Great video, my 2000 Camry died on me while driving and is making the same exact sound. I’m no mechanic, but can fix small issues and do all maintenance. I always turn to UA-cam if I don’t know how to diagnose or fix something more serious and I love videos like this. Very helpful!!
Average mechanic near me.. "fixes timing belt, good as new" I love how your trying to dig deeper trying to find out what caused such mess. I appreciate people like you
Must be one of the best how to guides ive seen! Cheers boss your a legend
That's an unforgettable sound of no compression. Nice step by step, Will!
spelunkerd it's the first sound in the memory bank :) thank you for stopping by it's always great hearing from you. Thank you

Owned a 98 Camry had 260k + miles before I sold it. Love these engines
It's a Toyota and you're working on it...of COURSE it'll live to fight another day!
Chris Freemesser 👍😁😉thank you I appreciate that!
I need this man in my garage!
The minute you said shut off on the road while driving and little resistance when cranking I immediately called it a broken timing belt or warn teeth on the timing belt. Exact thing happened to me in my corolla. Fixed it myself with no problem.
as? what was the problem?
I just stopped on the road in the same situation
@@mgalsanov "I immediately called it a broken timing belt or warn teeth on the timing belt." I guess she is talking about the timing belt.
Thanks for taking us through the analysis.
Great video! My T belt failed due to not using a Toyota W. Pump or Aisan brand. Pump seized and T belt broke. I went in replaced all the components w/ Toyota or Aisan. Replaced the 2 Oil pump seals
along with a Cam shaft seal. Installed a new T Belt. Thanks for making this video!
I think you diagnosed the problem when you said the customer did not want to spend a lot of money on the car, well this is what happens if you skimp on maintenance
You are a great mechanic I like the way you work most old school and some new school just using common since.
you are a good brother
appreciate how you keep calm
and the lady is is right on time with you
you guys are blessed+
Best video on the failed timing belt. My wife just drove her Camry and it died just as it finished crossing a bridge. This helps in the repair.
Very distinctive sound of a broken timing belt vs a non broken high pitch whine. I dont think that small leak of the valve cover could cause a timing belt failure. good job on the cam seal diagnosis, alot of ppl would've just over looked that. That tool is AMAZING!
Seen that a time or two lol usually due to neglect of routine maintnance and glad to see you doing a complete job. Keep up the great work
Robinson's Auto Diagnostics I agree ☝️ in this case it was preventable
Wow..incredible. Can't wait for part 2!
JL Jenkins thank you ;) will get it up as soon as editing is completed ✅
Great video happened to me 98 Camry owner when my car was idling I drove my car to park it in another spot and it was idling and died when I came out my home
On a lot of cars you can open up the oil fill cap and find the camshaft not spinning. I diagnosed a broken timing belt on an 02 Focus for a buddy on a farm with no tools in 10 seconds, I just opened the oil cap and saw the harmonic balancer spinning, but the camshaft not spinning.
Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.
ManicMechanic007 thank you bud! Was great having you on live the other day! That was you right? Wishing I had more time. Would love to do it again with a little preparation lol thanks again
Yup, that was me - from Canada.
I just subscribed great camera work and great walk thru!
Really enjoy your detailed videos.
You have a calm disposition. (at least on camera) :)
Tammy does great video work.
Thanks for sharing
D K thank you 👍 I try my best, still have my moments like we all do I'm sure, some days worse than others lol all depends on my back to be honest, I know that sounds crazy however if I'm in pain my mood swings lol when I'm feeling good I'm good ;) I'm lucky to have someone that's understanding to say the least. Thanks for the kind feedback I will pass the thanks along. Hopefully she sees this as well
Sorry you have back issues.. They are NO fun for sure.
D K thank you I appreciate the kind words. I try my to do my best to help out.
Hey Will, Thanks for the great videos. My back has aggravated me for years until I learned how to do preventative maintenance for it. Lie on your back on the floor and have your wife raise one leg to make a 90° angle or more if you can take it. Your knee must be locked. Stretch for several minutes and alternate legs a few times. This stretches your hamstring. A tight hamstring pulls on your lower back causing debilitating pain if left untreated. I WISH I KNEW HOW EFFECTIVE THIS STRETCH WAS SOONER. PLEASE TRY IT. IT HAS DONE WONDERS FOR ME. Once pain is gone, do abdominal exercises. Strong abdominal muscles will help support weight of upper body causing less work for lower back muscles. I hope this helps you.
