I explain Kamado Joe's to my friends like i've owned them for years because of these videos. Great job!
Just picked up a KJC 1 this weekend for $450. Spatchcocked thanksgiving turkey was my first cook. Came out really good. Your videos definitely helped take away some of the learning curve.
Just wanted to point out that the classic 1 comes with the multi piece firebox now. No idea when they started shipping them like that.
thank-you, cheers.... they last longer / don't have the same cracking risk so its a good thing
I would be interested in seeing how you cook some of your favorite sides while using the two tier system.I know you have done a couple of those combination cooks in the past with Mac and cheese, etc but are there other sides you really like to cook on the KJ while cooking other types of meat.
Now that I have a big joe on the way, I need to justify the size(doubted myself even after pressing the order button)
@@kevinrutledge9602 you'll be surprised what this bad boy can do, I love mine!
As a kamado novice with a limited budget I bought a kamado joe junior. Your videos have been very useful & led to some great cooks. Keep the content coming James. Thanks.
Closing the vents to move them “off the island” was a nice touch! Haha. Very informative!
Here in Australia, I had my eyes set on the Joe Jr, but when I added the control tower and cart.. it was a matter of adding $200 and getting classic 2. In terms of the actual needs, Jr was going to be enough. But just went to classic to future proofing a little bit. Your videos have been extremely helpful in making a decision. Thanks matey!
Just got a KJ classic for 319 at lowes. 3 weeks ago it was 799. Holy hell the steal.....holy hell the mark-up
I have the Big Joe now for more than 4 years, and i made only one mistake in my life concerning the Kamado. I ordered this machine 20 years to late. It is a winner. Greatings from the Netherlands.
I LOVE my new Joe Jr- I’ve used it twice already in less than a week of getting it! I only have ever had a gas grill and wanted to try out charcoal with no regrets! So you ladies out there - it’s not just for men/dads! It was easier than I thought. Thanks for the videos James! Btw, I couldn’t find a link for the red thermometer you use.
I'm on the fence about which Kamado Joe to buy and was wondering which option you would prefer: having 2 Joe Jr.-s or one Classic II?
The thing is that I mostly cook for my family of 4, but in the summer we do regularly entertain guests and need something that can handle up to 8 people. As I see it, you can get up to 3 Jr-s for the price of one Classic II, hence my thinking 😊.
I have been finding your videos very informative and like you style. Keep it up, James!
Thanks in advance for you 2 cents, Ion
I recently purchased my first Kamado Joe... the Joe Jr thanks to your videos. I would love to see a video of using the soapstone in the Joe Jr for pizza. Keep the awesome content coming.
I have been debating the Weber Master Touch Premium with the swanky hinge and smoke ring/diffuser plate but the Kettle Joe really intrigues me. As a single fella who fell into grilling 7-8 months ago with a Weber Compact Kettle and wanting an upgrade, I get the feeling that a Kettle Joe would probably last me longer than a Weber Master Touch Premium.
Such indecision! The prices in the UK are crazy too, you say $499, I say £549 or $770 USD at time of my writing. (The aforementioned Weber is £400'ish)
have you looked at the SNS deluxe kettle? that’s a good option too. each has their own advantages and disadvantages
@@SmokingDadBBQ Unfortunately there is only one retailer in the UK for the SnS Kettle. It has been out of stock for a while and has no 'back in stock' date.
I also tossed a coin between that and the Weber, and the Weber won. It was that close I couldn't decide which way to go.
Purchased the Joe Jr with less than a month of using it loved it so much just went and got the classic 1 since it was on sale rite now for $449...Kamado cooking is definitely a whole different ball game if your picky with your bbq! And it's really not that hard to operate as some people think. This channel has me hooked. Ty!
Thank you for a great video and explaining each grill . I am leaning towards the Kamado Joe Jr since its only my wife and I. But I am bit nervous on this type of bbq since my only experience is a gas BBQ. You got my attention thou that this would give me a different BBQ experience. I am going to check out your other videos too .
Fantastic overview & review of all the models! The big joe for the wi! This is one I wish I had on my back porch!
The Joe Jr in my backyard mayyyy have been influenced by you 😉 Happy Canada Day, James 🇨🇦 ✌🏼
After I got the Big Joe 3, I got the Classic 1. I purchased the newer control kontrol top and the ash basket. Although the big boy has all the features, I’ve been using the smaller one because it takes so much less to grill. However, I love both, having been a Weber man for 3 decades. Watching your videos on temp control has really helped me tame these efficient Kamados!
