historical campaign failure.
I wish it was just American. Far too many of the electorate are voting for their favourite character on a TV show. It's not just ignorance of politics, it is the indulgence of that ignorance. It is deeply worrying.
It's not the American people you should have no faith in but their politicians. You can't treat the American people with contempt and then expect their vote. Keir should take note.
Does anyone remember Trump at one of his rallies encouraging to get the vote out saying, "you only have to do it once'. İs this the end of American democracy?
Twenty years ago, I was in the audience for a lecture on countries as personality types. Two countries were on the absolute extremes for patriarchy and theocracy. They were Iran and the USA. This is who America is. Trump is purely a symptom, not a cause.
Do you have a link (or a way of getting that? As a psychologist, it sounds like just a fun thought game, with very little real world relevance. Saudi would be way up there, past USA for sure. Women can vote etc. I’d love to see it to be proven wrong.
@Dude0000 No, alas. Maybe it was that Iran and the USA scored exactly the same. Saudi qualifies, for sure. The key point was that both countries were so much the same in temperament, akin to two rams in a field, butting heads, and hence no surprise why they always do.
The reason you called it wrong Rory is because you, the podcast and most of us who listen to it are politically aware, so are most of our friends - we're in our own echo chamber. I run a small business in the "shires" and the people aged under 35 who work with me all love Trump and think that the media are "unfair" on him. They live on a diet of reality show's and 20-second attention spans - that's Trump's world and I'm afraid Rory, "The Mooch", Katty Kay and Alastair simply don't understand it. The fact that there's so little substance to him and his people is irrelevant to his supporters. Let's hope he is really gone in 4 years.
Not saying you’re wrong, but to play devil’s advocate. I’m 32 and live in the shires - I’m nothing like this and neither are a majority of my friends (spanning late 20s to mid-30s) - none of them like Trump.

It's time to put American citizens first. I could care less what happens to Ukraine.
Went it comes to the subject of US tax payer they keep their mouths shut.

Although, to give them some credit they are as inaccurate as the rest of the media for the simple reason they do not live the lives of the people they appear to want to predict will do X or Y.
