The best tutorial on this topic within YT. My only issue is that I didn't want to desolder the copper wires from the base. The hole for the Battery lead to go through between the pcb board and the black copper wire casing was ridiculously tiny...which is why it's probably better to desolder the copper wires and remove that portion completely. I instead opted to use the soldering Iron with a fine tip and melt and burn a bigger hole for the lead to go through. The Black piece serves no purpose other than holding the copper portion as well as connecting to the base to charge the unit. The hole I made was much larger and easier to get the lead through.
I think the biggest issues are removing the leads of the motor and battery from the board...what a pain in the A$$! Another issue I had is when I went to resolder the motor leads....they somehow got shorter after I desoldered them....don't ask how because I have no clue. I ended up just soldering the very tips of the motor leads to the pads...that worked. My Oral B Toothbrush works like new now! Thanks for this tutorial dude!
As many others have already mentioned, your video is the most complete and explanatory on the topic. The fact that this was my first soldering project ever (and ended successfully) proves its quality. That being said, thanks to your instructions my 4-year old toothbrush is now charging with a spare Eneloop I had.
If it could be of any help for others with zero soldering experience (like myself) these are the points that needed a lot of attention:
- The tiny copper coil wires were the most tricky part for me because of their size. One should watch very carefully the video and understand how they are attached to the plastic and soldered to the board before working on them.
- Shaping correctly the white plastic frame in order to create space for the Eneloop is of utmost importance. If the copper coil unit does not snap perfectly in its positions, more trimming of the plastic is necessary. Did mine in many steps with a mid-size sliding utility knife and fine-tuned it with an X-acto.
-Using wick made the desoldering part much easier than using the desoldering pump.
Again, MANY THANKS and KUDOS for your excellent tutorial!
@@LEARNINGCHORDS Thanks for your reply, much appreciated! I just modified my comment about the wire to avoid causing problems to other ignorant people like myself :)
I’ve performed this “operation” twice on two different toothbrushes, using your video as guidance. Thanks! Both toothbrushes are about 5 years old, used daily, and are working like new. As a note, there’s no need to unsolder the coil wires from their soldering pads if you’re cautious in removing the circuit board / coil assembly from the plastic housing.
Yeah, that worked for me too. I constantly look for shortcuts, and like you said, as long as you're careful, you'll be ok.
Did this today using a Panasonic Eneloop Pro 2500 mAh battery. Was a little fiddly but not too difficult even for someone like me with novice soldering skills. I did break one of the really thin wires for my pressure monitor but it's a pointless feature so I just left it. Really pleased with the result. Thanks for the video, helped me immensely.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I’ve used this tutorial to replace my battery and it worked!!! It should become much easier to replace the batteries to provide environmental waste of resources. We owe that to our future generations.
Long video and I know why:very detailed, step-by-step to make a good repair. The high resolution of camera is important too. Toothbrush repaired.
Thank you. 👍
Glad it helped
I had ordered a new Oral-B for pickup at my local box store because mine had started running down quickly, but it really irked me that I had to replace it just because the battery was dying (It's only $42.50 to replace, so it wasn't the money but the principle of the thing) . I searched UA-cam and found your video and watched it last night. I decided I'd give it a shot before going and picking up the new one and it only took me about 30 to 40 minutes. I used a Energizer AA rechargeable 2300 mAh instead of the Eneloop and it now works like a charm (And probably will for another 5 years) . I just cancelled my order for the new Oral-B....Thanks so much for your video!
@Comprehensive Audio
I used the same Energizer battery. My toothbrush works now but when I turn it off, the lowest light (shaped like a plug) flashes red for a bit. If I put it on the charger, nothing happens. What do you think is wrong?
Excellent video. Worked perfectly for me, thank you. Maybe one day Braun will think of our planet and start making brushes with user replaceable batteries.
never== this is how they make money
‘Tis is why I have an old Oral B that uses 2 AA batteries and use rechargeable batteries
I might drop buying Braun altogether before that. When I think the manual doesn’t even provide the battery type info, nuts!!