My daughter is getting married in August. My wife & I gave them a Joe Jr. back in March….. since they can’t travel for the honeymoon they rented a little cabin by a nice lake & are bringing the Joe Jr with them 🔥. Man I laughed when they told me that 😂.
Got my first kamado last year, the Big Joe 3. Recently picked up the Jr.
It looks like my priorities are in line! I’d recommend either one to anyone, but if budget and space aren’t primary concerns, I’d recommend this exact combo for anyone who loves to cook.
The video we’ve all been waiting for. Amazing job! Have you done cooks in the rain? Can you do a video about your experience and provide any tips?
Thanks so much... actually I have done that recently, here you go - ua-cam.com/video/rEvNfCOeakA/v-deo.html
I have both the big Joe series 3 and the Joe Jr, and i agree with you 100%.
They both compliment each other perfectly, but if you can only afford to have 1 - go the Big Joe. Go big or go home ;)
I bought a Joe Jr because of your videos and information, thank you!
Doe you still feel the same about your choice?
Tons of great info here! I'm gonna ride with my 22" Pit Boss for a while yet, but when I'm ready to upgrade I'll definitely be checking out this video again.
Great video, James! You answered this for me a few weeks ago on IG. After a few weeks of waiting for one to come in, I’m finally picking up my big joe 3 today!🤙
Excellent! I started my kamado lifestyle with a Joe Jr and have been wanting to grow my arsenal with a BJ III. This video reaffirmed what I thought. Thanks!
Love the Jr. I did a Try-tip brisket like you did recently and it holds temp so so well. I love this thing. It's pretty heavy though and I don't have an SUV to transport it to the beach. I thought you would choose the Big Joe. I would pick that if money wasn't an object. Keep up the awesome videos.
Another great video sir the KJ brand is certainly synonymous with quality and you did another great job walking through all your kids to your favorite!
Another great review! Was a little shocked that the Pellet Joe wasn't #5. I have the Classic (original) and the Jr (recently purchased). Still getting used to the Jr...but I like it. Keep up the great work!
I debated this. the food is much better on the kettle and would be my choice but the quality of the kettle is not the same as the pellet or any other Kamado. the pellet feels well made and the kettle does not share the same sturdy cart, shelves or pull out ash drawer (mine is bending in the kettle vs indestructible on the classic and big Joe)
@@SmokingDadBBQ Yes...figured the flavor profile would rank the kettle a little higher. I think the kettle has some potential. Hopefully, the company is listening to your recommendations. It will never beat the ceramic grills but the price point is a lot better for some folks.
Good video and good information. I was looking for a small portable grill and had no idea kamado Joe made one that small. Going to have to add it to my outdoor cooking collection.
Hi James
Thanks for your video. It’s helped me choose. The Big Joe it is.
I’ve also watched many others. Like your easy presenting style. Keep the videos coming.
Ian from London.
I bought the classic 1 a year ago from lowes for around $700. It comes with the air hinge, the ceramic fire box and the shelves on the side. It lacks that new vent on the top though. I love this grill because during the winter and it's 20 degrees outside I'm still grilling with ease. Now that I know big joe has those accessories like the rotisserie and dojoe I'll pick on of those next. I want a bigger cooking area
I own the top 3 grills mentioned in the video and I called the same order just from looking at the title :) I TOTALLY agree.
aww man .. was debating hard between jo jr and classic 2 .. purchased the latter .. expecting it next week ..
might spring for a junior next year once i get more comfortable with kamados
I was able to get the Classic 1 from a recent sale for $399. Just as an update to this, it actually DOES come with the multi-piece firebox, and the metal side shelves. The rest of the things you mentioned were correct (daisy wheel top, felt ring seal, no latch lock, no air hinge, and no sloroller)
yes depending on the manufacture date the classic 1 can come with the new fire box, a neighbour got the same thing recently as well so i assume they no longer make the old one
Totally agree with everything on your video. Really informative and helpful especially for those in the market for one!
I have ceramic Kamado and Weber Summit Kamado. They are both excellent but the Weber I love the most (cooks just the same as a Ceramic, better air flow, lighter, won’t crack, half the price of a big Joe, you can get the temp down quicker if it overshoots, it burns for up to 50 hrs at 225 and you can easily quickly go 800f plus- it’s brilliant). I’ve even got a Big Joe half moon grate option in that Summit and a Classic Joe cast iron grate which gives a very large divide and conquer set up, plus you have the GBS system.