Joseph Alchalabi thank you that's great I'm glad you found a way to prevent the pain. I will give these stretches a shot, would do anything to go without pain and worries
I have been subbed for a long time and thought I had notifications on but didn't! I have many vids to catch up on. Thanks for the informative video.
The Disgruntled Mechanic thank you 👍 most of my sub base is from the time before the bell 🔔 unfortunately. Now that I'm back in it I'm struggling to real em back in lol but it's slowly picking back up thankfully. I'm glad you stopped by it's great hearing from you
My son has the exact same car. The oil pump gasket, which is an oring on this car, is notorious for leaking too. Easy to fix when doing this job. I've also done his valve seals which were hard as a rock causing the car to smoke something terrible on cold start. I understand this a common problem for this engine also. His car only has 110k on the odometer.
Jeff Leach yes I agree it's a good time to do it. Thanks for the feedback. Had your hands full on that one ☝️
Gotta love non-interference Toyota engines! Just run it till she quits, throw a new belt on, keep on trucking :)
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics so true :) few and far between these days, thanks for stopping by bud! Glad to see your travels went well
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics That was my first guess. The timing belt broke. The description in this video of what happened while driving , gave it away. I have a '95 Camry. No worries if my timing belt breaks either. The best car I ever owned.
So i have 01 camary and today i started the car put it in drive and car turned off.. it is making the exact same high pitch sound when you try and start. All i could do bec i was at work was pull the top 2 screws and i noticed when trying to start the timing belt is not moving. What i do not understand is the car has 217k the belt was replaced at 100k and then again at 200k now here i am at 217 with a belt not turning. I cant get it opened up until this weekend to see if it is broke or jumped.. can there be any other reason where the cams wont turn? All other belts are turning so the motor isn't siezed. So frustrated. What reason could a belt go bad wirh just 17k on it? Thanks for reading.
@@chadsmith1348 Crappy aftermarket parts? Failed tensioner? Should be obvious wnce you tear it apart :)
Oh yeah, I'd say your on the right track chasing a timing belt. Your camera woman did a good job keeping up with you.
wyattoneable thanks you, yeah she did pretty well lol
wyattoneable thank you I try sometimes it get hard 😉
Great video very luky having a cambelt snap and no damage i guess it was the oil what made the belt week over time looking forward to part 2
Paul Mayou very lucky indeed. I believe you have a good point ☝️😉👍
It's the last of Toyota's non interference engines the 5SFE!! Did hundreds of these when I worked in the Toyota dealership very easy timing belt job!!
Brilliant video,well done
Had a 2007 Camry and it didn't want to turn back on after driving it. It turned out it was a .35 cent rubber washer/gasket that was cracked in the gas pump. Had to take the back seat out and pull the gas pump. I did a pressure check before anything and it was at 27 then after replacing the rubber washer/gasket it shot up to 60. No problems since.
On these vehicles i check the grounds as well.
Great video Will loved it
Tim webb thank you 😊👍
Timeing belt and water pump were the weak leaks on the four cylinder camrys. They were expensive to fix but well worth fixing.
Had one a few years ago on a friends Hyundai. It was so weak it could be torn by hand. Dispite an invoice from the dealer stating a replacement had been fitted 3 years before at huge cost...
very good lesson one of best seen yet
Evening #2 of trying to watch this video... I keep getting interrupted! I got lucky guessing timing belt! I had a similar / sort of no-start yesterday on a TDI Jetta. Didn't record the whole thing... customer was lucky. I'll post it end of the month. Back to watching your video! =)
Awesome having you here, lol it was more than a lucky guess 😉When your good your good. Looking forward to seeing it. I got lucky with the 1.9 TDI once going back a few years, crank no start. Cam vs crank was just about perfect however the injector pump jumped! 😳was a luck day for everyone 🎉👍
Some guys don't realize how lucky... until you tell them what could have happened. =)
What could the problem be if gas is not getting to the pump?
