The white box where they must kill each other shows the inside of the airplane, his fear. To die in spleef, you have to fall, or crash land. And the obsidian platform where Rek got out is high in the air to represent his fear of heights. The birds are there because they live near the ocean and fly which goes to his fear of heights and flying.