Out of all of the Joe range it would have to be Big Joe for me as I need that space, you quickly get used to it. Joes are very nice kit.
I never find the summit smokes as clean. maybe will try a side by side on a brisket. it’s a good unit for sure
@@SmokingDadBBQ Do you have one? I haven’t found any issues in that regard (seems to have better airflow). I know you are a Big KJ man but that would be a great video.
I am loving my Big Joe 3, but one slight con for me is "wheelability" due to the weight. Not an issue if you park it in a corner of the deck or patio, but I keep mine in the garage and wheel it out when I want to cook. Fairly smooth surface but there are a couple of bumps along the way and one of the caster kingpins has already bent. Great warranty behind the products, and Kamado Joe are sending out a replacement.
We love our Big Joe 3 that we bought 3 months ago. So soooo easy to control temps.(thought it would be more difficult)
Great review. Need some help deciding. I currently have the Joe Je. Looking to add another. But can’t decide between the Classic II vs the original Big Joe. We entertain at most 6-8 people a few times a year.
I have a soft spot for the big Joe as it makes full meal cooking a breeze and unless you dip into series 3 the big is better at low and slow than the classic 2
The Joe jr here in Australia is $699. The series 3 is $2,899. We get shafted on prices
I’m looking at upgrading from my 20 year old Webber Kettle to a Kamodo Joe Classic II. My space is limited. I’m wondering how close I can put this grill next to the house while in use?
Thanks
James thank you for this comparison! I think the torch to start the fire is a pro if you ask me. Further more, because of this video I know the next one, possibly two, I really want to get!
Good line up and great video once again.
Love the big joe i just need to practice getting clean smoke and spend some time with it. Would you say it cooks better with the sloroller or using the deflector plates instead or does it all depend on the meat your cooking? Thanks.
Well after watching this video, in the early hours of this morning here in South Australia, I went out and purchased the floor stock at the local dealership. Pick it up next Friday!!
Thanks for the advice.
@@SmokingDadBBQ cheers, there are heaps on back order at the moment, extremely popular bit of equipment!
I have the Classic 3 and Jr. I'll tell the wife you said the Big Joe was better. It's on you James lol. How's the Keto going?
haha I can take responsibility for that. I am looking to transition diets for something that has some multigrain
James, for us here from the start it is 100% clear the Big Joe is the winner. Straight away I knew the winner and the new editions will be at the end. Everything you said here was told in previous vids. It didn't come as big surprise Jr got the 2nd place, but it was a small one. I knew you love it, but thought you will pick the classic as #2 just because it has all the new perks that makes it a better, do it all cooker. Jr. is do it all you are able to fit cooker. As a brand new Jr. owner I am excited to check these limitation by myself.
Thank you for all of your videos. I just ordered my first Kamado Joe, and went with the Junior. What would you recommend as my first cook?
I was surprised to see the Jr. take the #2 spot over the classic 3. If it were me and I was going to get one of those two the classic would be my preference for sure. The Jr. is the great value, but the classic is just more grill in every way.
I knew that the Big Joe was going to be #1. I also expected you to choose the Kettle Joe over the Pellet Joe, but you made a good case for your choices.
the kettle makes better food than the pellet so I was on the fence... but the quality or lack thereof stands out vs. the other real KJ's so I kept it in last even though i personally would cook on it ahead of the pellet if i only had those two
I just found the classic 3 in the box for 650 I was like a kid on Christmas morning it was at a discount store I’m mind blown with the price I got it at
Have you taken the Joe Jr. out camping? Did you do anything special when packing it up? "Joe on the Go" would be a great video.
good idea. I love taking it places. need to secure it in the car and cool it before going back in the vehicle
@@SmokingDadBBQ Do you ever worry about the ceramic firebox cracking from getting bounced around in the car? I was thinking of removing it or putting a towel under it to act as a cushion.
