  • Here is a new and improved hog trap design made to catch more hogs consistently including whole sounders. Double guillotine door, large corral utility panel with interior feeder. It also has a new unique trip wire system that has worked great!

    Thanks for the feedback Allen. I appreciate your input and ideas! I do have and have used single door traps with various trip mechanisms over the past 30 years or so and they work just fine. This new trap is much bigger (128’ circumference) than my single door traps have been. My thinking on two doors not only has to do with the hogs feeling more comfortable by seeing an exit or escape route. It also about more access to the trap. Until I install a remote trip mechanism Id like as many hogs in the trap as possible when it gets sprung. My trip wire system is set up so I do not catch only little hogs like can happen with the tire system. That’s important to me because I sell the hogs I catch and the little ones aren’t worth anything right now. I have caught a few deer but they just jump right out of the trap and typically don’t ever come back in the trap again after that so deer haven’t n’t been a problem so far.

      WHATS wrong with ham and bacon? 17 bucks for 7 pigs, what?

    • @brushywillie6055
      @brushywillie6055  2 роки тому

      @@ronhanish I know right! There are so many restrictions on selling wild hogs and their meat the few processing companies with the license can pay whatever they want. All the meat gets shipped overseas or is used in pet food here. 100% organic pork not fit for the American public?

    Good effort.
    I don't see the advantage of having 2 gates, maybe if they were large ones where the hogs could easily see through the trap, but those are narrow. It just seems like one more failure point. I'd suggest going to a single gate and using your 2nd gate on a 2nd trap. Put your trigger on the far side of the trap to catch the most pigs.
    The wider the gate, the better. I use a swing gate that's about 6' wide.
    I get a lot of deer traffic in my traps. They'd trip the trigger you use. I've had the best luck using a tire trigger in my corral trap. See my videos for clarification.
    I also suggest putting a hog pipe in the trap. It gets them used to staying in the trap for long periods so they're comfortable.

    • @brushywillie6055
      @brushywillie6055  2 роки тому

      When I did this video I had the gates locked open by putting the pins in the door channels to hold them open. When the trap is set for trapping those pins are pulled and when the trip wire is hit it releases the door cables and the doors fall closed. As I said before in this video I had the doors held open with pins so they would not close. I hope that helps?

    Great setup BW, as you know the younger pigs will usually come in first, the older bigger ones are more cautious , being able to raise that trip wire a little higher allowing the smaller pigs to settle in, drawing the bigger ones in to eventually trip th wire, have you tried digging post holes as deep as you can near your trip wire fill with corn , especially soured corn, will cause them to congregate in the center, also if feeder fails the throw, still got corn to root out. Feed and Breed seems there M.O. RootRRiddR out.

    That was pretty decent. I don't know if you thought about it or even if it's legal, but maybe you could sell those small pigs and ship them on ice all across the country. Guys I know have pig roasts and if they could get them at a reasonable price, they might buy them. They used to do it, but I don't know if they still do, but there are probably many people that would buy them from you. Just a thought. You'd have to check into the legality of it. Also, you might be able to donate them to food banks.

      Thank you for the ideas. My understanding is that I can only sale these wild hogs to a state licensed buyer. It seems like such a waste to me for any to go to waste but the reality is there are so many and they are so prolific that a land owner just cant afford to catch them, haul them, process them in a way it would be economical even if it was legal. With fuel prices and corn prices at $10+ for 50 lb bag it’s difficult now to even trap. My traps have not been set since last winter. Its all about the bottom line, it just doesn’t pay to trap and sale them right now to a licensed buyers for pennies per pound. If it was legal and I could find folks willing to buy them skinned & quartered for a fair price (which would be far less than store bought pork) I think this resource could be utilized and enjoyed by far more folks. The government seems to be the issue and problem here as well as most other places. Thank you for your ideas and God Bless!

    • @brushywillie6055
      @brushywillie6055  2 роки тому

      Oh and also, I give skinned and quartered pigs and gave them away all the time just so they dont go to waste. I am unaware of any charity here in Texas that will take these wild hogs. They are afraid of liability if someone was to get sick from eating them. Donations to “Hunter’s For the Hungry” require the person who donates them to pay a portion of processing price.

These buyers sale the hogs they buy from trappers like me and then sale to the big commercial processing plants that ship the meat all over the world. My guess is any one of these folks can get you in touch with the big commercial processing plants. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can do anything else to help out!

      Thanks for asking Ty but right now Im good. Ive had guys from Virginia and Kansas down in the past. The hog numbers right now on my place are low and I haven’t even seen one in over a month. (Thats why I don’t have any new videos!) I caught a ton back in the fall but then me and my neighbors must have trapped them out or they just moved out. Im not complaining but it is very unusual. Im sure they will be back in force sooner or later but they have never disappeared like this since they first showed up in the early 1980s.
      If you like send me an email and I can ask around for you. I have several buddies with land that still have plenty but the biggest hurdle will be overcoming landowner fear of liability. Folks are worried someone will get hurt and then they will get a lawsuit filed against them.
      Most people here are very kind and generous folks and would love to share their land but the actions of a few have ruined it for everyone. Until the landowners know you and trust you most aren’t going to be willing to risk it over a few hogs.

    • @brushywillie6055

      Hey Robert, I built the doors myself and i think I spent about $100 on materials each. I have built 4 doors but I dont remember the dimensions if hand now. If you tell me what specks you like I could get them for you next trip out there.

    • @brushywillie6055
      @brushywillie6055  3 роки тому

      Oh and the $100 price tag includes the utility panel (4”x4” holes) I used on all 4 doors I built. They cost about $55 at Tractor Supply each and one sheet was plenty for all four doors with extra left over. Im sorry I don’t remember the dimensions off hand but they are about 3’ wide and 4’ tall (the door) the door frame is closer about 8’ tall.

    • @brushywillie6055
      @brushywillie6055  Рік тому

      Im sorry I don’t remember the exact specs. At the time it cost me around $100 to build. I understand costs for metal and everything else had skyrocketed. I used to trap hogs to make a little extra money but with fuel and corn so expensive I can not make any money so my trapping is on hold until something changes.
