The "talking pig thing" is Peter Davison, just before he took on the role of Doctor number five in Doctor Who. At the time he was married to the gal you couldn't remember the name of which is Trillion - Tricia McMillan - or - in other words - the actress Sandra Dickinson. Three minutes to Belgium!
Hotblack Desiato: The character is named after an estate agency(realty) based in Islington, with branches throughout North London. I remember seeing their signage on houses for sale.
Dougls Adams asked them if he could use the name. After the book came out, they sometimes had phone calls complaining they stole the name from the book.
if you can have a listen to the radio version. This was the first version and is slighly different to the following BBC TV version - When Douglas Adams wrote the radio version the BBC were surprised as to how popular it was, and this decided them to transfer it to TV which is what you are watching now.
7:14 - The 'Dish of the Day' is played by Peter Davidson, who soon after took the part of The Doctor in Doctor Who. At the time of filming, he was married to Sandra Dickinson, who in playing Trillian.
They're also the parents of Georgia Moffett (Davison's real surname being Moffett) who is married to David Tennant who of course also played The Doctor. She also played The Doctor's Daughter in the Tennant Doctor Who episode of that name. Mmm, come to think of it all seems a bit incestuous...
6.00 Disaster Area are where it diverts from the radio version, they're probably based on Pink Floyd who were starting to break apart after releasing The Wall in 1979. In fact, Douglas Adams was good friends with the band and played guitar on stage with them in one of the Earls Court Pulse gigs - on his 42nd birthday😉. There's a photo of this is drummer Nick Masons book ' Inside Out' . David Gilmour played at a memorial service for Adams following his sudden death in 2001. And in the Original Records 1979 vinyl album version - very close to the TV one - there's the line 'Ford...do you realise that robot can hum like Pink Floyd?'....I have a theory that Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, may have been the inspiration behind Oolon Calluphid who writes the books on the non-existence of God. Dawkins was married to actress Lalla Ward. Ward was previously married to Dr Who actor Tom Baker starring alongside him in the show as Romana. Douglas Adams was script editor on the show in the late 1970's in their era, so its possible?. Adams wrote the Dr Who story 'Pirate Planet'.
More importantly, he wrote "City of death" which is an all time classic. As for the radio version, I preferred that to hotblack's spaceship. In the radio series, the ship they steal is the flagship of an enemy battle fleet heading to our galaxy. An alien race called the hagunenons who's DNA is so unstable, they evolve randomly into things constantly. Or as the book put it. "If, say, the coffee was just out of reach, it's likely to evolve into something with far longer arms, but which is quite incapable of drinking the coffee" This made them jealous of "Filthy rotten stinking samelings" as they called all stable life forms.
Just an FYI. The Dish of the Day is played by Peter Davidson, one of the Doctor Who's and Hotblack's Bodyguard is none other than Dave Prowse. That's right OG Darth Vader himself from the origonal trilogy.
'The animal that wants to be eaten' is a book about thought experiments which was inspired by this scene. A rif on the old question whether it's ethical to eat meet.
And Darth Vader himself makes an appearance, along with Doctor Who. For audiences at the time of Broadcast these were the few details promoted by the BBC. The story remained unknown to anyone who had not listened to the Radio Show, or read the subsequent book. Even then, minor differences made for a treat. The planned sequel, which would start with a Cricket Match was never made.
Thank you. You have my respect. Your sign off with the word 'Peace' is a rare mark of respect. The Two Finger gesture with nails out is commonly used by North Americans instead. I want to punch my monitor when this mark of disrespect is given. The Agincourt Salute is the harshest hand gesture there is. It would be worse than flipping the bird to an audience. Thank you for being a gentleman.
About 1980 the BBC play for today broadcast a play called the flipside of dominick hyde (the later another flip for Dominick) I thought it was so good I was hoping they'd make a series out of it which they never did, then less than a year later hitchhikers came out so I wasn't disappointed in the end, funny thing is I was just about to watch the DVDs when you started to review it and thought it would be more fun seeing your reaction which I'm enjoying very much

no, for whatever reason the episode and my reaction to it, a whole 1 minute of each was recorded and somehow ended. I'll do that a week or so after episode 6. I summarized what it was about at the beginning and tbh it would make for an awfully boring review at this juncture because I want to see what I haven't seen of the series until I finish it before rewatching episodes I've already seen.

05:40 the big guy was David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films and was dubbed by James Earl Jones.
It’s a pity they didn’t keep Prowses voice. Darth Vader with a West Country accent would be cool

The whole of the BBC is incestuous. Sandra Dickinson and Peter Davisons daughter is married to David Tennant.
Wash your mouth out!
The books are brilliant. I used to read the books in bed and the whole bed was shaking with my laughter. Got a few elbows in the ribs
It’s the complete comment, “I’ll just go and shoot myself. Don’t worry sir, I’ll do it very humanely!”

Love this incarnation of Marvin . The BBC did their best to bring the radio story to tv . Douglas Adams had an amazing imagination .
The quote 'He's dead for a year for tax reasons.'....(wish I had that excuse)😏😼
As a boy of a certain age in the UK when this was first shown I really had the hots for Sandra Dickinson playing Trillian.😁
She does the worst attempt at an American accent I've ever heard. Quite pretty though.
@group-music Sounds a bit like Betty Boop😁

@busload_uk That makes her accent even more bizarre 😄.

Hotblack Desiato is actually the name of a realtor in Islington (Where Douglas Adams lived). I guess it's an 'in joke' for Londoners!
I saw those signs!! I was wondering about that
I am kind of jealous that you're seeing this for the first time - we need more of your laughter