@@CW4PWR back of a truck or moving van maybe. Most vehicles aren’t that bouncy so I don’t bother
I bought a Joe Jr. as a sidekick to my big smoker, thinking I would use one for “hot and fast” and the other for “low and slow”. Two months later, the smoker has been unused and I’m now a Kamado Joe convert. My Big Joe III is on the way…. So soon I’ll have your #1 and #2 choice on my deck. I’m thinking that I’ll use one for quick weekday cooks and the other for longer, more complicated cooks. I’ll have the answer in 2-4 months, but I’m curious if you think I’ll wind up using the Big Joe all the time. FWIW, it’s only my wife and me at home with occasional dinner guests.
you will love this combo, the jr for just you two quick mid week cooks and the big joe when you are wanting to do full meals and or larger cooks for guests
I already have the joe JR but this video convinced me to save my pennies and spring for the classic 3. I know you said the big Joe would be your top pick, even a series 2, but I just don't think I have the space. So I think I'll spring for the classic 3 and enjoy all the extra features
it’s an amazing grill. this is just my personal preference. I had a classic and jr size combo for the last 5 years or so and loved it
@@SmokingDadBBQ I mean ideally I'd have a pro joe built into my patio but I don't see that happening any time soon 😅
Does the big Joe not use a lot more charcoal?
Sorry, I've been watching your channel for a couple of weeks now, and have decided to get a kamado Joe, I'd decided on the classic knowing the limited space, but cheaper costs. Literally for the price of a big Joe three I can get a classic three with rotisserie ikomand and accessories so it makes more sense, but now I can't decide again. 🤣
that’s a great bundle of kit. it’s only my personal preference. I had the classic size for over a decade before getting the larger size and there was nothing I couldn’t do well on it
The average price for a classic three over here in the UK is £1900. And I've found a deal for £2010 (at birstal Garden & leisure, for anyone UK looking to buy) that comes with a joetisserie as well, so, as our family loves camping we've decided to add a Joe jr which will be around the same as a big Joe all together, which as you e said will give us the extra fire for bigger parties and also the Joe experience when we're away. Thanks for the videos they've really helped in making our decision, and I'll be using your first five cooks video to start when it arrives. Cheers James, and keep making the videos, they're much appreciated. 👍
Hi nice vídeo in your opinion which one es better to smoke classic lll or big joe?
they both do equally well, i can't taste a difference. so its more space that sets them apart, especially when you start going half grids where the classic gets small
Great video. My wife and I just bought our house in fall of '19 and I have a tiny Kingsford mini portable charcoal. Slowly talking her into the vicinity of the Joe line in price, but I also kinda get one shot. We have quite a few house projects that need doing. It's only us two, no kids, and I didn't host lots of people with frequency (in "the before times"). My experience is with a classic weber bucket 22". I've tasted a friend's BGE cooking and I'm enthralled with kamado capabilities.
I'm just not sure anymore if I should go for the classic 1 (on a hell of a sale at lowes right now) or a Jr and hope she let's me upgrade later 😅 or wait, budget for a classic 2 or something else. This is all very new to me. I would welcome your input.
for just one grill I would get the classic 1 on sale and try to add the charcoal basket, JoeTisserie and soapstone over time
Hi James,
I am thinking about buying a Joe Junior next to my Big Joe 3. Any word on an update on the Joe Junior side? In that case I will wait a little bit longer :)
i haven't heard any inside scoop but it got the soapstone and sear plate just came out along with a charcoal basket it feels like the form factor is here to stay
I have the Kamado Big Joe and during a typical BBQ my InkBird probe on the grate usually runs 25 degrees hotter than the temperature gauge on my Big Joe - which temperature should I go by ? Love your u tubes
thanks so much, thats normal. the grids conduct more heat with the fire directly under them than the dome probe farther away with hot convection air passing by ... much more than that is a signal to re-calibrate your dome as it might be off
Well, I got the Classic II and space indeed can be an issue if you had side dishes to make as well while using half of the grill indirect. Yet there's still the possibility to cook on two levels simultaneously. I admit, not the most comfortable way, but what would live be w/o challenges.
The Big Joe is just a bit too expensive, but who knows, maybe I find an unbeatable deal one day, like I did with the Classic II.
Still looking for a great deal on the Junior as well.
Thank you for doing these very helpful! I wish I had found them earlier. Did I hear you say the the Classic II does not have room to use the slow roller? I got the II because I wanted a stand alone. Big Joe seemed too big for just my wife and I. I ordered because they are somewhat hard to get and the place we bought from really did not have any available to see and compare. It is not unboxed yet as outdoor kitchen is still being built.Should I consider changing to a classic III to get the slow roller? Can that be freestanding or does it only come on a cart? I wanted this for slow cooking and smoking. Will have wood fired oven and grill in kitchen as well.