Where can I get a drill like that! Didnt see any at local Harbor Fright or Lowes
I recently replaced a timing belt for a friend's Camry the timing marks are correct and I rotate the engine and they land in sync.. but the car won't fire.. is it possible for the cam to be 180 out? I did compression stroke tdc and then lined up cam but no dice on firing up
The engine looks similar to my 1989 Camry. Crank no start. I’ll try the compression test and go from there. Will the process be the same if the timing belt is the issue?
I just don’t know so please be kind 😄 thank you
ancially and generally in life here is a good one and am grateful.
Good video!
If you put starter fluid will it still start
great job thanks
I remember that sound when my timing belt popped on me at a red light, over a year ago. Still have the blue tag imprint from the guy who had to push my car with his truck, on the back of my bumper lol. Then the police pulled me over thinking I actually meant to run that red light. When my timing belt went bad, I was told that all the oil seals had to be repaired too. It was leaking oil into the area with the timing belt. The valve cover was leaking pretty bad from the back too because weak gasket.
Great job again, Will. Years ago i had a customer ask if i could repair his old belt with rubber glue. {:>)
wysetech2000 thank you 😊 lol that's priceless and I believe it 😂😳🙄🙈hahaha
I have 99 Camry AUTOMATIC 2.4. I hit a tree branch pretty hard. And it killed the car immediately. The fuel pump is working also if I spray starting fluid Into Intake it starts till it burns offs. Is there a emergency fuel shut off?
what kind of cordless is thay power ratchet
Prognosis is correct. Like Punxsutawney Phil is a prognosticator of the weather. A diagnosis requires testing.
👍😊☝️ ha Tammy I knew I was right lol 😂 thanks for the conformation! I knew she was way off but didn't have the heart to correct it on cam ☝️lol
Good work -- poor customer was probably charged for a timing belt that was never installed.
goodfellowsgarage thank you, that would be horrible However we may never know sadly
I got 99 camry with. No starting. It got compression spark and gas and still wont start any advice
What years does this apply to
Put s borescope in the plug holes to check the valves.
Also look out for the water pump see if it's not leaking because chances are coolant and is leaking and got the belt wet and that'll cause it to snap as well, Even though, you're right the timing belt was never replaced "routine Maintenance"...
Daniel C. Yes it's a good practice to replace the water pump while your there. I agree 😉 thanks for stopping by and leaving feedback! Great advice
Great video! I learned a lot. Thank you!
what is the name of the scanner you are using
I have this car with the 4c engine. I bought brand new gas because I knew I was going to have to let it set for a minute over the winter. Next fall come around and I pulled out the keys to get it started up, I can hear the pump engaging but it has the most electrical sounding crank that I've ever heard. There is absolutely no fuel getting to the engine for some reason but I can smell gas when cranking, like a old flooded carb (I'm aware this is not carb) I'm stumped. Filter? Something electrical? It bugs the crap out of me because I'd I could get it running that would really help my situation right now.
True thought unfortunately, mine always ends up with losses😭
How much did this whole thing cost the customer?
The oil pump gaskets are always broken/deteriorated on these. If u don't change the pump and gasket you will still have a leak there.
Got a 10/97 Toyota Camry. Looking for the crankshaft sensor
I have a 1999 Toyota Camry 3.0L and I’m having the same issue it won’t start
My car makes same sound but im stuck on what the actual problem is
2005 toyota camry xle crank no start sisters car I'm retired . Milage ? . I'll start with compressin check. Did a 1999 toyota rav same situation non i terference engine. Got gates kit from rockauto. All set. Did 2006 subie sti timing belt with gates kit all set. Working on 199t honda odyssey same situation with bent valves head still at machine shop. Hoping sisters car is non interference. Great video this will definitely will help me out
So my 2000 Toyota Camry died while at light started back up and turned off again thought it was my alternator but I changed it now all it does now us one click noise than battery dies and it doesn’t start any suggestions
Some nice camera work there
Desmond Blyan hey Tammy where are you lol I can't take the credit for this one 😊☝️ she did a great job thank you. Hope she gets on
Desmond Blyan thank you I appreciate it
The throttle should be held wide open to give it as much air as possible when testing for compression?
yes for a optimal test, the engine should also be warmed up prior, we should have seen near min 145psi under optimal test should be closer to 178psi is the spec on this vehicle
Yep Greg is right timing belt is where i would look first. Are Toyota motors interference motors?
some are some arent. this one most likely is a non interference. the newer VVTi engines are interference engines.