Replacing battery should be easy and straight forward. Braun is almost on my black list by doing stupid yet tricky thing like that.
My girlfriend complained about her toothbrush, so I said the battery might be replaced. I watched the whole video and I was looking forward to change the battery, and then I cleaned the toothbrush, and now its charging. But now I know how to, thank you for sharing! For every video about fixing things that is created, that saves our planed a littlebit, and a lot of items. Its so many of us that knows how to fix things, Its just so many different things we buy, and so different things to fix. Now Im going out to fix the tracktor. Two different worlds haha
A.m.a.z.i.n.g
I'm a newbie in the world of soldering and I was able to do all the process, and voilà, it worked like a charm!
Your instructions were perfect. Thank you!!
Thanks for the excellent instructions, I've just repaired my toothbrush!!!!
To start the charge/recharge controller even on a fully charged battery after battery replacement or dosconnection you need to put the device on the charger. It's how battery charging controllers work when they lost battery voltage. Until they don't get voltage on the charge input you will not get output voltage from the battery. I am even simply short cat battery to charging input to start 18650 2 battery controller, so you even can use battery itself to start charge/recharge controller
Agree with others. Best video on this subject by far!! Following your detailed instructions, it took 30 minutes to take it apart and less than 10 to put it back together (and I have the 3756 w/pressure switch). Only 2 things I did different 1) Levered the bottom cover off by inserting a bladed screwdriver in the charging port and 2) For battery leads, I used bare 24 gauge Cu wire. Thanks again!
You can buy spludgers online for prying things open and they do less damage than a screwdriver - they are very cheap.
thank you for your effort in making the video. I will be changing the daughters battery this weekend. this is exactly what I needed. thumbs up to you
Good video. Everybody with a AA battery and a soldering iron is able to perform this repair. Don’t throw away your good old toothbrush👍👍
Your detailed video was a big help. Replacement worked just fine. Thanks
Lots of good detail, thanks. Only thing that drove me nuts was calling them Ni-Cad, which they are not. They are nickel-metal hydride or Ni-MH. Totally different chemistry.
Great video. Getting the solder off the contacts is the hardest part. It may be worth investing in some copper solder wick to suck off the solder.
I came here from another battery replacement instruction video hoping to see the de-soldering and re-soldering in action. None of that was shown sadly but everything else was so well explained I watched it all through anyway!
it is really hard to make these videos.. i had no way to get the camera to see what I was doing and hold the soldering iron and solder and toothbrush..
@@LEARNINGCHORDS hi!
Can I use also the normal recharable Battery AA r6? Will be also charging by wire?
the motor head can be completely detached unsoldering two contacts holding it to the board.
then the battery with the board will slide out in the direction of coil from the plastic bracket by unclipping black coil holder form the white plastic bracket then carefully prying out the board from two holding clips close to the coil, then pry a little two holders on the motor side of the board - the whole board with battery will slide out. So no need to unsolder coil at all.
First of all it's worth it environmentally wise. Good motor, good case and bad battery is not the reason to throw thing away. Thanks for the vid. The one thing I'd recommend for anyone eager to repeat this upgrade/fix is to test and the battery before soldering it to the board. Trying same fix with IKEA LADDA 2450
Thx for the video! Replaced stock battery with a full 2A size NiMH battery from a 6-battery cordless vacuum battery pack and the result is fantastic. Note: I didn’t unsolder the small coil wires at the bottom end... if you’re careful, it’s not necessary.
Slapdat Hugh Jass where did you buy the right battery for this?
yunus y - You can buy a NiMH rechargeable 1.2V AA battery (Energizer sells them) and solder thin wires or flat contact strips onto each battery terminal. I just used similar AA batteries that came out of a 6-battery power pack in a cordless vacuum I wasn’t using. Good luck!