Again thank you for doing these videos they are really helpful!
the SloRoller can be added to all previous classic models but they are 4” shorter so you lose some grid space snd headroom
Thanks so much James! Do you have any thoughts on the new Masterbuilt Gravity Series?
Hi James, gday from Australia.
Love your videos mate, the best. I am so keen to get a Big Joe, you have convinced me it is the way to go over the Classic but I really can only afford the series 2. My only question is does the series 2 come with the x ring accessory and does the two tier divide and conquer system allow me set the deflector plates on the lower setting of the divide and conquer system like you have recommended in your previous videos rather than on top of the fire box?
Love your work and look forward to your next video.
Btw, as a sheep farmer would love to see you do a few more lamb cooks 😃👍🐑
Cheers
Andrew
100% love more lamb cooks. The 1 and 2 both have a 2 level D&C cooking rack
@@SmokingDadBBQ wether it’s low and slow whole shoulder with salt pepper rosemary and garlic in winter, mid week grilled loin chops or summer time hard and fast boned and butterflied leg , you just can’t beat lamb on the bbq. 🐑
@@SmokingDadBBQ we are lucky here on the farm that we get to grow and eat our own lamb, nothing better
We have the Kamado Joe Original Red in Australia, do you have any thoughts on this as an entry point?
its very similar to the large big green egg i had before going to the series 3. its a very capable grill and it would take a very very very discerning pallet to taste the difference if maybe not possible to food off the series 1 to the series 3
I totally didn't expect to see the big joe and junior to be fighting for spot number one. I like that you made this video all about YOUR preference. Different perspectives is always very interesting.
for convenient weeknight warrior, is the jr as fast and convenient as a gas BBQ?
Nothing is as fast and convenient as gas, IMO. I love my Jr, but it does take me ~20-30 minutes to set the whole thing up from cold to cooking temperature. It's also pretty small, so you can't do any two zone cooking (say, doing meat and veggies at the same time).
I'll turn to my Jr. if I've got a couple hours to set up and cook my food and I'm aiming for smoky flavor. However, if I've got 30 minutes to turn around dinner, the gas grill wins hands down, so long as I remembered to fill up the tank :)
Thank you very much! with the torch i am cooking on it in less than than my old propane grill
@@SmokingDadBBQ That's good to know! I should clarify that I'm using starter cubes for my Jr right now, so those are going to take some time to light it all up
@@mbojanczyk I take egg cartons or cardboard cup trays, soak aome veg oil, and you have the cheapest and most effective starter
I just picked up an 18" KJC2 $550 USD. I hope I don't regret not having the smaller space.
Fantastic review of your Kamados. My question is--can you use less smoking chunks if they are wrapped in foil with a few holes poked in?
Even though I don't have any Kamado grill, I love your videos. But one thing which is kind of sad is that all Kamado Joe grills are way more expensive in Europe than they are in the USA. The Kamado Joe Classic 3 for example is about 2000€ (2.448,28$) :(
yikes. they are more in Canada where I am from as well (2300 for the classic)
I'm in the market for a Big Joe. Which one would you get between a 2/3? What are the accessories for each of them? Thanks
they share accessories so I would get the soapstone and JoeTisserie as my two favourite accessories.
I’d like to purchase my first Komodo but I’m in the 1K price range. I can get a classic 1 Big Joe or the standard classic 2 within that price range. I primarily like Brisket and Pork shoulder. Do you think it’s worth it to go with the classic 1 Big Joe for the larger size?
i just bought a big joe 1 to compare the series... the big joe is my favourite size
Currently have a classic 1 and absolutely love cooking with it, only draw back is size. And for me not having the latest and greatest. My friend says I should just get a 2nd classic size, 3rd version so accessories aren't wasted. Would 2 classics be good? Classic and big? I do have a 4 burner Napoleon prestige grill as well.
it is really nice having two of the same for sharing the accessories vs. starting all over again. i had two classics at one point and there was nothing we couldnt tackle
Go big or go home! It's not cheap, but they last forever and are well worth the investment. Good video.
I thought i was in the market for a classic 3..... This video made me buy a big joe 3.... It will be arriving soon :)
I took your advice and bought the big joe, man what a quality of machine 👏👌🙌👍😍💪.