Power steering pump check for leaks
Funny you say this. We actually replaced the ps pump separately 👍 great eye
Access to good information is what we investors need to progress fin
Just had 2001 camry do the same thing. Seal at cover was shot. Had a real bugger getting the bolt off the harmonic balancer. Rounded it off trying to break the bolt loose. What's the best way to remove a rounded bolt? Other than that, this video was awesome.
It's a bit late but a chisel always works for the bolt and in the future bump the starter with a breaker bar on it. Works great.
I have 98 Camry. Replaced head gasket. Everything back together. Timing belt good and at top dead center. Cams good and aligned correctly. Compression is decent but not perfect. But the 500,000 mile motor still has life. It’s getting fuel and spark but it will not start. It cranks fine just won’t start. And I’m at a loss. No codes from OBD2
Oh
I believe the timing belt is one of the worst inventions!
After I heard he start it up it was the timing belt
That's interesting, any way to connect with him?I have to get started.
It's the Belt Patrick!
Thanks for the video. I have a question for my 2000 Camry. It died the other day while we were going down the highway. I thought the fuel pump went out and replaced it, still cranked but no start. Do you think it could be a broken timing belt as in this case? Back in last January, I brought it to a mechanic to change the whole water pump, valve cover gasket, and cam seal to fix this huge oil leak my Camry had. So is it possible that the mechanic didn’t put it back correctly last time, which resulted to it not starting today? Thank you so much.
Son Dao it's a possibility. Do you have fuel psi and spark? Many possibilities
robinsonsauto Thank you for your reply! I don’t have the fuel pressure gauge nor know where to stick the valve into and check the psi. I have not looked the sparks yet.
Just got back checking the white plug (underneath back seat) to the fuel pump in the fuel tank to see if it has any power. There was 5 different connectors on it, but only 1 had power. I don’t know if that’s the way it is or something is wrong there.
Also, I tried spraying some starter fluid to the air filter and gave it bit of gas to start it. Engine sounded like it want to start, but the moment I press the throttle, the whole front was shaking and seemed like the engine wanted to die. (Best way I can put this is as if you were releasing the clutch on a manual car and not giving it enough gas)
Has this narrowed down what might be the problem that you could think of? Again, thank you so much for your reply!
Son Dao so it starts some with starting fluid? Keep in mind if it's not getting fuel the only sorce is what you sprayed in. Starting fluid evaperates fast. As soon as it's disaped or burned off it's gone and the car will miss and shack from lack of fuel then die unless you keep it running by spraying more in. Is this what your experiencing?
robinsonsauto that could be the culprit since I only gave it three sprays each last 2 seconds or so, and then turned the key. I did not continue spraying while turning the key. I will try spraying while turning and see what happens. I will get back to you soon, thank you!
robinsonsauto Also, I forgot to mention that the OBD2 showed the code “crankshaft position sensor.” I don’t remember what exactly the code number was, and that was all it said on the screen, nothing else.
that idler pulley looks like it is at quite an angle. camera angle maybe
22video11 it dose appear that way However yes it's the angle sorry about that
My Toyota Camry 2007 LE having a headache problem : If I run a few hours , than I I stop to fill the gas tank . When I start the engine , nothing ! No crank , no sound ! But if I wait for the engine to cool down or use the jump cable with other car , the engine start fine ! I already change the battery ! Anyone have any idea ?
I was called to another garage to fix a 2005 300c chrysler. The problems they noticed with the car was Hard or no start, red lightning bolt flashing, no throttle response, headlight stays on, battery and ESP light remaining ON during, most times immediate stalling after starting however, if it doesn't stall there's a rough idle throughout idling as a result a old PCM was replaced with a new one however problem still persisted.
I scanned for DTC codes and saw a P0340, P2167, P2166, P2115, P2116, p0603 and more module codes like C2202, U0168, U1414, B1A25, etc.
Please, how can I fix these problems?
Can you also 🙏 provide me with the wiring diagram to CMP, CKP, APP factory values and how to test them? What should I be looking for in fixing the blinking red lightning bolt limp mode light, how can I reset the throttle without a scanner?