Thank you very much, but it is not necessary to unsolder all contacts.
the brush came to life and began to work longer and more actively
I have a different model Braun, and they decided to make it much more repair resistant with one way latching on the bottom cover end cap. I persisted and had to dig and pry it along the perimeter and forcibly removed it. The battery seemed deeply discharged and maybe the inductive charging was disabled as a result, but after charging it manually with a power supply, it seems the induction charging is working. I'll see if maybe it'll still work with the original battery.
Hot diggity dog! That worked. Definitely not for the faint of heart though. I figured there was at least a ten percent chance that I destroyed the unit along the way, but luckily I didn't. Even the hard brushing indicator still works. Time will tell if it's still reasonably water-resistant after the whole ordeal, but as of right now, it is charging on my laundry room table.
Couple of notes about the battery: I ended up buying a replacement on eBay with the tabs already welded. I didn't realize until I had breached the device's casing that I had gotten one of the extended batteries, but didn't have ready access to a rotary tool, so just used needlenose plyers to break the brittle plastic stoppers, and the still-hot soldering iron to take care of them the rest of the way. I thought that I measured the tabs pretty well, but ended up cutting the positive almost too short (it just barely reached the contact pad; barely!) and the negative one too long. It was doable with scissors.
Before putting it back together, this was a great opportunity to clean out the crud that managed to sneak inside.
With any luck, I might be able to get another ten years out of this thing. Not planning on buying another toothbrush this service-unfriendly ever again, however.
Thanks a lot for tour movie. Thanks to you i was able to fix two of my toothbrushes and now they works fine 🙂
The hard part for me was removing the excess white plastic ergots to fit the bigger AA battery (50x14 in lieu of 42x14) tried cutting it with every sharp object in my kitchen with little to no success. What did it for me was just melting those spikey suckers with my soldering iron ( not without a grin of joy watching them vanish). I do recommend though that you hold your breath while doing it since fumes from melting plastic might not be the healthiest thing to breathe. Anyhow if I get lung cancer I'll blame Braun for it. Cheers
Thank you ! I repaired an issue on the on/off button after a fall of the tooth brush on the floor. The inner body slided a few millimeters respected to the outer body, the on/off button was not correctly aligned. Dismounting and mounting again following your steps solved the issue.
When you change the battery the brush needs to be on the charger for a few seconds to reset the circuit board, then it will
Come to life when you removed the brush, it will not power on whilst charging anyway
It is ALWAYS worth salvaging instead of throwing 'in general' functioning Items. They want us to throw them away and BUY new ones. As such most definitely VALUABLE Video √√
once i found out it was a 1.2 volts my intention was always to use ENELOOP batteries too i used the PRO 2.450 MA but i used flex cable instead of them metal tags from the old battery i used 0.75 MM diameter my second attempt i flatten the multi stranded cable tinned it so as not to end up with a lump of solder on either end n make the battery longer (like my first attempt so far my partner n i have been using it for 5 days n its No sign of it needing a recharge yet nearly 2.5 amps its 4 maybe 5 times the capacity of the original battery i expect it will go few more weeks B4 charging but great video many thanks
many thanks for this guide. I had a problem with the broken connection on the charging coil. It works like new now :)
The celebratory yeses and woo hoos at the end are pretty much the reason diyers and tinkerers even bother with these kinds of projects, regardless of the time invested and money saved. Great job and thanks for making this video! 👍
Great point
Hi..it happened with mine too... it needs to be put on charge just for 1 sec before it starts after replacing the battery...
Great video just replaced the battery on my Braun toothbrush.
You need a desoldering pump to remove the solder.
Watch out for the bottom spring vanishing into the unknown😊.
Need to make a new one for mine
Nice guide. My only addition would be that I found soldering the battery tabs to the logicboard first and only then to the battery was a bit easier.
Thanks a lot , I needed the opening process
Glad it helped
Lol you sir are a legend, says dont heat up these batterys then say i will do it again to make it straight lol. That happy feeling in the end.Great video quality in close up and details respect man. That thing is a beast now,put a saw to end and cut a tree down.
thank you doctor naz
My Oral-B is slowly not charging so I will be trying this in the near future.
i hope it works
I swapped the battery in mine and then found it did not charge. By careful inspection I spotted that the small component next to the 3 pin transistor had gone missing. I guess it is really easy to lose that when you pry the pcb out. So be careful! I never found the diode but I replaced it with one in my parts bin (yes I do have a hoard of SMD components) and it worked again! So beware ripping the SMD parts off especially the diode next to the plastic lug. Works now!