I would love to hear your thoughts. I currently am between purchasing a used Kamado Joe classic 2 for $700 vs a Joe Jr. New for $400. This is just mostly to cook for myself and my wife with the occasional guests. However, I like cooking ahead of the week. This will be my first Kamado. What are your thoughts?
the Jr is a very capable grill and will have warranty whereas the used grill won't (only new owner). Thats a tough call but if its just you and your wife most often i think the jr is plenty
@@SmokingDadBBQ thank you! What do you recommend i get along with it to get started? I'm thinking charcoal basket, starter torch, cover, charcoal, drip pan (10 inch), and a soap stone. Anything else?
Hi James, great videos! Can I ask how accurate the temperature gauge is on the Classic 3? Thanks!
its very accurate .... for where it is. every 6 months i suggest calibrating it as heat cycles and weather can work it out of accuracy, boiling water and a screwdriver will fix that quick.
The dome gives you a good general temp of the cook chamber, dropping your grids to the firebox its not going to give you an accurate idea of the temp as your food is sitting directly above the live fire so you need to incorporate some common sense along with the information its giving you
@@SmokingDadBBQ Fantastic, thanks for the information. Really appreciate you making your videos, your passion and diligence really comes through. You have inspired me to make the leap into the KJ world. Cheers James!
I really appreciate your calm and focused enthusiasm. I guess it's time to invest in a Kamado Joe now.
Reading this I wonder if it sounds like an low key insult, but I don't mean it that way. I'm not enjoying the ferret on speed bbq channels on youtube. Thank you :-D
One more question! You've said that the taller 3 series breathes better and the slow roller makes a big difference. I was sold on an 18" Joe 3 because those things sound pretty important! But you've also said you would take a Big Joe 2 over a classic Joe 3 because the space is important. This seems to suggest the upgrades from the 3 really aren't game changers. Any chance you can expand on this? If I don't plan on cooking large things I guess the 18' 3 is the way to go?
if you do party cooks like i do i would personally go big joe and add a sloroller over time...... if you plan to do 1-2 briskets a year like most normal people, the series 3 classic is hard to beat as one grill to do it all
@@SmokingDadBBQ thanks! For what it's worth, this weekend I found a smoking deal on a used Big Joe 2 and it's on my deck right now. :) it's huge... but great.
The price of the Big Joe 3 is insane. Would make me start thinking about a dedicated offset to go with weber kettle. Still debating on it.
it is not cheap… but when I look at it as being able to do things well that an offset would do, a pizza oven would do snd everything in between I feel better about it lol
I'm pulling for the Big Joe. I'm averaging 2-4 cooks a week. Question for you, how often are you outside grilling?
would you still recommend the Kamado Big Joe I against the Kamado Joe II?
for me and my personal preference and style I would but thats only because do lots of volume of cooking for friends and family
It’s not hard to do an overnight brisket on a kettle. I do them all the time with no issues. Kamado snobbery. Yes it uses more fuel. I just use my oven after I wrap. At that point, btu is btu.
i've done overnight briskets in my kettle joe, it in the same weather goes about 30% longer on a load of coal than performer does which in summer months doesnt really show up. in the cold climate where i am its the difference of sleeping through the night vs. adding a little more fuel prior to dawn
last summer I ordered a custom built offset smoker with a long waiting list a couple weeks later Amazon had a sale on the big joe one 750 bucks now I regret ordering the custom smoker it just sets
At 12:30 you say that the slowroller made you switch from BGE to Kamado Joe, is it really that good? Some people aren’t really enthusiastic about it. Interesting to see your ranking of the different models.
yes and no. the grill can make great smoke rings without the SloRoller so it’s I believe the 4” taller shape, more volume means a cleaner hotter fire is needed to hit the same temps and more distance from the fire that is what I am noticing even though there are small subtle differences with the SloRoller that makes it my go to for brisket or ribs etc
@@SmokingDadBBQ Thanks, that makes a lot of sense to me. Cleaner combustion might be the main effect.
Just got a Big Joe 2, but after seeing the price of the add-ons, I probably shoulda got the 3. Question - are you sponsored by KJ? No prob if so, just looking for that disclosure if so. Apologies if I missed it.
congrats, its mixed on grills i have purchased to grills i've been sent to try. i've mentioned this in the unboxing video of those videos but i am not obligated to use it, say anything about it etc. nor do i earn a commission tied to the sale of any kj.