This is helpful, thanks .....gotta message him right away.
Will how many miles on the car?
Eric Corse around 170k I believe will need to review part 2 footage I can't recall, sorry for not mentioning I can check the work. Order I believe I do mention in later clips, I will be editing later
Hey I need a little help, I have a 96 camry and my timing belt snap, just put in a new one today but I did everything right and the car doesn't turn over when I start, I couldn't figure it out and I'm stressing bad about it. Please help
I have same problem did u fix
My guess for both of you guys. You must have moved the timing Mark's. Now your timing is wrong
So many of these videos of mechanics rambling on. Just get to showing all the possibilities that could be cause it
What brand battery wrench do you use? Do you recommend it?
tomhasno Harley ACDelco ARW1201 Li-ion 12V 3/8" Ratchet Wrench w 2 battery, 57 ft-lbs find it on amazing as a kit 2 battery's under 200
It's been good to me, little on the large size though. I would like to try out the Milwaukee before referring this one. However I can't complain. If it wasn't for the length it would get 5stars from me
Thanks for the reply. They all seem to be bulky, I'm sure like everything else they'll get smaller. I want to check out the Milwaukee as well. Thanks again!
is that a non interference?
yes non-interference luckily
I have the same car car shut off one day there are four things in the distributor coil camshaft sensors two of them I am two sensor you're better off buying a new distributor before that take distributor cap off turn engine over if the distributor inside is turning then your timing belt is fine if it is not turning then guess what timing belt is broke I did this in my yard took me 2 hours myself fired right up
Looking forward to part two
Desmond Blyan thank you. Will get it up soon as possible
My 2004 Camry quit on interstate after passing gear kicked in on cruise.
But overheated also.
Any ideas anyone
sorry for the late response, Any luck?
Make sure to replace the oil pump o ring and seal
turbobuick33 this repair was completed, part 2 will be edited shortly. Good recommendation though! Thanks for stopping by
Should have tried turning it over with the oil cap off to see if the shaft was turning then you know if it's the belt
Not if it just jumped time
My car sometimes I have hold the key for a long time to turn on or sometime pushing the gas it start can you help me
New Alternator was up on but still having the problem
Maria Cuadra could be so many things, are you in Pennsylvania
No I'm in California
Crank sensor!!
Take your distributor cap off to see if the thing is turning if it is not turning then your timing belt is broken replace it
Same sound came on my 2004 Camry, only it had a timing chain not belt. Mechanic replaced the whole engine. I asked about changing the sensors, he said that that sound never means there's sensor issues. Did I get duped?
I've been searching all day to find a video explaining my problem. I have a 2014 Camry. Won't turn over and just cranks. Cleaned the battery connections which only one needed any maintenance. Getting power from battery. Car just won't start. Frustrated... 😑
I'm headed to part 2.
Ozzstar 👍😆 thanks for watching hope you enjoy
👍👍
STEVE ROB thanks for stopping by bud
Age it's a factory belt They need to be done every 60k. Even I Know that and I am just a doctor general practitioner.
Change the distribtor
um this just happened on my car .. same car . 99 .. i was on the road near my home . i knew what problem was in 10 min .. took off the timing cover at top .. pulled it back a little bit .. could see the timing belt broke .. why didnt you just do that first? ez look see at top cover .. did the job myself .. not too bad
could also just pull #1 plug look at see the piston if its moving while cranking . thats easy too
Hi there, why don't you pull the Valve cover Off, make sure that the - CAM-SHAFT - didn't Break, or valves got Bent, just to Confirm...,
Good luck, hope that ENGINE can be Salvage, if not start looking for a new one or a used Engine...
Daniel C. Part 2 will be up shortly 👍 would hate to spill the beans 😊 this job was completed last week just getting around to the edit. Good advice though! Thank you
robinsonsauto, Hey, OH, I see, can't wait for part 2, BTW Thanks 👍 for the Reply, yeah, I hate when people say, but what maintenance, is running fine, & I don't have the Money, which I understand, but up to certain degree, oh well life goes on....
Daniel C. Your welcome 😉 I agree
And I was just looking for crankshaft sensor removal. Lol