Ich got the buttom part removed with NO damage by putting it on the charging station and turn it hard. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for this video!!! Help me a lot to change the battery on my toothbrush.
You're welcome!!
Thank you for this information. I think Oral B should be ashamed at having someone have to solder and go thru an hour process to change a battery!!!
every major company sells items that are not supposed to be repaired by the owners.. but yes
The plastic ring on the top may be left in place. The internal piece comes out easy with this ring.
And before disassembling the bottom cap, dip it into hot water to soften the plastic.
Works great! Thanks
Very good video 10/10 I have now replaced my battery in my oral b 3756 but i used a Flat-Top Battery with Z-Tags - Green 49mm x 14.5mm
You can actually put a normal AA size rechargeable NiMH battery in there. There is some work to do to remove some excess plastic that occupies the space that the previous battery wasn't using. But it can be done.
correct
Helpful video, did this today! After about two years the stock battery was done and only lasted two or three days.
Got an AA Sanyo Eneloop with soldering tabs both to one side (U shape). Stock there is this a 4/5 size AA battery mounted, but if you cut the small plastic spacers in the battery compartment you can fit a fullsize AA without a problem.
Spots to solder are pretty small, just be careful not to overheat the board or damage the small copper wires.
Do not try to open the bottom with your loading station, better way is to pry it open with a flathead screwdriver. I nearly cracked my toothbrush.
Thanks for the heads up
Did you reinstall the spring or cut it shorter? I was thinking maybe just a piece of foam or something
Thanks for the excellent instructions.
Hi, good video, thank you for sharing. Excuse me, I have the 3767 model and when I disassembled it and measured the battery voltaje it was 3,96V is it possible? The battery is the same size as a AA battery, it should be 1,2V I don't know which battery I have to buy. Thankyou
That a lithium battery in AA size
Thank you I took it apart and the problem seems to be something with the bottom toothbrush cover #3756 without it's charging the battery as soon it's back on it stops charging or it's charging awhile what should be done in order to get it working with the cap on?
Hi. I couldn't find a NiMH 42mm (or 49mm) x 14mm 1.2V 2200mAh to be replaced on my dead toothbrush. The only available here is a 3.7V 5500mAh. IF I USE THAT, WOULD THAT BE TOO MUCH AND WOULD THAT DESTROY THE TOOTHBRUSH ITSELF? I'm not an electrical guy. I need all the help I can get.
Thank you!
Worked for me thanks
welcome
This is the best one. Two thumbs up!
Thanks for the instruction. Very cool.
My PRO 500 brush is 4 years old and it works now for 1-2 days, and it charges all night. In Russia, it is difficult and very expensive for Eneloop. I want to install a GP, at 2300 mah, and the branded Braun battery was at 800 mah.
I have a question: will a larger battery be charged?
Does your brush still work?
Yes, I looked. Yesterday I replaced the battery 1500 mAh on my brush. Put on the charge, but it continues to charge and does not turn off. The indicator flashes for 15 hours. Did your infection stop automatically after replacing the battery?
@@LEARNINGCHORDS Not. In the morning she stopped flashing. It took more than 24 hours. All the same, it turns off. You can congratulate the purchase of new brushes.
I repaired my own and am very glad that I saved money. Thanks you!
My is 8 years old or something and is working for 3-4 days, the problem is that plastic degraded(i am puting it back on charger after use 99,5% of time). Also in other videos they are showing different way to open it, top ring first them u can use charger to open the bottom...
Far to much waffle making it a frustrating watch BUT all is forgiven as the jeopardy towards the end made up for it! I loved your reactions when it lit up. So thanks for the video and I think it will be a breeze now when I do mine.