Can you share what brand/style of gloves you are using in these videos that protect your hands from burning while handling grills and ceramic halves etc?
sure thing, link is in the description for the high heat gloves. I believe JHS safety makes them - amzn.to/33Ijdhk
I have one and it's outstanding don't regret the price
I tried your set up with a brisket steel had some burning on the bottom but on a hole came out good steel miss my stick burner
Question what would you choose: only a Big Joe or the classic III and a Joe Jr together?
the jr makes for a very exciting companion to either. I might do the classic and jr so long as I didn’t need the bigger space
For my little family of 3, my Classic 3 is good enough. Sure, a big Joe would give me more space, but I'm just cooking for 2 adults and a 7 y/o. I'll never be able to eat a huge brisket with my family.
I will get a Junior as well, since my 7y/o always wants to help with cooking.
I understand the fact that the Classic I is an older model from a design perspective and doesn't have a number of newer features that the Classic III has. Specifically, though I'm curious as to what accessories can be put into the Classic I. I'd certainly love to get a Classic III for all its standard features and accessories. However, I have a credit card that has a points award system and I'm able to get a Classic I that's usually listing for $799, and I can use my award points and get it for free! So I'm wondering what if any accessories I would need to add to the Classic I to get it tricked out to come closer to the Classic III? Any input would be helpful, I might try to get it this weekend if it works out to be a good option. Thanks for all your help and your videos, they're very informative and well done.
that’s a great deal. I would get the JoeTisserie and soapstone and charcoal basket.
@@SmokingDadBBQ I've gotten on their website and they have the soapstone for 20 % off ($99 reg price), and today only they have 25% off ($230 reg price) for the JoeTisserie. I went ahead before your reply and ordered the Classic I at Cabela's with my points (!!!), and down at one of the local retailers I ordered a SloRoller and a Pizza Stone and also picked up their Sear Plate for KJ Jr. (goes in the lower area of a Classic). Thanks to your video and reply here I think I'll take the Sear Plate back and get a Soapstone (just one or would you recommend two???) for searing. Also since they've got that 25% off the JoeTisserie, I'll probably order that as well. It starts adding up in cost, but hey I got the grill for free with Cabela's points so I'm certainly not complaining! I should have everything in hand the next week or so, looking forward to using your videos to help set it up, get that first burn in complete and then the first cook. Thanks for all your help
Is it worth spending double on a series 3 over a classic divide and conquer? I’m very keen on getting one but don’t want to regret my decision getting the cheaper one.
the truth is they will all cook very good food and the subtle differences in many cases can be hard to detect if even possible. I had a large egg for 10 years before switching which is a similar size / performance to the classic 1. the series 3 is 4" taller, has the sloroller, gasket, metal side shelves, the control tower top etc. so the level of new stuff that all adds some incremental benefit was too compelling to ignore. these things have a lifetime warranty so i tend to try and justify the investment over many years vs. getting scared of the sticker upfront as doing what i did and buying one model only to switch down the road when i want those upgrades costs more than just getting the one i wanted right away
@@SmokingDadBBQ thank you for the reply appreciate it. Now to convince the wife to get this over a brick pizza oven
@@SmokingDadBBQ I gone and done it and bought a series 3. Do you have any recommendations for an easy cook to get started?
@@Firstname03825 congrats. Check this out, the order helps ua-cam.com/video/JA84ZvYL47Y/v-deo.html
i have a question about smoking wood, you put the wood chunks under the charcoal. But when i tried this it feels like all smokingwood i gone already before my big joe 3 is up in temperature and stable and a can put on my food?
it won’t be. iced checked and the chunks are burning for a few hours if you’ve got them buried
So if you are cooking meat for 2 people, would you actually prefer the Jr because it heats up faster?
yes i often overlook it as i have the others but its fantastic for 3-4 chicken breasts or 2 steaks etc
Got my KJ Classic I, New in box, today. Let me tell you why I got the I series. First, I am on Maui, there is only one dealer and that is Lowe’s. No one else will ship the KJs here. Lowe’s only has 1 series of the Joe. I decided this was fine, due to price and my intended use. We don’t need the rain cap, because it will be under a roof. We don’t need the air hinge because lifting the lid is good exercise and the hinge requires more difficult adjustments. We don’t need the latch because we don’t have the air hinge, so one less thing to fiddle with. We don’t need the better gasket because the difference is arguably negligible and the replacement cost is less. We don’t need the beefier stand because the wires one is cute and it works. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