Ha ha, you're right there, far too much waffling.
best repairing video!!!
I wonder if you needed to solder the tags to the battery at all, a bit of springy metal would have worked, I think they're just done that way for mass production!
That coil looks awkward to desolder, I've seen another video showing it being left in place.
worked ez with psu for me..
36:07 That's exactly how I reacted when my charging light came on🤣. Next time I think I'll take the coil off first so it's out of the way when I desolder the negative battery terminal.
enjoy
I'm trying this on my Oral-B 3756 and for some reason the solder joints just won't melt. I tested the soldering rod and it works on other devices/joints but it won't melt this joint on this toothbrush at all.
it could be the item is heat sinked on the board and the iron is not hot enough.. it could also be that the solder on the board is leaded. add a lot of quality flux and then put unleaded solder on it. then wick it off... leaded solder is hard to remove sometimes
Thanks, you certainly help me out.
Thanks bro
you are welcome brah
Thank you for the nice video i dit it :)
Excelente
How to open Oral-B PRO 3 3500 Typ 3772??
I don't have one or I would open it and tell you now
I tried to run mine without the charging coil - nothing. Soldered back in the charging coil wires and ...Voila! Perfecto.
Great video. I went through the whole process but though I get the green charging light there is no power when I press the button. Anyone have any ideas?
you messed up? unless the toothbrush is broken-- when you add a new battery it should work...I wonder what is wrong... check your connections...
Thank you!
You're welcome!
So if I cut those tabs, I can use a standard (rechargeable) AA battery?
measure first.. some batteries might fit and some might not
31:01 - Is this little switch a "pressure sensor"?
:D
i am not sure, this was years ago
Nail biting ending
yes
Great! exciting
if you didn't clean it for youtube, you are not going to clean that 😆
what
IONLY put my Oral B on the charger to charge it.... and leave it off until the next charge.... I have been with the same Oral B for 17 years. Leaving it on the charger 27 - 7 slowly kills your battery, that's why the battery only last 2 years.
Gilbert Ruiz Believe it not not. I've bought more than 5 of these power toothbrushes and each one last no more than a year( the batteries didn't die through).
My is on charger all the time and i dont remember how old it is but plastic started to degrade. It is working for 10-12min if not charged(on oryginal battery that is 8 or 10 years old).
Have you done a Type 3728? Bought mine in 07 or 08 and it is still going strong but I am waiting for the shoe to drop! Thanks for the video. Take care. Doug
you are waiting for your shoes to drop?
@@LEARNINGCHORDS It is a popular saying ... Means waiting for the anticipated inevitable. "Waiting for the other shoe to drop." Need to get out. Lol!
yes waiting for the other shoe to drop or fall.. I was just messing around. I get tons of replies each day. I have to entertain myself when answering all of them
A great video. What is the length of the battery?
I've never had on of these last long enough for the battery to fail. They just stop working entirely. Damn things keep falling into the bath
Ash Scott if your toilet is in the bathroom you should never store your toothbrush in there? Just google airborne Mercaptans and Skatole 3 and you will soon change the habits of a lifetime! 😂😂😂
You should change the title to Eneloop Upgrade! It would get this Video more hits
can anyone here in the philippines repace or fix my battery?
maybe
kudos to the video, but to the hell with braun. All this mess just to replace one simple cell??? It could very well be designed to be opened and replaced in a glimpse, but no, they have to make it overcomplicated so that it would be worther to throw everything away and buy the newest model. Well, I have news for braun: I will make sure to NEVER buy braun again, and to never make it buy to all my network.
I hope products, where it is so difficult to change something as simple as a battery, is soon a thing of the past. Hopefully EU is going to ban product like that. The only thing that is good about it is that you can change is for the better, by improving the poor battery inside. And you don't have to throw something away that is otherwise working. Thanks for your video, it was a good help.
hhi... the EU might but the USA won't... this will go on forever
Hmm my battery is 7 years old and still works withot problems. Yea it cant hold a charge for lomg but doing its job
nice
